That's the old version... new version is: No sleep for the weary
@WinEunuuchs2Unix And the newest version is: No sleep unless you buy the rights for sleep from the dark ruler
Ubuntu version would be No sleep for the Windows users
Regardless of mod sleep-bans my eyes are closing
@ThomasWard Awww.... some sort of dream weaver are we? ;)
@WinEunuuchs2Unix No. I just control the new Icarus satellite network which can direct extradordinarily bright light and heat at any specified location
so it'll be too bright to sleep :P
00:02
@ThomasWard I'll have to undo my tinfoil hat and spread it over the bedroom window panes :p
Anyway @Zanna Good night, sleep well and sweet dreams :)
@WinEunuuchs2Unix but then you have a heat room because of tinfoil
Actually I think the tinfoil would reflect sunlight off the window???
@NathanOsman ^^^ Need a mod here to judge another mod :p
What happened?
speaking of mods, when do we get to vote Zanna to be a mod?... it's it a once a year thing or periodic?
Nathan, Thomas says tinfoil on windows keeps heat in, I assert it reflects sunlight (which I claim to be heat) out.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix this was asked and answered
on meta
00:07
sunlight or mods?

A: When are the 2017 elections?

Kaz WolfeModerator elections are not scheduled events. Instead, they are brought up as the need arises, namely when more moderators are considered "needed." As you can see from the elections list, there was no scheduled election for 2015, because no new moderators were needed. To be more exact, moderator...

mods
I don't use tinfoil. I am familiar with aluminum foil.
Thanks @ThomasWard I posted comment: "I nominate Serg, Kaz Wolfe, Zacharee1 and Zanna."
@NathanOsman tinfoil made of lead is better as it blocks out wifi, whereas aluminum is used for TV rabbit ear boosters and will let NSA control your mind better. The right kind of tinfoil hat requires the right materials!
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Darn. I'm old enough to actually have used aluminum on TV rabbit ears.
I'm not getting any younger...
00:10
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Neutronium-based metallic foil sheeting blocks everything
but it's impossibly hard to find
Chemistry was never my best subject :(
^--- somebody's "brilliant" idea for improving Wi-Fi range.
^^^ Boy Scouts death ray
Neutronium
@WinEunuuchs2Unix lol
00:12
Actually Nathan I have most of those components in my apartment including that nifty blue dust-pan :p
So looking forward to all the up-votes @NathanOsman and @ThomasWard will give me for my questions and answers making me reach 10K soon... what are mod tools you get to use?
I'm not an Ask Ubuntu mod.
That's ok I'll still let you up-vote me...LOL

Q: What does the site look like to a moderator?

Amith KKThe site has special features for moderators. Can I see how the site looks like to the average moderator(tools and stuff)

