Q: How to configure RAID 1 from Recovery Mode?

L. SánchezI have a server is composed from two HDD 1500 GB SATA (/dev/sda and /dev/sdb), one of this have failed and server is in recovery mode. I want to fix it, first I made a backup of the important information. Then I changed the hard disk that failed. I don't know how to start. I need to know how to ...

user139252
Don't share anything on the iCloud
@TheBrownOne or, don't put anything on iCloud in the public view
user139252
00:13
If you grant anybody else permission to view something you upload, Apple can use it.
@TheBrownOne no, that's not the legal interpretation
So Apple is fighting against putting a security backdoor in their software, but atomatically takes ownership of stuff you upload to iCloud?
oh wait, wow
really
@Zacharee1 no only if you share it with others
damn
@ThomasW. still
It's kind of the same thing
@Zacharee1 key points being: areas of the Service that are accessible by the public or other users with whom you consent to share such Content
user139252
00:13
or other users with whom you consent to share such Content
@TheBrownOne too slow, read backwards
and process words faster
@ThomasW. A lot of stuff people put on iCloud they make public
whelp, Microsoft updates suck ass
@ThomasW. REALLY? I HADNT NOTICED
@Zacharee1 A large number of others put it in private areas
@Zacharee1 reinstall of a VM - taking forever in updating time
00:15
@ThomasW. It's still not good
@ThomasW. My computer woke up overnight, rebooted to install a new build of Windows, booted into deepin, and I didn't notice until I had to use it in class to write an essay.
The update took over an hour
And there was no way to stop it
Whose idea was it to force auto updating?
user139252
Bob Newhart's.
00:31
@Zacharee1 Yes, that's Windows 10
@Zacharee1 blame Microsoft, but im' not even there yet - fresh Win7 :p
in the mean time, lol at someone using 'r' to mount as readonly, not thinking to bother reading manpages or help docs
everyone can +1 me now :)
@ThomasW. Already did :)
@Mateo Whole lotta grün
@Zacharee1 did I mention that Dell's USB 3.0 drivers didn't actually contain a USB 3.0 driver in them?
@ThomasW. wat
and I had to spend three hours on the phone with Dell to get them to remote in and run the actual installer
00:37
@Mateo since when does MATE have a launcher?
which then put the correct drivers on Win7
lol
That's very un-Dell-like
@Zacharee1 read my link ;)
@Zacharee1 i think they broke their things, but yes. they solved it though
@Mateo A "top menu?"
00:44
lol
lol, they were probably just syncing with plain ubuntu - then adding stuff back in
that link sure does make it sound as if they jumped ship to unity ;P
@Mateo which link?
00:45
There's a Mutiny coming! Yes, that is a top menu. Yes, this is Ubuntu MATE. See you Thursday for the Beta 1 release! https://t.co/PVmvkHj8fc
yay, it oneboxed
@Mateo Wow! I like that.
If that works similar to Unity I'll switch.
or maybe they themed a launcher and made a lightweight alternative?
I'm pretty sure that's what they did.
or better yet - remade unity-2d-launcher! (and updated/fixed)
oh, look towards the bottom left - you can see the workspaces
so their launcher
also - someone please make this type of thing possible integrated into ubuntu:
where'd that come from?
00:59
it's an old windows program
ah. hmm.
thus the button only popups on wine programs
but it is so awesome
I was gonna say, that looks like an ubuntu theme ;p
what's the program?
think of it like a partial minimize
then bam, you have a program kindof off to the side, but still visible
reminds me of the android app view. So, what's the program called?
01:03
"Madotate" was the name
it's really simple - they basically screen shot the window - and give you that
oh dear, how worse can they get - or is the new owner trying to salvage
@Mateo read it
@Mateo trying to salvage I believe.
They bought Slashdot too.
01:14
oh ok... I'll click on a sourceforge link - It might be ok since I have ad block on...
01:37
@Mateo So, how'd your adventure go?
skepticism
and a bit of optimism
Adblock only said one ad was blocked, so that seems to be an improvement judging from what you said
remember the the people complaining on AU a while back that the CD burner that ubuntu recommended for windows was malware?
01:39
no
yeah... so they were fooled by the ad's on sourceforge...
lol
Seems better now

