@Fabby I was just about to post the answer ^ above to your meta question when you deleted it...

@ByteCommander if you have feature request, send it on github, alright ?

ok, but remind me of that in the answer ^_^

will do

12:28 AM
@Serg Seems not to work at all for me... :-/

@ByteCommander What fails ?

It does not replace
Oh. Duh! >.<

did you enabled replacement ? the top menuitem ?

Nvm, I forgot to tick "enable".
Maybe editing the pattern should auto-enable?

@ByteCommander how exactly ?

12:32 AM
When I enter a new pattern and confirm with ok, set it to enabled and send a desktop notification that it is enabled.
Would also be cool if you had two different indicator icons, with yellow arrow for enabled and with grey arrow for disabled maybe.

@ByteCommander That can be easily done. I'll need a different icon though, because it is gnome's stock icon. I'll be driving now, so leave me comments if you have more here. I'll check when I'm home

1:03 AM
@Serg Maybe interesting Area 51 proposal for you area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/94001/ukrainian-language

Is changing username on ubuntu a crazy idea?

Should be not that big problem, as the system mostly relates on the user ID and not the name, I think.
Not sure whether you can easily rename the home directory though.
In any case, a backup is always your friend.

I'll take a backup and attempt stuff tomorrow, thanks.

Oh also, it might get confusing, so I'm reposting this here.

1:16 AM
@avery thanks for sharing
@Fabby what happened to the MetaSE post?
yay I can receive WiFi calls with these Unifi WAPs
I never got them on the Linksys

1:37 AM
I'm thinking I won't be posting any answers tonight, since I've already had a shot and half of brandy
Celebrating my 10 years
holly sh!t . . . 10 years . . . I almost wanna cry

Congratulations!

Thanks ^^

You're on the road to be one helluva an open source developer.

10 years of what
@avery do you have a Discord?

Of being in the US

1:45 AM
@Zacharee1 10 years of derpwolf derping thorough the United States of A

oh
coolio
are you a full-fledged citizen?

Yep, I am, even have the certificate of citizenship

noice

I'm a certified citizen

when did you learn teh inglesh

1:48 AM
I inglished my whole life . . . Really. I started in like 1st grade, which wasn't anything special. In school you mostly learn bunch of grammar, and no real experience.
Then after I came to the US, the real learning and practice began

hue
There's a 48-port complete PoE smart switch from UniFi o_O
it's $835 though :p

I remember when I was in like 3rd grade or so, there were some american students who came to our town, and visited the school. I was reading a poem in English to one of the guys with green hair. "Good morning , good morning, good morning to you, good morning , good morning, I'm glad to see you". I'm also perplexed what the heck american students were doing in god-forsaken town as mine. We're literally in the middle of nowhere

lol

Peace Corps?

Do Peace Corps wear kind of punk-rock style clothes and have green-dyed hair ? I think those guys were like college or high-school level folks, doing some kind of exchange or travel-study program

1:53 AM
They are hipsters and wear whatever is trendy at the time...so still could have been them.
What year was that?

1999 ? 1998 ? something around that time

Just wondering if it was post-Soviet, but still guessing it was PC
I forget it's been 25+ yrs since 1991

@Zacharee1 yes, ao#4273

thanks

yeah . . . it's been over a quarter century. . . and Im gonna be 27 this year . . . reality sinks in . . . hard . . .

2:08 AM
I don't know how it feels to you now, but the events of 1989-1991 (really starting in 1982 in Poland) just seemed unbelievable at the time.

I was born in 1990 , so I grew up after all that

But that's what I mean, to you it's a could-have-been-different and something to be learned about afterwards.

Totally.

so cool

^^ funny

2:29 AM
I think i will have to commit a few changes to github tomorrow. I don't have enough brainpower left for tonight.
Just glad i managed to put the new indicator onto github and into PPA today

@Zacharee1 hahahahaa
been there done that so many times..

lol

I always thought it was ironic that if you saw that you already owned it.

well it was for the previews it showed before the movie

but the extra-high volume is the funny part

3:01 AM
Here's a picture I took.
Imgur scaled it down a bit:
Original resolution is 10204x1600.

Nice. Is that Alberta?

Yes indeed.
And there's the same view at night.

That's impressive

I goofed up the middle part of the night picture.
I must have moved the camera since the image is blurred a bit.

Was wondering about that
Here's the closest city to me at night (not my pic):

3:13 AM
Nice!

At least I had the day off Friday ;)

3:31 AM
@terdon cc ^

Lol.
So true.

