Hi folks! (:
jrg
jrg
Oh great, how much trouble are we in this time? :D (welcome @RebeccaChernoff)
Question for y'all: for using login.ubuntu.com openid (as a SE login credential), does it work to put in https://login.ubuntu.com/+id/ or do you need the user identifier on the end of that also?
@jrg haha
jrg
jrg
One moment, let me check
trying to help someone saying they can't log in, and I notice they're trying it without the identifier. wondering if that's the issue.
jrg
jrg
Forgot that question, it was stupid
17:30
my answer was going to be "no" (:
jrg
jrg
ugh, now i remember why i strongly dislike openID. (:
hm.
so when i try to add a login.u.co openid as a SE login cred, i just did https://login.ubuntu.com/ and it seems to be happy
and it just logged me in.
but what if you add +id to the end
err wait, I mean literally
like https://login.ubuntu.com/+id/ (ie, instead of https://login.ubuntu.com/+id/<actual id>)
jrg
jrg
Ok.
Unable to log in with your OpenID provider:

No OpenID endpoint found.
so... if you knock off the +id, it works.
What is the policy concerning external deb-packages? http://meta.askubuntu.com/questions/2364/what-is-the-policy-concerning-external-deb-packages
ok, thanks muchly @jrg (:
17:35
@RebeccaChernoff \o/
jrg
jrg
you're welcome! :)
now to figure out how many openIDs I have connected to my account, and which ones I can safely delete. .... ;D
hello Rebecca :)
pfft, that's easy...the login credentials dialog will tell you! (:
it's so blue in here :P
jrg
jrg
The mods are overthrowing the natural chatroom order! CHAOS ENSUES! :P
17:37
Silences the masses
is anybody else totally excited about the hud?
sooooo cool
jrg
jrg
you kinda missed the excitement. ;D
what i really like about it though
is there something i can do about the ugly font rendering in chromium? it looks like wrong hinting or wrong 'rgb' setting, idk...
jrg
jrg
is developers won't have to actually change their apps to match it
unlike how they did with it appindicators.
yes indeed. the inkscape demo was particularly impressive for that reason
17:40
i don't care about the hud - i'm a mouse user. :P
Keyboards FTW
mouse users will be extinct by 2020 :D
jrg
jrg
Yeah, we'll all be voice users
i enjoy it while i still can :P
jrg
jrg
"Computer! Move that gimp image 2 pixels to the left. NO, your other left!"
17:42
@htorque eyetechds.com/research probably sooner than that.
jrg
jrg
Oh, a kinect 2.0 type thing?
i think kinect just spawned an industry of motion / eye tracking for TV / computers
good idea... especially for a HUD
all keyboard / eye tracking HUD would be wicked awesome beyond compare.
i'd prefer them to invent self-solving work items.
I want a auto-wiping toilet ... for the times when I just can't put my book down.
jrg
jrg
Agreed. :P
17:53
the hud works with dbusmenu
so all the current apps are covered
jrg
jrg
exactly. thats what makes it AWESOME.
except maybe eclipse, I don't think that one works yet, but it's in progress someplace
it's basically just allowing you to search through what dbus menu already needs to know to display the global menu to begin with
it's basically the firefox awesome bar, but for applications
Ubuntu has accessibility software that uses the webcam instead of a mouse...
I put that "Lenses from Icons" on brainstorm and blueprints. I just think it's going to get tedious to cycle through multiple lenses or memorize a bunch of keyboard shortcuts if the Dash is going to work.
what cookies do i need to allow for the chat to auto log me in? always have to click on the link to log me in. :(
currently i store cookies from stackexchange.com, stackauth.com and askubuntu.com
jrg
jrg
i think thats all you should need to have
18:06
:-/
Chrome issue? :P
The stack doesn't use any LSO's?
Chrome Y U HATE COOKIES!
jrg
jrg
i think htorque uses opera
no longer
opera → bloat, crash, render issue
so if i already need a second browser, i could as well just switch to it
18:08
Can't get on the Opera boat.... I still see
Opera, the land of Ads in your browser
<-numbskull noob enthusiast needs to shut up and learn...
I'm off to read more stuff I don't understand lol! Laters!
@jwdinkc no LSO for the chat... however if you're from the UK i'm sure you can get a listen.
18:29
evening!
...and I'm planning to write a charm for it.
@GeorgeEdison I've seen hints of a undocumented unofficial chat api
someone has chat running in IRC iirc
I know.
I tried that (what the user made) a long time ago.
whats with ppl writing Ubuntu as UBUNTU?
jrg
jrg
18:44
@GeorgeEdison yeah I see it.
Yeah, and why do they keep typing AskUbuntu
jrg
jrg
Can we have a autocorrect system on meta to change AskUbuntu to Ask Ubuntu? :P
@MarcoCeppi how should it be then? (soz for the ignorance)
Ask Ubuntu :)
jrg
jrg
and it requires a moderator edit to make it CamelCase?
18:45
I normally type AskUbuntu.com, is that ok? :P
jrg
jrg
stupid suggestions that make sense
I hate it when I see semiCamelCase.
jrg
jrg
@BrunoPereira you're one of thosee people. I hate you with a vegance. :P
If you're going to capitalize words, be consistent about it!
semiCamelCase is the rightKindOfCamelCase
butpleasedontdothis
or_thisPlease
AskUbuntu.com is the best way of referencing to the site!
I use this_for_variables and class_member_variables. ThisIsForMethods and AllFunctions.
are we talking about the same thing now?
jrg
jrg
I don't think we are...
ok, so askubuntu.com = good, AskUbuntu.com = not so good, askUbuntu.com = bad, Askubuntu.com = bad and AsKuBuNtU.cOm = really bad?
18:49
BE_DIFFERENT = {
        mix: casses_and_underscores(),
        'like': thereIsNoTomorrow,
};
youKnowYOU_wANNA = eval("true"); // just for kicks.
askubuntu.com is fine, Ask Ubuntu is if you're going to name the site and not the url
jrg
jrg
askubuntu.com = good, AskUbuntu.com = meh, askUbuntu.com = bad, Askubuntu = bad, Ask Ubuntu = awesomely epic, AsKuBunTU.cOm\ = lolwhut
@MarcoCeppi great... now your making me look to all the comments on the last 3 months... now I'm happy I havent joined longer ago!
jrg
jrg
lol.
@BrunoPereira don't bother
It's not a big deal
18:51
(I know!)
jrg
jrg
its fine, we all made that mistake at least once. or more. ;D
make it a "going forward thing"
I was one of the biggest offenders of AskUbuntu when it first came out
(I'm kidding)
AU for me (mostly because i'm lazy)
i saw unicorns just now!
18:53
lol
askubuntu.com is spelled %61%73%6b%75%62%75%6e%74%75.com by the way ;)
/rant - to any Diablo 2 players remaining... Does it not annoy you that 'tab' turns on and off your minimap and 'alt' is item name identification.. if i'm going from item name ident to map toggle (battles / pickups) I always alt+tab away from the game
cow king killed me like three times last night because of it!
@StefanoPalazzo I thought it was bit.ly/brV6lC
ono, that's evil

