@Mateo I cannot believe all the backlash that people are giving Ubuntu, especially when Ubuntu has flat out said that the upgrade candidate will go active in about 3 months time. 14.04 had bugs when it was first released as well. I think that people have become so comfortable with 14.04's stability, that they have expected 16.04 to be the same in the starting gates.
@Terrance you have to let it happen. People like to complain (I'm no exception :P)
@Zacharee1 Nah... I'm not the jealous type...
Mr. LateReplies is back!
:)
@Zacharee1 I was busy with getting stuff sorted for my new job, then laying a floor I promised to lay about 3 months ago and before I start with the new job, and then finishing my install of xenial...
@Zacharee1 You have a good point there. :)
16:11
@Zacharee1 I always reply. (unless it's just a smiley)
@Mateo Hint: don't reset your Ubuntu phone to default factory settings without taking the SIM cards out or it'll wipe all of your contacts from the SIM!
@Fabby But that's what I want
Why does that happen?
@Fabby that.. would seem to be a bug?
o/ @Fabby
\o @Mahesh
@Seth Yeah, I'll file one after I get Xenial fully up and running: still configuring stuff...
16:14
Are there any good power saving apps for Ubuntu?
did you ever get a chance to look into that label issue in UTT?
o/ @Seth
It's a battery killer
@Videonauth Don't ping "Hello" or /o, please?
Pretty, pretty, pretty please?
Anybody wants to critique my old C project ?
maybe @kos ^
16:15
no proplem mate
@Zacharee1 There is an Intel proc pstate indicator...
Umm, sorry.. I'm on a shitty mac and can't run a ubuntu VM here. I'll get back my linux box on 4th, all work on UTT is waiting for it.
@Mahesh "shitty Mac" is redundant
user139252
@Fabby People still store contacts in the SIM?
16:16
:P
@Mahesh oh cool. Does that mean you'll be going back to major dev? Or just the small stuff? :)
@TheBrownOne yes
user139252
Old school.
who lies?
16:17
I'd like to help (you probably know this). Once I get my life (back) in order.
user139252
@Seth You mean it once was in order?
also: rotfl

@hbdgaf --^
@TheBrownOne I like to think it was..
Might take a break from corporate life, so I'll have time to fixmost bugs in UTT.
@TheBrownOne As a back-up? Yes!
@jokerdino o/
16:18
@Mahesh That's great!
Atleast that's what I plan to do.
user139252
@Fabby My back-up contacts list is an Alice Through the Looking Glass address book :P
@TheBrownOne (that way, I can just ask anyone's phone to use, insert my SIM, and presto: I can call my mum even when I've dropped my phone in the Champagne bucket...) ;-)
@Serg looks pretty clean so far i can see
@TheBrownOne I don't get it... :/
user139252
16:20
An address book, that you write names and phone numbers and other contact information in
You have a back-up SIM hidden in a book?
user139252
With a pen or pencil
Ah! :D
user139252
It has pictures from the book on the covers and quotes on each page :P
Aaah! NOW I get it!
@TheBrownOne (and a tiny bit obscure reference to make me not understand, right?)
user139252
16:22
Everybody knows Alice Through the Looking Glass
user139252
Lewis Carroll, we're all a bit mad here?
@TheBrownOne I've never seen a notebook with an Alice theme...
@Mahesh o/
@Fabby backup SIM hidden in rubix cube ;)
@TheBrownOne who what?
16:23
@Seth :D :D :D
@TheBrownOne I heard it was a lousy sequel. Never read it.
@Seth I'm a Project Manager and a security buff!
:P
:P
(but then I've been a Data Centre Manager and have had to take care of both physical and logical security)
(and have had my very first FTP server taken over and it was serving as a Pr0n server.)
(unfortunately not the kind of pr0n that I'm interested in) >:-) ;-)
lo fabby :p
16:29
You learn by making mistakes....
I always make mistakes by learning :)
@Videonauth This was very early on in the Internet days and it was only taken over for a week-end.
@JacobVlijm I make mistakes when learning, but not by learning! :P
Yeah, you are right, but that didn't sound so funny
:D
@Fabby so how did your query about this contract turn out ?
16:35
I signed.
I'm flying into London for the onboarding on Monday.
where you moving to then?
Walldorf, Germany
(apparently that's where SAP's HQ is)
ah.
Nicenice
OK, I need to log off and log on as admin to install a tar.gz
CU all L8R...
16:37
CU!
On linux I just su to the proper user. If it's a different distro it needs a chroot followed by su. Never logged out and logged in.
that ^
but maybe this is at work.
16:52
I aswell have on my machine an admin account and a normal user without sudo rights, this way im not installing everything i come across and cant mess something up that easy
It's a good idea to use a non-sudo user for daily use, but still you don't really need to interrupt your work to switch to a sudoer/root temporarily
@Seth hilarious
anyone know whrer i can find the setting for the font size in the graphical tty ?
what is a graphical tty?
when youre logging in and swithch to tty
17:04
tty and graphical feels very oxymoronic
the font is so tiny that you need a magnifying lens for to read it
you need to increase size in tty?
30
Q: How do I change the font or the font size in the TTY (console)?

