Work WiDi!
The farthest I can get this screen mirror is to the splash screen for it on the TV and a "Connecting" message on the computer
I'm not getting an IP on its private network
Very odd, I can colorize output of awk using escape sequences in the BEGIN statement, but not otherwise
I can get Looney Tunes for free on the Roku

yay, 2500 rep

It's snowing here...
Seasons 1,2 and 8 of Spongebob are free with Amazon Prime :D
14:42
besides my comment fine :+
@TheBrownOne gatz :+) now give them to me.
@Rinzwind someone's jealous
:p
nope/
I just gave them what they need to use to decide
my 1st action was to closed it ;-) it is a matter of opinion
So a group of random kids just were walking though hallway and looked inside the lab . . . .And I was greeted by a panda (a kid in panda hat/mask )
14:43
But it isn't' they're all equally easy :p
not always true
I have seen beta to normal go wrong due to a small bug
(and the bug killed the video driver so was pretty damaging)
@Serg noooooooow the question of the day. DID THE PANDA LOOK PARANOID?
@Rinzwind This one was quite cheerful actually :)
oh he found a bamboo stash?
Maybe :) After all it was just a little kid , and kids are mostly cheerful.
user136984
@Serg They have to, it's part of their training (as a Panda spy)... In fact it was one of my little evil minions come to plant bamboo in your lab! >;D
14:57
7 votes already! wow
@ParanoidPanda you trained them well , I see :)
@ParanoidPanda : You asked me something in tox ... but I can't answer - you are offline ... :D
@Zacharee1 I've 5 upgoats so far . . . Somehow not quite feeling accomplished so far . . .
huehuehue

user136984
THE PANDAS ARE TAKING OVER!!!
user136984
RESISTANCE IS FUTILE.
@ParanoidPanda I thought they were moving to Japan...
user136984
OH NO, MY CAPS LOCK KEY IS STUCK!
user136984
15:34
@Zacharee1: THEY ARE... THEY ARE JOINING THE SPECIAL PANDA MILITARY DIVISION! ;P
user136984
OH, JUst a matter of removing some chocolate cake from underneath the caps lock key... :D
15:47
@ParanoidPanda still stuck ? ... offline again ? :D
Maybe I should go watch some tv series or something . . . I don't have that much motivation right now.
@Serg why not ... good idea ... sometimes it's not the right time for something else ... :)
16:23
@A.B. Hello my friend ! :) How are you ? :)
@cl-netbox headache
@A.B. oh ... not very nice ... from the weather ?
@cl-netbox I don't know, was a hard week
@A.B. so from work ... a little bit better now ? :)
@A.B. sorry to hear that , my friend, hope you feel better eventually. Try massaging point between thumb and first finger, maybe that will help
16:36
@Serg thx =)
GitLab-CI and the GitLab runner drives me crazy
what's gitlab ?
@_@ that seems interesting . . .
why is that confusing?
@Seth well . . i am a bit confused, but that's not what i wanted to express with that emoticon
16:46
oh. pretty sure that's the confused emoticon.
Hi @Seth ! :)
hi!
According to internetslang it means dazed or hypnotized . . . i'm sort of interested . . .
@Serg According to Led Zeppelin ... Dazed and Confused ! :D :D :D

Q: How to install Electrum 2.6.3 bitcoin wallet on Ubuntu / Mint and derivates

burian.vlastimilToday's question of mine was How do I install Electrum 2.6.3 bitcoin wallet on my Linux Mint, Ubuntu and it should work on other derivates.

user139252
17:11
I realise now how sad that sounded, @Seth can delete it
was that asking for it to be deleted or giving permission? Now I'm not sure..
user139252
Asking for a delete, I'll leave now
ugh . . . I'm trying to print a list of items from an array, but i don't want comma after the last item . . . it's annoyingly simple yet i can't approach it
17:28
My script works ! \ (^_^) /
now I can make the active window float up to the top of the launcher
17:41
Goodbye :) See you tomorrow :)
@cl-netbox see ya ^_^

Q: Bootloader Grub2 - delete partition where ubuntu resides

javaI have a dualboot with the following two Os's: Windows10 Kubuntu And the bootloader Grub2 What happends with the bootloader if I delete/formats the partition where Kubuntu is installed? Does it detect this and deletes the *ubuntu from the list? See attached image!

