I was surprised that no one had answered this one yet: askubuntu.com/questions/760796/…
well i have no clue how to do something bout that , and aswell i not use google chrome
Well, the issue was OP didn't know apt-get didn't provide info after update and that it had to be followed by upgrade. It wasn't really about the chrome issue. I was just surprised that after 2000 views it was still unanswered. :)
i whish i could have a peek into byte commanders AU repository
@Videonauth there's just one file so far , the one he linked
ah ok i thought he did already more scripts
04:10
Take a peak into mine
ha nice, sniffing through right now :) better as newspapers :)
a morning coffee, a cigarett, and a good script to read
best breakfast ever :p
@Videonauth enjoy :) I've quite a few things there , bash, awk, python, java
@serg i surely will, btw what do you think how much hdd spac do i need to make a ubuntu tryout install on my working machine ? need to free some space for it on hdd but not want to shoot my windows yet just in case windows doesnt play so nice
04:28
@Videonauth install virtualbox , make Ubuntu VM with 16 GB of virtual size . . . even 8 will do. I've 8 GB SSD and I've put Ubuntu there at first, then OpenSuse
Virtual Box is cool because you can have bunch of virtual machines, without installing to HDD directly
well vm runs but refused to install from 16.04 image i had to install 15.10 and upgrade
Huh, interesting. I've installed 16.04 without any issues. Yesterday installed CentOS overnight
yeah i got some distored graphics
but my work machine is not the newest
Asus ROG Formula II Board wit Intel core2quad Q9550
8 GB ram
nvidia gtx 760 ti wf2oc 4 GB
nvidia gt 610 512 MB (PCI)
Don't mind me . . . I need to take a second to break down and cry . . . <hysterics>EVERYTHING IS BROKEN AND MY DIJKSTRA ISN:T DONE YET </hysterics>
but theres a rule never touch a running system so i want to make sure before i make a fresh dualboot install where i use windows only for gaming that ubuntu has drivers for all odds and ends
user139252
04:34
@Serg how can I help?
@TheBrownOne maybe send him some tranquilizers ?
well . . . I don't even know . . .
user139252
Not sure that would help....
user139252
Somebody should buy me a Nexus 6 :p
@TheBrownOne do you have an amazon wishlist ?
user139252
04:36
Not at the moment, no. Why?
user139252
I actually just cancelled my prime membership, too.
Well, if you want someone to buy it for you , create a wish-list and if one day a person decides to give you a gift, point them there
user139252
Ah :p
My wishlist is basically tons of stuff . . .not really a wish list . . . just a list . . .
hehehe im graving actually for this book, its top of my whishlist amazon.de/C-Primer-Plus-Developers-Library/dp/0321776402
04:48
good one, though i bet you can find pdf online for free
possibly yes but i want it on paper :)
valid point
I actually want a PyQt book on paper :p
its not that it will teach me much new but its a good book to have as backup to reread some things
i have even the bible of iso streams (The c++ ISostreams handbook) in my collection
this book is somewhat old but still valid

The Master was explaining the nature of Tao to one of his novices.

"The Tao is embodied in all software -- regardless of how insignificant," said the Master.

"Is the Tao in a hand-held calculator?" asked the novice.

"It is," came the reply.

"Is the Tao in a video game?" asked the novice.

"It is even in a video game," said the Master.

"Is the Tao in the DOS for a personal computer?" asked the novice.

The Master coughed and shifted his position slightly. "The lesson is over for today," he said.

Q: Shrink Raspberry Pi SD .img via Ubuntu Server (cli)

Jesse JacksonI installed Raspbian to a 16 GB card and expanded the filesystem. When I made a dd backup of the card, the .img file output was ~16 GB. Most of it is unused space in the ext4 partition—I'm only using like 2.5 GB in that partition. (There are two partitions—the first is FAT for boot and the second...