hehe....seriously you are a chat room mod... so you must know what mod tools are right?
00:15
@WinEunuuchs2Unix nice script, and good idea
@NathanOsman and I both know the agreement system. Check the meta post, it shows some 'things'. The rest is secret and locked
and if we told you the orbital arrays target us and you.
@Serg Thank you. Coming from you that makes me feel real good!
then kablam, we are all dead.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Nathan is a mod on another site, so yeah, he does know mod tools
@ThomasWard thanks for mod link... first answer is funny "If we told you, we'd have to kill you.".
00:16
@Serg Darn, the secret's out :P
@Serg Someone told me a month or two ago @NathanOsman was a mod in this chat room and could ban people from here or something like that????
@WinEunuuchs2Unix yes, he can
@WinEunuuchs2Unix with the exception of the stackoverflow and meta.se chat systems, any diamond moderator can affect changes and/or moderator condemnation and exercising of modly powers in nearly any chat room
Slow clap for using "affect" as a verb correctly...
00:18
it's how @Undo or @ArtOfCode can freeze the room as easily as I can, and they have no mod privs. on Ask Ubuntu.
or @NathanOsman in this case :P
I'm not affected by your slow clapping effect.
CMs have god everywhere so blah.
WHO DARES RISK MY WRATH OF A PING
oh it's you
"The effect of the sunlight effected a strange affect on me."
@ArtOfCode the embodiment of Chaos and Darkness. AKA, me.
00:19
@ArtOfCode poke
@ArtOfCode is a reminder of my assertion that programming is a marriage of Art and Science.
how come everyone wants their discipline to be a marriage of art and science?
because that's the best option
Where art, science, philosophy, and life all intersect in harmony, Enlightenment is found.
00:21
@Chan-HoSuh a lot of people want marriage , but marriage requires commitment
returns to drawing painfully extensive network diagrams
programming is definitely art and science.... politics is art and bullshit :p
3
in case of coding, that's git commitment
economics is smoke and mirrors.
00:22
My point is, what value is added by associating what you do with two rather vague categories to begin with? I guess the idea is to try and link the prestige of other things to what you do... rather than just have it stand on its own merits or descriptors
Well programmers allowed you to type what you did on a computer and me to see it on the other side of the world... sooo.... :)
exactly
let it stand on its own legs
as is... "it is what it is"?
@ThomasWard Of course this is how I came to know the Secrets of Darkness and Chaos. This is due to Enlightenment. And more specifically, Dark Enlightenment acquired at midnight on the Full Moon years ago. It just came forth gradually over time, until I became Dark Chaos Lord.
I suppose, although I find that phrase is too often used where I am ;D
the heck, you just write to yourself?
00:25
where are you? In prison? that's where "It is what it is" would have lots of meaning...hehe
@ThomasWard Truth is here in thy statement.
@Chan-HoSuh Perhaps
@NathanOsman are they trying to create a faraday cage or some kind of directional antenna? o_O
@Seth i'd say directional antenna
but eh
@Chan-HoSuh people believe that success is often combination of natural, intuitive things and mechanical , unnatural and ruthless calculation. Sometimes it is but not always
@Seth want you to know your silentcast app and your help with text-spinner last night has all been born into this Q&A: askubuntu.com/questions/882419/…
Thanks Again!
Hello @DavidFoerster King of Close Votes!!! ALL HAIL
00:29
Haha, thanks!
You're most welcome... Can you close @ThomasWard for us?... his dark powers are overbearing.
Could I please get at least one close flag or vote on askubuntu.com/q/882285/175814? I already VTC'ed as unclear but after clarification it became clear that the question isn't actually about Ubuntu (see comments).
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Which plans has the Dark Lord hatched this time?
@DavidFoerster You got my vote!
@DavidFoerster I dunno...probably another death ray.... this time with nueotron self defeaters
00:32
@DavidFoerster Silenced. (It's still unclear whether they're asking about the Azure networking, or the Ubuntu VM itself, so I closed it as such)
Killjoy.... you didn't give everyone a chance to vote... just me :p
@ThomasWard I revised my comment to explain more clearly how I understand the question.
can confirm, Thomas goes way overkill on his network and device security
^ that
VLANs. VLANs EVERYWHERE!
all isolated :)
Virtual LAN? What's a vlan?
00:35
as in, square peg round hole BASH IT IN WITH A BIG STOMPY ROBOT
@ArtOfCode Maybe he has powerful enemies. Paranoia can be a good thing then.
A virtual LAN (VLAN) is any broadcast domain that is partitioned and isolated in a computer network at the data link layer (OSI layer 2). LAN is an abbreviation for local area network. To subdivide a network into virtual LANs, one configures network equipment. Simpler equipment can partition only per physical port (if at all), in which case each VLAN is connected with a dedicated network cable. More sophisticated devices can mark frames through VLAN tagging, so that a single interconnect (trunk) may be used to transport data for multiple VLANs. Since VLANs share bandwidth, a VLAN trunk can use...
Like most of us the most powerful enemy holding him back is probably the man in the mirror.
you see him too? The guy with the third eye in his forehead, I mean
I probably see him differently than you do.... Third Eye Blind is an alternative rock group I've listened to though.
00:39
I see only one thing when I look in the mirror
bullshit?
lol....j/k
well, two things if I'm looking at myself in the mirror and my girlfriend or ex walks up and gives me a hug from behind.
jeezzzz.... this is gonna turn into a porno
@Seth Now you know why you can put switches into different VLANs.
@ThomasWard one thing I never quite got is what stops me from generating my own frames with a different VLAN tag?
00:41
Switches have to be configured all the way down the chain
if it's not on the right tag, and the switch isn't configured to relay that tag for that port, it fails to go anywhere
no unmanaged switches here :P
Anyways, when I look in the mirror... I see the clash of Chaos and Darkness in infinite eternal majesty, bound within the confines of a human body. The Darkness tries to wreak it's wrath upon the world, and Chaos tries to disrupt the universe.
makes sense. Makes your port management super critical tho
@ThomasWard Are your girlfriend and ex two different people or are you just unsure of the relationship status with a single person.^^
@DavidFoerster They're two different people.
Dual fantasists about current GF and ex is interesting though...