Aaron HillI am using Ubuntu 12.04. Recently, the font size for all of my TTYs became much larger. How can I change the font size back to the default?

17:21
@Videonauth sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-setup
i tried that, now when i boot up the font size is gigantic, and when im going into tty from logged in state like now it is still tiny as hell
17:56
Good evening everyone!
Good evening , mr Wolf
Hey Mr... Red-shirt-and-glasses?
Accurate . . .
And a pair of eyes and ears and common human facial appendages in approximately their appropriate positions..
I know right ? Isn't that amazing ?
Meanwhile , I'm cleaning up a few things here and there on my git
Spearfishing ?
@mods ^
erm whats the gtk version used in unity 7.4 (16.04 lts) ??
or how can i find out ?
Wow, 1500
I am not going to touch that link.
18:18
Nice Mateo.
;)
18:54
Can we please delete this? It's not useful and ethically inappropriate: askubuntu.com/a/765077/367990
@Serg Also could any Moderator please delete this chat message so that nobody will click the download link inside the oneboxed question by accident?
We're definitely talking about a script downloading and executing Linux malware...
(@jokerdino could you clean those two things up, please ^ ?)
Okay, Seth deleted the answer already.
ethically?
wrong vocab?
happens occasionally with words I normally never have to use...
I mean, isn't it offending against Muslims?
How would you call that instead?
hmm
ethically is basically a synonym of morally. Which is close to what you want (I suppose), but different. I can't think if a good replacement atm, but just plain "inappropriate" will do.
it's not a big deal, I was just confused.
Well, maybe. Although it's pretty good already (at least I'm conceited enough to think that), English is not my native language... ;)
@ByteCommander two?
19:05
Both gone.
An inappropriate answer and Serg's post which showed the oneboxed question preview containing the download link for that malware script.
Righto.
@ByteCommander yes, your English is very good.
Just call it offensive. Ethically is not appropriate there.
Just from an English pov, 'ethically inappropriate' feels a little awkward. We would likely just say 'unethical'. Sometimes when people want to stress it a little by lengthening it, they might say 'of questionable ethics.'
just talking about the word 'ethical'. Inappropriate or offensive as seth and jokerdino say is better here.
It has nothing to do with ethical there though.
19:08
agreed, which I added to my msg
Yep.
Can we ban VLQ flags? I hate them.
me too.
I love them. They're my favourite review queue out of all!
pretty sure it's been discussed on meta before..
@ByteCommander not the queue, the flag.
So you mean merge it with NAA?
(BRB)
19:12
@ByteCommander no. The VLQ flag has no useful purpose at all.. Just get rid of it.
Won't effect the queue much, other then not putting in as many things that shouldn't be there.
VLQ ?? enlighten me please
Very low quality flag.
When a person deems an answer is not of adequate quality.
@Seth I don't understand why it's there. Nothing seems to apply to it that doesn't already apply to something else
19:15
You might as well delete. When I used it a couple of times early on, I was told by a mod to knock it off, saying if it's not NAA, then you should improve it rather than flag it.
It's kind of funny, but Chrome Dev on Android works much better than normal Chrome
(back)
@Seth And what to flag dumb posts like "chicken chicken chicken chicken chicken..." for if not VLQ?
@ByteCommander flag for excessive use of chicken. We need more beef
@Serg any idea which vte is meant there ? askubuntu.com/a/765099/522934 i cant for my life not find the right package it is in
@Videonauth VTE ?
19:27
@ByteCommander is that an answer?
yeah virtual terminal emulator but what the hell in shch package is it libvte i already installed
@Zacharee1 exactly.
as in Disabled plugins: terminal (vte not found)
@Seth Not a currently existing one, but that stuff has been around here already. Mostly it's not a chicken but a genital part though which the again justifies the use of a rude-flag.
@Videonauth I see what you mean, but have no clue. libvte-2.90-9 on my 14.04 is referred to as terminal emulator in Gtk3
libvte0.16-cil - CLI binding for VTE 0.16
Maybe that ?
19:31
@serg let me try
$ apt-cache policy libvte0.16-cil
libvte0.16-cil:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 2.26.0-8
  Version table:
     2.26.0-8 0
        500 archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu trusty/universe amd64 Packages
Virtual Terminal Emulator
(that's my guess what it could mean... I have no idea as well ;D)
@ByteCommander yeah, we get that, that's the easy part
:D
SO what's the hard part?
my finger on the Shift key is a bit slow today... :/
michael@NEXUS-TWO:~/build/gedit-plugins-3.10.1$ apt-cache policy libvte0.16-cil
N: Unable to locate package libvte0.16-cil
N: Couldn't find any package by glob 'libvte0.16-cil'
N: Couldn't find any package by regex 'libvte0.16-cil'
@ByteCommander i answered to a guys post and even reproduced his steps but i cant get the ./configure to add in the terminal plugin for gedit
0
A: Install `gedit-plugin` for a downgraded version of gedit