As long as regex editing goes only to stdout and not back to the original file - it's OK. Even if you mess up, the original file is OK. But if you try to do in-place editing without backing up that data, yer gonna have a baaaad time

@Serg Have you looked at this question? askubuntu.com/q/874763/117123

@chaskes taken a brief look. I've no clue what OP might have done. the import error could potentially be a spelling issue, but others are baffling

4:25 AM
and bounty on one of my questions... i'm getting annoyed.
+150 if anyone wants to help me fix broadcom wifi

Still hating my wifi.

A: How do you get a UUID from a a device on the grub2 prompt?

psusiThe ls -l command should be revealing.

How does that reveal the UUID? o_O

4:52 AM
O_O

@Seth The GRUB prompt has an ls command that lists devices.

@EliahKagan Ah. I figured it might be something like that, although it sounds a little unintuitive.

Do you think I should edit that screenshot (cropped) into the answer?

another user running chmod rampantly... askubuntu.com/q/874782/208574
we need a Darwin Awards for things like this.
Um, @Seth, why is a synonym of ? Not all recovery-type options are data-related.
i guess that should be a metapost.

Do we even need the tag? Should we retag the questions that have it and discourage its use?

5:04 AM
yeah, saw the metapost on that just now.
7
Q: The "recovery" tag

RichardJust now, I saw recovery. I'm not sure what to do about it, but it seems it needs to go, because it isn't specific enough. File recovery? Recovering a system to a usable state? The tag has a variety of questions in it. Perhaps it should be blacklisted and it be recommended that more specific tags...

so just ignore my crazy ranting.

Well I think you're right, though. It seems to me should be like -- not a synonym, and with a tag wiki explicitly telling people not to use it and what to use instead.

i mean, most recovery is data-recovery.
i was thinking more about system recovery (or recovering from Horrible Mistakes[tm])
still making a metapost, will propose if that's okay, @EliahKagan

Yes, please do post.
I mean, if that's how people use the tag (same as ) then I guess it's okay to keep it a synonym.
But I think your original point is correct -- there are a lot of other things called "recovery." Like recovery mode.

@KazWolfe there's also sanity recovery.

i wonder what to do with BoW..

5:16 AM
posted, waiting for au meta thing to pick it up.

au meta bot*
it takes 3-2 mins i think
have da upvote
who can blacklist tags?

I don't think is actually blacklisted. We still have 7,428 questions with it (unfortunately), and when I add it on the ask question page, there's no error -- though I do see the conspicuous tag wiki about how I shouldn't use it. If doesn't merit full blacklisting then might not either. (But there are historical differences, so I am not concluding it shouldn't.) Aside from that, I agree entirely with the meta post (and have upvoted it).

looks like it is blacklisted? @EliahKagan

Huh. I didn't get that. Does it only come up when you actually submit the question?

yep
i just tried to submit an empty title/body question with only the installation tag and that came up.

5:27 AM
Ah. It is, then. I guess blacklisting doesn't require that no questions exist with the tag, just that no questions are asked with it (or have it added by editing). Thanks.
For anyone coming here from meta or wherever, let it be known that I was totally wrong when I suggested the installation tag wasn't really blacklisted. :)

@EliahKagan fun fact too, you can reply to yourself,
@KazWolfe like this.

Yeah, I've done that before. I don't know why I didn't just do it then.

alright, just wanted to make sure you're aware
@EliahKagan well, it is sort of a weird/involved process

Q: Give [recovery] the [installation] treatment

Kaz WolfeLet's talk for a minute about the recovery tag, again. There are many different kinds of recovery, including (but not limited to): data-recovery, for recovering lost data, password-recovery, for recovering a lost password, recovery-mode, for doing recovery things, System Recovery, for recoveri...

@Edity I think it's still necessary to ask Stack Exchange employees to do it. I don't think moderators can actually edit a site's tag blacklist.
37
Q: Give moderators the ability to manage blacklisted tags

FumbleFingersThe request to Implement a Tag Black List was first raised back in Aug '09, but as one of the mods on English Language & Usage pointed out only a few days ago, even moderators don't have access to modify the blacklist; only devs have that ability (I'm not a mod, by the way). Can moderators have...

5:31 AM
there it is
@EliahKagan looking at the answer, they don't seem like they want to let mods for whatever reason, "too extreme" or similar, i'd guess

i'd also like shog to re-eval this but that's not happening.

Q: learning linux server and apache tomcat server

Navin KumarIm new to Linux and i want to learn Apache tomcat server and samba server could you please tell me what are the things that is should learn

I need some moderator help: @JourneymanGeek
What to do about the above?

11:22 AM
@MarkYisri What kind of help do you need?

Read the comments.
in that question

And what is your problem? You can always flag the question as too broad or off-topic.
The question already has 2 close votes.

well, when I told him that he should state a problem, he just says the title of his question.
@Pilot6 I couldn't see those. ok thanks

Just flag and do not worry. The rest will be handled by the system.