Q: How to deal with masked shortened-urls?

SidEaster eggs in Ubuntu vs. Easter eggs in Ubuntu – Spot the difference! The second one has a shortened url; I find this downright rude. What are your views on the usage of masked shortened-urls? Is it wrong to edit such content and replace the shortened url with the original one?

For bit.ly URLs add a + to the end of the URL to check what it is.
jrg
jrg
I <3 the +
18:58
nice
bit.ly/mxkFBv Self Reference at it's finest.
jrg
jrg
excuse me while i go barf up about @askubuntufeed :\
I wish I knew who that was.
shorturls should die. it's all twitter's fault.
jrg
jrg
there isn't even a need for that any more.
since twitter starting t.co'ning everything anyway
OMG, it's way too hard to make it <a href="loooooooooooooooong">short</a>
right
19:01
[And markdown is so difficult](http://jesusthisisalonglinknamenoonewilleverremeberit.net)
but such a good solution for RickRolling
rick rolls!
gotta go, cya!
jrg
jrg
haha
19:02
Legit domains with fun content are better than short URLs in a heartbeat
jrg
jrg
oh yeah
One day I will sell that domain
jrg
jrg
for april fools last year, i did a blog post about joining googles chromeos division, and moving from html5 straight to html7.
and i linked to a html7 page that was a rickroll. ;D
Neat! Stack Overflow just made it into our local paper!
jrg
jrg
19:08
@rlemon not bad
@GeorgeEdison :O coolness!!
19:34
@jrg ok so I seriously want to start some Ubuntu specific development and I think a good starting point (as it holds interest to me) is something like these... techdrivein.com/2010/02/…
are screenlets a good idea? should I be starting with something else?
basically under windows my programming knowledge never really had to expand past c# and the .net framework.
jrg
jrg
thats not really "ubuntu" development per se
what technologies and languages should I focus on if I want to do serious ubuntu / linux dev.
jrg
jrg
hangon
there is a question for that. ;D
c++ is a given.. :P
jrg

Q: What is the best way to develop apps for Ubuntu?