Can VMbuilder create a 16.04 image?
I need to build a 16.04 qcow2 image. I could really use some help on this
@terdon No GUI, cli. And no errors :/
it's just of a few entries of Apr 24, and then the logs go to the 25, today...
@blade19899 OK, so what exactly crashed? Unresponsive system? Any screen artefacts?
First thought, as always, is a heating issue.
@terdon Could not log in via ssh, and could not go to the server via browser!
@blade19899 Oh, so it's a remote server. OK. And now, after a hard restart everything is OK?
Why don't you post a question on U&L?
09:39
@terdon Already restarted, WAS examining the logs, but found no usable entries!
@blade19899 Well, thermal events should be logged if that was the problem. You'll need to go through the various log files and see what happened around the time of the crash. I think the one that looks at heat issues is something like /var/log/*acpi* but I don't remember. Ask on U&L.

Great, the Labor Day (the non-USA version) is on a Sunday this year.

@kos You think that's bad? In Greece this year, Easter Sunday and labor day are on the same day!
The only good thing about religion is the holidays and now they've gone and eaten a perfectly good secular one!
kos

@terdon Well, still one day less of holidays overall. But I see the point :)
@oli i had already deleted my answer so i dont think this guy will see your reply on my answer. he even opened up a second question already i marked the new one as a dupe of his first one here the second one askubuntu.com/questions/762350/…
@kos Now, if we could only convince Christians to move Easter to a weekday, we'd be set...

@terdon Yeah. And also convincing everyone to postpone Labor Days occuring on Sundays would be just good times
Much better idea: Labor Day should be transformed to Labor Week. All issues gone, all happy.

@cl-netbox: I get the same output with no errors unless there is a new package version to upgrade to so... So you will need to run it when there is an upgrade available which your machine doesn't know about yet to be sure that you don't get it.
Did it this morning -> Upgraded the following packages:
distro-info-data (0.28) to 0.28ubuntu0.1
libllvm3.8 (1:3.8-2ubuntu1) to 1:3.8-2ubuntu3 ... no error ...
user136984
16:17
@cl-netbox: But did you run sudo apt update or sudo apt-get update?
user136984
Because maybe the former just doesn't output the error... The fact that you are getting it when running that other command I gave you suggests that you do have the error, partly at least.
@ParanoidPanda I usually use apt-get update ... and as I said before : I never had this error ... :)
user136984
@cl-netbox: And you did this morning? And do you know for sure that gnome-software hadn't already run it or something?
@ParanoidPanda I don't use GNOME software ... :)
user136984
@cl-netbox: Yes, but it is always running the the background and checking for updates from time to time... Isn't it?
user136984
16:20
Well it is on my VMs anyway...
user136984
Anyway, this is all most strange... At least we know that you do get the error when running the other command I gave you...
@ParanoidPanda not in my case ... when I start the PC the first thing I do is checking for updates ... :)
user136984
@cl-netbox: Then this is all most strange...
@ParanoidPanda yes it is ! :)
user136984
@ByteCommander: Do you have a Slack account? :)
user136984
16:22
Because they are discussing this issue there...
user136984
@Tim: Have the released a fix for that bug yet then? :)
@ParanoidPanda check your stuff...
16:38
@ParanoidPanda @ByteCommander : I deleted the answer because it didn't solve your problem ... but as I said : I never ever experienced this issue in nine years ... maybe this can help -> wiki.debian.org/AppStream/Guidelines ... :)
@ParanoidPanda I think yes... Have me a link?
@cl-netbox You are just experiencing it, according to the output above.
user136984
@ByteCommander: Well, there was some talk here, but as I understand it in one of the more general channels too.
@ByteCommander no I don't when I execute sudo apt update or sudo apt-get update ! :)
This is beyond frustrating
@cl-netbox sudo rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists ; sudo apt-get update
16:42
@Serg and I thought I helped you reducing frustration ... :(
@ParanoidPanda No, only have one for a different team...
@cl-netbox sure helps, but . . . i have a grade on the line here
user136984
@ByteCommander: Well, I can invite you if you can give me an email of yours. If you want that is. :)
@ByteCommander I don't understand why I should execute sudo rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists when I can run update without any issue ???
@ParanoidPanda [my username as single word]@gmx.de
user136984
16:44
@cl-netbox: Because perhaps due to bad timing or something else you are just not running it at the right time... If you run what Byte says and you still don't get the issue then we can probably safely say that you only get something similar minimally. :)
@cl-netbox Because you need a changed list to run into the AppStream warning through apt-get update. And by removing the lists and forcing them to fully re-download, they surely change. No worries, it's 100% safe.