@Serg All the best ... see you ! :)
user139252
@Serg I didn't there was a comma after the last item...
@TheBrownOne there isn't comma after the last item. I am using for loop in bash to printf "%s , " each item
user139252
17:47
Ah, bash.
user139252
I assume everybody always uses python :P
And here's why I was trying to do that
0
Q: How to make active application float to the top of the launcher

SergHow would one make icons on the launcher jump to the top of the launcher when switching to a window using Alt+Tab or by clicking that window's icon on the launcher ?

self publishing
user139252
Gotta run
See ya !
it's crazy how awesome coreutils and bash are..
17:55
@Seth they sure are . . . there's tools for a lot of tasks : tac, basename, bc, etc.
Of course python combines a lot of those in itself . . . but still pretty awesome stuff can be done with coreutils and bash alone
the important part is knowing when to use what tool.
that true . . . a good example of that was couple days ago, when a user was trying to find external disk usage by ls'ing recursively all the files and summing their size . . . which is what du already can do anyway :)
So as of right now my git has 19 scripts . . . Of course quality is better than quality but still, makes me quite happy for some reason
18:10
@Seth if only bash didn't have such a foul syntax
@badp what's wrong with bash syntax ?
almost all of it :P
That's very descriptive
fish has a much nicer syntax, but it does lead to you googling how to do some stuff that bash has special syntax for
@badp eh, you get used to it.
I'm so used to it that when I tried fish I absolutely couldn't do anything :P
and fish doesn't have !!.
or &&
Now I use fizsh.
18:13
&& is replaced by and (git pull; and git push)
I forget what !! is supposed to be
@badp yeah but it never worked for me..
the syntax was weird.
@badp expands to the last run command.
then that's replaced by the up arrow and the Enter key? :)
no no, it's for use in expressions.
Meh, bash isn't the worst. My concerns are more with technical stuff , like there's a lot of small issues that aren't apparent right away, for instance newlines in filenames, the number of arguments limit in exec and so on and so forth
the most used of which is probably sudo !!.
18:16
@Seth ehhhh, that would become a misfeature with fish's always-on ctrl-r
@Serg which goes back to my earlier point, if you start running into a lot of those you're probably using the wrong tool.
if you really want that you can sudo (history | tail -n1) (fish history doesn't put numbers in the output)
@Seth I don't run into those that much on daily basis . . . but over the course of using Ubuntu for 2 years, I've come to see some of these issues . Some of the questions on this site were quite eye-opening .
It's just that some things are not apparent right away. Like , when I realized my variables disappear if I set them over a pipe, I didn't know pipes are actually subshells
@badp that's like 10 times the characters :P
@badp what's that supposed to do? ctrl+r has no apparent affect for me in fish..
@Seth actually it's the same number of keystrokes
after the first time
sudo (→
...I think
yeah
@Seth it searches through your command history
18:29
@badp but then if I use another subshell it won't default to the history one.. Although I guess I can just keep pressing →?
19:15
@j0h @Rinzwind care for a testdrive? ppa is available: Xenial, Wily, Vivid, and Trusty (at this very moment, Xenial is pending): ppa:vlijm/abouttime
@JacobVlijm if I may suggest so, pm and am typically go after the time , so like quater past six | pm | evening , at least to me, would look more appropriate
@Serg good idea! will change the order. Probably some more small changes will be in the next few days :)
@JacobVlijm Doesn't work with GNOME 3
@A.B. What are the symptoms? Will test in on Gnome...
@JacobVlijm I can't see the time, only the icon
no screenshot possible :(
19:24
@A.B. I assumje setting prefs does not change it? in Mate, I had to enable indicators.
In GNOME we have this taskbar overlay
at the bottom left corner
quite possible it's one of those things that works in unity alright but not in gnome :/
yes
@Serg I tested it on Mate.. Starting up Gnome
mkay
user139252
19:30
@Zacharee1 @Fabby your sites might go down later this week, I'm doing what I can to prevent anything from happening
@TheBrownOne OK. Why though?
@Serg I was to slow =)
@A.B. the chirp question ?
@Serg yes =)
@A.B. It's alright ;) there's plenty of other ones
19:32
=)
@A.B. nope, doesn't work on Gnome (yet) it seems also Gnome misses some dependencies which are default on Unity.
@JacobVlijm the output works. I can hear the voice
@A.B Thanks, this was the case on mate before I set support for indicators on, on Mate 15.10. Wait, what is your Ubuntu version? Mate is supported from 15.10
16.04 and GNOME 3.20 =)
19:53
@Serg, the awk guy =)
1
A: How do I highlight a word or a phrase in a command's output?

