Flagged them both
Oh right, you can't CV yet...
user139252
Nope :(
They picked up CVs here...
00:05
The questions. I voted.
Ah
@TheBrownOne there you go +4
We just need to get @Fabby in here...
Maybe if I say his real name 3 times....
:D
be nice :|
no
neevar
@Seth I like that the glances scope got the innovation win.
cool:
@Seth Aw, no @Mateo?
:p
There were only 16 entries?
@hbdgaf yeah, it looks pretty cool!
@Zacharee1 not this time :(
His scope was mentioned at the bottom though.
@Seth Are those 12 honorable mentions or all other contestants?
00:29
I seez it
@hbdgaf that's what I was just trying to figure out..
but I can't tell.
> 1st winner

System 76 Meerkat (5th gen I5, 8GB RAM, 120GB SSD)
“Convergence pack” (Bluetooth keyboard and mouse)
Slimport adapter
Maybe I should make a scope.... :p
IMO 2nd place gets a better deal:
> 2nd winner

Valve’s Steam Controller
Valve’s Steam Link
“Convergence pack” (Bluetooth keyboard and mouse)
BQ Aquaris E5 HD Ubuntu Edition
Eh. The number of entries for the app showdown was astronomical iirc... like people were complaining that the apps couldn't get reviewed fast enough etc etc. If only 12 non-winning entries, that was a LARGE falloff
well scopes != apps so..
I dunno.
This is what, the 3rd scope showdown though? Plus the 1 or 2 app showdowns?'
That's a lot.
It is a lot.
@Seth Me neither. Probably harder to come up with a good scope idea though.
@hbdgaf yeah, that's what I was thinking. Scopes are a bit more limited.
@hbdgaf see all the local candy shops! :D
Best BestBuys in the area :p
Is there a cheap device tracker scope?
@Seth Well, that and anything that provides the sort of data @Zacharee1 was wanting to use is going to need a throttled/paid API key...
00:33
:)
yeah, getting data is probably the hardest part.
Mateo's last data source filled up with spam, for e.g.
?
How so?
I remember on the first app showdown, I was going for a simple tool and the google elevation api blocked me for a week during testing.
haha
Main site sure is quiet
cue the spam
Not the right time of day
00:36
Getting close :p
An hour or two I'd say
This needs more stars:
6 hours ago, by The Brown One
@ParanoidPanda Yucky Yak.
@Zacharee1 It was a simple idea really. Grab elevation, lat, long, and generate very rough 3d maps with blender, so you could just say "I want mountains, so add a lot of terrain spikes" or whatever. Sort of a first step tool to being able to "terrain type" paint an elevation map and just import it in to a game or simulation.
sounds interesting
and somewhat non-simple :p
Well, the rough map generation is simple. The terrain painting/procedural generation would have gotten non-simple quickly.

