THIS IS INSANE. I have QoS on this router and the laptop is assigned low priority and the desktop high priority. Both are downloading stuff. So what does the router do? It allocates 95% of the bandwidth to the laptop. ಠ_ಠ
06:40
time to change the router ?
Hi
Hello everyone
@NathanOsman are you good at python ?
1
Q: pyosd works with interpreter , but not with a script

SergI am working on a script that would display arbitrary system information on screen. For that purpose I've been trying to use pyosd module. Consider the following 3 lines: import pyosd p = pyosd.osd() p.display("ASKUBUNTU") This works alright with python 2.7 interpreter, however , fails when r...

I'll take a look.
pyosd.error: Requested font not found
Hrm...
06:51
you might need to have it installed
@Serg Have what installed?
pyosd module
I have that installed.
The import works fine.
It gets stuck at the second line.
I don't know if this helps at all but:
>>> print pyosd.default_font
-*-helvetica-medium-r-normal-*-*-360-*-*-p-*-*-*
Em . . .it doesn't
Like i said, interpreter brings up the string to be displayed just fine
06:56
Well, I tried :)
Thanks Nathan, you are always ready to help, i appreciate that
I'm sure I could figure out your actual problem if I could just get the module to work.
@NathanOsman is there a difference in how interpreter and script work in python ?
There certainly shouldn't be.
07:30
If I can't figure out this python module , i will use osdsh. At least that works
FOUND ET !!!
8 GB pagefile. Windows, what is this?
<.< that has to be Windows trying to compensate for something . . . hmmm, if only I knew for what . . . micro . . . soft . . . .does that imply anything ?
07:46
The entire server has 40 GB of storage and it allocated 8 GB for the pagefile.

1 hour later…
09:08
16.04 seems to have removed some of the fonts used in the previous releases
09:55
@NathanOsman pagefile.sys ?
@NathanOsman @JacobVlijm got the pyosd working in 16.04 after installing x11 fonts, see my edit on the answer
10:22
@Videonauth I am inside the Live USB Ubuntu session. Can you reconfigure the locales here by dpkg-rekonfigure locales?
so your booted into your stick ?
Yes
and yes you can do that there its a full blown Ubuntu Instalation
inly thing i have found out the locale wont chaneh in terminal/TTY unless you have rebooted this si why im not sure what i did to solve it
@Videonauth It works by just doing sudo dpkg-rekonfigure locales! I set this this en.US_UTF-8 as the environment, instead of en.US which may be the cause of the bug. I think it is better to do the full command.
ok then i can add this to my answer
10:30
Yes, I also make my own notes to the body.
ok added it
Good!
Well now you have a complete ubuntu on a stick, btw this procedure works for other debian based distros too ;) you just need to find out how the adress is for running debootsrap and how the sources-list file looks like
10:47
Yes, thank you for the work! There was no thorough manual about the stick creation before. I hope that we get an answer to the other problem to access the whole encrypted Ubuntu HDD here askubuntu.com/q/768916/25388 I just cannot mount the disc. Probably, because I do some steps wrong.
i only saw that there are people already linking to this Q&A for the stick creation :)
i think the usb boot question you asked to day is related to hardware limitations of the USB bus itself while you easily can create a new stick from booting with one stick and making it you might not be able to choose which usb port has the highest priority when it comes to handling boot sectors
@masi
@Videonauth I would like to understand why.
no clue i bookmarked that question because the answer would interest me as well
@Videonauth I think the solution can be very useful in electronic development. Think about running two OSes in series :)
Let one system do one operation. Switch. Let the other do the one where it is the best. Switch. ...
11:07
YES! There's a bootloader unlock for my phone!! :D
Download from Google is at 14.4kB/s
OK up to 500
Hey guys, I want to find out what is "pining" regarding package management. Is this the right chat room to ask ?
pinning?
Yeah I don't get it either
13
Q: Hold packages back from updates without APT Pin?