SergUsing ANSI escape sequences , one can colorize anything in console. Combining that method with awk, we can filter specific words , and make them colorized. Consider this example: $> df | awk '{for(i=1;i<=NF;i++){ if($i~/sda/) $i=sprintf("\033[0;36m %s \033[0;00m",$i)}; print}'

Yeah :) one of my favourite tools
Any of you happen to know what the meaning of the error
pci 0000:00:01.0: ASPM: Could not configure common clock
tpm_tis 00:01: A TPM error (7) occurred attempting to read a pcr value
is?

user136984

It's not like the usual stuff... Not just on a loop with more or less the same stuff that is...
hi
this is the most beautiful music i've ever hear :)
user136984
VTC this 16.04 bug question.
Maybe I should publish some of my other scripts
I merged 2 accounts and my rep went from 75 to 95
@Serg sure!!!
20:09
but I got banned from asking questions :(
@A.B. they're quite simple though :/ I've a script that keeps changing the colors of the unity launcher
@SQuirel currently 106 =)
106 is combined from all sites
@Serg GitHub or GitLab?
I could ask question on both accounts before the merge
20:10
@A.B. I've got them all on github. What I mean is publish them here , on AU
but I can't after merging :(
@Serg ok, understand =)
I don't think I've asked/answered a question in months!
stack exchange really needs to lighten up...
@SQuirel Ask a mod
@SQuirel yeah, I rarely ask questions myself. You probably should learn from @ParanoidPanda I've no idea how he comes up with all those questions O_o
20:12
@Serg LOL
How many questions have been asked on stack exchange?
@SQuirel in total ? um . . . probably over a million
ok then, so there's over a million question all on the same topic
ParanoidPanda has more than 400 questions? @_@
there's a pretty high chance that my problem is somewhat similar to someone elses problem
why should I be punished for a "duplicate"?
20:16
@A.B. How on earth O_O?
OP of that chirp question decided to write me message into my answer
facepalm
@Serg my newest bad habit: vaporfi.com/electronic-cigarettes
@A.B. Ah, vaping ! My co-worker , who also works part time in a vape shop, tried to convert me , but i have not made up my mind to try it yet. I will eventually though :)
@Serg It's great =)
Smoking?
That's what cars do when they're broke :)
@SQuirel Vaping my friend =)
user136984
20:24
@A.B. Yes, almost 500! :D
user136984
Just 35 to go before I hit that!
@ParanoidPanda is there a badge for asking certain amount of questions ?
user136984
@Serg: I don't know, I was too just thinking that... :D
user136984
I don't think so, but there should be!
yeah, i've looked and there's only badges for amount of views and score on a question
there's no badge for amount of questions asked
user136984
20:31
@Serg: If there were, all the spammers would be aiming for it! ;P
@Serg there is (sort of) askubuntu.com/help/badges/187/socratic amd the lower ones.
Inquisitve and Curious
Nag: asked at least 100 questions on a single day
2
20:49
@Takkat Oh, that's interesting . . . Maybe I should go for this one, become as inquisitive as @ParanoidPanda :D
@Serg our golden panda is one of the few Socratics
46 of 100 on that one here... >.>
lol
but then, I usually google before I hit that ask question button
well... 15 of my gold badges came from asking (but I only asked 41 questions).
21:00
1 and 51 respectively
user136984
I am going to start writing a philosophical blog that non of you are going to be able to find. >:D
@ParanoidPanda Man, that is deep! :)
@ParanoidPanda what's the point of writing a blog if no-one is reading it Oo
And that's how I reach 30k , ladies and gentlemen . . .
@Serg \o/ Grats!!! ;)
Yaaay, partaay \ (^0^) / @Takkat thanks
21:05
Good job. I started strong, and my rep is only accumulating interest at this point. 30 will happen automatically over time assuming I don't mess up horribly in chat or something.
@A.B. this is the one i wanted to publish
@hbdgaf yeah, i probably will take a break from AU and just be collecting interest ,too, but I want to come back later. I want to learn a bit more and come back stronger , so to speak
user136984
@Serg Well, people will be able to find it, easily I hope, just non of you will be able to trace it back to me... :D
user136984
And hopefully won't find through me...
@ParanoidPanda what about your mathematics blog ?
user136984
@Serg: What about it?
21:10
@ParanoidPanda you still active there ?
user136984
@Serg: I haven't been for a while, but I have some plans for some new entries there so they should be published soon...
If anyone wants a few sarcastic OReilly cover pictures to drop in to conversation at opportune times here
I should write a blog too. Problem is I don't know what to write about . . . And I am not quite sure if my writings can attract people
user136984
@Serg You should write about life, the universe and everything! ;D
@Serg Fix/work around a bug from a mailing list and blog about it.
user136984
21:18
As I am doing, right now! In a draft! :D
@hbdgaf heh , that would be awesome, if only my skills were good enough to fix bugs
sup
If the line is empty, then read() returns with zero, and that is interpreted as "end of file"
@Serg Blogged a thing for some company about deploying w3af-gui on OSX based on a bug report thread from the mailing list. It was a workaround deployment in docker instead of fixing the bug though. The bug was the fault of Gtk2/X11 borderless window bug in Quartz. Don't have to fix the bug necessarily.
21:21
Why doesn't it exit when I enter nothing and press enter?
As stated in the answer the line is empty.
@AbhishekBhatia because it's not the correct answer
cat should exit not because there's nothing on the line , but because stdin closed
user139252
@Zacharee1 @Fabby all is okay, don't worry about your sites. I'm getting things handled.
That happens when read command inside the program fails to read something new
Ctrl + D sends a special escape sequence that closes the stdin, so read command inside progam will fail to read more stuff
therefore cat will exit
And technically, when you hit enter, the program still receives a newline character
\n
so line is not really empty
@TheBrownOne kk what was happening?
user136984
Long day...
user136984
21:36
Goodnight! :)
@ParanoidPanda @Fabby's not here, so 'Pumpkin!'
Well . . . I'm pretty sure anything launched into space will be hard to find . . .
I should make a script that loops over 50 shades of gray in the launcher
XD
user139252
@Zacharee1 Little bit of a huge financial emergency due to the reimbursement of my very expensive tuition being delayed by a week... but I'm working things out.
user139252
21:54
I got a friend to cover my upcoming bills this week since I can repay him in less than two weeks, so things will be okay
Hi
Any mods on?
doesn't seem like
What do you need @SQuirel ?
I got banned from asking questions when I merged my accounts...
@Seth ^
22:17
Does anybody happen to quickly know where logs related to displays are? I'm trying to troubleshoot a problem where when I plug a secondary monitor into my laptop both monitors go blank until I unplug it (yes nvidia drivers are installed).
All the logs for X server are in /var/log/ folder, named /var/log/Xorg.n.log , where n could be number form 0 to whatever. There is also /var/log/lightdm/ folder . You can look through there @aman207
@Serg Thanks, I'll check it out!
user139252
@Serg how are classes going?
@TheBrownOne I dropped control systems class - will be retaking that in fall. Exam on Tuesday in Computer Organization, so will be preparing over today's evening and tomorrow. I can't prep on monday because it's too distracting at work.
The computer science 2 class in python goes quite alright, i'd say
@SQuirel the only help we can give you is what is outlined here: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/86997/…
user139252
22:42
@Serg that's good! Good luck on that test!
Thanks