ShubhI want to write applications for Ubuntu. I do not know much about programming but I want develop for Ubuntu. I am trying to learn Python right now. What do you think is the best way to develop apps for Ubuntu? Can you point me to some resources that can help me get started with developing for Ubu...

19:37
but like what is the relationship of python (never written python)
is Quickly a IDE? or a GUI designer? or is it a language (just loading the site now)
jrg
jrg
Quickly is... weird
I haven't played with it extensively, but my understanding is its a project quickstarter that has a GUI designer (glade) and a few other related things for you
including packaging iirc
ugh.. ok this is overwhelming .
taken from the stand that I was a c# developer working solely with VS and .NET what would be the best starting point for me (something that would be similar enough that I would be comfortable with it)
jrg
jrg
you could work on mono projects.
ok.. better put (i know Qt creator is a IDE) what types of applications should i be using Qt creator for..
like, I wouldn't use VS to write up a quick BASH script.
jrg
jrg
idk. you're talking to a happy vim and ruby guy. :P
19:43
windows has tainted me...
Hi all
What role(s) do(es) JavaScript play in Linux? Where and how can I execute it and for what purpose.
For example: Windows does not have a JS parser so outside of the browser (and node, other implementations of v8, ect..) it does nothing.
ok well I just found out one of my answers... screenlets.
Well, Qt can do just about anything.
that I understand.. just like VS can do just about anything... but certain things make more sense to do in it than others (i would assume)
i'm just trying to get a better grasp on linux development.
Well for me - if it's a web application - PHP all the way.
If it's heavy on text-processing - PHP all the way.
19:56
ok is Qt a language??
Sort of...
QML is the markup language i thought.
Qt is a C++ framework that adds some special syntax to the language - that gets parsed by the MOC (meta object compiler) before getting sent to g++.
ok so Qt is the .NET of the non-windows world??
In functionality, yes.
19:59
ok... so my bread and butter should be c++ and python for scripting?? or other than screenlets what can I script with javascript?
and what js engine is used?
Qt meets all of my JS needs since it ships with WebKit :)
I can embed the WebKit rendering engine in any of my apps.
ok cool.
20:13
@GeorgeEdison a charm would be most excellent
20:29
/me prepares to record a Windows Vista DVD... Looks behind shoulder before pressing the burn button...
jrg
jrg
Lame bro lame. ;)
@rlemon the API is down, but the site is up. :P
i know!
hence the BOOOO
1.1 is up
only 2.0 is down.

Q: How to uninstall the experimental HUD PPA?

entonjacksonI installed HUD via these two steps: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:unity-team/hud sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade I tested it, but now I have problems entering Applications Menus, e.g. by Pressing Alt+E for Edit Menu. So I want to uninstall and so I removed the ppa from...

off-topic,
its about Ubuntu+1
and it has an answer
Bounty offered: How do I increase the font size in Dash? http://askubuntu.com/questions/97503/how-do-i-increase-the-font-size-in-dash #unity
jrg
jrg
20:42
so it should be happy
I think it will be useful in the future probably
jrg
jrg
Can you explain? I'm not sure its a valid, on-topic question.
It's answered now, so I'm fine with it
it should be deleted when it becomes irrelevant, IE after precise launches
until then it's very topical
jrg
jrg
ok.
/me sets reminder for a week before supposed precise release date
well, the PPA will still be there
sort of like how people are using the unity ppa's already
jrg
jrg
20:46
Oh, so the PPA will continue to be updated, even after precise release?
kind of like juju is?
jrg
jrg
I see. in that case we should keep it
i thought it was going to be more of a "this is a staging area, we'll stop updating it after we merge everything in"
It should be in precise this week or next
I will start off by saying - my issue is very odd... and I really have no idea where to start searching. <- Wth are those 3 points making in the middle of the sentence???
And wht kind of person formats everything with <br /> but all the "I"'s are writen "i" >> /angry face
have we been getting many of these lately?

Q: Mouse does not work after doing an upgrade

AmirAfter doing an upgrade $sudo apt-get upgrade Mouse does not move anymore. I am using Gnome-shell. Any help please?

hi would anyone be kind to render this page on different browsers on ubuntu and post screenshots?
http://peterffreund.com/shiksha/shiksha.html
This is a site using unicode woff font for devanagari(indian script) codepoints.
21:02
Oo
I am finding that it does not render correctly on my oneiric. but renders fine on windows7, and macosx browsers
thanks again for doing this
@viyyer seems fine here

Q: If I install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS now, will it upgrade to the official release in April?