@ByteCommander @ParanoidPanda okay I'm gonna do it ... please stay tuned ... :)
user136984

Well actually, as soon as upstream knew about it they fixed it basically... It's because nobody at first reported it to upstream that it was so slow with the fixing.
user136984
@ByteCommander: Ok, I've sent you an invite to Slack! ;)
@Serg and who helps me out of my one ? :D
Not there yet... Seems slow today.
@ByteCommander @ParanoidPanda okay now I have the error ... but what was it good for ? also when I run update again, now I get this :

user136984
16:52
@cl-netbox: Well that's strange... A different yet odd error to get... Probably another app is running it at the same time or something...
@ParanoidPanda I do it again ... remove ... then update
user136984
Yes, I think that a good idea, maybe you wait a few minutes though because gnome-software takes a while.
user136984
You might also want to turn automatic updates off (security auto updates are on by default) just so that you don't get any more bad timing... :D
@ParanoidPanda I never turn on automatic ... I have set it to inform about new updates :)
user139252
anyone know how to remove the default links in the sidebar of Nautilus?
user139252
16:56
I don't need my Videos or Music folders bookmarked there
@TheBrownOne It should be in gsettings ... check dconf-editor ... :)
@ByteCommander @ParanoidPanda : now the error is gone ... but I still do not understand why I shall force the error by removing the lists when I have no problem ?
@TheBrownOne ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs
remove the corresponding entries
Tim
Tim
why slack?
make a backup before
user136984
@cl-netbox: You are just bring on the circumstances which you have accidentally been missing every time you run it, you are not in fact causing yourself to have the error as you are not causing a problem, you are just bringing on the circumstances which come every day but you happen to miss. :)
user136984
17:03
Though seemingly even though you do get the error when running that other code, you don't get the error when we do... Which is most strange...
user139252
@Videonauth Thanks, couldn't find it in dconf :P
It's not in dconf. It's prob hard-coded build the default links based on the user-dirs

@ParanoidPanda : cl@cl-UW-1:~$ apt-cache policy qtox N: Unable to locate package qtox

@cl-netbox: :(
@ParanoidPanda yes :(
All the answers to my programming question is on stackoverflow.
user136984
It is really unacceptable for it to take so long... Most have it ready even before the version is released... Most have a section for in-development versions anyway... Not just released ones...
@ParanoidPanda yes ... so true ... :)
@ParanoidPanda Pandamonium? :D
Yes, got it. I was away...
$ cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/tox.list
deb https://pkg.tox.chat/debian nightly xenial
But no install candidate yet, I'm still running the old version I got when I was at Wily.
17:22
@Seth check this out:
The link now takes you direct to "My Apps"
and works on mobile sizes now!
Have to go now ... see you tomorrow ... bye :)
@TheBrownOne Ok, I got it. I looked at the source and was right that it's hard-coded to build bookmark list from user-dirs. Commenting out the dirs in user-dirs doesn't work since the file is re-written from /etc/xdg/user-dirs.defaults on login. Soloution is to comment out the dirs in both files and the unwanted bookmarks go away.
logout and login of course
user139252
Ahhhh, alrighty.
user139252
Thank you :D
user139252

I can post a question and you can answer, so that you get rep.
great, thanks.

Q: How to remove unwanted default bookmarks in Nautilus?

The Brown OneNautilus has some bookmarks in the left-hand bar by default. I do not store any music or videos on my computer, and would like those book marks to disappear. How can I make this happen?

