It only takes a couple of seconds to compile Python within grub though which more than offsets the 45 second boot time reduced to 15 seconds for caching hard drive to msata SSD though.
Too bad Enhance IO (based on facebook) kind of died without support in github it was a great utility.
@NathanOsman Question for you. Does the X11 window system require more overhead than Microsoft's DWM? Because even with Intel graphics, I have never seen Ubuntu's UI operate as smoothly as Windows 7. Also, does X11 do multiple buffering? Because I know that DWM does triple buffering when Aero is enabled...
Or is it just that the GPU drivers are absolute garbage?
Well, compiling Python is really something of a special case. There's a lot of distros that come with Python by default
Ubuntu, for one, comes with both Python3 and Python2
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Well you know I said I don't use Python, but when you boot with grub and want to use Python you have to compile the script. So I kind of lied.
03:29
@AndroidDev It's a combination of things. The drivers aren't as good as their Windows counterparts. But probably the biggest issue is the way X11 and DRM work (or don't work) together.
Remember that X11 is a client/server network protocol from the 80s.
anybody wanna give me a bit of programming logic advice ?
Ok. So that's about that traffic thing
if (productivity < 100) coffee++;
3
There's my advice.
:D
lol, yeah, that i know
03:31
What is your actual question? :P
If new project offer = $140K and current project is $20K say yes.
Hey, that's even better.
Actual question is this. I've 9 states for the traffic control , one of which is is red for all directions. From yellow arrow or yellow light in any direction, controller goes into all red state. Now, from that state, i need to decide how to keep track of whether or not I've yielded one direction, main street arrow or cross street arrow ?
In other words, i need to somehow logically keep track of the sequence of events
Every time you said state I thought Province in Canada which made me remember Quebec where pedestrian crossings where 6 ways all at once and all vehicles get red light at that time.
Well, my case is simpler: it's an intersection of street A (main) and street B ( cross)
03:44
I think you you need to focus on order of events, green light, yellow light, red light.... but I'm not sure I understand the problem.
Well, that's an option,too. I can let it cycle from letting cross street go, to cross street arrow , to main arrow, and then back to main street green. But ideally, I'd like to switch to arrow only if there's a car waiting for arrow
But I can't just do something like if( state == all_red ) next state = arrow_go;
I need to be able to go from all-red, to arrow, back to all-red, and then even if there's a car waiting for arrow again go back to main green
Cycling over a sequence can be done, but it's . . . sort of a cheap way out. I wanna make something actually working like the real thing
By arrow, do you mean a left turn signal?
Yes
Maybe . . . a diagram will help. Hold on, I'll upload the diagram I'm using for behavior description
So, the numbers 1,2,3 are go away from all-stop state are meant to be "priority"
All red is just a transition state, right? You don't keep it all red for everyone for more than half a second, right? :P
Yes. I'm keeping it all-red for like 3 seconds just so that I can see the transitions working properly

@Takkat that's a bug :=)
We should have as many buttons as we want.... lets say a 20 button dialog or so.
@Takkat yes and they also need to randomly moVe around

of course, and the default should change by mouse movements

me too.
I have a notebook at work with Ubuntu on it and I use that more than my w10
It always says it wants to install some important updates and it claims that the "system" can't do that without me rebooting... that's a bug that never got fixed.
but some of my clients demand usage of vpn that are not Ubuntu compatible
Clients rule... unfortunately.

is there some acceptable programmatic way to get the most recent file in a directory? I'm trying not to parse the output of ls or find...
do I need to Ask A Question?
@Zanna I am not sure, but I believe there were some questions on the subject. Might have been on U&L though, I don't remember. The issue is what you define as most recent. On Linux, there is no way to get the creation date.
@Zanna Sure it's been asked but using find should be fine if you do it right. If not, write a shell loop using stat to get the file's modification date.
@JacobVlijm it is on my list to try next. 1 week using G3 and it does not impress me at all.

