@Zacharee1 o/\o hi fivez
17:01
lel
OK, finally, what link do i provide to the nomination ?
this ?
all of them
@Serg "forbidden"
@Serg I get Forbidden on that link.
the site needs to say you signed
OK, got it
Anonymous
@Rinzwind stats (which will be fun/easy), history (easy, but boring because reading), english (moderate, and boring)
@onebree we can do stats using AU stats and english is the norm here >:)
@Serg but serg if you only wanted to test for your score you would get you wouln't have to go through this hell you even can do a nomantion post without having the coc signed and withdraw it then ;)

My stats project is this:
https://github.com/onebree/rails-issues-stats
Em . . . nobody told me that . . .
>_<

I am making it 100% more complicated by doing some programming, but it is not complicated for ME.
Japanese are funny
Well . . . At least i have the experience now
its only that you need to link to the launchpad in case you really nominating
@Serg look at the star wall:
Um. No, it doesn't seem to be there anymore blush
already read that one . . .or you wanted a different link ?
Anyway, there's a data.se query that gives you your candidate score. Hang on.
how do you use it

Whats the point of telling me about older versions?
17:12
@terdon it is in the other chat starred
only 16 for me :p
@Serg Not bad!
:3 i can haz mod powerz ?
noooo, @Videonauth's passed me in rep
@Serg yees
17:14
@j0h Because you're trying to install a newer version but an older one is already in the repos. This could lead to dependency issues.
@Zacharee1 :D
@Serg Seriously, the powers pale before the drudgery.
@terdon so how hard is it being a mod ?
Also , do mods take drugs because of the drudgery ? :D
dreaded drudgery drugs done diligently
@Serg lots of coffee
@Rinzwind I already do that without being a mod :)
17:17
@Serg Depends on the site. On U&L, not too bad. On AU... ask me again in a month if I win.
@Serg No! We take drugs because we can.
Well . .. smoke first, and then . . . gonna draft my nomination essay :D
@Videonauth exactly 20, nice
almost F1 Canada :)
Anonymous
I am sure the code I am writing is messy, but I am not too concerned with that right now
17:19
@terdon I am sure you will win
@WildMan I'm not. There are many candidates, after all.
actually im considering pulling back my nomination
Why?
because i dont see much chances right now
people will vote after the candidate score mostly and there im far down the list meanwhile
Well, you are quite new, that's true. New users very rarely win. On the other hand, you've really participated in the time you've been here.
17:21
Bruno won after being in the site for 4 months.
@Videonauth Not even. Sadly, I think most people vote for the rep.
@jokerdino Oh? There you go then.
@terdon not true all the time. I got in.
@terdon, there are a lot of good candidates but I believe you are right at the top
@terdon or that as if that really makes a difference
I got the most first choice votes in mine.
17:21
@WildMan Shucks, thanks :)
Though what people saw in me, I never know.
@jokerdino An appreciation for tea, probably.
I had a different ava back then :P
In that case, I'm stumped. :P
What was it?
@jokerdino they probably liked your nickname.
17:23
It was the Dino-Joker one.
That's even better
user136984
Why did someone VTC this?
@jokerdino Ah!
Here's a suggestion for your next one, in the same theme:
lolzer
17:25
Side note: am i the only dude with the real avatar here ?
No offense to any idiots smokers in the room.
Also, time for a smoke.
@terdon xD
@terdon oh the irony
@Serg I would go for hypocrisy
17:26
@Serg Hey, that's why I can get away with saying that sort of thing.
@Serg I started with a real ava actually.
@Zacharee1 Self awareness not good enough for you?
wai u no animate favicon
@terdon no
Tough
Id say sense of humor @Zacharee1
17:26
@Serg totally
@Serg Precisely, a sense of humor and a racking cough will see you through old age.
Or so I hope, anyway.
I probably will be quitting soon. Reason ? American cigarettes don't tastebas good as Chinese
Also because my gf
@Serg how about your health?
or nah
@Zacharee1 my health is a mess anyway
well start somewhere
17:32
Im half deaf from birth ( have onlu one ear ), damaged lower back, one leg shorter , constant alergy in the US
Also wear glasses
bbl wife duties
@Serg o_O
@Serg Hey, at least that way, you can't hear yourself wheeze!

The only thing I don't like about this stats project is that we can only have 40 records... I would prefer 100 for my project since I am looking at 8300+ populationm size
@onebree That does seem like a small sample size.
17:43
@terdon black humor and dark humor are very different things
@terdon yeah, that's dark humor now.
I'll grant you that I did have a double take after writing it and that I'd normally use dark in English, apparently, both work. Not all of the English speaking wold shares the prejudices and associated history of AmE.
Hello, AskUbuntu users !