DolphinI am wondering if I install Ubuntu Precise Pangolin now, will i be able to get the updates to it in April when the official release comes around.

jrg
jrg
wish i could vote. :P
its not a 1 man job! ^^ (you'll get you votes soon! :P)
21:08
@StefanoPalazzo it is not fine the woff fonts gets loaded. The rendering on windows7 and macosx is much better
@viyyer actually you might not want to do this: @font-face {font-family: Raja; src: url(fonts/Raja.woff) format("woff");
hang on, let me find something
@viyyer never mind, google webfonts doesn't support devanagari :\
you can try adding ttf and otf versions, setting the font size in pixels and setting the font-weight to 400
@StefanoPalazzo hmm.. strange that the rendering of the font is fine on other browsers.
well you know, no two browsers are alike :)
you'll always going to get something different on every OS.
oops I mean other oses
Ah I have another idea
just a sec (:
21:14
woff is supposed to be browser specific removing the rendering issues with oses.
@viyyer it's hard for me to tell the difference. does this look any better?
this is the serif version
ok, so now that i have implemented my own shitty version of MVC arch in PHP, does anyone have a solid framework that implements the same design pattern that also encompases things like breadcrumbs and other handy little things that are always a pain to re-invent
if not you might want to post a screenshot of how it looks on windows :) those are two fonts that ship with Ubuntu (and any other Linux, possibly Android), called FreeSans and FreeSerif (i.e just put "font-family: FreeSerif, Raja;")
@StefanoPalazzo Those two font's don't look too good
There is lohit which is a good font..
the first of the two is surely better
@viyyer Ubuntu ships with Lohit, but I'm not sure it's the right one
21:25
I notice the first screenshot has the conjuncts done well
@viyyer I've got Lohit Bengali, Lohit Gujarati, Lohit Hindi, Lohit Punjabi and Lohit Tamil. is any of those the one you want?
if so, you can also just put font-family: "Lohit ???", Raja;
and it'll pick up the first font if its installed, the second one if not.
@StefanoPalazzo lohit-hindi is the devanagari font.
21:30
I got another freebe!
@BrunoPereira eww - why is your font so hard to read.
sweet
@rlemon its windows
@rlemon do you know to read devanagari ?
21:30
unacceptable.
@viyyer I struggle with english...
so, no.
Guys, I have been seeing some questions with "mouse stop after today's updates", I just updated and my mousepad stopped working. Any one having this?
hoooow can i fix the ugly font in chromium?
Anyone updated his 11.10 system today?
@BrunoPereira I'm going to update to 11.10 soon if that is what you mean :P
21:32
I'm waiting for the beta 1 of 12.04 :)
@JorgeCastro true, must be at least 2 questions on main just today. Was thinking weird: user fault. Same thing happened just now with me
Alpha is a bit too crazy :P
jrg
jrg
@BrunoPereira yeah I updated
@BrunoPereira I did. but i'm on a desktop with a classic mouse.
jrg
jrg
whats up?
21:34
@jrg seen 2 questions today about mouse stop after update?
jrg
jrg
@BrunoPereira nope.
links?

Q: Mouse does not work after doing an upgrade

AmirAfter doing an upgrade $sudo apt-get upgrade Mouse does not move anymore. I am using Gnome-shell. Any help please?

only can find 1 :S
@jrg my mouse pad stopped working after update :S
jrg
jrg
@BrunoPereira trackpad or a mouse mouse?
trackpad
jrg
jrg
um... synaptic trackpad?
because i have a fix for that. :P
21:36
@jrg FTW!
@jrg shoot
jrg
jrg
2
A: How do I enable my synaptics trackpad?

jrgNote, this involved adding a third-party PPA - proceed with caution. More on the dangers of PPAs here. First, make sure we're both experiencing the same problem. Run the following in a terminal: cat /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf You should see something like the following: ...