Hmph. When was the last site cleanup? Don't we do those around the time of LTS releases? Or did we find that it incentivized being overzealous?
@Seth ^^
00:42
@hbdgaf lets just say the last one was before my time..
@Seth found a really nice api after the contest ;P
@Seth Oh... okay.
It has come up a few time since, but the majority opinion of the other moderators is that they cause more problems than they help.
so my new scope is going to be really cool
But ideas about cleanup related stuff are always helpful :)
@Mateo shoot :/
00:43
I could see how it can incentivize close hammering and slapshod answers.
still want to do the call your US rep one
@hbdgaf @Oli mentioned starting a 5 a day program or something similar. He already has most of the infrastructure up from the last cleanup. No idea if anything happened along that idea though.
@Mateo I wonder if you could get data from the EFF and FFTF, maybe ACLU too. Make a "techoactivism" scope.
#randomthoughts
would be cool, here is the place that is doing the number api: whoismyrepresentative.com
@Mateo What're you planning?
@hbdgaf The biggest problem is it moves focus from the >200 questions coming in every day to old stuff that happened 2 years ago, theoretically perpetuating the problem. I like cleanups personally, but this does seem to be an all too valid argument.
00:46
@Zacharee1 oh, I'm doing a wine/alcohol search scope now
kos
kos
@Serg Nice, no, no particular requirement, technically it was the second window from the top of the stack (e.g. two full-screen windows one on top of the other, a keystroke toggles the focus between the two without having to SUPER+TAB+TAB+ENTER or worse)
@Mateo still? :p
it has lot's of features
kos
kos
However it's the same, as long as it toggles between two windows at a certain distance in the stack I can fix the number myself ;)
00:48
it will be a good one to learn on too, a few things I haven't figured out that I need to use for it
@Mateo How so?
accounts, favorites, pictures, more pictures, stores, location, type, color, price, rating, food pairings, ect. really a nice source
@Seth Ahh. I thought the idea was to basically "purge the site of all cruft" before the "new" started rolling in. So, theoretically every LTS release starts a new AU support cycle ;) see timing them before LTS releases. sorry for the double ping
@Mateo So Imgur for Alcohol?
00:51
308x573?
starting on some more of the settings
What screen has that resolution?
@hbdgaf that was the idea, and then people realized the "new" doesn't stop for cleanups :/
@Mateo is this an emulator?
00:52
@Zacharee1 the little window on my desktop, with the desktop kit
yeah, the desktop runner, you can drag it any size
That explains the varying resolution low-res images :p
2 mods
@NathanOsman whatever happened to @GeorgeTheDev?
k then
Weren't you at his funeral?
no O_o
00:54
I'm pretty sure I remember you being there...
:P
On a slightly less creepy (and disappointing) note, no, he's still around.
He was removed from this room due to abuse.
abuse?
@NathanOsman did it involve a karate kick by a mod?
Although it wasn't really malicious abuse... more like "over eager users playing with him".
It made the room noisy.
00:55
<-- probably :p
Bring him back in quietly :p
sneak in through the back door JS gives you
tired
@NathanOsman His greet and dismiss was a little eh, but it wasn't so bad. I'm just glad people stopped using flackbot
what's that?
George vs. FlackBot.
01:05
@NathanOsman If they could accidentally interact, that would be hilarious - in the sandbox
speaking of Doctor Who.. this is pretty funny:
It would get boring fast. FlackBot was the only one that actually varied its responses to sentences it didn't understand.
@Seth also relevant to the flackbot conversation.
01:25
I have a dual-boot : Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu 14.04 and the former is offering this ahem free upgrade to Windows 10. Will there be an issue with the dual boot if I upgrade to Windows 10? Any other issues that I must be expecting?
@Aiyoyo Some people have had it where Windows 10 overwrites GRUB and some haven't
@Aiyoyo I had a similar setup when I upgraded.
It's fairly simple to restore if GRUB disappears
Worst case scenario: the MBR is overwritten and you need to install GRUB again.
Basically what @Zacharee1 said :D
Restoring grub is fine, I guess.
01:28
The one other thing to remember is that unless you reconfigured GRUB, Ubuntu will boot by default. When the installer restarts, it needs to boot back into Windows. So you're kinda stuck hanging around during the upgrade to make sure the right OS loads.
Or you could set Windows to the default option temporarily
@Zacharee1 Nooooooo!
ah sed tempurerileh
@Zacharee1 That's interesting. I wonder if the "didn't overwrite grub" group had windows on sdb or not?
01:30
That's the setup I have.
Linux on a /dev/sda partition and Windows on one of the /dev/sdb partitions.
are you in the overwrite or no overwrite group?
I don't remember the MBR being overwritten when I did the 8.1 => 10 upgrade.
But perhaps the MBR remained unchanged between 8.1 and 10.
Who knows.
Shouldn't've
user139252
01:55
@Zacharee1 No! No double contractions!
@TheBrownOne I guess a shouldn't've'd them in there
user139252
Now you're just being ridiculous.
Y'o'u'd'o'n''t's'a'y
user139252
I'm going to disable your cloud account :p
Its good to use contraction's properly :D
user139252
02:03
You are all so mean.
I'm not mean - I'm usually the last person to use "its" and "it's" incorrectly.
user139252
I know :P
But it wouldn't have been a pun if they were used correctly, now would it?
user139252
Okay, I'm on Windows right now... Why do I have so many "Visual C++ Redistributable" items installed?
user139252
I'm moving over to the super user chat...
02:11
@TheBrownOne Programs are usually linked against a specific version. The more programs you have, the more variety of versions you'll require.
user139252
Yeah, that's what Root Access said
user139252
Why did I start Windows... I forgot when I noticed it was slow to boot and DavMail was installed despite me not needing it for over a year...
user139252
I still have TurboTax 2012 installed -_-
03:04
Wow.
Twitter's down.
That's a pretty major event.
^--- screenshot for the "pics or it didn't happen" crowd
10 years from now, I'll be able to tell my kids what it was like living through the great Twitter outage of '16.
:D
Well, at least we have an error page now.
Fail.
@Zacharee1 got me thinking of this
>>> print(list('youdontsay'))
['y', 'o', 'u', 'd', 'o', 'n', 't', 's', 'a', 'y']
JavaFX has forsaken me! dies
Works mkay for me @NathanOsman could be the canadian side of the chirper
(that's a pun on twitter)
Still not loading here.
((just in case someone asks))
03:11
Maybe a load balancer is borked.
probably canadian servers are down or something
It alternates between error and blank pages.
@dgood1 At least you're not stuck with AWT.
Still sad though. tried the chatrooms 3 days ago, but my problem is 10 days now.

My program doesn't seem to tell the printer to print something. No errors, no null pointer, not even a print queue.

It just doesn't print. And it worked before I moved to 64 bit Ubuntu.
I'm afraid I know precious little about Java. Only enough to do a bit of Android development.
Though to me the problem seems like less of a language issue and more of a JVM / CUPS issue.
If AWT can print, I'd convert in a heart beat. But I tried one of the Samples in Oracle, and it errors.
I agree. TTwTT
03:16
Isn't AWT deprecated anyway?
The last chat suggested Swing, which is an extension of AWT.
03:32
Found it. It's scary since the problem is 8 years old, but it seems 64 bit Java DOES have a problem with CUPS
just as I was about to post a freakin question about my bluetooth mouse, it suddenly got connected and works properly . . . oh the irony
@Serg I've lost count of how many times that's happened to me.