My name is Sergiy, but for the most of the world I am either Serg or 谢尔淇. I've been learning Ubuntu for around 2 years, have been on AskUbuntu for around 1.5 years. Most of the time you can find me on the command-line type of questions, or those related to Unity desktop (providing scripting solutions that enhance desktop usability) , as well as in the AskUbuntu chatroom. Time to time, I comment on meta posts, but rarely post answers there.

I can specify only few advantages of me being a moderator:
how's that ?
17:45
@Zacharee1 Yeah. I wouldn't expect that to be understood that way outside the US though.
user136984
I ate a dictionary once, so I prefer to trust my stomach. :P
@terdon all of Imgur gets it
@ParanoidPanda but you also have cake in there
@Zacharee1 Yes, US
@terdon Imgur is global
@terdon and so is UD
Anonymous
@terdon It is a level 100 course, meaning first year... I am not too worried. I have th population saved, so I can always increase the sample size
17:46
@Serg Not really good. Why say it's not serious? That seems pretty counter productive.
@terdon I don't think he really wants wants to be a mod
@terdon well . . .that's an honest statement
The whole thing seems to be a very half-hearted attempt. "I can specify only a few advantages" etc.
@Zacharee1 yeah, sort of. I've never been a mod so a bit shy of trying
If you don't want to win, there's not much point in nominating yourself, really. I don't see any reason why you shouldn't go for it, but if you do, actually go for it.
user136984
17:49
@Zacharee1 I'm a sponge for knowledge. ;P
I've not had any moderating experience in the past, but I am always willing to learn and step out of comfort zone, since this is exactly what has brou
ght me to Ubuntu and this site.
@Serg Better! Remember that most mod candidates haven't been mods before.
Nomination posted
31/40 , same score as @ByteCommander \0/
@ThomasW. would you be able to crack the IP phone if I used CloudFlare SSL? (I'm assuming yes for now)
maybe i should have also said "Why nominate myself ? Because YOLO thats why"
17:56
lol
@Videonauth, I saw several of your comments in the review queue, the wording is new for me, so I am not certain if you are aware of the AutoReviewComments - a hint just in case :-)
user136984
What exactly happens during the primary phase of the election?
@ParanoidPanda If I remember correctly, we get to vote on multiple candidates. I think the nominations become questions and you can up/downvote them or something. Not sure though.
user136984
How many users are allowed into the actual elections phase?
Yeah, that was about right:
79
A: There's an election going on. What's happening and how does it work?

ben is uǝq backwardsWhat's happening? The community is electing diamond ♦ moderators; those individuals responsible for moderating the site the election is happening on. Moderators are elected by a three phase process: Phase 1: Nomination Duration: 7 days Anyone may nominate themselves to be a moderator as long...