A: How can I boost my wifi range?

jacobccI've had a ton of luck by building a little 'dish' on the receiving end using a mesh colander and a USB WiFi adapter. I've used this to get on the neighbours WiFi while waiting for the new internet to arrive: Obviously, mine is very temporary. A much nicer and more permanent one could be made.

00:42
there's the Darkness and Chaos confined in my shape in the mirror, and a second person once in a blue moon when said person hears me bitching about what i hate about my body.
but i digress
@Seth true, and it also helps there's no DHCP on the network segments I have beyond locked down
so you need to know exactly what range to be on
@ThomasWard Michael Jackson hated his body the most... I guess that is human nature.
otherwise it's not handled right and not routed correct.
and in my case, i disable switch ports not in use.
@ThomasWard how.. how big are those segments?
@Seth /27s or smaller, except my DMZ VLAN which is an entire /16
and my 'malware testing segment' which is isolated with its own /16, but you can't get to that unless I turn on another pfSense downstream and have the boot stick that boots that box correctly.
@ThomasWard that's not too bad.
although not having DHCP on a /16 is gotta be awful.
00:46
@Seth that's the only VLAN that has DHCP. But since I control the vSphere instances on there, and the MAC generation protocols there, other than the switches and physical adapters the entire DMZ is MAC-filtered to either the known physicals or ones inside the vSphere MAC patterns DMZ VMs get.
it's pretty damn tight to say the least, this network.
there's only one VLAN able to pass into others, and that's my wifi segment - management network.
locked down tightly too
wow, that is tight. thumbs up
yep, and I keep improving too
got Snort at the border too
so intrusion detection/prevention
and nice blacklisting if you try and bruteforce :p
Thomas is 100 points away from 40K can anyone recommend some of his answers to upvote?
which Thomas
there's many :P
You my dark lord wanna be friend!
I can't see any of your answers in your profile, just 58 chat rooms.
00:52
i actually only need 57 lol
on any site :P
but i'm not hurting for rep so :P
I just like to see people hit milestones... 39.9K isn't as nice as 40,000 :)
100 points from 40k?
@edwinksl on chat.se
i'm quite a ways away from that on Ask Ubuntu
you have 33.9k on chat.se right?
00:54
@edwinksl I don't have my reading glasses on... 33.9 looked like 39.9... sorry :(
you're fine :)
33.9k is nowhere near 40k
uh okay
i'm tired too :)
:) It's been an exciting week... time to decompress
i ran out of coffee eight hours ago.
00:58
Coffee < noon and Beer > 3 pm make a good Saturday IMO
Pretty girls between noon and 3 don't hurt :)
Windows phone
Yep
They don't sucks like Android or iOS phones.
@Seth I loaned you my portable ion cannon two days ago, can I have it back please?
@ThomasWard You did?
lemme dig around... aha.. hands canon back
01:01
takes cannon back Thank you kindly.
@MathCubes Phone's been discontinued. Also WP..
@Seth
@MathCubes Ubuntu phone > Android > iOS > dumb phones > Windows Phone
You point is
?
@MathCubes that there's limited support out there
you also need to make sure it works with your provider
01:02
Really
not all phones are 'unlocked', usually the 'cheaper' ones are locked, or have blacklisted IMEIs, etc.
That one is
The point is (37.5, 12.4) but if you wish i can give parametric value as well
@ThomasWard Really
I bought a phone outright and then had to pay $12 USD to get it unlocked from a company in California via their website. The Canadian telco that sold me the phone would have charged me $45 CAD to unlock it. Strange but true. The phone was an Alcatel One Touch Idol 3 - 5.5" 1920x1080 and well worth the money. I just wish it would break so I can buy the latest model with higher wattage stereo speakers.
01:08
Yea
you had to pay to get it unlocked?
the network providers over here are, I believe, legally obligated to unlock your phone for free
