Jorge just put this question from Jeff Atwood on twitter looking for someone to help: askubuntu.com/questions/761031/…
"
I faced the same issue but now every thing works fine.

The main issue is with gdm not the nvidia driver so just install lightdm & make it the default dm then install the nvidia driver.
"

Might be a thanks. Might be a "bug wasn't the driver" separate answer.
apt-get nuke-from-orbit 127.0.0.1
@hbdgaf I interpreted it as the second one
because it proposes a solution
and isn't just "Thanks"
@hbdgaf well, I think that could be an answer, but like my comment says, there's no one issue to have there
It's a solution, but we don't know what for
00:02
I read it as a separate answer
"just install lightdm & make it the default dm then install the nvidia driver. " <-- that could be an answer
@chaskes Same
I think they had an issue with login loops, but idk
@hbdgaf So I think there's only been the one true "Thanks!" without anything else added here
@ThomasW. fair enough
Yay, I can accept my answer now!
00:03
@chaskes That's a tough one.
maybe he could install 16.04 then boot live 14.04. chroot. and update-grub
Sup?
@hbdgaf Yeah but despite what he said, I'm not sure he's getting the bootloader to /dev/sdc, although I haven't read super closely.

Q: How to configure Bluetooth Tethering (Smartphone/Laptot) to autostart automatically when I turn on the computer?

josI would like to know the way I turn on my computer and it active automatically my Bluetooth Tethering connection (my Internet connection). Now every time I turn on I have to do it manually. Do I have to modify my Bluetooth configuration or my network configuration? My knowledge on this subject ar...

But do you want it automatic?
00:06
@hbdgaf hows life treating you?
I'm having one of those "the idea seemed simple on paper" moments.
@Zacharee1 why not green?
@TheXed well enough
because
Congratulations!

This was only a test, designed to make sure you were paying attention. You passed. This post has already been removed, but thanks for considering leaving feedback for its author.
lol 4 tests in a row
00:06
noice
@NathanOsman does it involve my store link? :-P
You must have done something O_o
@hbdgaf good to hear.
@TheXed I don't want to install any packages until my APT cache script is up and running.
and what does the script do @NathanOsman?
00:07
@hbdgaf I just noticed that Braiam is working with him, so my two cents aren't needed.
@TheXed starts the Armageddon
@TheXed It acts as an HTTP proxy, caching packages.
@Zacharee1 Shhhhhh!
@chaskes Yep. He has been notably absent from chat for a LONG time.
So it caches packages? for what?
00:08
I think he got tired of arguments, but I miss having him around.
@TheXed I told you, the Armageddon
@Zacharee1 lies...
@TheXed Reducing Internet bandwidth?
I've got three or four machines (plus countless chroots) all pulling the same packages.
That's not good.
Enter script.
Now a package only needs to be fetched once.
@TheXed le trooth
And you're not using something like apt-cacher and pointing it to your local repo because?
00:10
@NathanOsman Oh I see...
@hbdgaf apt-cacher doesn't properly handle mirrors.
shudders
I was using squid-deb-proxy but it was still duplicating stuff.
@NathanOsman ah, ok.
00:11
@NathanOsman probably faster that way too...download once, distribute many times...via your LAN
And it really wasn't all that easy to configure.
@NathanOsman apt-cacher or apt-cacher-ng?
@TheXed Exactly.
@ThomasW. I think he meant *-ng.
I meant ng
00:12
Yup, when my little app is complete, it will be a single binary with a single parameter - the directory to cache files to.
Does anyone know offhand how the textual installer chooses the drive for grub? Does it automatically offer the same drive as /, or does it default to /sda? In the second case if the hard drive came up as /sdc, you would definitely have to switch the grub target.
Then I just point all the machines to it (by setting an HTTP proxy) and presto!
I am thinking about shutting down my minecraft server...
@NathanOsman And it will be written in Go. Free of dependencies. - guessing
@NathanOsman on that bug, I marked it 'Incomplete" as we are missing info :P
00:12
@NathanOsman presto! apt issues :p
@hbdgaf Of course.
@Zacharee1 Issues?
I don't think anyone has logged into it for over a year...
I find your fascination with Go and reliance on Qt/C++ concurrently a little odd.
@NathanOsman all those questions about apt-get * trouble through a proxy? :p
@TheXed gimme teh IP
joshuapbell.com
00:14
@Zacharee1 Never had a problem like that.
The proxy is on the LAN.

