Apparently they had one for Wily too! Didn't spot that one! :D
I hate hello pings. Especially when they come when I'm at work doing something. They're distracting, I'd rather not see them when someone else is looking at my screen and they force me to take part in the conversation.
I have the chat tabs open by default so they open up when I load my browser. That doesn't mean I have chosen to enter chat.
IMHO, we should only ping people when we have something specific to tell them that is worth interrupting wehatever they're doing to bring them here.
Not just to say hi.
Or at least, please don't ping me just to say hi :)
8
only one person says hi to me and that only started recently.
if I am wanting others to say hi, I would start it with a 'hi' myself.
^^ That.
I guess it's just social norms from real life being applied here, but the context is different and they don't really carry over. \
I mute sounds when I am busy so I miss pings whether I intended it or not. So, there's that going for me.
Oh hi @terdon
>:D
11:08
kick-mutes Zach1.
@jokerdino Yeah, but then there's the pop up. And when you'r showing the boss something, it can be bothersome.
Nuuu
@jokerdino is that meant to sound so sad and pathetic?
Not a big deal of course, if I really didn't want to be pinged, I'd leave the room but I have 4 different rooms all in pinned tabs in my play-related browser window (I have two windows opening by default).
@terdon that's why you don't allow firefox to show desktop notifications and keep volume muted unless headphones are plugged in
At least that's what i do
And I want to be in the U&L room in case I'm pinged for mod stuff.
@Serg Yeah, but I want to see them if someone actually has something to say to me. I don't mind being pinged, I just don't want to be pinged for no reason other than social niceties and politeness.
11:10
@Zacharee1 it's a happy thought that I am not really harassed.
@HenryWhiteHatHacker Hello ! :)
Oh noes
It's hard to get a mod to say hello.
LOL
Generally, don't ping someone if there is nothing you require from them. Don't ask if they are around (naked ping) and just ask whatever you wanted in the first place.
@HenryWhiteHatHacker That's not true ... right @jokerdino ? Hi ! :)
11:13
hi
Wow. There was a whole conversation that went straight out the window! :P
@terdon that's what happens here
That's just hillarious
Aye
11:14
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
We have the collective attention span of a mythical goldfish
2
@jokerdino what is this ? something like a new AU language ? :D
It's the shrug in emoticon style.
aaahhh
11:27
@Fabby hence the word "mythical"
Hi bunch.
Nuuuu
Hi alone! ;-)
Ha, reading further up, I am glad I didn't ping terdon :) (blind pinging is not my habbit btw)
11:33
C U L8R...
Trying to catch attention. Sorry, rather desperate. I need answers in 3 hours or I fail.