@Pilot6 okay, just flagged as "too broad"

11:33 AM
Hi all!

@DavidFoerster I was the first to flag it ;-)

i flagged too @Pilot6 @David

@MarkYisri Job's done!

grr, the Apache tomcat guy is getting annoying
he just repeats something over and over

@MarkYisri I sugget to leave them alone.

11:38 AM
@MarkYisri I'm not a mod here.
Nor a high rep user
but I'd totally think something like that clearly is seeking product, service or learning material recommendations...

12:20 PM
Hello everybody ! :)
@Pilot6 Hello Pilot6 ! :) I just compensated the downvote with my upvote ! :)
@UbuntuUser and what do we see here my friend ... ? :D

12:45 PM
@DavidFoerster late reply much? o_O
lotta French spam lately
NBC has an overlay over its videos if it detects an ad blocker, but it still loads the video behind it, so I can just delete the overlay element

Sounds like a job for µBlock Origin.

asking about generic Linux questions is off-topic. — Mark Yisri 2 hours ago
@MarkYisri no it isn't! Asking about stuff specific to other Linux distributions and not applicable to Ubuntu is off topic.
Asking about anything that is applicable to Ubuntu but also to non-Ubuntu Linux is perfectly off topic.
Largely because if we were to only accept questions 100% specific to Ubuntu and not applicable to anything else, we would have about 4 questions on the site.

Q: Are "not only Ubuntu-specific" questions on-topic?

kosI know this question has been asked and answered already here: How do we tell if a question belongs here, or rather at stackoverflow/superuser? However this topic came up recently again in a discussion in the comments of a question about sudo, where an user claimed the question be off-topic bec...

Good afternoon terdon ! :)

@ByteCommander I actually had to disable Privacy Badger and Windscribe last week, because they triggered the adblock blocker
only ABP bypassed it

Eew, ABP.
I recently got rid of it.

why
it works well

It's slower and hogs more resources than the others and many people are unhappy with the "acceptable ads" that go through.
Not sure if I had read about some privacy problems as well, might be confusing that with another add-on

1:13 PM
I like the idea of acceptable ads

@ByteCommander The problem is that there is no better equivalent available ... Good afternoon ! :)

because sites do need ads
just not all the banner, pop-up and insertion ads

@Zacharee1 I agree ... good afternoon ! :)

hello

I thought so too, but now switched to µBO after getting surprised by the WOT scandal.

1:15 PM
wot

Do you see the avatar today @ByteCommander ? :)

I'm on my home laptop, it always worked there.

alright, 4th adblocker added

Problem is my work/study laptop.
@Zacharee1 One advantage of µBlock O. is that you can manually block every HTML element on a site by right-clicking it. So in case it misses a banner, simply add a rule for it in 10 seconds

ABP can do the same

1:20 PM
@ByteCommander @Zacharee1 : I see one downside of uBlock -> Updated: June 2, 2015 ! :)

@cl-netbox uBlock Origin, not UBlock.

also, the extension doesn't really need to be updated
it's the lists that matter

@ByteCommander ah okay ... missed that O ... :) gonna check it out ... :)

1:34 PM
@ByteCommander Installed ... what I see is that EasyList is included ... just as in ABP ... isn't that the list where the privacy concerns came from @Zacharee1 ?

idk

v(°_°)v

Zoidberg?

1:35 PM
No Decapodian, no.
How do you get that idea?

@ByteCommander your shrug icons don't work as expected eh ?

looks like the claws

It's an arm.

\ _(^_^)_/

The lower tip of the v is the elbow. :P

1:37 PM
looks like Zoidberg

@Serg maybe that one is easier understandable...

@cl-netbox I don't have that!!! :(
@cl-netbox Well I got xp pro to work!
Bye!

@UbuntuUser which ubuntu version are you running ? mine is 16.10 ! :)
Rinzy ! :) Good afternoon @Rinzwind ! :)

well, i am

HEYA boxy

1:42 PM

16.10 me too but looking at 17.04 :-)

@Serg Hello fecked Sergiy ! :D

I just sneezed and my lower back got the jolt of pain .

@UbuntuUser my condolences.

@Serg wat do
@Serg fun

1:44 PM
@JourneymanGeek hahaha ... yes indeed : CONDOLENCES @UbuntuUser ! :D ... for runinng the latest and greatest operating system out there ... :D :D :D

(I have a posready2009 eval VM ;p)
Its... XP with nearly everything stripped out

@Serg lumbago?
We call that "Hexenschuss" (witch-shot) in German.

lol
misses having a comfy chair ._.

