My brother has discovered stack exchange.
user139252
@James Is he available? :p
user139252
Wait, I should ask first... Younger out older
lol
good question to ask
he can't create an account
user139252
Wait, I should ask first... Younger or older?
(12)
he's going to turn 13 in a few weeks, so I showed him a 10K section of the site
user139252
01:08
Very very wrong of me xD
told him that if he signed up for an account, the special mod tools would alert me to a underage user and I'd have to suspend his account for an entire year.
user139252
Mean brother
*Awesome brother
user139252
So, I made a github today, added a repo for Python projects... But now I don't know what to upload D:
Start with anything!
user139252

I've got my polynomial multiplier on there
Literally, anything. I cleaned it up now, but I used to have dozens of little repos on github
@Rinzwind that's what they told my wife to get a husband for :)

Q: Ubuntu freezes on black screen prior to login page

CS-DS-ES-FSI am running Ubuntu on Virtual Box. I am new to Linux and Ubuntu so I apologize if this is a basic question. I've ran Ubuntu using Virtual Box before but it has been a few weeks. Now when I try to run Ubuntu I get past the point where "UBUNTU" is displayed on the screen and then the screen goes b...

user139252
@JacobVlijm that was a lot of dishes
01:34
Hello.
@TheBrownOne I don't remember sending you the invitation.
@Seth Blogs... well, that requires a lengthy explanation :D 2buntu runs the custom blog engine you linked too. It would be pretty difficult to strip out all of the "2buntu" branding, although not impossible. My personal blog is running off Jekyll and George's blog runs WordPress.
@NathanOsman "Nathan's Notepad"?
@NathanOsman We figured out it was Stefano.
Ah.
@Seth Yup, that's the Jekyll one.
Ah.
user139252
01:54
@NathanOsman we learned it was Stefano
Ah, okay.
user139252
If you want to track me now, my keybase Id is brownone
@TheBrownOne I don't know, can we trust you not to lose this key too? :P
I thought you were already tracking me...?
01:58
@NathanOsman yes, she's tracking you. Are you tracking here is the question.
user139252
Yes, I can be trusted now :p. I'm significantly less busy
lol
You know, I managed to export my keybase key and import it on another computer. Maybe I should do a writeup since it doesn't seem to be as clear as you'd think.
After all the NSA stuff, did they really have to use the term "tracking"...? :D
well, you can find me on seth's or nathan's list ;P
user139252
01:59
I have my paper key in my wallet now :p
user139252
@Mateo or mine. I'm tracking you as well
and probably pandas, if he doesn't get too paranoid and nuke the account :)
ah, ok. you found me :)
@Mateo did you see George's video?
did you do another board room one?
No, not yet.
I've got plans for the next two in the series.
02:01
it was funny :)
It was! I was just relived they didn't ask him to draw 7 perpendicular red lines with transparent ink.
I would send money for that.
user139252
@NathanOsman More videos!
The next one is going to have George coming back to give a PowerPoint presentation.
And the one after that, they will brainstorm TV commercials for their app.
02:04
Oh what, Windows NT?
Look, taylorswift is on keybase: keybase.io/taylorswift
Hold on.
keybase.io/swiftonsecurity sadly SwiftOnSecurity is not
to what?
02:06
http://swiftonsecurity.com
@James Did you even read the proof from my first link? ;)
That doesn't really prove what everyone thinks...
I could buy swiftongarbagecollection.com and claim the same thing.
@Seth Didn't see that, and i don't believe it. No Twitter verification.
good point. No twitter.
(And then I would only be appealing to city workers and Java programmers.)
02:07
And it points to a tumblr blog, which I doubt now too.
Tumblr is legit
But lolz, 251 trackers so it must be legit.
you forgot the sarcasm tag James.
Remember, that means 251 users of the site vouch for "her" identity.
/facepalm
yeah, kind of a fail there. This isn't a social network!!
02:08
Goes back to GPG key signing parties...
eww
> Then, in a whispered seduction of tones, “Your ancestors only envisaged a god to rule over them. Your generation did better.”
> Cortana examined her hands.
> “You built one.”
Yup. Seems legit. :no-sarcasm:

How do I add a folder in GitHub now...
on your computer and then push with git
02:24
@TheBrownOne You can add a folder's contents but Git doesn't track folders themselves.

@Mateo Thank you. I needed that right now :)
Also: ROTFL
@Mateo yup. Saw that the other day. We've all wanted to do that.
And Apple Music on Android... argh. As soon as one of the songs in the library gets corrupted somehow, it becomes impossible to play that song.