@TheXed thx
did you see the link ? lol

geez. people can complain about anything. Example here - the negative review was "It is a combination alarm clock and timer that tucks away neatly in your appindicator dock, but it's limited to a 99 hour timer. Boo. Uninstalling" <-- really?
00:23
:p
@hbdgaf haha
I think when you need to time something longer than 99 hours, it's time to use a calendar app, not a timer.
seriously
Yes. Or increments in days, and you set your timer to a "work-day"
@Zacharee1 I'm serious by the way. That's give or take what the negative review said.
I saw it
When you're bored...
Aren't these great?
00:30
Must have been timing how long he could keep a plant alive or something... I don't know.
@hbdgaf lol
@hbdgaf But that would need a stopwatch
@Zacharee1 "My neighbor bet me I couldn't keep this plant alive for 999 hours" is the only scenario I could come up with.
It would fit with the derp jewelry you posted. Shaved head for losing the bet and all.
Also, if we get release names after pirates, I may die of a heart attack.

Toow for making flowcharts
@RPiAwesomeness that is so cool.
@RPiAwesomeness did you ever get Hectane up and running?
00:49
@RPiAwesomeness indeed very neat tool (bookmarked it)
Would any mods be able to edit my link above and make the text a bit more useful (describe what it is)
cool'
@NathanOsman I think so. I haven't had a chance to test it out yet, but I plan on doing so soon
@RPiAwesomeness what language are you calling to it from?
@NathanOsman Going to be JS
Probably via a jQuery AJAX request
00:51
Cool.
Do you want an example?
Or do you want that to be part of the challenge? :D
One thing to keep in mind - the same-origin policy may block the AJAX request unless you're serving from the same host:port.
I'll try it myself :)
Hectane doesn't do CORS, which, come to think of it, might not be a bad idea for a feature.
For now anyways

btw guys, Jeff Atwood asked us a question:

Q: Ubuntu Server 16.04 installs on /sdc but fails to boot

Jeff AtwoodI am doing a clean install of Ubuntu Server 16.04 LTS on a machine with a single internal SSD. After completing the install, the system fails to boot and prints a single line fsck output, with the rest of the screen entirely blank. This very same server installs Ubuntu Server 14.04.4 LTS just ...

