Good morning!

hallo
I'm back(ish) on my computer
Accidentally installed Single Language, so I need to reinstall

Well, that’s probably one of the best things about C. I would argue that when you start out, using the kernel, is one of the best ways to learn. It really doesn’t matter that much. It was recommend to my Linux development teacher, he recommended this to us, I’m recommending it to OP. He can choose which ever one he wants. — Andrew Kralovec 3 mins ago

@TheBrownOne Good afternoon! :-)

Where do weirdos like that come from?
Kernel programming for learning C. Sheesh.

@muru I'm not supposed to understand that right?

4:02 PM
@muru :D

@Zacharee1 the guy learnt C doing kernel programming. He's above us mere mortals.

@muru I would file that under the "Swim or you'll drown!" method of teaching!

@Fabby swim or you'll be eaten by the Giant Squid, more like. :D

@muru :D Kraken :D

4:06 PM
@Fabby Kraken is an octopus
But created because of squid sightings

@Zacharee1 The Kraken is a mythological creature resembling a whale, a crab and an octopus...

Q: How to force correct name for .desktop file

Matthew SmithI'm developing a Qt application using CMake, and am trying to make it difficult to open more than one copy of the app at the same time (as with Mac application packages -- you have to call the executable by name rather than just open the package). The app is called QTM, and to achieve this I've r...

@Zacharee1 Thanks... Now giving you back some rep...

I finished!

what are you working on?

user139252
I made Python command line utilities for adding new hosted clients, disabling their sites if they don't pay, and re-enabling them after payment is received.

oh neat

@Mateo he also encrypts client data and sends them emails about him being a nigerian prince >:-DD

I was looking into some competition in my area.

@TheBrownOne Prank Fabby with it, he hates that stuff ;)

@ByteCommander CC: -----^
I really dislike people doing that!
@kos Huh?

@TheBrownOne It's ugly as hell! You call those jokers competition??? :O
;-)
I would call that "Marketing"! :D :D :D

6:14 PM
@Fabby :P

I've got noscript installed: me not hearing anything!

kos
@Fabby Done

@TheBrownOne What's the web page they receive when they stop paying?
(link?)
@kos Thanks! :-)

kos
@Fabby At your service.

@kos BTW: I finally got an answer form the mods on the merge/duplicate.
They are both separate questions and need to remain so. (One is about "should I double my SWAP, whereas the other one is about how much swap should I use?"

kos
6:21 PM
@Fabby Looks right. It's very specific to 16GB / 32GB. I shouldn't have suggested you to ask for a merge.

@Fabby we are tied at 4 >:-D

@kos Meh, now I know what it is and does!
@Rinzwind huh?

kos
This would be cool. I mean, not a chance I'd leave it turned on, but pretty cool:

Q: Is it possible to use the dancing lights trick?

UbuntuloverOn Windows, you can make a Visual Basic script to make your keyboard lights blink, but is this possible on Ubuntu? Furthermore, would I be able to hack all my hardware?

@Fabby see starred messages :=)
@kos too easy

@Rinzwind :D :D :D

6:26 PM
@Fabby I assumed people that want you to be gone would vote for me. but people probably voted on both >:-D

kos
@Rinzwind Yeah probably. Can't test though (no backlit keyboard :'()

@Rinzwind Ah! :-)

but it is just a keypress on my system. fn_f4 turns it on fn+f3 turns it off. No bloody need for a script like in windows :-X

kos
@Rinzwind It'd be cool to script it to make it blink with different rates at different intervals
@Rinzwind I think they want them to blink in some sort of "disco" fashion, don't they?

6:30 PM
@kos Ill let @JacobVlijm handle this one >:-D
and for disco lights you need colors :=D

@Rinzwind And he'll come up with something that blinks the WiFi, volume, play, ... LEDs as well!

kos
@Rinzwind We can work on that :D

@Fabby he will make the notebook jump like a lowrider :=D

kos
Ah but aren't they asking about the lights behind the keys on backlit keyboards?

@TheBrownOne MY EYES ;_;
and ears.

kos
6:37 PM
@Seth The song starts growing on you after a while.

@kos I disagree there :=D

kos
@Rinzwind Lol, it was trying to be ironic. :P
Probably one of the most hateable song I've heard.