@MaartenWachters Lots of spam getting posted during the last few hours.
Intentional spam or just reposts and stuff?
Seems like beginners that didnt take the time to learn SO to me
I can't seem to find it on SO. Which part of the sshd_config makes it so it only allows root connections? (Users in group sudo)
08:14
@JacobVlijm fine Ill remove it >:-D
08:33
@Rinzwind what? The answer to the mkdir question :)
08:45
What setting in the ssh deamon do I need to change to allow rootonly connections?
Oli
Oli
@MaartenWachters What do you mean by that? Only allow the root account to login? That sounds like the very worst of worst practices.
Hmm. I have a group Sysadmins that need to SSH in my ubuntu server. Any other connections, like my developers, it needs to deny. All my sysadmins have root permissions though;
Oli
Oli
Oh okay, so they're not actually the root account, just people in a group. AllowGroups <group> will limit logins to just people in that group. You can use it multiple times to add another group.
2
Similarly AllowUsers will add single users. You can use both together.
When is ubuntu 14.04.4 gonna be available? I know it's supposed to be today, but when exactly?
Oli
Oli
But if you use either of these it will implicitly deny anybody else.
08:51
Hmmm. I don't see it in the SSH Deamon though. Can I just add it or will that cause trouble?
Oli
Oli
@MaartenWachters Yeah just add it. It's not in there because (as I say) it causes a deny-all-but-... override.
Thanks man. Been searching for a while now
Oli
Oli
(and just in case you didn't get my meaning, there aren't supposed to be <>s around the group, that was just an indication you're supposed to substitute <group> for your group name)
Haha no I get it ;)
Just to indicate it was a variable
Oli
Oli
Yeah. I normally wouldn't explain that, I just don't want to get your locked out of your own server ;)
08:54
It's just a vmbox

@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW I know you're an anti-JS purist, but do you enable it at least for the site? :)
@kos Here on AU? Yes...
But it also works without so I can look at the site before enabling it...
JS just gives me more jazzy functionality.
Zach's site originally posted a warning saying that he wasn't showing anything because cookies and JS were disabled.
I told him that wasn't a good idea.
kos
kos
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW Definetly not. Turns off 90% of the audience.
:-)
He disagreed: it worked for all of his friends. (non-security-oriented)
kos
kos
10:12
Well 90% of those who don't enable either of the two is say ~10% of the total? I wouldn't lose them. :)
11:10
I have a problem with a script, it lists all the dir with a "Maildir", but it does display all the dirs, even the ones without a "Maildir" folder.
code:
> #!/bin/bash
echo "" > /tmp/mailboxes.txt

# Gives a total number of all the mailboxes:
echo "Total mailboxes:" >> /tmp/mailboxes.txt
find /home/*/imap/ -name *Maildir* -type d -not -empty | wc -l >> /tmp/mailboxes.txt
echo "" >> /tmp/mailboxes.txt

for i in `ls /home/`; do {

echo "$i" >> /tmp/mailboxes.txt
echo "" >> /tmp/mailboxes.txt

# Lists all the mail boxes, per user:
find /home/$i/imap/ -name *Maildir* -type d -not -empty | cat --number >> /tmp/mailboxes.txt
echo "" >> /tmp/mailboxes.txt
Hod do I make it display only the user with the *Maildir* folder?
Oli
Oli
That's because you parse ls for some reason, rather than using the last list you already generated. for i in `ls /home/`; do
kos
kos
@blade19899 Not sure if there are other problems, but for sure you'll need to quote the wildcards in the argument to -name: find /home/*/imap/ -name '*Maildir*' -type d -not -empty | wc -l >> /tmp/mailboxes.txt etc.
And yes, don't parse ls.
Oli
Oli
*Maildir* will work as long as there aren't any files or directories in the current path with Maildir in. Bash only expands when there's something to expand to (under default shopts)
Still, quoting is better.
kos
kos
Sure, my point is it's pointeless not to quote... it only adds the risk of breaking the command.
@kos That line is to count them, and below, the for i in is so I can display a username, before listing the maildirs
kos
kos
11:22
@blade19899 It looks like you're doing a number of steps that aren't really necessary... Do you just want print the list of directories named Maildir in /home/*/imap?
@kos This is how it looks like now:
Total mailboxes:
80

