17:00
so... do we get a swag every month now? :D
Got your second swag as well?
high five!
we're causing stackexchange bankruptcy
2
:>
You think? :D
17:02
i'm quite sure that's a not so cheap bug. ;)
Maybe it is because we all are awesome*2
1x for "ask", 1x for "ubuntu"?
That is, twice as awesome as the other SE sites.
Yea.
@OctavianDamiean Well that's a given
17:03
sending it back would be too expensive :(
Am I allowed to fix punctuation in the answers? :)

A: Does Microsoft Office 2010 still have incompatibility issues with LibreOffice

paru38with my personal experience i say that NO they are not A .doc file which is created in libra office suffers from some changes when it is reopened in MS office 2010 . you will fell that your header and footer settings are disturbed same in the case of .ppt files a prepared a seminar of robot...

Plus it would leave you without your second shirt and stickers!
@jokerdino Yes
That is nice. :)
Look it is actually not wasted money. It is an investment in advertisement.
17:04
i'm not going to put 10 SE stickers on my notebook :D
wait
there's a 2nd round of swag?
More T-Shirts means you can advertise Ask Ubuntu with doubled efficiency.
seems so - though i doubt that's intentional.
I see it more as a reward to the people who generate most of the content rather than the advertising
which is a nice bonus
It was a joke. :)
17:06
it's an honor to advertise ubuntu for free. ;D
You know, I've planned to put a huge Ubuntu logo on my car but I guess I have to become an Ubuntu member first.
i want a COF-shaped e-car. :P
they sent askubuntu tshirts to UDS
they were all taken in like less than 5 minutes
if that
DUDE! That is way cheaper than I though!
17:18
MUGS AND SHIRTS ARE ON THEIR WAY TO ME.
If you want a shirt, I need charms. ahem
No more tags! Yay
i'd like to get a pack of four in different colors. black/white, white/orange, orange/white, purple/orange. :P
@MarcoCeppi should we ask for the help tag to get removed (deleted)?
On meta, yes
blacklist
even better
but do we get it that frequently?
btw, what's the tag markdown in chat?
17:21
There were 36 questions with help tag earlier today.
urgs
[ tag : word ] without spaces becomes
thanks ;)
There was a killall tag:help mission undertaken by @jrg
And then, we ended up with zero help tags.
17:24
isn't there a free and open ubuntu phone? i don't want a google-branded google nexus with google spying on everything i do. :P
no ubuntu on nexus?
oh, the question/request is already there

Q: Why do we have a "help" tag?

Thomas Wardhelp is kind of a pointless tag, no? There's 36 questions which have it, each of them is asking for support with something different. There's no real purpose for it, since this site is for support and help anyways. Should it be removed?

@rlemon rooting a phone sounds scary :-o
it's not. many guides and apps to help you along the way
the disclaimer "may bork your device" is like any disclaimer of it's kind. Just means you messing with stuff they don't warrenty
but it's software - you should always be able to bring it back to it's original state. (at least that has been true for my android tablet)
haha "wifi hacking, for testing purposes" :D
Bounty offered: xmodmap works for gnome session, but not for apps? http://askubuntu.com/questions/80261/xmodmap-works-for-gnome-session-but-not-for-apps #gnome
17:29
yeah, i'm usually not too concerned about warranties. :P unbricked a really dead motherboard once (using a floppy drive and doing everything completely blind :D), that got me some self-confidence. :D
but the apps still have limited rights after rooting the thing, right?
(i know some need elevated permissions to access interesting stuff)
not sure - my tablet runs everything fine. my brothers android device we rooted
we both run custom ROMS though
read a bit about the cyanogenmod
anywho - step out for lunch and kill this garbage suspension .
@htorque that or vegan are my #1 and 2
depending on the device of course
first i got to buy an android phone... without carrier iq. :P or an iphone 4s. haha. never.
gotta be careful not to offend.
might get flagged
17:33
i'm sure sabdfl lost 20% fanboys when he said he prefers the iphone over an android-based smartphone. :D
My entire world collapsed a bit on that day but yea, I still like him. :D
it's a good OS no doubt. I just don't like how everything apple is so closely kept.
I won't be mongered into buying a new device because they say i have to.
@htorque Just go for a Nexus S or if you can afford it go for a Galaxy Nexus.
or wait 3 more months and you can get a blackberry in a foreclosure sale.
askubuntu.com/questions/87755/… I am pretty sure this is a dupe.
17:36
Oh yea and never ever go for a BlackBerry.
@OctavianDamiean it's the galaxy s2 vs galaxy nexus - don't like the google branding on the nexus, though. s2 will see an official android 4.0, so it's currently my fav (also because it's a bit smaller).
the 9900 blackberry isn't that bad i've heard.
but i'm not a blackberry guy anyway.
ive had like 6 blackberrys in 3 years
@htorque Uhm you don't like the Google branding on the back but like software branding of the carrier? Orly?
because of hardware failures
bbl
Plus you'll get updates as soon as they are available from Google with Nexus devices.
17:39
@OctavianDamiean you can get rid of one but not the other. at least not without sand paper. :D
Plus Samsung devices come with their own UI and other software.
An UI you can't get rid of that easy.
Not without rooting the phone which voids the warranty.
you can't pimp your phone and keep the warranty! :P
i'll see. if it's going to be the nexus, i'll put an ubuntu sticker over the google logo. :D
Well the point is if you go with a Samsung Galaxy S2 or what it is called you'll get the latest Android versions way later than I will. :D
Also the Nexus S will get Ice Cream Sandwich.
@htorque I can absolutely live with that decision. :D
great! :D
i watched some full-hd clips done by those phones on youtube. very impressive what those <7mm thin things can do. :-o
mhhhh, ice cream sandwich... drool
Go for a Milchschnitte ... oh, why did I just say that? drool
17:48
Good night everyone. :)
Oh yea, you can get an ice cream sandwich right away. You can clone it off the Google repositories.
Something I can't do with a Milchschnitte.
Following the linux kernel mailing list is awesome and absolutely interesting but I just can't keep up. It is insane.
18:03
insane → spot on. and all the drama, it's hilarious.
@jokerdino good night :)
@htorque I don't get too excited about the movies
for most of those services you would hit a service cap in about 1.5 movies in the US
@JorgeCastro no, i meant videos taken by the devices!
OH
right!
Here in Austria you pay about 5€ extra and can watch TV on your phone as long as you want. :)
how long do you want to watch tv on such a small screen? :P
18:08
As long as the movie/series takes if I'm not at home. :P
guess i could stand a 20 minutes simpsons episode.
but a whole movie? :D
a football (soccer) game? ball-size equals one pixel? :P
It isn't that bad.