@kos then you need to use the irony smilie

kos
@Rinzwind Which is?

sarcastic?

Q: Is there an emoticon to express irony?

Dimitri C.I use irony rather often, but in written texts such as email I'm often afraid that it might be misinterpreted by the reader. Therefore I'd like to use an emoticon to make the irony explicit, but I'm not sure which one is most often used for this purpose. Which one would be most suited?

kos
@jokerdino Ironic = incorrect? It didn't sound well in fact.

@kos I think sarcasm is a special case of irony.
Sarcasm is when you say something but you mean the exact opposite.

@jokerdino it is.

Like when I say Rinzwind is awesome.

@jokerdino no that is the truth. can't be sarcasm

6:44 PM
:P

my reputation on AU proves I am awesome >:-D
oh sarcasm seems to be :S

kos
@jokerdino Yeah, specifically I meant sarcastic. :D
@Rinzwind You're awesome ⸮
:P

@kos I know :=D

@Fabby If they don't pay, their URL redirects to mine

user139252
@Fabby so, try going to your website now

7:02 PM
@Zacharee1 So apparently SUSE is pronounced "sooo-suh", not "sooo-say".

@Seth I always said Soos

user139252
Not sooos?

But yeah it's Soosuh

sooose

user139252
Like, Dr. Seus?

7:04 PM
@TheBrownOne soosuh

German OS so German pronouncation ;)

@Rinzwind OHHHHHH
THAT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE

@Zacharee1 oh you did not know that? :D

Q: Is it useful to close ancient questions as too broad?

guntbertIn review I came upon several ancient questions (several years old) that were flagged as "too broad" - am I right in thinking this is just a waste of time/reviews and hence skipping them? for instance https://askubuntu.com/review/close/534275 https://askubuntu.com/review/close/533658 https://a...

8:00 PM
@TheBrownOne copyright and then put the source on-line? >:-D why not GPL it
his answer uses off topic versions of Ubuntu :D

kos
@ParanoidPanda Why did you delete this one? askubuntu.com/q/742811/380067

@kos it was closed by muru as a dupe

kos
@Rinzwind Ah right. There's something wrong with me today, I see things.

8:16 PM
@kos deleted? I can still see it?

user136984
@kos: It's not deleted...

@ParanoidPanda by the way, I'm sorry for the way I behaved the last time.

@muru well since the OP agreed it was a dupe I'm cool. (re: meta)
I was going to say one was about a certain breed of highly upvoted questions and one was about run of the mill stuff it was probably worth treating different but meh.

@muru he is a panda. he is used to it :=D

kos
@muru I was writing an answer and saw the orange bar. There were no close votes so I assumed it had been deleted. Failures.
@ParanoidPanda ^^

8:18 PM
@kos Post you answer to the other Q :D

@kos if the answer draft isn't gone, post on the other q.

user136984
@muru It's fine. :)

@TheBrownOne Trying...

@Seth yes, the whole lock business can't be applied to this one.

(it still works as expected)

kos
8:19 PM
@Seth @muru Whoa! Yes, I was just about to do that

I would appreciate it if people would spend more time on the stuff coming in now vs taking out last years garbage.. That only continues the cycle.

@Seth It's German in origin, so it's more like süse...

If we can ever get to a point where we handle every questions that comes in, then we can take care of old stuff.
@Fabby I'm just going off how people pronounced it at SUSECon and in their own music videos..

@TheBrownOne Cool! All automated...
@Rinzwind Woohoo! He should drop by in chat.

Q: How to set Japanese as input source?

Paranoid PandaI am trying to learn Japanese, and I thought that as a part of this it would be good if my computer allowed me to type in Japanese, however after installing the Japanese language packs and setting my Input Sources section to also have Japanese, when I switch to Japanese typing, unlike with other ...

@kos ParanoidPanda asked for it to be duped himself.
@muru Everyone is allowed to have a bad dat every now and then and trust me: You've got less bad days then @ParanoidPanda himself! :D

@Fabby I've been having more bad days recently. Got into two comment-snark threads this week. :/

@Seth I mostly work the review queues nowadays...
@Rinzwind I left a comment for him to drop by in chat...

daring :D

8:28 PM
@Rinzwind I'm old enough to remember that. I used to be a NCSA...
@ParanoidPanda Ask @Serg: he speaks Japanese if I'm not mistaken.
@muru Good! From this day forward, I know you're not a god and will officially stop calling you Mighty God Muru!
;-)
@Rinzwind Meh: he's just a human being and his shit is as brown as ours...