MeiI know about pinning packages with Apt. That's not what I want to do. Other questions have been answered with either using pinning or by using pins temporarily. I don't want to do this. What I want to do is keep packages back the same way the kernel has been: # apt-get upgrade Reading package l...

ah there we go
2MB/s
wow, spotty internet today
11:23
@Videonauth Do you have any idea how to add whole USB stick encryption to your stick?
Well theris on one side to hold packages which means keeping them from upgrading, then you have the pinning which is a different process where you can pin an package to be downloaded form one ppa etc and you can pin by version and/or location
@user3005629
@Masi you would have to do that already on creation of he stick i think but not sure i never dabbled into this
@Videonauth The newer BIOS can prioritize USB :)
@Videonauth I can choose the USB :)
Wow, people really don't want to buy fake passports, huh?
So basically Pining is about using a desired version of a package ? (PPA or Ubuntu Repo's)
11:27
Excellent!!
It seems like selecting the version you want if it's available from multiple sources
Ok, I was thinking like with Synaptic you can lock versions.
Pinning seems awesome :D
@Zacharee1 @user3005629 yep thats it pinning you can pin by location and/or version even
fun
I'm terrified right now
I don't want to break my phone :p
But I really want an unlocked bootloader
Pin all the things!! :p
11:30
@masi thats cool sadly not evey bios is able to do this
@Videonauth I think every BIOS from 2013 onward can
thankfully
So if you have a somewhat modern computer
I wonder if there could be a way to make a virtual Bios? But maybe Maurice Moss is yelling "Your crazy it can't be done" somewhere far away that I can't hear.
yep this is what im saying im working here on a compaq 615 :p
@user3005629 I don't see the point
dual core 3 GB ram
11:32
@Videonauth lol
Compaq
Just derping
@Videonauth that is so old
@Videonauth Yes, but it is good to understand it. :) I opened a new thread about whole-media encrypted persistent USB Ubuntu 16.04 here askubuntu.com/q/769305/25388
@Zacharee1 yep but it plays nice with Ubuntu, except the wireless driver which wont come out of the box
but once you know which driver you need its easy
hmm
Well, if it can run Ubuntu, there's no reason to throw it away :p
11:34
im actually typing on it and it runs 16.04 flawlessly
only thing i have happening are the missing menu bars fromo time to time
but thats an known bug within unity itself and a fix is in the making
Is there a list of successful cases about installing Ubuntu Touch on unofficial-cellphones?
@user3005629 there are a ton of ports and guides for other phones
Great! I meant people showing they followed any of those guides and where succesful
I'm checking out some guides now
So I need a 1GB or greater SD card in my phone for this to work
I only have my 32GB data one
I have a spare phone but no so potent I don't remeber if it is Dual core, but I know the cpu is 1Ghz
11:40
@user3005629 Well there isn't a general guide
im still having warranty time on my note 3 so im not going to root it
You can't say, "Oh, the Xiaomi Note 4 has Ubuntu Touch on it, so that must mean I can get it on my ASUS ZenFone 2"
@Videonauth how?
Yeah I guess when you're hacking you have to go read all over the place XD
towelroot
@Videonauth no, how do you still have a warranty?
11:41
samsung note 3 ...
well its 3 years warranty i bought it with
and i have it since 2 years
that explains it
but to be honest the note 3 is awesome as it is , just give it a different launcher and youre happy with it
I like my fingerprint scanner on my Note 4
6.5GB left to copy off
blegh
11:43
im not so fond of the fingerprint scanners
Can someone send me an SD card with half-day shipping? :p
@Videonauth why
I guess it can be hacked with a mold (it's been proven), but meh
I don't plan on making glue molds of my hands any time soon
Have you tried "gluing mold" before ? @Zacharee1
no lol
XD
Then why wouldn't you try it out now ? LOL
@Zacharee1 i found them to be very unreliable till now
11:47
@Videonauth mine's nice
forgetting fingerprints and so on
it just had to be set up correctly
And the newer ones, like on the G5, don't even need you to turn on the phone
you just touch your finger to the scanner and unlock
1.5GB
almost done
c'mon Kingroot
ROOT
there we go
OK. It's copying to the SD card
YESH
12:04
Oh man I can't confidently install Ubuntu SDK in MATE
I had a lot of Black screens in Beta
I'll have to leave this Ubuntu Touch tut for later when I have time to reinstall Ubunut if anything falis
Copying my stuff back now
@user3005629 if you think the DE is the problem, just install Unity or something
weird andwer it was ? was it ?
i just posted an answer to that
it was, but the question was also rather idiotic
What's your Disk setup ? @Zacharee1
@user3005629 for my phone?
12:08
yeah but what you'd expect from a newcomer on linux? i mean in windows you dont get an output like this "huh? uninstalled packages???"
:D
@Zacharee1 Ok, '/" and Swap is it?
and not everyone is computer savy
Isn't there a Network filesystem ?
I haven't used one yet
ZFS ?
@user3005629 no. it's internal and SD
Android
@Zacharee1 mm ok
@Zacharee1 Despite it being said that in Ubuntu you can use different DE's I have always found problems.
12:22
@zacharee i wonder if it would be possible to set up an android system on a normal laptop (beside the fact you might need to compile everything for that plattform)
There is Android x86
You can setup dual-boot situations, but you need a 32-bit CPU
urgs
i not had a 32 bit cpu since 15 years
Welp
I have an unlocked bootloader now
congratz
Essentially the Verizon Developer Edition
But idk what to do :p
12:30
i guess you already did a full device backup? then go and remove the bloatware
I already have temp root, so I've done that a few times
Right now, I'm going to see if I can install TWRP so I can get permanent root
12:45
This is a long and tricky process
The KingRoot temp root is really unstable
Replacing KingRoot with SuperSU now...
My battery is going to be toast
O_o then keep it on the charger, you really dont want it to shut down in the process
bricking is not nice :p
That's the problem
Charging and discharging at the same time is just blegh
Super-Sume is hanging
sigh
OK. Had to hard reboot
Now to re-root
So I can get SuperSu
Then flash TWRP with Odin
Blegh
Re-Root all the things!! OK I'll stop now....
Oh cool. It crashed itself