Q: How to make Downloads folder behave like a temp directory

henriqueIn order to reduce disk space usage, I want to automate a temporary clean in my Downloads folder. Q: Using cygwin and rsync -- "password file must not be other-accessible"

NateI've finally got an old computer of mine running as a backup server with Ubuntu 11.10. I'm planning on using it to backup my Windows 7 machine weekly using rsync. I've got cygwin installed, and rsync works perfectly. I'm following this guide, though, to create it as a scheduled task: http://just...

@OctavianDamiean: You can't get a user running in chat with FlackBot.
but only to sleep, he will laze around just about anywhere.
You need the chat broker app which is closed source.
jrg
jrg
@rlemon That sounds like a normal cat to me.
18:35
@jrg my other cat (all cats i've had really) tend to gravitate towards high places..
i wonder if you should use comic sans in an application letter. :D
sleeps on top of the fridge, cupboards, top shelf in closet, ect..

ssh's into Georges computer, tarballs the flackbot folder, and scps it to his server BOOM I HAZ AWESOMENESS.

@OctavianDamiean you can't. George keeps it very very secret.

@Alvar Dominating the front page? Dude, that's about as close to Jorge as any of us can get.
I need some rep - my rep has 666 in it D:
18:40
@OctavianDamiean You can't at this point but...
...you can still test FlackBot by entering commands and getting responses.
@jrg not that, if you are jorge you should be bot like at least, edit every question within a minute of it getting posted, putting constant messages in the chat about questions, so you are half there...
Well I know that I'm asking because I'd like to get a bot in my chat room over at Stack Overflow.
@RolandTaylor not anymore ;)
The chat broker's sole purpose is to take your input from chat and deliver it to the Python daemon.
18:40
yay thanks whoever that was
jrg
jrg
@Alvar Only half? i see.
@rlemon gracias :D
@OctavianDamiean That's great - I can just send my instance there.
who has used ReviewBoard for code review before?
18:41
Right, so the only way is to write my own version of that broker.
I am kicking myself for not thinking about a charm for it
1
A: adwaita gnome-shell.css

Roland TaylorThe easiest solution I can think of is to download the GNOME Shell .deb package and extract the .css file from there, if you don't want to reinstall. You can get the .deb for your architecture (the .css is platform independent really, but just in case) from this page: https://launchpad.net/ubunt...

@jrg work work work (edit)
@JorgeCastro I have to be honest - I haven't heard of it :)
@GeorgeEdison The only problem is that I'd have to modify it quite a bit so I'll probably have to write my own.

@OctavianDamiean Modify it how?
I'm sure any additions to your version would be welcome in FlackBot.
@GeorgeEdison looking for more charms to do?
@GeorgeEdison the shirts and mugs are on their way to me this week btw!
18:45
Shirts and mugs?
Well it'd have to return certain custom messages which are specific to my room and I'd like to find a way to have the bot set access permissions for me.
@JorgeCastro I'd like to do more charms but I'm swamped ATM thanks to the private beta for the API.

AjtgarberSo far I've had my computer freeze three times because I opened either Chromium, or Skype over top of a full screen Minecraft window. It has frozen when it was running Unity and when it was running the classic desktop environment. Also I was running a Minecraft server at those times and ended up ...