@Fabby when did you last call me that, btw? :P

@muru A year or so?
@Seth LOL (and I mean it: I got some funny looks)

:D

user139252
@Rinzwind I have a general GPL in my GitHub repo

user139252
@Fabby I re-enabled since you didn't respond :P

8:35 PM
@TheBrownOne I was driving from mum back to Angie.

@Fabby you forgot to delete the comment 5 minutes ago

@Rinzwind I was just on that page to delete it!

sure that is what they all say :+)

(when I came back because I got pinged by the Brown one!
he was last seen 33 minutes ago
I should add an RSS feed to his answers below yours...

HIS answer is not an answer to the question :=D

user139252
8:37 PM
@Fabby I've "suspended" you again, check your site.

@Fabby eh? rss feed?

@TheBrownOne Yes!

user139252
Redirects to me...

user139252
then enabled again

user139252
And your site is back!

8:42 PM
Cool, cool, cool!
:-)

@Fabby ahum, points to question posted at 21:36-ish

@Rinzwind I decided to add another comment...

lol

(so i technically deleted the self-destruct one!)

nice stab :D
To all: if Fabby disappears to never come back we know why

So whenever I connect to a Wifi network, I lose my cellular data connection.
(This is on my N6 with Lollipop.)
Any ideas?

Why aren't you using marshmallow?

I am dual-booting Marshmallow and Lollipop on this phone. I need Lollipop for an app that doesn't work with a rooted Marshmallow install.
(It's complicated :P)

ah.

To clarify, I can still make calls but the data stops working.

@Nathan: How is your SE chat script going by the way? :)

user136984
It still won't work for me... :(

Lemme restart it.
@ParanoidPanda there, back up again.

user136984
@Nathan: Nope, still not working... :(

user136984
It barely even shows the little icons any more...

user136984
Do you think there could be any incompatibilities with my browser or something?

9:04 PM
It's working for me. Try reloading the page?

user136984
@Nathan: Now not even the settings link is showing...

What have you changed since it last worked?

user136984
Nothing...

user136984
It's been on and off though for the last few months...

I have no idea then.

9:18 PM
hello all! hope everyone is doing alright today
quick question: using the
sudo ls -lha /path/
command. what exactly does that do ?
cause I was trying to look through a non-empty directory and see what all is in there before a rm -f

man ls

when I did this on my desired path, I got about 6 lines of drwxrzr/ -rw-r-r with numbers, my home name, bites, and then dates that go along with those logs.. what might those be. an explination would be appreciated. I know there is nothing I really need in there, im just trying to understand the command, mainly the -lha flag
is it possible that those dates reflect the original dates when the file was created and last edited?

offline :(
all sites I know that use cloudfare offline :P hmm

any explanation of -lha flag would be appreciated, cause I searched the net for info, found every other flag but that particular one.

kos
9:37 PM
@shaggy They're three different options: -l sorts the output in a list, -h shows the items' sizes in a human-readable format and -a includes hidden files in the output. When you have a doubt about a command or its options you can check its man page (man ls).

@NathanOsman That's a feature: Why would you use up your $$$ data plan when you can connect to WiFi?
(Isn't that a setting?)

@Fabby Because I may be connected to a WiFi network that doesn't provide Internet.

@kos ahh thats what @chili555 was saying. I apologize for my ignorance. thanks for the help/info

It's not working for me nor Bytecommander any more neither.
@NathanOsman Well... is there a log file somewhere?

kos
@shaggy No problem!

9:44 PM
Through which service would users gain access to the "app"? HTTP? FTP? WebDav? SSH? NFS? CIFS? RDP? SMTP/POP3? Carrying pidgeons? — David Foerster 23 mins ago
Never underestimate the power of pigeon-post-net.

@chili555 Hey! It's alive! Alive!

kos
Lol. If I had a choice, I would go for the last one.