@ByteCommander I've no idea what's it called but it hurts :)

@Serg get yourself some ... you know what ... :D

1:48 PM
I had some brandy yesterday to celebrate my 10 year anniversary . but i can't have any of that now - i've got to go to work later
i hope i didnt pinch a nerve again
i dont have money for chiropractor

@ByteCommander To be honest ... I can't see much difference to ABP or advantages ... but it works as it should @Zacharee1 ! :)

2:04 PM
@Serg yet another reason why the Americans insisting on no health insurance are dumb.
In Germany that would be covered by your statutory health insurance.

@Serg my insursance allows me for 50 visits a year to one if I ever need one.

@ByteCommander Health insurance here is still expensive thing

Expensive, but if you ever need it, it's worth it.

@Serg 130 euro a month. including dental care. I have to pay the 1st 385 euro myself and then have 450 euro a year for dental care and 100 euro a year for glasses.
any doctor visit is free. medicine after that I reach that 385 is free too

2 hours later…
3:39 PM
bad situation. Lower back pain, phone running out of battery, and i mght have forgotten laptop charger

hello
good afternoon

hi

how are you doing @Serg?

@IanC not too good. Lower back pain, low on phone battery, showed up too early for work, so now have to wait one hour

@Serg damn, hope the rest of the day gets better for you! How is the new semester week schedule working out?

3:52 PM
@IanC ok actually. it looks scarry but i have lots f time for homework. Plus i like that i work on weekends. Less time to argue with parents,haha

Should HTTP links like http://apt.ubuntu.com/p/xdotool be edited to APT links like apt://xdotool/?

@Serg working on weekends/holidays is alright when you get used to it, at least I've done it for a year and I actually sometimes enjoy it

@EliahKagan I'm asking in connection with this suggested edit: askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits/669323

@EliahKagan maybe the link works with both protocols?
I can open it with a browser (that later tries to install the package with aptURL)

@IanC yeah, and there's less people on campus, so not as busy

4:00 PM
@EliahKagan the first one redirects me to apt.ubuntu.com/p/xdotool and proceeds to launch a GUI installation dialog for the package

So, no reason to prefer the second one? Do you think the suggested edit should be rejected then?

I don't see any use for it... I skipped it as I'm so much lazier than you

now I rejected

So, what's going on here? It seems like at some point too much was edited out, and now it no longer asks a question. This isn't a reason to keep it closed -- we can just edit back in whatever is missing. But I'm not sure exactly how much description should be put back.

Q: No wifi on dell inspiron 3543

GilmaHere is the output from running the Wireless Info Script

Btw that relates to this item in the reopen queue: askubuntu.com/review/reopen/669322

4:08 PM
oops, careless of me, I edited their edit without retrieving the original question from the revision history. I've put the information back in now
editing again haha

Thanks. Now I don't have to figure out what to put back. :)

@Zacharee1 you haz time for making two icons plz ?

uh
maybe

@EliahKagan thanks for catching the mess I made of it :S

No problem. ...So, they've tried everything suggested on the question it was duped to?

4:12 PM
@Zacharee1 nothing complex, just color and gray icon. Should be something like clipboard icon

ok

I deleted that part, because it pre-dated any dupe suggestion, so we have no idea what they have tried

Q: What are the differences between Ubuntu and e.g. Mint?

craeshFirst of all: I'm a Linux Mint user for about 3 years now. I was a Ubuntu user for about 7 years before and a Debian user for about 5 years. I know the Debian way of working, experienced its evolution and the rise of its derivatives. I would consider my experience level as advances, but I'm not a...

@Serg what color?

@Zacharee1 one can be light brown, one grayscale

4:17 PM
ok

@Zacharee1 basically this
no need to make it too pretty, square shapes will do
squares and circles

@cl-netbox I have 16.04.

4:37 PM
@Serg

Probably better with a brighter filling and some lines than solid color.

@Zacharee1 can you put like a white page onto there ?
And yeah, with some lines maybe

sure

Owl-right, quartus lite is installing. Hopefully it'll work without issues.

4:46 PM
Smexy stuff
@ByteCommander you like ?

Maybe add some (3?) text lines in the upper half or a big letter (A maybe) or a pencil diagonally (/). Looks so empty right now...

how big is this icon going to be?

It's for an indicator, so it will be reduced to 16x16 on the top panel
So probably those lines would have to be thick

Meh

4:57 PM
Is that a bacon clipboard?

I love hugs

mebeh @EliahKagan

I'm sure @NathanOsman would appreciate this
Bacon clipboard
I should have called it that instead of clipboard-autoedit-indicator

Judging by its color, it appears the bacon may have been overcooked somewhat.