Q: How to troubleshoot and fix vnc connectivity issue with ubuntu 14.04 virtual machine

user3326293I have a remote Ubuntu machine, which I decided to use VNC to connect to. I followed the instructions. The Ubuntu machine is a VM with just a root account at the moment, and I think my problem is that I need to create a user account. Here is what I have: When I started the VNC server for the fi...

OK, time to clock out and go home
23:07
@Seth I haven't answered or asked a question since February 26. And the answer I gave last was up voted twice. Both of my accounts were able to ask questions before the merge. But after I merged them I'm not able to ask questions any more.
23:34
@SQuirel There's nothing I can do, the system is entirely automated. You need to improve existing questions or provide some more good answers..
23:46
@Seth How many questions are on askubuntu.com?
@SQuirel over 200,000.
Well considering there's over 200,000 questions about the same topic there's going to be some similar questions...
Why should a user be punished for "duplicate" questions?
because we have accidentally bought so much tar and feather, we literally don't know what to do with them
@SQuirel because you are wasting people's time. You make them do the searching for you. A duplicate here and there isn't a big deal (I have them too), but if you are being blocked by the system then you have more than "a few".
you have 2 duplicates, 1 closed question and ~8 deleted questions.
First off I only started using ubuntu in November 2014
The questions were legit newbie questions...
I could ask questions on both accounts before I merged them
23:56
it has nothing to do with how much you know about ubuntu, and everything to do with how much time you are willing to put into asking good questions.
For example:

Q: Record a linux terminal

SQuirelis it possible to record a linux terminal and save it as an mp4? I've tried using a few screen recorders, but they save in bad quality or take up too much system resources... This in NOT duplicate of How to record the terminal on a server? None of those programs will let you save as a video f...

Yes and i've never been able to record a linux terminal yet!
So I gave up
I wanted to save it as an mp4...
not a gif or some weird unusable format...
Now that's probably not a duplicate, but if I reopened it I would probably end up closing it as unclear or at least downvoting. You want to "record a terminal to an MP4", okay that's relatively clear.. But then you say "the things I've tried either have bad quality or take up too many resources", but you don't tell us what you've tried, anything about your quality cutoff, what you consider "too many resources" or anything.
And the duplicate answer was from 3 years ago...
All we can do is slap random guesses on the post and hope something happens to meet your unwritten requirements.
I've tried all the screen recorders I could find
23:59
This stupid WiDi thing
I guess it's time to ask on SuperUser