@muru hey in Africa carrier pigeons carry a 2Gb usb stick quicker over 100 miles then you can download the same 2Gb
8

but are they USB 3?

Please disable your phone’s Smart Network Switch. When this is ON, this feature will try to find the most favorable connection for the device, automatically switching you either to a compatible Wi-Fi or mobile data network. In theory, this advanced setting is designed to preserve consistent internet connection but we know that it doesn’t always work that way. Here are the steps on how to disable it:

Go to Settings.
Tap Wi-Fi.
Tap the menu icon located on the bottom-left hand side of the screen.
@Rinzwind That was back in 2009. Things have improved since then. (and it was 4GB)
@Seth Back in 2009? USB2... --^
(why do I bother cramming all that bullcrap into my brain?)

9:53 PM
lol
when I type x="some text with a bang!" in languages other than bash I always do a double take in case I need to use single quotes xD

What's a "double take"?

@Fabby: Thanks. That's a great article! :-D askubuntu.com/questions/742813/…

@Fabby I finish and begin to move on, then stop and backup and look at it again.

"By collecting flocks of pigeons in dense clusters, Google is able to process search queries at speeds superior to traditional search engines, which typically rely on birds of prey, brooding hens or slow-moving waterfowl to do their relevance rankings."

9:55 PM
@DavidFoerster Yeah, I had to fight to create a new corporate policy at some huge German multinational because of this issue, so I remember very well!
@Seth I tried googling that, but the first 10 links gave me nothing.

:D

@DavidFoerster OK, to be completely honest, it was this problem
;-)

How are you doing by the way? I feel like a 2nd David Förster: working the review queues is what I do most and while reviewing the "first post" queue and finding a decently phrased question is the only time I still answer... @DavidFoerster
@Rinzwind Unclear!

@kos that man command will come in very useful. one issue Im having is not being able to delete a .png file
im in the right pathway, parent directory.. its a screen shot on my Desktop

10:00 PM
@shaggy provide the actual command and the error message it shows

but when I go to sudo rm' it, it tab completes so i know the file is there and its spelled right. but when I hit enter it says no such file/directory

@shaggy (copy-paste the text here in chat, no screen shots, please)

@Rinzwind $ sudo rm -r /screenshot.png

(including the output)

@shaggy the / is the problem

kos
10:02 PM
^^

@shaggy and what is the output to pwd?

that points to the root of the system
@Fabby no need >:-D

@Fabby I'm trying to spend more time on Code Review and learn more of my actual profession.

@Fabby it doesn't prompt for the pass like it normally does
@Rinzwind will provide the copy and paste, one sec

@shaggy a couple of things: 1. do NOT use sudo if it is not needed (if the file is owned by you it never is ). 2. the / in front of the file name makes it search the file at / (so at the root) 3. if the file is on the Desktop the command willl be rm ~/Desktop/screenshot.png

10:05 PM
And my name is actually spelled "Foerster" btw. That's not just an artefact of transliteration to basic Latin.

$ ls
Firefox Screen Shot 2016-02-14 at 20.48.12.png
Google Chrome Screen Shot 2016-02-14 at 20.48.26.png
$ sudo rm -rf Screen\ Shot\ 2016-02-14\ at\ 20.48.26.png
it prompts me for the password this time, and act as tho it completes the command, but the file/ screenshot is still present on my desktop

@Rinzwind: The deleting user also needs write permissions on the directory containing the file to delete.

$ ls
Firefox Screen Shot 2016-02-14 at 20.48.12.png
Google Chrome Screen Shot 2016-02-14 at 20.48.26.png
$ rm -rf Screen Shot 2016-02-14 at 20.48.12.png

@DavidFoerster :-)

acts as though the command is being processed. but nothing actually happens to the file. the screen shot is still there

10:11 PM
@DavidFoerster OK!
(I remember mainframes where öü,... HAD to be transliterated...
@shaggy that is normal.
@shaggy that is not normal.
@shaggy what is the output to:

kos
Does it really autocomplete to that? It should autocomplete to `rm -rf Screen\ Shot\ 2016-02-14\ at\ 20.48.12.png
`

@Fabby yeah thats what i'm saying. could it be possible that i'm using bash on OSX

@shaggy ll Screen\ Shot\ 2016-02-14\ at\ 20.48.26.png

kos
OS X?