@Zacharee1 You'll soon need a snack, The shop called and confirmed you're shipment ETA of a Whale to be cooked after for you.
wat
ERMAGERD
KingRoot, please stop crashing!
If I get this working, I'll be able to install Cyanogen or something over the summer :DD
Charge 300 Mhz, clear!! --> BOOM!
Like paramedics
13:39
yeah, but that's not MHz
Oh ok
Is there another metric that could be confused ?
Why would anyone understand other that Hertz ?
from Mhz
Just asking I appreciate the correction indeed
dunno If that's a correct use of "indeed"
idk what you're saying :P
LOL
Awesome hahaha
Can someone evaluate this duplicate marking ? | askubuntu.com/questions/769329/…
13:44
No, that's a valid dupe
it gives the answer you need
and it's the same desire
And what about the "pragmatical/semantical" thing?
what?
As I suspected...
No biggie I'll just make a blogpost about that "pargmatical/semnatic" concept
14:14
Seems my launcher was an issue
Installing TWRP it seems
flashing
please don't brick
seeing if I can reboot
YES
I have TWRP!!!!
14:45
Flashed SuperSU
uh oh
bootloop
Let's see if reseating the battery helps
Did it start making sandwiches out of control?
what?

Jackie ChilesBasically my username when connecting through SFTP cannot edit any files. How can I change this so that I can edit whatever file I want?

A: Instalé Ubuntu 16.04 en mi laptop Acer Aspire E1-431-2474 y no le funciona el touchscreen

GrahamWelcome to Ask Ubuntu. As this is an English only question website, you need to edit your question to be in English if you wish to receive responses...