Can someone tell me why Wubi still exists if it's so bad?
@Zacharee1 because 14.04 is still supported?
because 12.04 is still supported. Wubi was declared deprecated with 13.10.
Ah
But why does it exist in newer versions of Ubuntu?
because it still kinda works.
at least with legacy BIOS.
I just do not find that comic amusing.
it's just not funny..
:/
Did you read from the very first comics?
I thought you of all people would like cynical humor @Seth :p
02:17
Garfield elicits no emotion from me whatsoever.
For whatever reason.
You've moved beyond Davis's cynicism. You've become..... THE ULTIMATE CYNICIST
(I MADE THAT WORD UP FOR LACK OF A NOUN)
How about that one?
This one's relevant to your feelings on the G5 :P
@Zacharee1 that one made me smile a little.
kos
kos
@Zacharee1 This one made me grin, but I think it's because it caught me off guard.
There are some good ones
O_o
I think this one's relatable:

Hi I need some help! After installing vulkan , i ran vulkaninfo which gives me the message failed with VK_ERROR_INCOMPATIBLE_DRIVER . Does this mean that my graphic card is not supported by vulkan???
09:39
@kashish No idea. I suggest you post a question on the site, inlcuding the exact command you ran and their error messages as well as your graphics card and what driver you using for it.
@terdon can't post the question... :'( askubuntu.com/help/question-bans. Thanks for reply :)
@kashish Well, you can try on Unix & Linux or even Super User. Just make sure to include enough information to make the question answerable.
@terdon Thanks. I'll do it.

@cl-netbox Phone call finished, but now they expect me to reply to an in-depth assessment within the hour!

A very neglected question:

Q: Forcing Genymotion network traffic to pass through Ubuntu proxy settings

DummyBeginnerOn a Genymotion virtual device (Android 6.0.0 API 23) I need it to follow the network proxy rules of Ubuntu which are set in Settings --> Network --> Network proxy. I tried on both enabled "apply system wide" and without that, but have not met the purpose. Since Genymotion uses VirtualBox to run...

@DummyBeginner You need an expert on: Genymotion, Ubuntu and Android to help you with that...
so not neglected, just hard to find...
(E.G. I can't help you...)
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW Thanks for your attention however, it was a morale :)