anyone have an opinion on the pyqt vs pyqside comeback thing?
user136984
@ByteCommander Yep! That's me! ;D
17:37
@ParanoidPanda the command for doing so
@ParanoidPanda And what's that thing about the hungry cooks? o.O
:(){ : | :& );:
erm meant @Zacharee1
@TheBrownOne Well, it looks like a dupe but with a slightly different solution (making the .config file read only). Please accept anyway, even if it gets closed. Ack, one thing I just thought of is that this is fine on a personal computer but it will fprevent new users from having those dirs automatically.
user139252
17:39
Yeah, I'm waiting till it lets me accept.
user139252
3 minutes :P
thanks!
user136984
@ByteCommander That's my public forwarding address... :D
user136984
It forwards emails sent to it to my primary email address.
so i wasnt that wrong at all
^
17:42
@Videonauth wat
see the commmand i typed, thats the solution to install games voa terminal :p
user136984
@chaskes: When I change the Anthy typing method from Romaji to Kana is where does everything go? I mean, is there a keyboard layout somewhere that would show me where all the characters are? :)
especially for assasins creed
user136984
@cl-netbox: If they take too much longer why don't you just compile qTox from source?
user136984
Or even I can just package it up for you into a deb file... :)
user136984
17:48
Well, I probably could anyway...
user136984
Please VTC this as no longer able to reproduce.
@ParanoidPanda as you whish
user136984
@Videonauth: Well, you don't have VTC powers yet so you can't... But can flag it I guess.
this i did
Does anyone else experience this 16.04 Nautilus bug? When you select a line (list view) and then give another window the focus, the line stays orange highlighted as if Nautilus was still focused. But as soon as you hover your mouse over the line, it becomes grey as it should when Nautilus is not focused. (@ParanoidPanda)
user139252
18:03
Let me try
user139252
Yep, just saw that.
@ByteCommander on my machine it switches directly to grey when the window looses focus
user139252
And then it stays grey until you hover over it again when Nautilus comes back into focus
user136984
@NathanOsman: Just had a look at your profile page, why don't you add your chat script to your about section? People would be interested in that and it is relevant here I think... :)
user136984
Also, I hope to soon overtake you in terms of rep! >;P
user136984
18:05
@ByteCommander: I will just check...
user136984
@ByteCommander: What version of Nautilus are you running?
@TheBrownOne Yes, exactly.
@ParanoidPanda nautilus: Installed: 1:3.18.4.is.3.14.3-0ubuntu4
@ParanoidPanda Me? Dream on! >:D ;)
user136984
@ByteCommander: No, I was talking to Nathan. :P
user136984
It would be nice to overtake you too though. >:D
Wut, he has only 16.8k? He's all-time user number 5, I would have expected a bit more effort... :P
user139252
18:15
Also, the 16.04 terminal doesn't have an option for New Tab
user139252
just New Terminal
@TheBrownOne 16.04 terminal new tab is ctrl+shift+t
user139252
Yes, but I like accessing it from the menu :P
user136984
@ByteCommander: Do you notice anything at all odd in Terminal when highlighting text or executing commands? Because sometimes either it is blank for output when it shouldn't be and then only shows when I do something special or the highlighting doesn't highlight everything or at least it doesn't show you that it does...
@TheBrownOne In Edit→Preferences you can select whether to open new terminals in a new window or tab.
@ParanoidPanda Nope, terminal is one of the few things on 16.04 that haven't failed in anything yet for me...
user136984
18:25
@ByteCommander: Maybe you're just lucky with that then... :P
user136984
So do you recommend that I upgrade to 16.04 soon or wait on 15.10 for a while? :D
user136984
I think I'm going to stick with 15.10 for a while... Maybe until it goes EOL even because 16.04 sounds awfully buggy... And my 16.04 VMs aren't doing too great... :D
user136984
Aren't LTS releases meant to be the most stable of releases? :D
Yes, I would wait if I was you...
On the other side, you're a great bug reporter! ;D
user136984
So I think then it would turn out better for us all if I stick to 15.10 and stick to finding bugs in my 16.04 VMs... :D
18:29
Good idea!
user136984
Well, at least the not upgrading part would be better for me... :P
user139252
Whoa, neat. I can use my SSH tunnel to access my home network shares by IP
Also, has anybody had issues with the latest kernel?
not on my side
Mine did not boot, I'm running the previous 4.4.0-21 currently.
18:35
if you mean the actual delivered from ubuntu
Yeah, I have no external kernels.
The other must be 4.2.0.35
well im aswell at 4.4.0-21
weird
Or GRUB is confusing my Ubuntu and Arch kernels somehow...
back later...

Q: How can I share an internal disk via NFS? (What am I doing wrong?)

ElijahI have an NFS server (machine A) that mounts a 4TB internal hard drive at /data/Storage, and exports /data to client (Machine B). If I put a regular file in MachineA:/data, you can see it in MachineB:/space/MachineA But if you navigate to MachineB:/space/MachineA/Storage the folder appears empty...