@StefanoPalazzo I don't think it is an issue with rendering itself. I have devanagari fonts rendered fine
I hereby proclaim "BLAME @jrg" be over and, "@jrg has a fix for that!" begin!
@jrg any idea why it would stop after an update (no other repos, only Ubuntu)
jrg
jrg
21:37
@BrunoPereira no idea.
@viyyer yeah. I don't think it is a rendering issue either. but then I don't know how they're supposed to look
jrg
jrg
but i'm currently using that PPA for my trackpad
and i don't think there way an update to that package
it's more of an issue of this webfont rendering fine on other os and not fine on linux
a screenshot from a windows or mac computer would help. I'm not sure what you're looking for
give me a minute
21:39
@jrg let me finish this vista crap issue and I will test (gold will be paid if that is the same as you had and if it works!)
jrg
jrg
@BrunoPereira :)
:..(
jrg
jrg
@htorque gotta love that. :(
at least it's not too bad with such a graphic
21:40
YaY Unicorns!
@htorque rip tab
@rlemon lol
[I wonder if this works](chrome://crash)
nope :\
two words: adobe flash.
what kind of reputation does softpedia hold.. are they the new cnet
@htorque where's the quot from?
21:41
you don't know? :-o
@Alvar Original Series !!!! (must be a BSG fan)
@rlemon of?
GET OUT, NOW!
:D
@rlemon good reputation, not great, good
@htorque not until you tell me!
21:41
@rlemon I passionately despise them :) they are a content farm, if you ask me
softpedia is like tucows, no?
@StefanoPalazzo cmon tell! :P
I got an email the other day from them... softpedia.com/get/Internet/Internet-Applications-Addons/…
jrg
jrg
Softpedia sucks.
@htorque I've only seen TNG ...
jrg
jrg
21:43
They mirror the downloads (or at least they used to) - at least a place like say, FreshCode/freshmeat links to your project download page
@rlemon they will do anything to get you but normally there is no problem with the content, careful where you click tough
jrg
jrg
Also, I hated with a passion the fact they didn't use the PR screenshot package I put together for people like them when I was working on that project which is now to be never mentioned. :P
@viyyer the only difference I can see there is that it has no hinting
@Alvar Original Series > TNG && Picard > Kirk // so really it's a toss up, watch them both
21:45
@jrg Oo, really?
@rlemon duuh you are a bit slow...
@rlemon are you trying to get a room in sheldon's apartment? ;D
@rlemon scroll up
@htorque no but i 100% agree
and no one likes DS9
21:47
@rlemon scroll up to my latest message to htorque
why in the hell would I want to watch a show about a space station! It doesn't go anywhere! I may as well be watching Shining Time Station.
@Alvar which is why i said it...
jrg
jrg
DS9 is horrible.
watch original series - it's awesome.
jrg
jrg
although I do like the Defiant - shes not a bad little ship
this is what you mean, yes?
21:48
@rlemon hehe
uhm, if the image would work
picard's cool :P cause he's French!
Does it matter who was what where in star trek? It sucks!
jrg
jrg
there you go @StefanoPalazzo. :P
thankyou (:
21:48
@BrunoPereira GTFO!!! NOW!!!
jrg
jrg
@BrunoPereira LEAVE US YOU HEATHEN NERD.
:P
the only true "star" saga ever made was star wars!
(SG1 > SGA) > SGU
@viyyer if that's what you mean: this is a setting you can change in ubuntu. One is without hinting (windows) and it has more contrast, the other (Linux) has lower contrast but more accurate shapes and kerning. I bet you can change it in windows as well, but the default settings are different.
jrg
jrg
Star Wars: Spacer Opera:
Star Trek: Betterment of Man Kind.
21:50
@BrunoPereira These are not the opinions you are looking for
@jrg I see your fault there... /ignore
jrg
jrg
Also, we should probably move to Mos Eisley.
that looks very pretty
jrg
jrg
What, Mos Eisley?
@BrunoPereira If I were a Romulan I would slap you!
21:51
SGA > (SG1 + SGU)
@BrunoPereira I would agree if not for the fact that SG1 was not cut short before it's prime, and SGA was.
firefox and then googlechrome.. let me tell you even ie maintains the integrity in rendering
@rlemon yeah, was a shame but still find it very very good
SG1 season 1-3 was a little lame... granted.. but after jackson lost his mushroom cut everything was ok.
@BrunoPereira I did like the final scene, landing in san francisco bay
@viyyer it's pixelated, no?
21:54
(that is where the bridge is correct? I'm not so upto snuff on american geography)
ANyways... been swell chaps. ttyl
@rlemon last episodes where a bit rushed, I did not enjoy them, normally people would say the ending makes the series, I found that the opposite (as most ppl) but SGA was still the best SG of all imho.
@StefanoPalazzo The pixelation is not the issue.. the inability to connect the conjuncts is the problem.
here is the ie9 rendering
top = chromium
bottom = opera
why is the hinting so reddish?
jrg
jrg
I'm slightly colorblind, so that might be why I can't spot it. :P
whoooot
