heemayl got me again hahaha

user136984
How does one upgrade a Xenial installation to Yakkety?

user136984
I mean, I have a VM which I want to upgrade rather than having to download another ISO.

user136984
Is it possible because sudo do-release-upgrade -d is not working?

64
Q: How do I upgrade to the development release (aka. Ubuntu+1)?

dasenHow do I upgrade to the unreleased version of Ubuntu for testing?

7:14 PM
@ByteCommander nice comment :)
@Anwar You were right, it didn't work for OP & I deleted my answer. Now I understand better at least :S
@Serg I haven't tested Gilles' answer, but I tested Zacharee1's yesterday and it didn't work for me
ah well I leave my answer sitting there under heemayl's since it's sort of slightly different in that it's about the specific directory :S

user136984
@Rinzwind: None of the solutions work for me there.

user136984
It just tells me that there is no new release to upgrade to.

accepted answer is wrong askubuntu.com/questions/820531/…
@edwinksl close as no repro

@Zacharee1 yeah

7:23 PM
I already VTCed as unclear earlier today

now it needs only 1 more
@Zacharee1 wow how does that work? very cool...

@Zanna dunno, just know the first option works

one flip flop is on my foot, the other one is nowhere to be found. How did this happen?

@Zanna are there cats or dogs nearby

Maaaaagic

7:26 PM
@Zanna I tested, works, even rewrote Gilles's answer into a one-liner command .

@Serg I tested his answer too and it works for me
so it's weird

user136984
@Rinzwind: Strange, the upgrade command works here, but not in my VM.

@ByteCommander how do we say in German "it's so weird "?
I'm gonna start spamming that whenever OP says my answer doesn't work for them

lol
das ist sehr seltsam

Eigenartig !!!!

7:29 PM
@Serg nothing is more universal than just spamming ?

@edwinksl Yes, spam is the universal language of the interwebs

when I did my Trinity course, there was a german woman, and she taught us to sing Bob the Builder in German to encourage ourselves in times of doubt

I'm taking your word for it that mounting cloud storage works @Zacharee1

@Zanna i found a youtube video for that...

@Zanna try it :}

Why do I remember that??

@edwinksl no way!
@Zacharee1 I can't be arsed faffing with it, just take the +1 and wallow in it

7:32 PM
Bob the builder ( KAWAII DESU !!!)

@Zanna well that was British

@Zanna lmao

@Zacharee1 indeed, yes, very much so

user136984
@Rinzwind: Never mind, seems I just needed to tweak the settings a little.

7:34 PM
the german version is so nice rofl

No WONDER my internet's been so slow

user136984
I feel rather strange being on the same LTS version as everybody else, it just feels like we should have the LTS people, and then the non-LTS people, and yet there are no non-LTS releases currently not EOL.

user136984
:D

I was supposed to be productive today :/

user136984
It will feel better when 16.10 comes out.

7:36 PM
my monitor doubles everything on screen :(

user136984
@Serg: だれはかわいいですか

@Serg define "productive"

@ParanoidPanda Bob the Builder 就是可爱哦!

Workspaces will be assigned to lists in combo box

Which of these is filename expansion or globbing? Is it the square bracket([..]) or the flower bracket({..})? — lufork 19 hours ago

@Zanna flower brackets? haven't heard that before

I am always going to call them flower brackets
sorry for deleting...

that is an awful looking flower though

7:53 PM
me neither but they are quite floral ^_^

Can a moderator assist with creating a chat for the extended commend for question: askubuntu.com/questions/817790/…

@L.D.James your willingness to go this far to help is extremely commendable

@edwinksl Thanks!
@Serg Thanks for the assistance!

it was @Seth not Serg who did the mod-fu @L.D.James :)

@Zanna Thanks. I thanked him above. I also thanked edwinski for the compliment.

"za" and "se" are no longer sufficient to disambiguate

oh I am confused? apologies frown no I don't think it's me... oh well... maybe it is returns to flipflip hunt

it's easy to get that tab completion mixed up :)

locate -e flipflop

@Mateo That looks surprisingly usable - but time will tell.

That was probably Seth . . .

Sorry... my glasses are a bit foggy... I was only seeing one name between the two of you until now. .. grin
@Seth Thanks for the chat room!

Is there an easy way to safely get the latest Intel drivers on Ubuntu?

Intel... for HD graphics?
For their wireless cards?
SSD firmware?
We need moar info!
:P

8:44 PM
@ThomasWard I can help with that. Send it to me :P

user136984
@NathanOsman: Oh sorry, didn't see your reply, I went off to do something else. Well, I know my graphics drivers are really buggy, and I should probably also update my network drivers and the rest of my drivers. Intel's update utility only supported Windows last time I looked.

they have a graphics installer.
dunno about the rest.

user136984
They have one which supports Linux?

@Seth which is obsolete for 16.04

yes.
@edwinksl oh? Pretty sure I used it on 16.04..

user136984
8:46 PM
I guess it was a long while ago that I last checked...

Yeah, it supports 16.04: 01.org/linuxgraphics/downloads/…
@ParanoidPanda --^

@Seth wow looks like they finally have one for 16.04 (august 30 apparently). i stand corrected.

user136984
@Seth: Fabby and some other people around here told me that if I installed drivers using that one then my system would crash and burn and that I should wait for Ubuntu to release updates in the repositories. Is that not the case?