wiped cache and fixed permissions

@Videonauth that should be a comment
You said : "Uh oh"
yep :p
@Zacharee1

user139252
14:50
No hablas espanol.
@Zacharee1 i just wonder this user seems to be a regular on the site seeing his rep and badges
@TheBrownOne that's second person
@Videonauth yeah
flashed new TWRP to install SuperSU
let's see if that works
15:46
2.1GB download
sigh
400MB to go
200MB
I really hope this download has what I need
100MB
user139252
@Zacharee1 Further proof of my inability to speak Spanish :P
user139252
I need a comic book illustrator
16:02
you're back
user139252
I have a realllllllly good idea for a super hero, and I've already written out the first story line, but I cannot draw at all :(
user139252
ANIMAL CROSSING IS COMING TO ANDROID, MY LIFE IS COMPLETE!
cool
I need to get my phone working before I go back to school today
I want to try out Cyanogen
Now that I have an unlocked bootloader
I could use 6.0.1 :DD
Middle-finger emoji, here I come :p
Downloading CM
It's an unofficial build for the Verizon Note 4 Dev Edition, but I think the only difference between dev and reatil is the bootloader being locked on reatil
and now it isn't :D
But this download's kind of slow
5Mb/s :/
ooh. 1MB/s
Good thing I made a backup, even if it was with SmartSwitch
16:35
@TheBrownOne my sister used to draw a bit
OK. I actually don't want to try CM
I'm going to get back to stock and then try a Note 5 port
user136984
16:47
@SQuirel It only starts to count the rep you have on other SE sites in chat once you have over 200 rep on them.
user136984
Though obviously it counts the rep of the parent site no matter what it is, otherwise until you reached 201 rep on that site it would say you didn't have any here.
user136984
@Zacharee1: You'll reach 9,999 rep and then nobody will ever upvote you again. ;P
@ParanoidPanda :(
17:14
Well I somehow got a virus on Windows 10
So I'll have to fix that some time
Woah, these plants have pattents?
signs that say "ppaf unauthrized propagation prohibited"
what is the world coming to...
wat
c'mon MTP driver, INSTALL
I need my phone to work
user136984
@Zacharee1: What does the virus do?
17:25
It keeps spawning in processes and recreating folders
it injects ads and prevents Windows Defender from starting
user136984
Oh, well, the first one is rather funny, the ads and AV blocking isn't very nice...
user136984
I actually have a cross-platform virus (well, malware, it doesn't actually spread) on my machine... So when I finally find it again (I lost it), remind me not to run it... :P
user136984
I'm not sure where it is or what I renamed it to... :D
user136984
Buts it's been around for a few years now so...
user136984
Anyway, I would definitely know if I had accidentally run it... There is another more lethal virus somewhere around my machine, but I'm hoping that only did bad stuff on Windows as I haven't found it yet... And no idea what I called it either...
user136984
17:28
I'm hoping that I didn't actually keep it... But I really don't remember! :D
user136984
They're from my days of malware analysis, I just happened to lose two of the viruses I downloaded... :D

Q: wifi driver fails to load firmware on kernel 4.6.0-rc2

MarkDistro - Ubuntu-14.04. For development purposes I built and installed 4.6.0-rc2 kernel. All works well except wifi: % dmesg ... [ 9.092503] Intel(R) Wireless WiFi driver for Linux [ 9.092506] Copyright(c) 2003- 2015 Intel Corporation [ 9.092771] iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: can't disable ASPM...

FINALLY
Odin is letting me flash the stock image
And no @ParanoidPanda, that's the program, not the god
This is gonna take a while
At least it's working and at least I made a backup
@Fabby would be proud :p
failed! :(
user136984
18:17
@Zacharee1: Is there a close vote on this question?
user136984
@Zacharee1: Well, I cast a close vote and then retracted it but it's still in my vote history... So maybe they changed how it works...
idk
Trying again
Thank God
It went through
It's optimizing apps and whatnot
Then I just need to run Smart Switch
and then I think I'll install TWRP, but leave it there until SuperSu is fixed
Although...
If I do the root before anything's installed maybe it'll work better
We'll see I guess
Hey, my data's all still here
user136984
19:04
Yeah... These were the good times (except for the roboduck accusations I just noticed further up the page :D)! :)
is there a complete dark theme for unity? and if how to obtain it?
o/ ByteCommander
19:35
@Videonauth Hey! :)
how are you today ?
Fine, wonderful weather outside! Just had a BBQ.
cool here t summer comes as well slowly
did you try to do apt-get clean and removing openjdk-8 before installing 9 ?
No, I did not. But those should be able to coexist.
Also, it's colliding with a file from openjdk-9-jdk-headless and nothing related to openjdk-8
well try an apt-get clean maybe this will be enough to redownload the cached package
19:43
It's not a caching problem, but the package is not correctly created by the maintainers.
gimme a minute ill look into this
theres surely a way around, at least this is linux not windows :)
will dake a moment to download this
@Videonauth I think I found a way. Have anything installed already?
If not, could you test my set of commands on a virgin machine?
well im just running apt-get install openjdk-9 and my macine is upgraded and heavily customized already
Well, you could try these commands in that order anyway:
but tell me what you want to test and ill see if i get the test done
19:57
sudo apt install openjdk-9-jdk
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo dpkg -i --force-overwrite /var/cache/apt/archives/openjdk-9-jdk_9~b114-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb
I'm not sure about the order of dpkg configure and dpkg install though. I originally ran install, which caused an error, then I configured and installed again which succeeded. So I think it should be fine to first configure and then install, but maybe the install attempt is needed twice?