admin

user1

user2

user3

1 /home/user3/imap/somesite/somehandle/Maildir
2 /home/user3/imap/somesite/somehandle/Maildir
3 /home/user3/imap/somesite/somehandle/Maildir
4 /home/user3/imap/somesite/somehandle/Maildir

user4

user5

user6

1 /home/user6/imap/somesite/somehandle/Maildir
1 /home/user6/imap/somesite/somehandle/Maildir
1 /home/user6/imap/somesite/somehandle/Maildir
1 /home/user6/imap/somesite/somehandle/Maildir

user7

user8

user9

user10
And this is what I want:
Total mailboxes:
80

user3

1 /home/user3/imap/somesite/somehandle/Maildir
2 /home/user3/imap/somesite/somehandle/Maildir
3 /home/user3/imap/somesite/somehandle/Maildir
4 /home/user3/imap/somesite/somehandle/Maildir

user6

1 /home/user6/imap/somesite/somehandle/Maildir
2 /home/user6/imap/somesite/somehandle/Maildir
3 /home/user6/imap/somesite/somehandle/Maildir
4 /home/user6/imap/somesite/somehandle/Maildir
So, just display the users with the "Maildir" folder
kos
kos
@blade19899 Why do you have the same path repeated multiple times? Are they actually different?
@kos Sorry its a different website, forgot to edit that
same users, multiple site, multiple Maildir folder
kos
kos
11:38
@blade19899 Try this:
echo "Total mailboxes:" >/tmp/mailboxes
find ~ -mindepth 1 -type d -name 'Maildir' -printf '.' | wc -c >>/tmp/mailboxes
echo >>/tmp/mailboxes

find ~ -mindepth 1 -maxdepth 1 -type d -print0 | while read -d '' -r dir; do
	printf "%s\n\n" "$dir" >>/tmp/mailboxes
	find "$dir" -type d -name 'Maildir' -printf '.' | wc -c >>/tmp/mailboxes
	echo >>/tmp/mailboxes
done
Ah right you wanted all the paths. Hold on.
#! /bin/bash
echo 'Total mailboxes:' >/tmp/mailboxes
find ~ -mindepth 1 -type d -name 'Maildir' -printf '.' | wc -c >>/tmp/mailboxes
echo >>/tmp/mailboxes

find ~ -mindepth 1 -maxdepth 1 -type d -print0 | while read -d '' -r dir; do
	printf '%s\n\n' "$dir" >>/tmp/mailboxes
	find "$dir" -type d -name 'Maildir' >>/tmp/mailboxes
	echo >>/tmp/mailboxes
done
@blade19899 ^^ If I understood this should do.
If you need the wildcards around Maildir you should readd them, but from the output you posted it doesn't look like you do.
12:11
@kos Was at lunch. Gimme a min to test this.
> /home/user1

1

/home/user2

3

/home/user3

2

/home/user4

1
This is my desired output:
> user1

1 /home/user1/imap/somesite.com/siteuser1/Maildir
2 /home/user1/imap/somesite.com/siteuser2/Maildir
3 /home/user1/imap/somesite.com/siteuser3/Maildir
4 /home/user1/imap/somesite.com/siteuser4/Maildir
5 /home/user1/imap/somesite.com/siteuser5/Maildir
6 /home/user1/imap/somesite.com/siteuser6/Maildir
7 /home/user1/imap/somesite.com/siteuser7/Maildir

user2

1 /home/user2/imap/someothersite/siteuser/Maildir
kos
kos
@blade19899 Huh? Did the number of mailboxes at the start match at least?
@blade19899 That one was wrong, try the one after: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/27664486#27664486
@kos I think so
kos
kos
@blade19899 Also replace printf '%s\n\n' "$dir" >>/tmp/mailboxes with printf '%s\n\n' $(basename "dir") >>/tmp/mailboxes on line 7 if you don't want the full path.
kos
kos
13:19
@Tim Nevermind, it was just that the last two weren't edited using the zero-width spaces, and so they looked disrupted (that fooled me into thinking the whole post was. I could have rather fixed those two, but well, now it'd be way too much stuff to fix). :)

2 hours later…
15:31
@kos Sorry for late reply, had some tasks to finish. I edited the output manually. But, after the tasks was handed over, I finished the script xD
> # cleans the mailboxes.txt file, if this script was previously excecuted:
echo "" > /tmp/mailboxes.txt

	# Gives a total number of all the mailboxes:
	echo "Total mailboxes:" >> /tmp/mailboxes.txt
	find /home/*/imap/ -name *Maildir* -type d -not -empty | wc -l >> /tmp/mailboxes.txt

	# Just simulating an <enter>
	echo "" >> /tmp/mailboxes.txt

for i in `ls /home/`; do {

        echo -n "$i:" >> /tmp/mailboxes.txt

        	# displays a total number of mailboxes for a specific user ($i)
			find /home/$i/imap/ -name *Maildir* -type d -not -empty | wc -l >> /tmp/mailboxes.txt
and you didn't use code formatting / fixed width why?