VideonauthThe following command you should have done already as you folowwed the tutorial how to downgrade to lower version of gedit (if not do it aswell): sudo apt-get build-dep gedit Then run the following: sudo apt-get build-dep gedit-plugins sudo apt-get install libvte* Then i assume you used /us...

19:37
@Videonauth So what exactly are you looking for?
For the missing lib or package to get it made completely with terminal enabled
i nstalled all libvte already, means the ones for gtk 2 and 3
OK, that's it !!! this keyboard has ctrl and home pgup key waaay too far apart form each other
Ah, much better, bound ctrl+[ and Ctrl+] to page up and down
@Videonauth Try this command and see if you have them all:
$ apt-cache depends --recurse gedit-plugins | grep "Depends: libvte" | sort -u
  Depends: libvte-2.90-9
  Depends: libvte-2.90-common
  Depends: libvte-2.91-0
  Depends: libvte-2.91-0:i386
  Depends: libvte-2.91-common
  Depends: libvte9
  Depends: libvte9:i386
  Depends: libvte-common
lol, you need help to answer someone else's question.
@Serg regarding to your post in that honeypot thingy ulimit is existant command , see here
19:43
@jokerdino Doesn't that happen to all of us once in a while?
@jokerdino the most of that answer is done i just want to improve it
@Videonauth Simply run help ulimit.
@Videonauth yeah, I already figured that out. It's a shell builtin. I was looking at man 2 ulimit though
help is the command for shell builtin help.
Depends: libvte-2.91-0
Depends: libvte-2.91-0:i386
Depends: libvte-2.91-common
Depends: libvte9
Depends: libvte9:i386
Depends: libvte-common
19:45
And all of those are installed?
@ByteCommander I can lol at all of us then.
i think at least
@Videonauth Righto
Hrm...
If you launch gedit from the terminal and the try to enable that plugin in the GUI, do you get any informative error output in the console?
19:47
erm i have to build it first ?
configure disables the make of that plugin
Yeah, just load the part of gedit that is already built and functional.
I'm hoping that it still has the option available and throws an informative error when you select it and the missing library can't be located.
i have no clue why this guy wants to run a downgraded version of gedit tbh
Because Xenial's Gedit is ugly!?
Probably because of the panel
Xenial's Gedit is very . . . minimalistic
well im not using gedit
if i need editor in gui im using scite and in terminal im running nano
19:49
It is. I preferred the old design.
I don't use gedit so i don't care
VIM is my weapon of choice so far
funny there is no way to enable plugins in the new minimalistic gedit
There is a way, OP probably didn't find it yet
in my answer i got all other plugins to be build :)
just not terminal
and since im kinda a perfectionist im still searching how to even get that going on 16.04
@Videonauth You enable plugins through edit→preferences→plugins...
20:03
i have no menu bar in gedit ?
only those minimalistic buttons
@Videonauth DO you have the gir1.2-vte-2.91 (and similar) packages installed?
@Videonauth Menu bar is in the title bar as usually in Unity. Or in the panel.
gir1.2-vte-2.91:
Installed: 0.42.5-1ubuntu1
Candidate: 0.42.5-1ubuntu1
Version table:
*** 0.42.5-1ubuntu1 500
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
i know but there is ... nothing
@ByteCommander my point being "chicken" is not an answer. Use NAA.
true...
@Videonauth No more ideas... :/
checking whether Python support is requested... checking for DBUSPYTHON... yes
checking for vte_terminal_new in -lvte2_90... no
configure: WARNING: vte could not be found, terminal plugin will be disabled
seems it searches for a special command inside that lib ?
20:11
@Videonauth Can I see that script file please?
you mean the makefile ?
Whatever script is outputting that.
ok, Evince is just weird
i can type into the field of a pdf document, but cannot save the changes
@Serg I forget the details, but that's a licensing issue with pdf
20:20
It's a PDF form?
yeah
There are no free apps that can fill out pdf forms (properly that is, there may be ways to force text into the box if that's all you need)
@Videonauth Sorry, too complicated for me... :/ The VTE check starts at line 15790, but it's hard to understand what happens...
@Serg I know that you can edit PDFs with LibreOffice.
@ByteCommander yeah, but that mangles the form
But not sure if it can fill out form fields. It can edit text blocks though...
20:30
it's ok, i'll have to figure something out
If you figure it out, let us know, but the code needed to handle forms properly is non-free (in both senses) from Adobe, so neither evince nor okular support it.
@ByteCommander it is trying to build a basic c programm against this function in libvte and decides it is not able to
no idea... I'm out I guess.
@onebree Looks great!
@terdon Are you still there? You remember what you wanted to do with my question on U&L? unix.stackexchange.com/q/279278/103151
20:57
Ubuntu on top of Windows in a VM works surprisingly well
I was expecting Windows to suck too many resources for it to work
What hypervisor?
Uh...whatever is default
It has a default?
HyperV?
Whatever VirtualBox uses as default
That is VirtualBox. :P
20:59
Ah
Well then, that :D
Because HyperV sucks. VirtualBox is pretty ok IIRC.
Well, enough for today. Night!
test
icle
:-)
@ByteCommander Gute Nacht!
@onebree It works without JavaScript and cookies: +100
It needs two times: working time and total time to allow all data from my recipes.
It needs an "origin" field: Where does this recipe come from? (country/state/region, ...)
"Calories" should be "KCalories" (common mistake) and a drop-down field:
<100KCal/serving
100-500kCal
500-1000
1000-2000
"Heart attack"
21:14
@Fabby it may be the wrong measurement, but here in the US, most people don't even know that it's KCal
Yeah, but still: it's scientifically wrong
Chromium is thoroughly brokeded under VirtualBox & Atom (chromium-based) is a bit borky
user139252
@Fabby You're scientifically wrong.