[Install 32-bit OpenJFX in 64-bit Ubuntu](http://askubuntu.com/questions/757237/install-32-bit-openjfx-in-64bit-ubuntu)
Hi @JacobVlijm ! :) How are you today ? :)
Hi @cl-netbox good! actually a bored. No questions I like around at the moment :)
@cl-netbox How are you?
@JacobVlijm I am fine ... I found some questions to answer ... but you are right ... not a lot of good ones in the last days. :)
11:39
@JacobVlijm Hey, feel free to ping if you want to tell me something! I'd just rather not be pinged for a simple hello.
@dgood1 look up how to add the 32 bit architecture to 64 bit Ubuntu
Question : does anyone here read pdf / ebooks regularly ?
@Serg I do, on my tablet. Why?
@Serg Why ?
@terdon Nono, just kidding, especially when working, it can be annoying to be pinged.
11:40
@terdon @cl-netbox do you guys use a pencil / finger to follow along the text or just follow with the eyes ? How do you read ebooks in general ?
I'm just finding that I read ebooks slower than regular books
@Serg Um. Just like regular books.
@Serg just with eyes reading the text ... :)
Do you use a pencil or finger to read books?
Do you use a pencil/finger with normal books?
@Serg I always have my finger on the screen, slowly moving on in small steps
11:41
I think it's easier to read ebooks in a conventional way because pages are smaller and harder to get lost.
@terdon @jokerdino Well, with books I use finger , pencil or pen to follow along the line
Oh
Really?
I don't think I've ever actually seen anyone do that outside a movie.
@Serg are you a dyslect?
@Serg give using your big toe a try ! :D
Maybe he has a huge book with a massive page.
11:42
@terdon yeah, that's how I've gotten used to it. Because I can mark / underline some info.
@JacobVlijm not that i know
@jokerdino or very small fingers :)
I've never been formally tested for that anyway
@JacobVlijm Dyslexic?
Oli
Oli
Even on a computer I tend to highlight the row I'm reading, especially if it's big-block paragraphs
@jokerdino I am the only non- dyslect in this house (I think)
11:44
Dyslect is showing up in Wiki NL and nowhere else.
@jokerdino really? It is an interesting phenomena
@JacobVlijm It has a different spelling in English I think
@Zacharee1 did sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386 and now updating.
samd problem so far.
@jokerdino Ah, of course, maybe I am a dyslexic :)
@Serg use whichever way suits you.
11:46
@Zacharee1 Not sure what sudo apt-get install libc6:i386 libncurses5:i386 libstdc++6:i386 will do but I'll try installing them
Sometimes, I have a pencil in hand because I like to fidget a bit when reading textbooks. When reading literature, I have a pillow.
Proper english spelling is dyslectic
@Zacharee1 Well, I'm sad. Those are already installed. I'm still stuck.
@Serg admit, you had to look it up, right? :)
@JacobVlijm yes . . . because English isn't my first language ^_^'
11:48
@Serg Ctrl+F shows no results
Dyslexic is the one I am familiar with.
@jokerdino wrong link , let me fix that
There, much better
like i said yesterday my tab management skills aren't the best :)
a relatively high percentage of physicists, mathematicians, graphic artists, programmers and airplane pilots are dys.. whatever..
@Serg Actually, no, dyslexic is far more common. Look at the dictionary link you gave.
@JacobVlijm dys. . . whatever. . . was that indented as a pun ? :D
@Serg There seems two variants of spelling of the same word. Both are probably proper English spelling.
@Serg Silly question, but what is pun?
pun is when a word has two or more meanings.
A creative joke using a word or phrase
and you intend it or not for it to have those several meanings.
11:52
@jokerdino Ah, thanks
@terdon I knew it. Dyslexia was invented!
I can't think of any good puns right now . . .
AND Einstein was a dysl
except for offensive ones
@Serg so you'd better be dyslexic :)
11:54
@jokerdino Well, it was named quite late. You'd find a similar pattern if you searched for, say, autism. That doesn't mean it was invented.
Well . . . I guess I'll use some unix puns
Because that's not AWKward
@terdon aw, guess the sarcasm wasn't quite strong in that one.
That's what she sed
I am pretty sure autism and extreme creativity are related btw
@jokerdino Damn thing always has trouble coming through in chat.
11:55
Sysadmins shouldn't engage in SUDOmasochism
(that came out a bit wrong)
@terdon and there are cases when I imagine a person is being sarcastic when they are actually serious about it.
Time to get dressed and go to my 8 AM class.
even though it's only 6
@Serg go get them
Anyone know what's up with manpages.ubuntu.com?
It's been down since yesterday
And serving old stuff now
@muru Still?
11:59
@MontielJoy What? Do you know how twitter works? You're yelling at a women's magazine named The Establishment every day, not the government.
Down for me as well :/
@JacobVlijm yes, now searches show 12.04-14.04 pages, and the links don't work
> The Ubuntu manpages site is currently undergoing maintenance and should return shortly.
2
Expect it to be back in 6-8 weeks.
2
After Xenial's full release perhaps ?
@jokerdino :'(
12:03
By the way, today is the 104th anniversary of Titanic's sinking
OK, now i'm out
@Serg What were you sinking?
I can't find any bugs about the manpagesUC here. bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-manpage-repository
@muru The Ubuntu manpages site is currently undergoing maintenance and should return shortly.
@cl-netbox Indeed.
How soon is the 67 million dollar question.
12:06
@muru That's what is shown when you enter the URL.
@cl-netbox yes, see jokerdino's reply above.
But nobody actually goes to manpages.ubuntu.com
All the manpage links in various posts here
not me, nope
Those are broken
@muru hahaha ... I thought it would be the 1 billion dollar one ! :D
one more ping and he is going to roast you.
12:08
@jokerdino no, I switched the sound
Was it the sound that annoyed you?
oh yes ... shit ... forgot ... :D
That horrible chat notification sound is gone, and now I enjoy a much nicer sound.
@jokerdino Yep.
Understandable.
Especially on speakers. :(
12:10
Better!
I think generally the sound has one big advantage ... when you work in another tab you get notified when someone says something to you ... that surely sometimes annoys, but better than not to get notified.
@muru, make a new StackApps post about the new script maybe?
@cl-netbox sound has an advantage. But not that sound.
@jokerdino It's Lekenstyn's, just updated.