holding the home key on the mx4 brings them up too
we should answer it
@Mateo sweet!
not that you have numbers on there... but it does give you a quick way to tap something over there
@TheBrownOne you're too late again :p
01:08
@Seth hrm, picture text. is this a test?
@Mateo can't copy text off a console... :/
@Fabby @cl-netbox @Rinzwind any ideas --^
yeah, on install
(sorry, mass pinging on this one :P)
so, we will let him off the hook ;)
@Seth Yeah, Jorge put the Jeff's question on twitter a little earlier. I suspect its's either incompatible firmware or unsigned firmware with secure boot, but I don't know for sure.
01:12
@chaskes that's interesting, since it worked on 14.04.
didn't something similar come up in chat
(Jorge also posted on G+, where I saw it)
14.04 didn't enforce the signed firmware. that's causing a lot of people trouble with realtek wireless
yeah, basically you could install with grub, then boot anything with that effectlivly geting around secure boot
the fact that 14.04 worked is what makes me think it's a signing issue. but there's no reason a regression in the kernel couldn't cause new incompatibilities in 16.04 that weren't in 14.04
01:15
you should comment about that @chaskes
Solution, don't buy something made for windows...
@Seth I was just re-reading the comments in order to do that
@Seth I retweeted it.
That's about the best I can do.
@NathanOsman I pinged Fabby :P
Every SSD I've used (and that includes USB installs) shows up as /dev/sda.
So I have no idea why it's showing as /dev/sdc.
To be fair, I've only done one 16.04 install so far though...
01:17
1 hour ago, by chaskes
Does anyone know offhand how the textual installer chooses the drive for grub? Does it automatically offer the same drive as /, or does it default to /sda? In the second case if the hard drive came up as /sdc, you would definitely have to switch the grub target.
Going to post some chat searches, don't know if revelant
It shouldn't boot at all if Grub isn't installed to the right drive/partition.
@Seth Ok, commented.
@chaskes cool! Learn something every day :)
@NathanOsman I've had several installs show the usb as /dev/sda and the hdd as /dev/sdb. If I have a 2nd usb in there (say, for debian non-free drivers) all bets are off on which is a,b, c. From what I've read, it's a race condition,
@Seth That's about the sum of my knowledge on that issue, though. If he askes a follow-up, I'm out.
@chaskes Yeah, that makes sense.
The installer should default to an internal drive (SATA) if present.
01:21
Oh, that was just eariler about the same thing huh..
Yeah, but it doesn't make an difference form an installation point of view so they prob figure why bother, but it would help with user experience.
I wonder if fastboot is on or something
I just commented that he should make sure secure boot is off.
Yeah all that stuff turn it off, maybe disable some of the other boot devices, put the disk on top
Something doesn't look right. The second partition is of type 5 (DOS 3.3+ Extended Partition) which doesn't support partitions larger than 8.4 GB. According to this page, "Using type 05 for extended partitions beyond 8 GB may lead to data corruption with MSDOS."Nathan Osman 14 secs ago
^--- a clue?
Oh wait.
Never mind.
I see what's happening there.
On a side note, I don't think he needs 16 GB of swap.
01:27
What is happening there? It looks look a normal auto created layout
user139252
@Zacharee1 what happened?
He must be testing some heavy, swapable server stuff
lol link him the swap guide ;p
@chaskes I don't think you want a server using that much swap. You would want to install more RAM.
@TheBrownOne I wanted someone to proofread my thesis paragraph, but I sent it already
01:29
but yeah, swap on a sSd would be fast, and you don't want to thrash it moving things in and out
@NathanOsman I'm just suggesting he probably has a reason to want that much swap or to think he does. :) but @Mateo you're right, I forgot about the no swap on an ssd
I've got 8 GB of RAM and only 1 GB of swap. I have yet to need more than that.
True, but he's only asking for help on getting it to boot, not the partition layout. :)
I know :D
Well, wasn't there something about having some swap on your primary drive?
01:32
I wonder what swap would be like on this guy? accessories.us.dell.com/sna/…
just saw lubuntu 16.04 for R Pi is out
Whoa...
Anyone have $18,000?
Why on earth is that so expensive?
That's a monster :0
I could build a RAID 0 array with the same amount of space and similar performance for at least half that.
01:34
You're right!
And could have a better perfomance!
hm, maybe special application
@NathanOsman Because it's designed to work with only 1 model of server, which lowers the number of units they can sell and so dramatically increases the unit cost for the break even point.
maybe a space limited application - only 1 drive bay to use
heat, power, ect...
Anyone who can me in detail what this line (dont run it in terminal it wil clog down your computer) does
:(){ :|: & };:
01:38
starts a process that starts two processes, each of which start two more infintly
something like that anyway ;)
Hi.
Thank you for all the suggestions, but . . .nothing works. I've been up and down the stty and screen manuals, i've used putty, i've changed mcu source code, baud rate, individual config bits. Basically the result is the same: nothing works and no one know why — Serg 54 secs ago
story of my life
@Serg what did you break this time>
?
01:41
@TheXed that's the whole point - i didn't break anything
Uhhh....
Slow and lacked space?
Nice try, troll.
WHO ARE THE 19 IDIOTS WHO FOUND THAT HELPFUL???!?
My MCU works with windows, receives ascii chars from keyboard alright, but on linux it's not working
@NathanOsman what was that for?
I get now . . . C1 for 61 , C2 for 62 and so on
@TheXed The review I posted a screenshot of.
01:42
@NathanOsman if you browse through amazon you will dinf many of those, and people voting it helpfull because they think it is funny
That isn't even close to funny.
me either.
now you made my message make no sense -.-
Sorry :/
:P
@NathanOsman No I meant what was the review for?
01:45
The Intel SSD I linked to above.
4TB internal SSD
Oh!
When 5000 MBps is "a bit slow", that's a good sign someone is a troll. That's 40 Gbps folks.
@NathanOsman or they don't know what they are doing with it...
well i would be more concerned that it laks the space to store minesweeper
:p
01:46
It's 4 TB.
What you guys recommends to me, I recently installed Ubuntu 16.04 x64 but I have a couple of bugs that screw up my Linux experience (haha). Like black screen at boot, no battery status icon, and so on. It's better to downgrade to Ubuntu 14?
now if i print hex values to 1 to 7 it prints 11 , 21, 31, 41 and so on . . .so MSB gets set correctly
i am so confuzed
Don't you know that the newest version of Minesweeper takes 40 TBs?
@Serg does any of this make sense: forum.arduino.cc/index.php?topic=44444.0 just googled some relavant words
@WilliamsAbrahamPerezCrazut It might be a better idea to downgrade. Quite a few things have changed in 16.04. Do you have an AMD graphics card?
@TheXed That's gonna take a hefty RAID array.
01:49
Yeah Minesweeper doesn't mess around...
@Mateo reading
No, I'm a noob here, have a Intel Integrated Grafics Card
(I'm waiting for someone to point out that "RAID array" is redundant.)
@WilliamsAbrahamPerezCrazut Hmm... the black screen issue is a bit strange then. I don't often hear of those on Intel graphics.
@WilliamsAbrahamPerezCrazut i would go at least for the next 3 months for 15.10, this was rock stable
Oh wait - do you mean it is black during boot but everything works fine afterwards?
01:51
@NathanOsman it depends on the how the RAID is configured....
No, after grub the laptop looks like suspended, but there's nothing on screen. I have to press power button to continue with the boot and then appears the desktop.
@NathanOsman it could be RAID 0
@Serg good thing you have a usb one, I had a touchscreen computer that had the screen attached to ttys6 :/
Which version do you recommend?
@Mateo I've got a board that can use either usb or rs232
and none of those things did the trick by the way
:( I'm out of my wits for today
I've tried changing anything and everything
user139252
01:57
@TheXed I thought it was only 38.5
@TheBrownOne actually it depends on the day.
or who is counting...
user139252
Ah, I see. Real day or Microsoft second day?
god im searching a question which came up last days about how to get people getting scripts from a wget with proper +x settings
just cant remember who asked this
@TheBrownOne right...
02:31
@Videonauth I answered one of those. My answer: You don't. You either use tar archives, and wget those and extract, or scp/rsync.
4
A: how to make file keeps it's permissions even it got copied