Whats the difference between adding scripts in the /etc/cron.daily/ or editing in your script in crontab(-e)
@geotavros hey
can you run lsusb again. just post the line for your device
@reversiblean usb-devices command shows now Driver=usb-storage for Huawei
yup. your device is detected as a storage device. you should switch it
@reversiblean how?
@reversiblean lsusb shows Bus 001 Device 006: ID 12d1:1505 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. E398 LTE/UMTS/GSM Modem/Networkcard
14:13
ls /etc/usb_modeswitch.d/
12d1:1505
sudo usb_modeswitch -I -c /etc/usb_modeswitch.d/12d1:1505 -R
try this
what does this do?
It's how you switch the mode
No default vendor/product ID given. Abort
14:19
@blade19899 none.
;-)
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW Should have said that sooner, before I asked this on U&L...
@blade19899 Ah, security-wise I don't know.
From a usability perspective: they're just 2 different ways of accomplishing the same...
@thebluesquirel Apparently you didn't read this
Not quite, there's also a slightly different format. Your crontabs are always run by you but you can choose what user will execute them in /etc/cron*. @blade19899
Could you edit your question and explain what you're worried about. What kind of security implications are you thinking of?
14:25
@Seth I agree...
@hbdgaf Nah! Doesn't look like me at all!
;-)
@terdon Edited.
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW : what about my fingers ... ? :)
@hbdgaf Not true. >:-) But I know as a PM that if one person can install one server in one day, waiting for 7 hours total of that day and actually working 5 minutes every hour, he can install 7 as well in one day and 8 if he's lucky.
@cl-netbox :/ I don't get it...
@blade19899 Thanks. So, what you really want is a crontab that is only visible to root? Does it need to be run as a regular user or can it be run as root?
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW Did you get the thing done in time ? Can I now uncross my fingers ? they hurt ... a little bit ... :)
14:31
@cl-netbox :D :D :D They sent me a screenshot! :(
I had to type everything because they were too lazy to copy-paste as text (or too afraid of giving me too much background info)
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW ??? ... :)
Hi @Seth ! :)
@cl-netbox So, please uncross!
@terdon I 'm always logged in as root in this particular server. I just need to know who/what/when about cron, so that I can choose wisely, how to implement cron jobs.
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW uuuhhh ... nice ... but what is this screenshot reply about ? Is this a joke like it could have been from a person I knew that once called himself Fabby ?
@blade19899 Well, it very much depends on what user's crontab you're talking about. mention the fact that you're root in your question.
14:36
@cl-netbox :D Instead of sending me a link to somewhere or instead of copy-pasting text, the recruiter sent me a screen shot, so I had to type the text of the questions as well as the answers...
@terdon Done
(as the questions weren't even numbered) @cl-netbox
let me try to change back to Fabby.
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW Times are getting worse and worse and worse ... unbelievable !
Now, to continue on my Plan Of Action on how to update our (CentOS 6.6)servers. Anybody has experience with that?
@cl-netbox yeah... People just don't understand technology...
Display name may only be changed once every 30 days; you may change again on Mar 6 at 0:46
14:42
@blade19899 nope. we let them rot away :-D
@Rinzwind That's not an option here. xD
What kind of security sensitive stuff would you even be doing from a crontab anyway?
Why bother making the crontab secure? Just have the crontab load a script and make sure the script is only readable by root.
@terdon stating the obvious are we? :-P
I always put scripts in the /etc/cron.*/ folder. Never knew the difference between crontab and the cron folders. Thought I'll ask. Just in case.
@Rinzwind Somebody had to. Blade was asking which of the various crontabs is more secure, as in which is only readable by root.
14:45
ah
well
@blade19899 The format is completely different. The /etc/cron* stuff are scripts, run at specific times by cron where the time depends on the dir name and the contab -e ones are crontabs where you set the time and the command to be run.
@blade19899 cron is usually global tasks on a schedule. crontab is usually user tasks on a schedule. at least that's how i read "crontab is cron for individual users"
naaah
/etc/crontab is handy since you have 1 file for all tasks
@Seth @Florian Neither of your answers here are satisfactory, in my opinion.
I have a client with 500 users ... /etc/crontab has lines in there i would not like to copy to their own crontab :X
14:47
@Seth your answer pokes at the core of the issue and why it's failing, and gives a long and roundabout way to solve it. Florian's answer is more pointed but requires manual steps. I solve both,.
@Rinzwind Forgive me but /etc/crontab is for Root, not users. SHould only be used for system-level crontabs...
@Rinzwind fair enough. it just felt like the intention when allowing all users to schedule tasks.
@ThomasW. that's nice, but the OP still needs to edit the changlog, since they made changes. I'll remember that though for the times I haven't made changes but need to sign.
@ThomasW. nope. it is maintained by root where he can start script with the user as the one executing it
so it is not just for root ;-)
14:54
@terdon erm, I meant as to whom the crontab is targeted for, not 'what can it do'
i.e.
only root is supposed to use that
not others ;)
oh like that. sure :=D
Only root can, anyway.
and in most cases userspace crontabs can have similar results
@Seth If and only if they made changes; "I'm trying to build cairo with debuild." doesn't mean they made changes
they may be working off a source package and want to just produce the .deb binaries
(such as a Version Controlled repository of the Source package)
in which case they don't need to edit the changelog, but they need to tell it what key to sign with
there are cases where this is true
crap, i left my laptop charger at home >.<
noob! I have 2 chargers. 1 at home 1 at work :=)
1st thing I do with any notebook: order an extra battery and an extra charger _O-
@ThomasW. read the comments ;)
They're recompiling with different build flags.
@ThomasW. ouch. Hopefully it's not a weird brand specific one so you can borrow someone else's.
@Rinzwind hopefully the second one is more than 50 watts!
15:10
@Seth yeah right. 2 pple here both have Dells. Model number is what ... 1 digit off. Think they can exchange chargers? :-D
oh and this is a guess askubuntu.com/questions/738146/… _O- Hope I dont get burned :D
@blade19899 ok largerst /etc/crontab I could find has 284 lines
user139252
@Rinzwind I thought all Dells have the same charger these days?
user139252
The Dell Chromebooks and various laptops I have here at work all have the same
user139252
@Zacharee1 Update CloudFlare: 96.41.61.130
15:30
@Seth it's a Dell one - we have working chargers at my workplace at the University, and I'm trying to see if I can arrange to borrow one to get through classes.
if not, i'll be skipping a class to obtain my charger from home
which is really bad to do
15:52
My thoughts on the iPhone unlock debacle:
@Rinzwind Lol, don't think I'll be doing that much.
@hbdgaf hahaha