Q: SE Chat custom notification sound

People keep surprising me: askubuntu.com/q/757239/72216
@muru yes this indeed is true ... there are nicer sounds :)
12:16
@muru what did you update? Add it as an answer so the question gets bumped to the front maybe?
Did you do more than updating the links?
@jokerdino yes, the plugin interfacing code was broken
We could ask Jacob to visit Lekensteyn and tell him about the change.
@jokerdino Sure, that would be good. Lekenstyn's been online since then, so I assumed he wasn't interested in that anymore.
12:23
I was half joking there.
Both of them are Dutch.
:D
I would recommend you to post the updated script as an answer.
@jokerdino Just converted my comment to an answer
Because I nearly missed the fixed script at first glance.
@muru +1. Missed it.
Well, I can't actually +1 there. CBA to create an account there.
What's CBA?
Couldn't be arsed?
12:25
Yeah.
too lazy in lazyspeak
@jokerdino well, lazy enough to write CBA, you'd be too lazy to create accounts. :P
I have nothing more to add. :D
12:50
@SmokeDetector most coherent spam yet
@terdon Before 1960, you were just dumb... (cc @jokerdino)
@muru I do... to look for man pages of stuff I don't have installed (yet).. (cc: @jokerdino)
@muru How did you do that?
@Fabby Hey man, maybe you were dumb back then. I wasn't even born yet!
@Fabby Chrome added a search shortcut for it after I started visiting it often
So I never see the front page
@Fabby that Stack App I mentioned later on
@muru yeah, and then? copy it to greasemonkey?
@Fabby install greasemonkey. It will install the js on its own
13:06
I have it installed... It only shows the SE status script...
That's strange. I use Chrome/Tampermonkey, so dunno if I broke something with FF and Greasemonkey
It should work fine, though.
It works alright in FF45.

Q: How do i change my username?

user281916I signed in with Google and i didnt get to choose my username, is there a way to change it? I cannot find a button under my profile.

can someone ping me to test the sound?
13:09
@Fabby Well!
@Fabby ping !!!!! :D
mmmh, still the old sound...
@Fabby does it play when you select the sound?
@Fabby What about that ??? :D
Can you change the sound of the ping?
13:10
testing again...

@muru THANK YOU!
You need to install Greasemonkey or Tampermonkey
@cl-netbox again?
@Fabby test
13:13
@Fabby I did not understand what you meant ... :)
meh, still net getting the Ubuntu sound!
still the "doh!" sound...
@Fabby do the other sounds work?
SO, MSE?
lemme try u&l
@Fabby there's no U&L sound. O.o
@muru linux.stackexchange.com...
Ah! Maybe noscript is blocking it....
13:16
@Fabby if that were the case, you shouldn't even be able to select a sound.
ah! Select sound!
@cl-netbox try again?
@Fabby okay ! :)
@Fabby :D
nothing now...
:'(
13:19
ah!
@Fabby hmmm
As before, do you hear a sound when selecting it?
NoScript is indeed blocking it!
works now!
@Fabby yay!
@Fabby great ! :)
13:20
lemme turn it off again!
:(
mmmh, once enabled, "remove temporary settings" in NoScript has no effect!
So I'm stuck with it!
@Fabby PING ! :D
try agin in 5 seconds (switching tabs)
13:22
@Fabby so storing the sound preference is the problem?
no problem...
@Fabby PING ! :)
@muru (although it messes with another plugin I have)
Which one? Ill try testing when I reach my hostel
GNotifier
GNotifier integrates Firefox/Thunderbird's notifications with the native notification system. It supports most Linux desktops, Windows 8.1 and 10
@cl-netbox again?
13:24
@Fabby done ! :)
nope, even when disabling the script, GNotifier stops working...
restarting FireFox...
@Fabby since this only changes the sound, I don't know why it would affect displayed notifications
I dunno either, but as I have NoScript installed, it could be that it's the combination...
Saving on bandwidth...
Disconnecting.
@Fabby yes that most probably will be the root cause ... one of the downsides of noscript ... :)
13:55

@muru holy crap, I hadn't realized who Thomas Dickey was!
16:17
@terdon I thought all the regulars on Unix & Linux knew by now - he answers a lot of questions about stuff he develops.
@muru I know he does, I just hadn't realized he was the maintainer of all those tools.
I realized when I was testing lynx's feature where it asks to install downloaded deb files
I knew we had Ole who writes GNU parallel and who's been brilliant with all parallel related stuff.
And then there's the maintainer of byobu.. Don't remember his name, though.
And now I feel dumb.
He works for Canonical now.
16:21
He is the Product manager
@jokerdino hence the "dumb" feeling. I've been reading his posts on ZFS and the announcement of Bash on Windows and all
and completely forgot the byobu part
Haha
I am not sure if byobu was a canonical project all along.
> Dustin Kirkland originally authored Byobu in December 2008 while working for Canonical on the Ubuntu server and cloud team. He has continuously maintained the project since then, in his spare time.
OK, that settles that.
You are running an unsupported kernel. Run a supported version of Ubuntu with a supported kernel and you will have less problems. — LiveWireBT 2 days ago