yeah Europe is like that.
You can get it done for free over here, but it requires knowing which strings to pull and sometimes special circumstances.
I don't know about europe but most phones in ex-Soviet countries are unlocked
@ArtOfCode The phone is made in China... I could have ordered it over eBay unlocked but I choose to buy it from a local telco outright for cash. Then I had to pay California company to unlock it so I could use it with a different telco who had the prepaid plan I liked with unlimited data for 40 bucks a month.
Local telcos all offer unlocking for $40 or so but California webiste was cheaper to give me the code which I hand over to telco I want to use to key into phone. It sounds complicated and it was at the time but now it's all so simple in my mind :)
Is 512 MB enough Ram for a smart phone. I assume so
I mean they can't be that power hungy
01:19
no no no. you'll need at least 1GB.
I think my phone has 2 GB RAM and 16 GB internal storage but I added 64GB micro SD to hold music.
Why would a Phone need atleast a 1gb?
Heck my laptop has 1.5 GB of rom
*ram
Well it's running Android which is like Ubuntu.
No, For a windows phone
same thing applies.
01:21
Well except Windows crashes all the time... other than that same thing as Android which only crashed twice in 18 months.
WP is a little lighter on the RAM because the OS can be better optimized, but you really want at least 1GB.
WP = Word Perfect from 1989?
Well I can upgrade it
I think that only needed 512 KB of RAM :p
@MathCubes you can't upgrade RAM in a phone..
01:24
Huh?
I can't
@WinEunuuchs2Unix WP = Windows Phone.
@MathCubes no.
I am buying it as a gift for my friend
@MathCubes on my phone you can't even change the battery.
Why thou?
WHAT can't even change the battery!!!
most phones have soldered in batteries these days too. Part of the whole "slimmer" design trend.
01:25
Nope... I hope it breaks soon so I can buy a new phone with 1.8 watt stereo speakers instead of 1.2 watt stereo speakers... doesn't make sense I konw but that's the way I feel.
I hate the thin fab
I remember when people were so shocked by that
Really
@MathCubes phone RAM is soldered in.
Well in the old days you used to carry a spare battery and swap out the dying one... These days my battery lasts all day and if necessary I have a booster battery pack I can plug in.
01:27
it's embedded in the board.
I have never had a smart phone before
Heck the mall even has free cell phone battery charging stations in the food court.
@MathCubes actually, even more, they claimed people would refuse en-masse to buy phones with batteries that had to be replaced by a technician
@Chan-HoSuh I want my damn battery to die forever so I can finally buy a new phone with justification!
That is mess up
01:29
it's surprising how people's attitudes change... now that the new iPhone doesn't have a headphone jack, I thought most people would say, ain't buying that!, but instead, the price of headphones that plug into a standard jack get discounted and people are like, "Hoping these don't go obsolete next year"
Yea
Not me
The only laptop that I like is the IBM thinkpad about.
I don't really need a laptop, I guess, but I think it might be nice to have a very cheap one I can take to meetups or something
@Chan-HoSuh After buying 5 or 6 headphones for my cell phones that kept breaking (or breaking phone headphone jack) I got bluetooth earbuds that are battery powered and will last forever. Best bass in the world :)
@WinEunuuchs2Unix fancy :)
I wounder what Desktop/WM should I put on my desktop
01:32
@Chan-HoSuh They are fancy.... but got them at half price on sale so that makes them ordinary :)
It isn't powerful enough for Gnome or KDE
one advantage to having those big headphones though is that it kinda broadcasts "DO NOT DISTURB"
what about lxde?
I have a pair of big headphones too.... they make good ear warmers in Canadian Winters.
do people wear ear bags around your parts?
hmm that sounds wrong
I mean, are ear bags popular where you live? :)