@Seth There was a story about dozens of phones waiting to be unlocked if Apple loses.
2
16:05
yeah. It's a disaster waiting to happen.
Honestly, I don't really care if they're forced to unlock the iPhone. I just don't want it to be under disingenuous pretenses. "We want all phones unlocked for all LE now". Okay, at least you're being honest. "Oh, and computers. Why don't we just ban encryption altogether." <-- nobody votes FOR that.
who was that
@hbdgaf I agree. I wouldn't mind if this specific iPhone is unlocked. I recognize that the government should be able to search most things with a warrent, but at this point they do it too recklessly.
(besides the fact that they have stopped asking for warrents, and that judges give them willy-nilly too)
@jokerdino hm?
@Seth deleted chat message before I clicked on spam. Nothing serious.
16:14
I saw.
And cursed a little under breath.
heh
personally, i hope mcaffee makes good on his offer and takes the whole problem out of the discussion.
I want to see him eat his shoe.
user139252
@Seth Me too.
user139252
I'm wondering, what type of shoe?
16:17
but maybe it would be better he unlocked it.
@TheBrownOne how about those Wal-Mart ones that feel like you're wearing plastic bottles?
user139252
Like, the shoe off of his foot? A brand new infant size Converse shoe? Crocs?
I would suspect that if he made the offer, they're sitting on an iphone unlock/0day.
Ooh, crocs. That'd be interesting.
@hbdgaf You're probably right.
I saw one on YouTube that allowed unlimited guesses, but only by hand.
(and that was iOS 8)
@Seth There were some German fellows that made a mechanical finger to handle that
lol
user139252
16:25
If you get unlimited retries, and you have to wait 5 seconds between attempts, it would only take 1 hour, 23 minutes, 20 seconds to crack it.
user139252
wait, oops, that was 1000, not 10000

Q: Files are being created in folder before fstab mount point is complete

TiberiusKirkThis is a new problem that started after an apt-get upgrade today. OS: Ubuntu 14.04 The LXD container hypervisor puts everything in /var/lib/lxd, but my / partition is a little tight so I bind the /var/lib/lxd folder to a larger volume in fstab. This has worked fine until today. All of a sudd...

if we're raw editing memory and tuning off the lockout, we're probably also turning off the 5 second stall
@hbdgaf yeah, should be a third party arangment - other group gets credit/blame for whatever happens - even if they "talk" with apple devs on how to procede. officially making the try to hack their own phones is bad either way for them

mc0eSo it seems that typing man git init into a bash prompt on an ubuntu 14.04 system does the same as man git-init, only I'm not quite sure how. techrepublic.com/article/the-truth-about-ubuntu-unity not bad, like the > ever use a search engine... enough said. part
@Mateo Well written article.
I am really tired of hearing all the Unity hate. I really dislike the GNOME 3 shell, but you don't see me spewing hate all over the place at Fedora and SUSE and the like because it's their default..
user139252
Having to use Unity on my new desktop at work, I'm getting use to it and I quite like it now.