A: How to find the creation time of a file?

terdon@Nux found a great solution for this which you should all upvote. I decided to write a little function that can be used to run everything directly. Just add this to your ~/.bashrc. get_crtime() { for target in "${@}"; do inode=$(stat -c '%i' "${target}") fs=$(df --output=s...

@Rinzwind I was never fond of Gnome...

@terdon I doubt is is correct (now clicking)
can someone else hammer? I couldn't because I edited the tags, and steeldriver couldn't because it didn't have the tag before I edited it, but it's totally a dupe
@Rinzwind It is. Turns out, ext does keep the creation date but the UNIX api doesn't offer any way of getting it.
@terdon I should be able to figure out a way with exec I guess
@terdon Thanks! :D
@Zanna Done. Also:

Q: Find newest file. Multiple Filetype restrictions

user2815780I want to write a command that gives me the newest file in a directory recursively. But that's not my only limitation. The files has to be an mp3 or a jpg file. (case insensitive prefered) I only need the creating date of that newest file. If possible I want it formatted like this: 30-12-2014 (so...

# Bash
files=(*) newest=${files[0]}

@DavidFoerster Hi David - good evening - nice to see you ! :)
@cl-netbox: Hello to you too!
@DavidFoerster How are things ? New cool bands discovered ? :)
Things are smooth and I didn't look into new music any time recently. And for you?
@DavidFoerster Well, I also didn't find something new worth mentioning ... I tested a lot of GNOME related things after Mark's announcement. :)
17:15
I'm curious about GNOME becoming Ubunut's default DE in that I hope that Canonical (and unaffiliated developers with a focus on Ubuntu) may give GNOME some love and either take over the maintenance of in-tree features that are scheduled to be axed by GNOME developers or develop/maintain some extensions that bring new or restore axed features to GNOME.
The latter sounds more in line with the philosophy of GNOME (throw out everything that we don't deem important) and Canonical (why should we submit patches to upstream when we can just maintain our own patch set or fork).
@DavidFoerster What I saw so far is that it would be a good idea to include the dash-to-dock extension by default to make the transition for not so experienced users more easy ... on the other hand I would appreciate the pure vanilla GNOME version that comes with fedora ... GNOME experience is very good here. :)

@cl-netbox I'm also curious if Mir is going to be Canonical's next Unity: dissatisfaction with the currently available solution (X11/GNOME2), but instead of support for the dedicated successor (Wayland/GNOME3) they roll their own (Mir/Unity).
@DavidFoerster Mir is dead ... they decided to go with Wayland ! :)
@cl-netbox Oh, cool! I haven't heard that yet.
Mir was told to be dead the same announcement they deciced U7 is dead
@DavidFoerster I'm running Wayland on my fedora 25 workstation ... works like a charm ! :)

better but G3 .... I have to say ... sucks...
@Rinzwind install that dash-to-dock thingie and you'll not see much difference to unity ...

shell extensions crash far too often
and so do scripts added to startup. and WTF do I need a script to get native scrolling working? :(
@Rinzwind but this answer deserves upvotes (IMHO) instead ... don't you think so ?
@JacobVlijm do you want me to retract?
shell extensions "applications" ALWAYS crashes. It is gone after a boot, after a close lid and often goes to OFF when I move my mouse to it

question whart is the extension bottom left that has a <
it has icons for transmission and shutter but not ff
I am so installing another DE soon :X
give plasma a try. and then MATE. and then elementary DE maybe :D
@Anwar No, I think it is because it is a bit too complicated to read and understand ... it was that one -> askubuntu.com/questions/905087/… - the thing I was talking with Rinzy about. :)
17:47
@cl-netbox Hmm. I don't have a nvidia driver! I think it's uncommon enough to make people not read :)
but you got a bounty there
@Anwar yes, and a nice comment : "that worked! a problem i've been having for months now, finally solved! thanks a lot!" :)
