00:18
hi. I need help!!!
Oli
Oli
@BrallanAguilar Have you asked your problem in a question on the main site? Not trying to be rude but there are a lot more people on the site than in this chat room.
ok, I'll try it. Thanks!
00:33
is anyone here good with 'fixing' up images?
Oli
Oli
00:45
@rlemon That can't be fixed easily unless you have the original. You either want to export that as a 24+bit PNG or a less compressed JPG
yea i managed to fix it up a bit
heh, jpegs
Oli
Oli
That almost looks like it's been compressed with something 8bit and then exported as JPG
four OH 4
nvm kept it a jpg apparently.
still... is better :P
stupid templates.
i liked it but not really. so i'm ripping it apart and remaking it. :<
gn peeps
00:49
WebP totally blows JPG out of the water.
PNG blows JPG out of the water
JPG is the new BMP :)
I come into the Ubuntu chat and wer'e talking about... JPG?
A FILE EXTENSION?
An IMAGE FORMAT?
Cool.
ANd yet - random.
And yet- whenever I come into the room all goes silent.,
whistles
Oli
Oli
We're just wondering if we turn our backs for 10 minutes and come back whether the entire room will be filled with you talking about you and your dad's latest ventures into ASP.NET et al.
Like last night.
Hey, I got bored.
Oli
Oli
00:57
Well that's twice now. Started writing an answer and the question gets deleted >_<
And like JPG is any better.
Why don't I ever see @fossfreedom in chat?
@MarcoCeppi: PNG is terrible at compressing pictures with a lot of detail.
PNG shines at compressing images with a lot of solid color.
Of all things to argue about - image formats?
WebP tends to produce slightly better results than JPG.
@William We're not arguing. We're discussing the technical merits of image formats.
You might not be, BUT I AM ;)
01:00
So, anyone here going to submit a picture for the 12.04 countdown banner?
@GeorgeEdison OK, I mistakenly took it as so. My bad.
@MarcoCeppi You mean you think PNG is better than JPG for photos?
Time to fire up the Gimp for an example.
Oh, "discussing"! That is a lot better then "arguing".
i like the design.
:P
@Marco:
The JPG quality is set to 100% and I have full compression turned on for the PNG.
Identical image in both cases.
And...
There's the WebP version. Notice the difference in file size.
Here is the full version: dl.dropbox.com/u/31080052/garden.webp (Chrome only).
Not bad quality-wise eh?
@GeorgeEdison Yes, but who uses webp? It's a relatively new format.
01:15
Chrome supports it out of the box.
And HOW DARE YOU POST A WINDOWS SCREENSHOT IN THE ASK UBUNTU CHAT?! YOU SHALL BE PUNISHED!
...and I wrote a plugin (in C no less) that adds WebP support to the Gimp.
Now that I have ranted, I apologize for using all caps. I know it's rude. But, sometimes, I feel I have to shout.
@William Does that mean the Ubuntu users can't post screenshots in a Windows discussion room?
@William Dude, give it a break. People use Windows it's not the end of the world. We're tolerant, not jerks :)
01:16
@MarcoCeppi Any more invites today?
5 more going out in about an hour
That, right there, my dear penguin, was sarcasm.
I, personally, can't get WIndows 8 to work on virtualbox for the life of me.
@MarcoCeppi I was trying to be sarcastic, I apologize for any confusion I may have caused. That's the problem with internet chat, you can't see people's expressions as the post stuff or the tone of voice in which they are saying it in.
BTW, what invites?
Goes over possible conspiracy theories

A: How can I reduce or increase the number of workspaces in Unity?

ajmitchThe options for the number of workspaces can be found in compizconfig-settings-manager under General Options. Do not set horizontal workspaces below 2 or the workspace switcher button won't work.

@JorgeCastro Don't look now... it's CCSM!
So, what was the final decision on that anyway?
Is it going to stay or go in the 12.04 repos?
Doh. I'm alone again.
/me gets the feeling that he is not wanted here
01:31
@William Three people submitted fixes to make it suck less
which is awesome
That's good.
@GeorgeEdison Stack Alert has died. An error has occured. Details:.
@William It only works if your CPU has hardware virtualization.
@William Just click OK and it should be fine.
Okay... what did I do wrong... I am trying to install Gnome 3 on Oneiric and I'm getting a configuration page for GDM...
not enough unicorns.
I hope I installed the right package...
...we'll find out in a minute.
sudo apt-get install -u nicorns
01:42
@rlemon Doesn't that conflict with the kitten package?
@rlemon sudo apt-get install -u nicorns -a
all the unicorns
Okay - why is Evolution getting installed???
@GeorgeEdison no the kitten package ties into libpony
jrg
jrg
Ok, that wasn't as lengthy and painful as I expected.
@jrg Do you remember the name of the package that installs the Gnome 3 Desktop?
I'm not sure I've got the right thing installing...
jrg
jrg
01:47
@GeorgeEdison You mean the gnome shell? gnome-shell
Yup - I'm installing the wrong package.
@jrg Thank you.
jrg
jrg
No problem. :
Lol... Unpacking libclutter-1.0-0
libclutter is the last thing I need on this VM :P
@jrg Oh by the way - StackApplet 1.6 is built for Precise now.
jrg
jrg
@GeorgeEdison Sweet, I'll get on that ASAP
Dangit, I go on a forced 2 day vacation, come back and i've got 30 spam, just under 200 unread emails that I need to reply to, and 184 packages to update on my precise install. this next few hours are going to be fun.
3
Need to get 165 MB of archives.
After this operation, 1,686 kB disk space will be freed.

