@ByteCommander And I can't understand why I get so many underwear adverts... Nor why every time I sign into the Google advertising settings it thinks I am a woman between the ages of 30 and 40! And it's thought that for years! It always goes back there no matter how many times I set it straight! :D
@ParanoidPanda maybe they classified you as a panda >:)

@ByteCommander: What really gets me is that some sites prevent adblockers from functioning properly and that some are trying to pass laws against them.
@Rinzwind Thanks. I knew it has a command line. But I actually wanted to know the internal commands it uses. I'm assuming it uses xrandr and other cli tools
@Anwar A reboot is always a good idea ... the fedora developers recommend to install and upgrade software from a virtual console and reboot afterwards to avoid problems ! :)
@cl-netbox well.. I'm not against reboot. (Though Linuxes used to brag about this thing in old days) Anyway the problem is updates affecting unexpected areas
ah. Nice! Can you check if this answer making sense? I think unionfs and aufs both support this feature. (I only read about them) askubuntu.com/questions/421040/…
If you can even write an answer/fix that answer, it'll be great :)
nope. as far as I know you can't install OEM from an official version :P at least not with a normal install; you'd need to do some parameter settings during install I assume
@cl-netbox actually Mint modifies/patches many core ubuntu packages. On the contrary, Ubuntu GNOME just uses the standard Ubuntu repo. You can turn a GNOME to Unity and vice-versa
@Rinzwind I don't have enough experience with this community. Also didn't use Mint much.
While looking at the output of journalctl -f I noticed that apparently compiz is notified about (and logs) every search I make in the entry bar (or the search bar) in Firefox.
Typing into the entry bar something like
results in the following lines in my log
Okt 30 18:24:59 big compiz[9072]...
@Anwar You'd think, but it's actually very hard to get Unity off a system, I've already killed a few through trying and I have heard plenty of others here having trouble. Unity is just too far integrated into the system, its claws go in too deep. :P
@ParanoidPanda what do you mean? deleting the ubuntu-desktop kills anyhing unity related and {otherdesktop}-desktop will install that (and if it does not have unity, no unity)?
Have you ever compiled GNOME from source and compared the SHA hashes to that of the ones downloaded from the repo?
They're different, because the "open" GNOME source code isn't the actual version. It's a very heavily trimmed-down version to act as a front to make the ones in the repos (that actually contain the spyware) believable.
And you want to know something even worse? GNU approached the NSA about this project, not the other way around.