@Fabby I don't really mind, but I don't want you to go through the hassle of using your compose key or something when it's completely superfluous. ;-]

10:13 PM
@shaggy You're not on Ubuntu?
meh,; I've got a Belgian keyboard: we can type anything!

@kos not atm, but its still the same kernel. i don't see why I would have problems just because its OS X.

@shaggy You're in the wrong chat room...

I have removed files like before with no issues, but for some reason these screen shots wont go away

ugh, that must suck on the amount of easily reachable special characters. i got a UK layout for that very reason.

Theis is Ask Ubuntu...

10:15 PM
im aware of that

@DavidFoerster Well, for programming it's not the best there is!

kos
@shaggy It's not the same kernel, it's the same shell. It should autocomplete to rm -rf Screen\ Shot\ 2016-02-14\ at\ 20.48.12.png. Try rm -rf Screen\ Shot\ 2016-02-14\ at\ 20.48.12.png

Not even the same version of the shell though.

@Fabby nice ninja-edit!
i can't the see the "ö" though.

kos
Yeah likely. However auto-completion shouldn't fail like that.

10:17 PM
@shaggy I used to work for Apple as a supplier: I don't touch anything that Apple made since the good Steve left the company, so I'm bailing...
@DavidFoerster "and then o.

10:18 PM
@Fabby I can't find the "smart" option.

@NathanOsman Hrmpf....
Yeah, got it that was a reply to me...
lemme look if there is another way...

@Fabby I hear you all my older mac machines lasted forever and never had issues, since then I've started to have graphics crashes and KPs.. and its just not as solid as they used to be, anyways if you ask such things on the apple chat, i don't think there would be as quick or as solid of a feed back
I appreciate everyone here for their input

@shaggy It'd be appreciated next time if you disclose the OSX part earlier though ;)
We'll usually still try to help if we can, but it prevents us from wasting time troubleshooting in the wrong areas.

and because of the above and other numerous issues I have been making the switch over to ubuntu. I just happen to be on my Mac machine atm, and had a quick question.. I sincerely apologies for my underhandedness, and truely value and love this community
I'll be back soon enough all ubuntu related I can assure you :P :P :P
everyone have a great day. take care
@Seth totally understand, thats my bad

np! :)

kos
10:24 PM
@shaggy You too

@NathanOsman Sorry: out of ideas....

Thanks anyway.

@NathanOsman Isn't the correct idiom "Thanks for nothing?" ;-)
(disclosure: I know what it really means)
@NathanOsman I've removed the chat helper add-on...
Now restarting FF and then reinstalling...
Now restarting FF and then reinstalling...

Where should I download it again???

When are they going to release Firefox 45 by the way? I've already got it on Xenial, but not on Wily...

user136984
10:57 PM
I think FF 45 has actually already been released, they just haven't put it into the repositories yet for Wily...

@ParanoidPanda 8/3/2016
then some packaging, testing, ... give or take a few weeks: by the end of this month is my guesstimate.

user136984
@Fabby: Oh, then Xenial must receive the Beta channel version or something...

@ParanoidPanda Duh?

user136984
You know, Xenial is really really bugy... But I'm not sure I have the time to report all the bugs I find...

user136984
Like literally, the moment I find one bug, if I step a little further, there's another one already! I even found one in Apport when reporting the first! :D

11:06 PM
@ParanoidPanda I already have it in Trusty: paste.ubuntu.com/15316124

@ParanoidPanda Oh! Please do!
I'm waiting for the release as my system is getting unstable and I need to re-install soon.
@DavidFoerster huh?
I'm on trusty too and still on 44.2

@Fabby I get it through Mozilla Security PPA
see the pastie

@DavidFoerster Yeah! Just noticed!
:P :P :P

alright. that's it for me tonight.
see y'all!

user136984
@Fabby Well, I prefer to work as a developer than a tester so I won't do any more testing of it, but I will report the 3 bugs I found (one of which is a blocker)... :)

11:17 PM
@DavidFoerster Gute Nacht!

user136984
I suppose though I could see if I could work on some fixes for the bugs though... Now that's an idea!

@ParanoidPanda Thank you for making 16.04 a better experience for ME! :D
I need another drink!