Like that's going to really help much... :D
@jrg Hey, I'm installing nearly 200MB just to get Gnome 3 going here :)
jrg
jrg
01:54
@MarcoCeppi DUDE HIGH RES BOOTSPLASH!!! JUST WHAT I ALWAYS WANTED!!
@GeorgeEdison 200MB? This a precise install or an oneiric install?
@jrg Oneiric... but over a 1Mbps connection...
jrg
jrg
I only ever do 50MB for gnome-shell and its friends....
Yeah, I accidentally installed the package gnome :P
jrg
jrg
oh, thats right - you didn't do the desktop install, did you?
So now Evolution is installing...
@jrg Yes and no.
I used the Mini CD ISO to get the basics installed.
Then I hand-picked the packages I needed to form a functional desktop.
jrg
jrg
01:56
Gotcha.
I learned a lesson - don't do that.
Even though the packages may be in a consistent state, you end up with this: askubuntu.com/questions/72023/…
...and other strange things.
jrg
jrg
Tossed my hat in the ring for that logo design thing - meta.askubuntu.com/questions/2624/… :P
I hope it meets the trademark restrictions. :P
It's cool.
Why??? Why are you installing gnuchess, Ubuntu???
jrg
jrg
@GeorgeEdison heh, you screwed up your package manager, big time.
All I wanted was Gnome 3. Sigh.
02:26
Inkscape???
hey so what's the problem
I installed the wrong package :P
I wanted the Gnome 3 desktop and so I ran:
sudo apt-get install gnome
Silly mistake, huh?
Since this is a VM, it's taking forever to install all of the packages.
02:46
Hi everyone
@RolandTaylor Hi.
What's up?
Nothing much
Just doing some blending and about to do some updating :)

@RolandTaylor Your post sparked quite a debate over on G+ :)
Anyway - I gotta run now. I'll try and catch you later.
@GeorgeEdison cool :D
@GeorgeEdison yeah I tend to get a lot of those debates :(
It's good and bad, because while some people may get questions answered and the record set straight, the open fighting goes no where in the end :(

Q: Is there a way to have a web browser while no KDE or GNOME is installed?

romeovsI'm running an ubuntu machine (server actually) that does not have any user interface installed, only a command line. I was wondering if it'd be possible to have a web browser, say Google Chrome, run on this machine without having to insall the whole GNOME or KDE environment. Can this be done?...

Hello all
11:16
i want such a hard disk too!
where do questions about linux tools go? unix.SE?
@htorque gnu?
whut?
@htorque Is it a gnu tool?
no, it's dot
or better: a graph in dot format and i want some graph info from that file
11:31
U&L
Oli
Oli
@htorque We take any Linux question as long as it's not irrelevant to Ubuntu. Ie if you want to ask about a random application, that's fine... If you want to ask about a random application on Fedora or specifically across multiple distributions, U&L might be a better bet. If you're asking something over multiple platforms (outside just Linux distros) SuperUser (desktop) or ServerFault (server) are better bets.
yeah, i'll probably go to unix.SE

@Caesium I'm nuking both of your comments (there's no flag or penalty) because it's got a bit unpleasant. You do have a valid point - it's a lot of text to describe something that isn't that complicated. I'll add a summary.
Yeah I think that sounds fair
My last comment was entirely unnecessary but he was starting to wind me up

Q: How to install Ubuntu on vnware?

It is my tasks section of the answer.
Tasks
Go through an ambiguous tag and replace the ambiguous tag with a more descriptive tag which will be provided.
Go through the higher voted and higher viewed questions and try to gather a list of canonical questions.

I guess you should CW your answer @jrg
jrg

@JorgeCastro I can do that. Sure. :)
I just need to have the TODOs to Mike today so he can put them on the global jam page
Oli

@Caesium is that better? Not sure I've ever done such a ruthless edit :)
It's going to be like "Want to contribute on ask ubuntu! Check out these easy beginner tasks!"
@jokerdino I would say >= 5000 views.

@Oli, I started with the best of intentions :/
anyway sorted now, it was just getting a bit out of control, thanks :)
14:05
@JorgeCastro Added them. Want me to delete my answer?
sure
I'll work on making it better over the course of the day
@Oli, also while I have the rep to edit his question I didn't really dare, I can only guess what his reactions to that would have been
jrg
jrg
@Caesium relax, you did the right thing from what I can see.

15:04
@jrg sorry that's patented
A flying disc is a disc-shaped glider that is generally plastic and roughly in diameter, with a lip. The shape of the disc, an airfoil in cross-section, allows it to fly by generating lift as it moves through the air while rotating. The term frisbee, often used uncapitalized to generically describe all flying discs, has been a registered trademark of the Wham-O toy company. Though such use is not encouraged by the company, the common use of the name as a generic term has put the trademark in jeopardy. Flying discs are thrown and caught for free-form recreation and as part of many dif...