VTC this off-topic question.
18:47
anyone wanna help me test something in IRC?
I'm trying to find a client that will minimize to the tray or just disappear when I don't need to look at it and I think I found one, but I need to make sure it will still send notifications when closed.
user139252
@Seth I would, but all my IRC is CLI D=
@TheBrownOne your client being CLI probably wont matter to Seth getting notified.
you only need to ping him when he doesn't want to.
user139252
Ah, alright.
user139252
@Seth just give me a server to connect to, and I'll try
Trying to figure out a decent sounding, halfway-professional alias/username is a pain
I'm looking at starting some minor freelancing and I don't think RPiAwesomeness is really gonna cut it :P
19:02
@TheBrownOne sorry, had to step away for a moment.
I'm on irc.ubuntu.com
@RPiAwesomeness usually you put your name in there somewhere.. although I know @James used "Snowy Penguin Solutions".
shifted probably isn't the best either for that kind of thing..
No, not really :P
@Seth I would like to, but using first name + first initial really doesn't work for me :P
@RPiAwesomeness haha, no, it doesn't xD
That sounds like some kind of jello or something.. xD
Nateo ... I think @Mateo might think I'm encroaching on his username or something :P
you could use "Fluffy Goat Solutions" borrowing from James and Nathan :P
19:06
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
REAL professional that xD
@Seth Yours works, SethJ sounds decent
I feel like that was a hint of some kind ;)
okay then ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@RPiAwesomeness but yeah, it doesn't sound too bad.
How do I install Jupyter on a Ubuntu server?
It's running Ubuntu Server LTS
some of the best advice I've heard in my life --^
@RPiAwesomeness What about a name consisting of another fruit that is related to a raspberry?
For example "Loganberry Solutions".
ooh, that's a really good idea @ByteCommander!
(A Loganberry is a hybrid of raspberry and a kind of blackberry)
Interesting idea, I'll put it in the list
One idea I had was Node Blue
19:38
And it also sounds like Wolverine's nickname from the X-Men
@RPiAwesomeness that's not bad, but what does it stand for?
I dunno :P
Kinda like Node Red & NodeJS I guess?
So as a logo, you could probably draw a dark red raspberry (that's how loganberries look) and three scratches diagonally through that, like if Wolverine ripped the icon with his claws.
what if we're not x-men fans?
@Seth Not all of us are iguana fans either... :P
19:47
@Seth @RPiAwesomeness Yeah, so I can tell the story of Penguin sometime.
I'll come back here in about 2 hours, gotta run an errand.
(nor fans of wolves or goats...)
user139252
You could just use "Last Name + Tech". That's what I did. It's just not very clever.
I can tell the whole story, including how it backfired more than once.
and provide some words of experience about contracts when freelancing with schoolwork
still wanna help me with IRC @TheBrownOne?
@James I'm interested in hearing the whole story ;)
I should be here in 2 hours.
I wanna hear freelancing stories :D
Since I'm looking at trying to start doing it
19:52
@RPiAwesomeness clientsfromhell.net
heh, those are great
user139252
@Seth Sure thing
@TheBrownOne Join #askubuntu on freenode (or irc.ubuntu.com)
I always use my name.
Nice, new feature on GitHub ^
19:55
Cool.
user139252
@Seth Alright, message sent
Didn't get a notification :/
I wonder if I have the settings wrong..
@blade19899 Oh wow, yeah that's nice
can you try again @TheBrownOne?
I've changed the notification settings.
There we go!
user139252
Yay!
20:00
Now one more if you don't mine @TheBrownOne
Testing minimized this time.
@TheBrownOne Thanks!
I've now found a new IRC client :D
20:15
If I install samba4 on Ubuntu server, does it start automatically when I reboot or do I have to do something?
it should.
20:45
@macurie yes it does automatically start.
@Rinzwind Ok, thanks
oh and it already started on install.
user139252
@Rinzwind Did you just install it on your own machine just to test?