Q: Update issues 16.05 - Failed to download repository information

Dan LeeI keep getting the old message that I experienced from previous upgrades of yonder. Changing the server and refreshing doesn't seem to work any more. W:There is no public key available for the following key IDs: 1397BC53640DB551, W:Failed to fetch htt p://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/...

21:17
@onebree: forget about the "Origin": the "source field can be used for that, just moe it up a bit.
i ask me really where do all the weird versions of ubuntu come from
@Fabby But using KCal is more likely to cause confusion than Cal
For the rest: Looks great! Mum is going to be happy!
Ugh
I'm in Windows 10 right now
user139252
A typical American might take the "K" to mean "Kilo" and think they're taking in 1000 times as many :P
21:18
@Zacharee1 I said "KCalories" (and @onebree can make it a clickable link and educate the entire world about it)
Because it's the only OS where sound actually work right
(Or just ignore my ramblings)
@Fabby lol
@TheBrownOne exactly
@TheBrownOne They ARE!
Americans don't want to learn new things, even if those things are right. We want stuff to say the same (just take a look at our govt :P)
21:19
That's why is someone asks me how many Calories my chocolate mouse is, I say: About 1.5 million Calories. @TheBrownOne
user139252
@Fabby But this
user139252
1 Calorie = 1000 calories
user139252
Because apparently capitalization matters in this respect
When they lauch, I tell them I'm not joking and that one serving is about 1500Kcal, this 1.5 Mcal
@TheBrownOne Woohoo!
@Fabby Mcal*
21:21
I didn't know that one (but then I've never written it before: only told people)
@Zacharee1 Huh? >:-)
And how much chocolate milk do you drink?
user139252
Anyways, I'm gonna go.. not feeling great today. Bye!
@Fabby Cal vs. cal
@TheBrownOne Oops! Take care of yourself or have someone do that for you!
Chocolate milk? Per year?
2L? Max!
No, in one sitting
21:22
One cup.
I've never seen one serving be 1500Cal
I was talking about my recipe for Chocolate mousse
ohhh
why did I think milk?
I've only ever seen one person ever taking 3 servings.
4500Cal?!
21:24
@Zacharee1 Because I gave @Serg my recipe for chocolate milk a few weeks ago?
@Zacharee1 Yup!
no
ugh
4500Cal and not even the food?
That's nothing compared to my recipe for chocolate cake!
uh oh
21:25
I call that one "Death by chocolate"!
Did you give Panda the cake?
>:-)
He never asked: he just eats, he doesn't do any baking by himself... ;-)
I've been making it for so long and no one ever asked for the recipe, that I can't even copy-paste it in here!
21:27
Anyway, shutting down for today...
@Zacharee1 The recipe for my chocolate cake to give to to Panda???
What kind of food do you like?
Indian is good
and Mexican
Real Indian and Mexican
Japanese Curry?
Not sure
o_O
A little disturbing
And I don't think I've ever tried it
Nah! Kids love it!
Anyway: good night...
shutdown -h now!