muruA pure combination of webserver + wget cannot do this. You'll have to try other options. You can: Provide a tar archive of the file On the server: tar cf puppetconf.sh.tar puppetconf.sh On the client: wget 10.1.5.128/puppetconf.sh.tar -O - | tar x Use scp/rsync to copy the file You will...

@muru no it was somone who wanted to make a repo of scripts he wrote for AU
and he wanted the files to run out of the box
2
Q: Download executable script from GitHub preserving +x permissions

Byte CommanderI want to make a GitHub repository of all relevant scripts I posted here as answers. But to keep it ultimately simple for the users, I would like to give them a single command to download the script file from my repository directly, without having to install git first to git clone the entire rep...

wow howd you find this so fast ?
Third result (and the date helped)
ah ok i was trying the site internal search which isnt quite helpfull
just had a heureka moment for a solution
02:42
@Videonauth you did see @kos and my comments below the question?
narf no, well sighs
if i ever see someone write that ubuntu has aprotection against forkbombs im gonna kill lol
just managed to kill my computer this way
lol, everyone also says don't try it ;p
well i dont mind rebooting but i saw some peopple write that theres a protection in ubuntu
to prevent them
i.e. here
possibally, but why launch a nuke even if you think you are in a bunker
5
A: Using a Fork Bomb to prevent interactive shell on root

bodhi.zazenIt would not do anything as any modern linux distro, Ubuntu included, has been patched so this fork bomb will not work (unless you change the default security settings). Go ahead, run it ;) See: Fork bomb protection not working : Amount of processes not limited http://superuser.com/questions/...

to test its integrity :)
i should have done that test in a vm
but ok so i have a freshly started laptop
it was anyways running since about 5 days
02:56
Well, still could fry the processor
na that cant happen
far before the modern boards would shutdown
believe me i seen that here already with a clogged airflow on the laptop
it simply shut down from alone as it turned to hot
Happens all the time, fan speed could be detected wrong
its not about fan speed its about temperature detectors directly inside the cpu
and if they would fail the cpu wont even startup
anway, lets just agree that running it hot constant is a bad thing
Even if you don't see immediate effect, or it protected you that time
yeah its not something id advise to do constantly i had it run twice like that till i decided its time to take the laptop apart and clean the airpipes
since then no problems anymore :)
but i have to day i have set the temperature when it has to shutdown in bios to about 25% lower than default
default for cpu was around 90° C and its now set to 75°C
silizium melts at 128°C so it should be very safe
03:11
@Videonauth
Not sure why you deleted your answer , but the idea was alright
except it's python, not sh
well it doesnt matter if the python script has the right shebangs
Sort of does matter . . . there's difference between python3 and 2.7
sh works in this case only as interpreter
yeah thats right but then you can aswell have the shebang say python3
If you tell sh or python3 to read commands from a file, the shebang is just a comment.
03:15
well doesnt matter i deleted my answer
no need in repeating something already stated if i cant add something to improve it
@NathanOsman @Videonauth youtube.com/watch?v=_keS5CgpBT0
@Seth btw, I noticed the the bug that opened nautilus when you emptied the trash from the launcher is gone. Wasn't that something you were fixing?
@chaskes I was trying, but it kept getting more and more complicated until I was digging around inside the nautilus dbus API.. So I didn't end up fixing it, but I tried.
@Seth Oh, ok.
03:59
Oh 16.10 is out :p

Q: PC turned off durring upgrade to 16.10. Now only have terminal page. What can I do

AWALEPC got turned off during the upgrade to 15.10. Now I only have a terminal screen. What can I do. Do I have to load from CD and lose all my files ?