@ParanoidPanda 10
18:03
@ParanoidPanda 1 MILLION
> After 4 days the top 10 nominees by vote advance to the election phase.
@terdon So that is how it works? :D
Yup
I like that a lot
@Mateo any new XP apps?
@ParanoidPanda as many users as possible as long as buffer doesnt overflow
18:05
The primaries act as exit polls too. They tend to give you a good idea of who's likely to win.
@Zacharee1 x apps ;p not xp apps
@guntbert ehr :) you mean that auto comment script ? im using this already :)
you said they were XP applications I thought
Xapps ;)
18:07
I swear you said Solitaire and Minesweeper were the Windows XP apps that you made work
@Seth do mods have the "privillege" of endorsing certain candidates for the elections ?
are they the delegates?
:p
no, they are ubuntu desktops apps on the ubuntu phone
then how did I see XP?
i also see xp . . . and i've been seeing it all over china for the past 3 weeks
18:08
someone else said xp because of how they look
oh
@Serg o_O
oh noes
the backend for the wrapper is still pointing to xpw1.no-ip.org. I should probably change that
@Serg no
dino is disappointed by that , i see
18:11
@jokerdino :D
@Serg Mods can choose to leave a comment on a nomination. It's completely up to them though. In some elections, where more controversial nominees were standing, some people took umbrage to the mods getting involved but that seems silly. The opinion of the current mods is very relevant.
@terdon I see . . .time to prepare tea and cookies for enhancing mod opinion . . . .
lol
play the injury card @Serg. Really play it up
Hey, I can just about guarantee your victory if you manage to send tea and cookies to all mods before election day.
18:14
hmm
<--- may have a plan
@Zacharee1 Um. That's a bit of a heavy word.
lol , if only I had their addresses that would be the case
@terdon it is :/
I am not good at bribing though . . .
@Zacharee1 Thanks :)
18:16
Speaking of the "injury" card, i actually don't have any card . . . i mean, i don't have official disability or anything like that . . . .
@Videonauth, that's what I meant, never mind then :)
I just reworded some of them :)
and even created new ones
@Serg really?
@Zacharee1 yeah, i 've been to doctors in the US and in Ukraine but never got disability declared, not sure why. Probably not necessary
I guess that's a good thing ;)
18:26
i have the virtual box extra add ins loaded and mounted but ubuntu can't find any files in the /media/cdrom drive
mhmm a server vm ?
why isnt the cdrom mounted visible to linux
oracle vm virtual bos
box
did you have the extras installed within wirtualbox preferences ?
@JustinKaz it would be much easier to help you if you asked a question on the main site. Explain what the host and guest OSs are, precisely how you mounted and whether you mounted on host or guest, what you're trying to do etc. There are many details we need in order to answer and the main site is much better for that sort of thing.
@Videonauth nope... its not listed
When running a vm , there should be an option for installing extras from one of dropdown menus ( Files Edit . . .so on )
Speaking of vbox, i need to get my SSD back into the laptop at some point and regain all my scripts and vms
the iso is mounted
@JustinKaz download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/5.0.20/… this is the file, then open the preferences navigate t this tab and press the + signed icon and load the file
then you not need the iso anymore and you have an up to date iso build into this pack
@Fabby @A.B why didn't you sign for moderator elections?
18:32
They're busy with work and life outside the site @Faizan
which is what i am slightly concerned about , too
Anonymous
cool math is done
@onebree math is never done , it's infinite . . .just like human stupidity XD
Anonymous
uh . . .
18:37
is it so unusual ?
Anonymous
This is a community college and a gen-ed math class (compsci requires calc 1-3, but I got to take this instead of calc 3).
Anonymous
for rference, other students are looking up data found on wikipedia tables or sports teams records.
Now how do I stall these extensions?
much to much normal commit messages for my point of view ;p
@JustinKaz open the preferences of the VBox itself not of a VM
then navigate to the extension tab and click on the small icon on the left side with a triangle on it
this opens a file dialog in which you navigate to the just downloaded fiel and well load it
I already installed the package
18:40
you have to agree the EULA then and thats it
I'm aksing how to install it on the client computer
the vm
on the guest you go to devices and find in the main branch of that menu the entry for the additions
this should then mount it in the guess in /media/cdrom/
ls on media/cdrom = empty
mhmmmm
is that vm a server or a gui ubuntu ?
with server i had the same problem
cl servere
server - still getting acclimated to my new keyboard

Q: How would I limit connections to certain services, to be only accesed via connection coming sub-domains?

SteelShotI have a personall machine running Ubuntu 14.04.4 LTS. I use it to host a Teamspeak and a Minecraft server and also a website. I am trying to make sub-domains to only point to the right services. So for example using panel.domain.com would point only to https://localhost:8000 (CP Panel) using ...

@Zacharee1 CloudFlare doesn't add any protections against targeted exploit attacks - they're not an IDS/IPS. They may be able to help against DDoSes, but i could probably still breach the IP phone if hired to do so, CloudFlare or not
if i were so inclined
sec i just loaded up a server VM here on my machine to check around
@Serg I think it depends on what you need
@Serg if this is just for your own network, I use NetGear Smart Managed Switches
the core of my LAN is two 8-port ones, to my pfSense firewall
that's the thing, i completely new to the whole building home lab thing
Soo... I'm back until I lose my wifi signal again.
18:45
@Serg but if you don't need any advanced switch controls, VLANs, etc. you can get by with dumb switches
i have no clue what i need or dont need
the business/enterprise switches add a lot more features for those environments - virtual LANs, port authentication, etc.
the average end user doesn't need those.
@ByteCommander how u. Do you remember me
Weekends over 😞
Good night
I found it - I mounted /dev/cdrom
and dun dun DAAAAA
@Faizan wut?
18:50
@JustinKaz hmpf and i was actuall as well fiddling around in the vm
well not simply sh VBoxLinuxAdditions.run
@ByteCommander I asked how are you.
@JustinKaz if the installation fails you might need to install the build-essential oackage
It's 00.23am here I am going to sleep now. Good night to all.
Anonymous
okay, I must read for history class! Bye all
@Faizan Well, I'm more or less fine. The usual problems here and there, but it's all getting better. :)
And from where or when should I remember you?
19:08
@ThomasW. so I was right :p. Does putting it on HTTP secondary help at all or should I choose something even more non-standard?
@NathanOsman Are you around?
so how do I access a folder I added in the VM system
on the ubuntu system
First script since my return !

A: How can I automatically mute the sound of a game when I'm not playing?

