I preferred rhythmbox until I tried mpd
@MarcoCeppi: re tablets, xsetwacom may be helpful if you can't find anything nicer to configure
@RogerPate I just had a bad pen - I used another pen and the sensativity was fine. I'll try xsetwacom though - thanks!
:11558 I LOVE MPD, I used it for a long time when I was sharing an apartment with a few other guys. We all synced up to one MPD server
yeah, I've been very pleasantly surprised
had tried out moc, and it worked well, but mpd is just a little better in many areas
regarding comments on askubuntu.com/questions/9853/…, does ubuntu use ~/.Xsession or ~/.xinitrc? I see references to .Xsession for debian, and haven't found a clear answer when searching yet

Q: Where can I find interesting Ubuntu discussions?

Ask Ubuntu is a Q&A site rather than a discussion board, a bug tracker, or a poll/survey site, but I really love Ubuntu and want to discuss those things with other users! Where can I discuss topics that aren't appropriate to ask on Ask Ubuntu?

opinions?
I made a change
ah, great change
could you flip the question to wiki too, please?
I would describe it more but this is my thrid day awake and I'm about to crash
sure
np, I figure I can go through it and add description every 6 months or so — if someone doesn't beat me to it

Q: Current GNOME Interface in Ubuntu 11.04?

Shark Possible Duplicate: Will Unity be the only option during install I am wondering if it will be possible in Ubuntu 11.04, to use ordinary (the current) GNOME interface like the one in Ubuntu 10.04, because I don't really don't like the Unity look. Thank you.

Oli
This is not a duplicate of the question it has been marked a duplicate of.
Oli
This one is asking if Unity is the only shell available to users in Natty and the other is asking if Unity will be used on other future (and perhaps past) releases.
@Oli: I think you're right, but I also think the question you link is a duplicate of another I've read recently
and, honestly, those two do seem rather close
getting rather tired of all the Unity stuff myself

Quite interesting that askubuntu.com/questions/4658/… is our highest viewed question!
:11607 people might be viewivg it not only for that particular driver but olsa to learn something on installing drivers in general. Many of them might come via Google search. Just a guess.
@TheX Good morning. You wake up early.

@marenostrum 6:30 am every morning
13:21
:11610 How do you call such a person in Eglish: "An early bird"?
Yeah...
I have to be at work at 6:45 am :P
I mean 7:45 not 6
:11613 Oh, OK. So are you at work at the moment?
I work at a Public High School, IT/Network Admin
:11616 Nice.
It is aright...
pay isn't the greatest, but I guess that is what you get when you work for the government
but what other job lets me do what I want when I want?
13:31
:11611 the early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese
@RogerPate lol I have never heard the mouse part...
can't type this morning

Hi everyone

o/ hi
Oli
I wish you were forced to write a comment when you downvoted something. I know that would get rid of the anonymity of voting but still. I'd like to have an explanation of why some of my posts get negative votes.
It's highly encouraged, but would never be enforced :P
I agree it really should be STRONGLY suggested to the user
16:21
@Oli can we see a sample of such questions that are getting voted down?
Oli
5
A: Why do indicator applets exist?

Oli Why make something that already exists and is useful? Why change for something that no has usability? Design-over-function. It sounds harsh but the original remit was the cut down the number of icons and standardise the way they work. There's little consideration for what these icons need t...

Oli
Perhaps not the best example (because it's easy to see that somebody could disagree)
It has 7 upvotes...
Oli
That's the question, not my answer.
Oli
Mine is +1/-1
16:24
Oh sorry, i thought you meant the actual question, my bad
at first glance I would say because it is so long... myself would not want to read all of that when I am looking for a simple and concise answer...
which I think is one of the primary goals of askubuntu
Oli
You would vote against something because it is a long answer?
Oli
The goal here is to be accurate and helpful.
No, I would just be less inclined to read it
I can't say why the user down voted it, just saying that is my guess as to why...'
I have to go.
:11642 you can't force someone to give a reason, what's to stop me from saying "fdafdsafsdfsaf" or even the deceptive "+1 blah blah blah"?
Oli
:11664 Very true.
Oli
16:34
Unless, that is, the commend was prepended with "Reason for down-vote:"
Oli
*comment
I can still type in the two examples I said :)
ah, you mean automatically insert text in the comment
that just tells you who, not why
and the comment could be deleted; if you just want to remove anonymity, that's one thing (and technically possible, of course), but trying to force someone to give a reason is futility
16:54
:11651 Great answer
@Oli: fwiw, I feel your pain; looks like I just got ~5 downvotes for pointing out that someone posted a duplicate answer (programmers.stackexchange.com/questions/35/…)
Oh snap! I just realized that all the other SE sites have one giant chat room (chat.stackexchange.com)
Feels special for Ask Ubuntu
hmm, I actually wouldn't mind combining more (though if they let us use custom clients...) as I'm now switching between AU, SO, and SO.M chat
I do see AU becoming one of the larger SE sites, and it makes sense for separate chat in that case
17:10
I would really love if Ubuntu used this chat for support over IRC - I think if a client comes out it would really help facilitate that move :)
I don't know how to check my work phones voice mail. I have never actually had anyone call me back here - let alone leave a voice mail. Everyone always calls my mobile. Thing is th guy who setup the phone system left two years ago. Really not sure who to ask :P
I take it someone left you a voice mail just now? :P
Yeah, this morning
@Oli I feel your pain, I got down voted for suggesting that someone dual boot windows so they can play their windows native games...
did the question explicitly state they didn't want to do that? in those cases, I'll leave a comment like "I know you said XXX, but really, that's easier"
@RogerPate I do not remember...
I think it just said something about the best solution to play Windows games... or something like that...
17:17
then it sounds like a reasonable answer; most of the time you just have to let downvotes not bother you
@TheX People are going to down vote - because you said Windows. It's like walking into a Church and saying "I know you want a divorce - have you tried Atheism?" It isn't going to be received well :P
as hard as that may be
@MarcoCeppi I know, I found out the hard way :P
People are just evangelist about things: Religion, Politics, and Operating Systems
Yeah I understand that... But I am a realist... Windows games are meant to be played on Windows, so that is going to be the best option... reality man, reality....
17:21
Reality and Truth hurt :P The reason I still dual boot: Skype doesn't work well on my hardware in linux. So I have to reboot. It's just the truth of it all.
ouch, communications is a bit different than games
I dual boot for CS5...
Oh and my printer
I must be spoiled that Ubuntu Just Works™ for what I need
@RogerPate I wish I could say the same
Almost everything works out of the box perfectly - but there are always quirks :P
17:25
Like Gwibber gave a lot of people headaches with this latest release
I guess we better start learning to use banshee....
Or just remove it and install Rhythmbox.
I have no problem with Banshee, just havn't used it much...
@TheX same here.
Rhythmbox works well and is default so I use it.
I will give Banshee a try next release.
@dv3500ea I have it downloaded.... just never used it... because like you said it is the default and works well...
17:33
I used Banshee - it's okay - it plays music
I don't care what the default is - as long as it works. If it doesn't I'll seek another solution
In my experience, Banshee was slower (uses some mono libraries) and crashed more frequently. That's when I used Rythmbox

dv3500eaThere was an Ask Ubuntu session at UDS-N on Friday 29th October 2010. What topics were discussed? What decisions were made?

This should probably be a community wiki but I don't seem to have the option to change it into one.