4 hours later…
07:33
@TheBrownOne Whew! ;-)
@cl-netbox I have no money, so there's nothing to hide... :P
@cl-netbox It was still in the testing phase: no harm done!
@Zacharee1 Huh?

1 hour later…
Oli
Oli
08:46
So. 4K is nice.
Going to the Snow Unix Event tomorrow! Awh yeah!
@Oli nice!
Oli
Oli
Need to increase the DPI a little and that doesn't sound like fun when there are multiple toolkits in use but Borderlands2 looks amazing.

Morning!
user136984
I skipped a day! I thought it was already Friday today! :D
user136984
Sad it's not... :(
I've posted an answer onto the wrong question ! DUCK!
user136984
@Serg That's the first I've heard of someone doing that! :D
user136984
But I'm sure you're not the first...
10:13
@ParanoidPanda I was writing an answer and didn't realize i am on the wrong tab
user136984
Ducks are also a great way of releasing stress... :P
user136984
And you're not the first with that! ;D
user136984
I knew someone who loved releasing his stress on ducks... :D
user136984
Poor ducks...
user136984
@Serg: Ducks are fun, but every time you do mention them, I get bad memories, so please keep that in mind.
10:15
Good morning ! :)
user136984
@cl-netbox: Morning! :)
@ParanoidPanda Hello my friend - good morning ! :)
@ParanoidPanda sorry , i'll try to keep up
Morning @cl-netbox
@Serg Good morning my friend ! :)
@ParanoidPanda You should drink less! It's bad for your brain; black-outs will occur more often! ;-) :P
@Serg I've posted a comment on the wrong question...
never an answer though!
@ParanoidPanda Now i could say something, but that would be illegal in your country...
Off-line!
10:19
What was that @ParanoidPanda ? tox crashed ? :D
user136984
I accidentally attack Seth instead of Serg yesterday about a non-functioning while loop... :P
@Fabby Well, my sleep schedule is all over the place, so no surprise i do stupid stuff
user136984
@cl-netbox: Actually, yes, my system just told me it closed expectantly! :D
@ParanoidPanda Ha, and how did Seth react ?
user136984
@Serg: He was very confused and said that he "hadn't used a while loop in a while"... :D
10:20
@Serg Or work too hard... ;-)
@ParanoidPanda That never happened on my system ... :D
Honestly . . . I have not been working very hard lately. Quite the opposite.
@Fabby : Good morning ! :)
:-)
I think I need some form of change to actually boost my productivity. That's like the same thing that happened when i switched to Ubuntu. So I need to find something that will make me excited about learning new things
10:27
@Serg what could this be ? :)
@cl-netbox well , not sure. Could be a new language (human or programming one). Actually, I've plans for studying a few programming languages. There's also a nice chance to go to China for me this summer, but i've been hesitating a lot about it
@Serg you are a phenomenon to me ... really ! :)
* ^_^ *
@Serg Go! And visit that GF of yours!
@Fabby won't be possible anyway - the tour will go nowhere close to her city :/
10:35
@Serg Tell her to visit you on your tour! :P
Could be a thing
doubt it though
Then she's not worth your time: find another one that is on your tour schedule!
@Fabby oh oh oh ... :D
@Zacharee1: upgoated
@Serg There's no way that's true. Can you imagine the air resistance at 90mph in that position?
10:48
@terdon that's probably one of the reasons why the design never took off :)
In addition , the control factor - it's sort of a unicycle with an engine, and not a lot of people can ride a unicycle
Just saw my first political ad on YouTube.
It was for Hillary
Holy crap! Actually, @Serg, it may well be true: blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2010/11/22/…
Or, at least, a well designed hoax. Huh.
@Serg I would guess riding a motored one would be much easier. Also consider the size of the tire, that means a large chunk of it will always be in contact with the ground, increasing stability, I guess.
@Zacharee1 And that is the reason campaign finance in the US will never change: the media doesn't want to lose the money it brings in!
@Serg @Zacharee1 @terdon @cl-netbox @Fabby Hello! :)
@HenryWhiteHatHacker Don't ping "hello" in the future, please?
4
10:54
@HenryWhiteHatHacker good morning
Good morning to you BTW...
@Fabby hello!
@Zacharee1 Mail server, Unix command, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera, ...
@terdon actually if you google monowheel, you get a lot of modern results too. I think the design has some potential afterall
@Serg Indeed. I stand corrected.
10:56
@Fabby STAHP
@Fabby should we tell cl-netbox about the hello thing?
Please be my guest...
Personally I don't mind the hello pings
@Zacharee1 YES!
I thought I had.
user136984
Where will I be able to find the Origami instructions for Xenial? :)
Should i get coffee ?