@ParanoidPanda I've used it about 3 times now and I haven't crashed and burned. You shouldn't take everything people say at face value :p

8:49 PM
I wouldn't use it on an atom board

two diffrent atom netbooks, and a atom mini computer I used it on had that issue

user136984
@Mateo I miss read that as "atom bomb" the first like 10 times I read it through! :D

user136984
@Seth: Well, I will have a go with that utility, I am used to things never working correctly anyway even if my machine and the machines of those around me are exactly the same, mine will never work as it should and will always have a crazy streak. ;P

user136984
9:06 PM
@Seth: Any chance you could just download this and let me know what the SHA256SUM is? I just want to make sure of its integrity, for corruption validation and security reasons.

user136984
It's a very small file, took me less than a second to download.

user136984

hi

@Rinzwind oh... oh god.

@edwinksl NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
goodbye chrome, hello firefox

user136984
@Seth: I am installing the latest graphics drivers now. Thanks! :)

user136984
Do you know if they have a similar utility for other drivers?

user136984
9:19 PM
Why isn't this program in the main repository?

user136984
Or in any of them for that matter?

user136984
I think that Ubuntu should really make update utilities for these drivers.

user136984
Utilities which are integrated into the system, and support a wide variety of drivers.

user136984
Do you think it is a good idea for me to not use my system during the upgrade?

think so

user136984
9:23 PM
Right, I have just been reading and it seems that Ubuntu should really be releasing upgrades for these drivers... Why do they basically never do that?

they are lazy?

This feature will be a tough one

9:41 PM
Any mod around?

@luchonacho doesn't seem like, but is there anything a high-rep user could help you with ?

@Serg You are a high rep user ;)

@Serg well, there is a post which has like 50 comments which should be deleted. I don't want to flag them manually. I read here (meta.askubuntu.com/a/8850/308164) you can alert a mod

@luchonacho link to the post ?

9:47 PM
you can just flag the post @luchonacho with a custom flag for mod
you don't have to flag each individual comment

I see. I kind of run out of flags today
feel free to do so :)

@luchonacho @Zanna flagged, mod's will deal with it when they see the flag

oops I did it too

@Serg @Zanna great! less clutter around..
the more the merrier

:)

9:49 PM
haha not to the mods
thanks for your good work @luchonacho :)

happy to help

Grrr... WOW.js is not distributed under an open-source license...

@NathanOsman the heck is WOW.js?

It delays CSS3 animations on a page until the user scrolls them into the viewport.

10:00 PM
@NathanOsman Doesn't seem too terribly different than Qt.
Non commercial: GPL3. Commercial requires a license.

@Seth No, Qt is licensed under the GPL and the LGPL.
@Seth LGPL allows commercial usage.
You just need to provide a way to relink the binary.

user136984
@Seth: Ok, well, that didn't go too well... :D

user136984
Is there some sort of apt command to downgrade packages?

user136984
Things are probably more optimal than they were before, but I do still prefer to have the little animations and what not between things opening etc... Now everything is rather, uhm, jumpy shall we say. :D

user136984
I can't seem to use ppa-purge on a repo.

Looks like you get to 5.6.5 using the PPA at launchpad.net/~kubuntu-ppa. — edwinksl 9 mins ago
this comment smells a bit like an answer to me ^ @edwinksl

but OP wants 5.7.4

@Zanna nuuu I'm doin it

user136984
@Seth: I will, I'm guessing things could have turned out worse though so I count myself lucky.

user136984
And now I know what Fabby meant. :D

@Zacharee1 basically same answer as raphael

@edwinksl but I have the source code for 5.7.4 with links to the instructions, and recommendations

minor difference

and explanations

user136984
@Seth @Mateo: I am doing what it says in the answer now. But I was almost certain that last time this happened I downgraded through the utility, but maybe not, it was a while ago when I was running 14.10 I think.

user136984
10:21 PM
@Mateo: I followed what it said in the answer, but the utility seems to have also installed the following packages which were not removed by the instructions in your answer: libva-tpi1 libva-egl1 libegl1-mesa-drivers vainfo i915-4.6.3-4.4.0-dkms libosmesa6 libva-wayland1 libva-glx1. What should I do with them?

user136984
Should I just purge them?

I wouldn't touch them unless you keep having issues.

user136984
Ok

user136984
Right, well, thanks all of you! :)

user136984
Goodnight! :)

@Seth poke

why do isps block proto41 but then decide to not support IPv6

@KazWolfe "security"

@Zacharee1 kicks

@Seth approves

10:46 PM
rages

why raging?

@KazWolfe Guess who finally got IPv6 at home this year... >:)

@Zanna To prepare.

hehe for what?

Eternity
brb

10:49 PM
hahaha

And I got such a nice prefix too...

@ParanoidPanda probally just downgraded - some packages were there before just bumped up in version - makes it even harder to get back to normal - that answer pins the versions of everything to that that is in the repos and removes/downgrades everything, so you end up with a stock core so to say

@NathanOsman Do you have your own /64?

/etc/modprobe.d$ cd Downloads
bash: cd: Downloads: No such file or directory
$ sudo !!

^ evidently it is bedtime...
10

@KazWolfe Sure do.

10:54 PM
@NathanOsman Can you get a routed 48?

No idea.

writing through the code, in the old'n'trusty vim . . .

@Seth cries