I saw a couple of pairs today on my outing
So I would say .01 % of population... about 10% wear ear buds and the rest don't have cell phones or don't use ear buds.
But they aren't called "ear bags" I saw one person with "over the ear headphones" and another with "on the ear headphones".
01:37
lol, you mentioned ear warmers, so I was asking about "swedish ear bags"
I always mean to buy them, but I forget
I know about "ear muffs" are you saying in Sweden they have sound options?
A girl at work told me they sell "hand bags" now where you can hold your phone inside gloves that have a window where you can see your cell phone and operate the touch screen.
I think she said the cost $160 bucks.
02:01
why is Android Studio so big
big=popular or big=RAM requirements / DISK size?
disk size
4.5GB
from a 1.6GB EXE
it takes more space than Windows XP did
And more space than DOS 1.10
I don't know if we can call 4.5GB "big" in this day and age.
02:03
this chat takes more space to load than DOS
In the era of dual floppies you could boot with DOS on one... it would load into RAM then swap in your application floppy (160 KB) and run it with your data on the other (160KB) floppy. A 10 MB hard drive was a dream to some.
160KB floppy??
aren't they 3.12MB?
BTW... It's called a "HARD DRIVE" because it's not a "floppy"
or were these those 8" ones?
The sony disks were 3.44 MB I think.
02:06
right yeah
3.something I knew :p
The 8" floppies were the predessor's to the 160 KB 5 1/4" floppy.
320 KB 5 1/4" floppies were "double sided" I think.
It was a long time ago though.
We called the sony disks "diskettes" because they weren't true floppies as they had a rigid plastic case and a metal shutter to expose the platter.
5" floppies are only 160KB?
o_O
I have a roller coaster game on one
I'll have to google it to be sure.
Ha this is interesting: In May 2016 the United States Government Accountability Office released a report that covered the need to upgrade or replace legacy computer systems within Federal Agencies. According to this document, old IBM Series/1 minicomputers running on 8-inch floppy disks are still used to coordinate "the operational functions of the United States’ nuclear forces..." The government plans to update some of the technology by the end of the 2017 fiscal year.[16][17]
I found your 8" floppy disks but wikipedia didn't say how much storage space is on 5 1/4" floppies.
02:15
hey so do you guys know any devices to keep paper folded in half, like say in a small bag, without actually putting a crease in it?
yeah it's called a tube. Your roll the paper up and put it inside. Water-proof ones are better for pony express riders traversing shallow ponds.
lol, that's true, a tube will work
hmmm although if it were a small tube, I bet the paper would have more trouble unfurling than if I had something that just bent it
roll it backwards and place it back in the tube for 15 minutes to make it flat again.
@Zacharee1 unfortunately, sometimes you have to carry important pieces of paper around that are supposedly to appear pristine to the recipient. And I don't usually carry a large enough bag
@WinEunuuchs2Unix aha, you are full of ideas
yeah I think that should work
02:23
Well I used to be a Systems Analyst so I used to be paid for coming up with ideas.
lol, I see
I appreciate the free usage of your brain on my question then
Hopefully I use my brain for stopping wars for free too.
This is a delicate time in human history.
Lots of money in the war machine that tries to wipe out the peace machine which is usually volunteer non-paid.
I think I can just wear one of these like a ninja: amazon.com/Expandable-Document-Tube-2-25-x17-29/dp/B00576ARM8
03:02
it's always so satisfying when a website tries to open a popup ad, and your adblocked closes it
03:24
I don't even notice that anymore... the problem nowadays is that things aren't simple popup ads anymore
and some sites do things to try and force you to turn off the ad blocker
03:47
I like what Brave is doing.