@JorgeCastro Not yet.
I wish it did.
But it doesn't.
The plan seems to be to save that for v3.0.

do you guys know if there's a hack to enable activating a pane via the breadcrumb bar in nautilus' split pane view?

brother here.
link is invalid.
or are you the brother. :P
jrg
jrg
he says its because the Valar were jealous of all others, and so therefor he (that is, the valar) made them.
@rlemon this is james, typing for the brother. :P
Oh, and I am definitely a gem, not a charm. techy nerdy juju/ruby joke
Hasta la Victoria siempre...
Whats up ?
you can argue he created them not out of jealousy but impatience of the children of Ilúvatar (men and elves)
I'm back, anyway to easily get Ubuntu to load or at least repair with the installation disk when there is nothing but a black screen during the boot process? ALT + CTRL + F1 doesn't work...
19:42
so they were not in fact an accident but a spiteful embargo
jrg
jrg
He (brother) claims it was jealously.
he (brother) is 8 so idc :D
jrg
jrg
@rlemon haha fair enough. :D
source - it's on a wiki about a made up universe and its characters, it has to be true
jrg
jrg
@chazdg so you have an install disk?
this would be a good question for scifi.se.
19:44
What The Perl ?
yes, jrg, the disk I installed Ubuntu...
jrg
jrg
Ok.
so, when you boot, you should see something like this:
you want the "try ubuntu without installing" option, then you can do repair from there.
Mine goes right into the language page and bypasses that - kinda strange
@jrg I would be more than willing to participate if your brother can cite his assumptions. :P It's been bout 9 years since i've read the books and to be honest I was never the type to research the out-of-book story lines and plots
jrg
jrg
ok.
@chazdg so when you get to the language page, immediately start navigating the menu with your arrow keys.
So, when you get here:
hit enter for english, navigate with your arrow keys.
and then hit enter for your language. then you should get that menu from earlier.
19:48
brb
ok, can you give me a little more advice as to how to repair the system...:)
bummer, you need to install language support to use the decimal comma instead of the decimal point. :-o shouldn't that be connected to the keyboard layout? :-/
jrg
jrg
@chazdg well, depends on what your problem is. :)
and for that, i'd recommend asking on the site.
hehe, listening to the star trek background noises..
jrg
jrg
19:53
wait...
his problem is weird since he cannot navigate the recovery menu and when booting and getting hanged he cannot switch to a tty
jrg
jrg
@chazdg i actually had the exact same problem as you.
i ended up solving it by doing a re-install of Ubuntu.
jrg
jrg
(choosing not to delete /home)
@chazdg i know it's not fun, but thats what i ended up doing. :(
I tried but people seem stumped
jrg
jrg
19:54
so you tried to re-install?
no no no, please no...!
I was hoping for diagnostic tools to fix it
jrg
jrg
I wasn't even able to boot into recovery mode on my machine, same as you. :(
shoot
jrg
jrg
19:56
well, we're dealing with proprietary drivers. makes it difficult to make diagnostic tools. :(
@chazdg however, you won't lose all your settings/files/documents if you don't have it wipe your harddrive (which i don't think you'll do since you're dual-booting, same as me)
i was told my method did too much and I deleted too much which confuses as i Did it twice before with n o problem
jrg
jrg
i decided against updating my driver since i had that happen to me. :(
I hear you, but I did it with 11.10 and 11.11 and all went well, but now my fallback graphic device fails to load. I think it has to do with the updated kernel
jrg
jrg
Yeah, entirely likely.
just wish the open source drivers were... capable.
that would be nice
20:06
@jrg already got some answers.
jrg
jrg
@rlemon yeah, i saw. Pretty good ones. I'll let him read them, although I don't like them referencing wikipedia as a source. :P

stuartcIs there a way to exit the splash screen during boot and view the verbose boot without rebooting?

Hey guys
Is there any way to change my theme to Faenza-Ambiance without using Gnome Tweak Tool?
I've changed the icons successfully using Ubuntu Tweak, but it doesn't seem to detect Faenza-Ambiance or Radiance under GTK themes.
Hi guys!
Hiya.
Are there any alternatives for the standard update-manager in ubuntu?
There are certain things I dislike
jrg
jrg
@NobbZ sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade is the only one i know of.
Maybe Package Kit?
Or does that also invoke update manager when you try to update?
20:40
I am anoyed by the fact that I cant ignore packages for updating
with terminal way I cant even uncheck that particular update
I believe you can do something like that with Synaptic
which does not have a notification on new updates
I had to check every day by hand
Open up Synaptic, click on the package you don't want to update, and then select Force version from the package menu?
Or maybe this will be useful: ubuntugeek.com/…
The best way I could imagine would be to use mintupdate in ubuntu :)
Heh. Did any of the above tips help?
20:46
Yes, using synaptics to fix the version and then using update-manager to get notifications about updates seem to work
Glad I could help. :)
But that feels not to be the "right" way
I agree, there should be an option for it somewhere in update manager.
Even Windows has it.
Hmmm.... I can find update-manager project in launchpad, but I am not able to write Bugreports or Blueprints... They are not set up for the project, do you know another place where one could propose that feature?
By the way guys, figured out my problem. I had Faenza selected as the icon theme instead of Faenza Ambiance. >.<
20:59
@jrg every time i read someone replying to @NobbZ i think they are calling him a noob.