SergThe script bellow relies on all native tools of Ubuntu, pactl and qdbus to determine active app, automatically mute and unmute as the app gains and focus from user. The app name is set in APP_ICON_NAME variable. You can use pactl list sink-inputs | grep icon_name to determine the value you need ...

\m/ I still got it
19:32
@RPiAwesomeness tada. Here I am :)
@NathanOsman \o/
So, I think I figured out why I couldn't send email via Hectane
I hadn't portforwarded to my server
I did that and I can now telnet to port 25
Oh awesome.
Would you be able to help me set up Hectane again?
Sure. Give me about 5 minutes.
19:38
@JustinKaz after you installed the gues additions you should be able to find this folder under /media/sf_username/

Q: Are questions more central to the user's DE on-topic here?

Paranoid PandaFor instance, would a question on GNOME Extension development or management which is not specific to Ubuntu, but rather GNOME, be on-topic here? So something that's more central and specific to the DE rather than actually Ubuntu itself.

@RPiAwesomeness back now.
Just had to get in front of my desktop :)
:)
I should have invited you to a room, but I'm not seeing the option now
So... I'm going to recommend building Hectane since it's pretty much the same number of commands as installing from the PPA and you get the latest release.
The PPA is... a bit behind, regrettably.
I'm on a Pi, can I cross-compile on my laptop?
19:45
Oh right.
Or rather, I'm running on a Pi
It's the same steps for compiling it though.
And Go has a pretty fast compiler.
sudo apt-get install golang
Already installed
19:46
In that case...
export GOPATH=~/go
go get -u github.com/hectane/hectane
That should do it.
(I assume you have Git installed too.)
Once that completes, you'll have ~/go/bin/hectane ready for use.
You can copy the binary wherever you want it.
user136984
Is anyone else finding that the GTK search functionality in GNOME 3.20 is broken?
user136984
And completely in dconf-editor... I can't use it to find anything there...
@ParanoidPanda I'm not using Gnome, unfortunately. (Or fortunately, depending on your perspective.)

@ParanoidPanda which example do you mean ?
@Serg is running for moderator! I just noticed that.
Now I have no idea who to vote for.
@NathanOsman you're the second person who said that
Now I'm extra glad I didn't run :D
I wouldn't have stood a chance.
Am I really that much of a competitor ? I doubt
user136984
@Serg Where? You mean on Meta?
19:57
@ParanoidPanda yes, i am addressing the comment you posted on my answer
user136984
Oh, go to go... Lighting... Need to turn my machine off before it gets smoked...
user136984
@Serg: I edited my question with "For example...".
@ParanoidPanda edited my answer, review plz
@Zacharee1 You should not be putting it web facing regardless of how you do it
@Zacharee1 the ONLY way I would have it web facing is with a known source IP (such as a trusted IP or network) being given access to that port where it's sitting facing the network
and even then if the remote IP that you give access to the thing is never static, then you can't safely do that
Argh... I can't mount this CD-ROM all of a sudden...

I heard that rebooting can solve many problems :-)
@JonasCz Windows.
It works in Windows...
@NathanOsman Probably only because you already have rebooted that enough times this week...
;-)
Occasional reboots are fine. If you need to solve just about any issue with a reboot, then something is really really wrong here
Does anybody (@moderator probably) know where I can find links to my private messages from/to moderators?
20:22
@ByteCommander I tried it on another Linux machine and it wouldn't work there either.
@Serg I had a coworker once who was a professional rebooter - he solved all client problems that way.
@NathanOsman Sounds like you're going to ask a question on the main site, huh?
Nah, I got the files now.
erm maveric is OT right ?
erm EOL i mean
20:39
Yes, 10.10 is eol
@Videonauth since an eternity
well ^^
input method seems to be taking up whole bunch of CPU O_o , i am not sure why
#!/usr/bin/env python3 or #!/usr/bin/python3 which one is correct, or are both correct?
@Videonauth both are correct . . . env is used just to determine location of python3 interpreter in case it's not in /usr/bin or linked somewhere, i remember correctly
20:50
ah ok
that for sure was something which confused me, one is writing it one way the other in an other way
@Videonauth can you please test out a script for me ? Jacob's reporting high CPU usage on his side, but on mine the script only takes around 2%, the high usage comes only from chromium
link or paste
@Videonauth you can use #!/usr/bin/python3 quite safely on ubuntu :) Link incoming in a second
The auto-mutting question
ah ok, well i not have chromium but lets see
@Videonauth i use /usr/bin/env python because i use virtualenv for all python things
20:56
@Videonauth you can test it with any other app that produces sound :)
cant say that it is much higher than without the script (its in the list called ./test)
