@HeatherBrown new background
@NathanOsman Hopefully you didn't do that while the VM failed over to your mobile phone's hotspot... That would have been truly awful >:-)
It wasn't using the network.
Argh. And now it's out of disk space.
@Fabby writing not downloading
@NathanOsman :D :D :D You don't need to watch TV! You live in a soap opera!
@Zacharee1 Thanks for the clarification... :-)
@Seth I want to do that, but I don't want to break my system again :p
I guess I do have the data separate though
@Zacharee1 uh, what makes you think it will break your system?
@Seth last time I upgraded system stuff (nothing going wrong), I couldn't boot.
15.04/10
The water in by bottle in condensing on the inside because I have it next to my computer fan :p

O_O
And now I will get even more complaints: I'm even self-answering meta questions! :D @Seth
00:07
I don't think that file is supposed to be 7.7 GB.
@NathanOsman You can always delete the VM and remove Gnome completely ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I had to rm the file to do much of anything because of disk space.
@Fabby It has a snapshot, so it's easy to rollback.
Ah!
KDE is the real enemy here
:P
kos
kos
@Seth Thanks. Running Software Updater now.
00:13
@Seth Path?
@HeatherBrown do you have a static external IP?
@Zacharee1 sudo apt-get update&&sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
@Fabby no, his word choice. I'm wondering if it's meant to say patch :p
@Fabby turn your JS on and look at my site :PP
I run a sudo dist-upgrade before shutting down...
user139252
@Zacharee1 not yet, but it only changes if my modem goes down for hours at a time which shouldn't happen with my new UPS
(which is what I'm going to do next after the upgrade finishes)
00:17
@HeatherBrown OK, good! I'm SSHing with the IP right now :p. I should probably change that to the DNS
user139252
I do have a script to automatically update my domain's DNS entries upon new IP, so if you ever need it you can always dig
I only have two things to do for homework tonight!!!!
@HeatherBrown yeah I guess. No DynDNS/No-IP?
Ah! Done! Good night all!
@Fabby adiós
user139252
That costs money if I want to use a .tk domain :p
00:19
@HeatherBrown oh, right. Forgot about that part :p. I guess I was thinking redirects
I feel accomplished
I made my own CSS button :p
@HeatherBrown your network profile picture finally updated itself
Oh, I need to make a back to top button on the site
You'll all be happy to know I've got my ElementaryOS and Mint installation ISOs in a directory named "ubuntu" :P
Meh - they're close enough :P
Ducks.
Not for AU :p
Why is it that we don't support them here? Are they that different?
kos
kos
Mostly is the fact that you have to draw the line somewhere.
So the line is: only official derivatives.
user139252
Otherwise, we should just be AskDebian or part of Unix and Linux
hmm maybe
But these derivatives are trying to be like Ubuntu, aren't they? They just haven't been officially recognized.
or am I missing something?
00:35
Ask Debian - there we go :P
First question: why isn't /sbin in the $PATH???
so anyone want to know the api I'm planning to use for the scope I want to build
kos
kos
I don't know hoh many Ubuntu derivatives are out there currently, but even if the number was low I guess the problem would be also defining "Ubuntu-based distribution". If I fork a distribution changing the logo and two other things that makes it a "Ubuntu-based distribution", but should it be supported? How far can I change it before it becomes just a Linux distribution?
that is why the distinction, we don't know what all they did or did not change
@kos I was just thinking that things like Kali and Mint are trying to be like Ubuntu. Ubuntu wasn't trying to be exactly like Debian, I don't think.
@Mateo ah
if they want to pursue compatibility, they will take the steps to become a recognized flavor
00:41
That explains it :)
Dankeschön
Mystery: "Please" and "You're welcome" are both "bitte" in German
kos
kos
@NathanOsman Do you have it in /etc/environment?
@NathanOsman I'm thinking of making a scope for this: api.wikia.com/wiki/LyricWiki_API/REST
@kos No idea.
@Mateo Not a bad idea.
the hard part I think would be it wants both artist and song to get a result
Oh, hmm...
00:44
artist will list songs by them
No option to search by title?
nope :/
scope?
@Zacharee1 for the ubuntu touch phones
@HeatherBrown rejoin?
@Mateo I don't know what scope means :p
00:45
it is like the dash search, but divided by services
oh, OK
they are running a contest to make them
I have exactly 9 tabs open o_O
@Mateo cool!
I really want to get Ubuntu Touch :(
00:48
so I think I will have the artist search primary - then you can add a comma then the song - or when you go through the artists songs, make one of the buttons send the search back to it's self
It's funny how the Nexus 4 has better specs than the iPhone 6+
lol, yeah
@Mateo Wish I could test
there was a funny graphic about that
idk how to respond, so I'll just say this

kos
kos
Does anyone know if dailymotion support HTML5?
ooo, I can try
they have a json api too
@kos Probably does.
that would be a cool scope, are you going to enter @kos ?
@Mateo LOL
@Mateo Dailymotion? Support? make me laugh xD
that site barely works as it is..
00:51
@Mateo @Seth can we get a pin for this? :p
@Seth But its screening process is much less strict, so tons of non-free shows are on it
that's.. not really what pins are for.
@Seth hence the ":P"
@Zacharee1 yeah I know.
kos
kos
@Mateo Yeah, I could. :D
@Zacharee1 Testing now on Chromium, cause I'd like to switch to it.
@kos do Chrome itself
00:53
they just did a new tutitorial for javascript scopes i think
who
c'mon Skype....
kos
kos
It does!
@kos yay!
Sìì
lol
Wait, Italian has the backwards accents?
kos
kos
00:55
Switching to Chromium.
@Zacharee1 Let me check my keyboard...
Yep.
So is "yes" sì and not sí?
@kos well, I don't think i have flash installed, it's playing video
kos
kos
@Zacharee1 It would be "sì", however in practice in writings is not always accented (although technically it should), so you may also find simply "si".
@Mateo Yeah, in fact it works also on Chromium. Nice.
01:02
@kos huh, so what's "if?"
Elementary does look nice.
kos
kos
@Zacharee1 If you want the full story, technically "sì" = yes, "si" =~ self (reflexive pronoun). For example "Si addormentò" =~ "he fell asleep", but in Italian is reflexive (so that would be something like "he put himself to sleep"). Same goes for "se", if you want to say "if" you should use the grave accent ("sè"), otherwise it has another meaning, which it's also kinda hard to explain without a context. Most of the times you can switch it with "with (him/her/it)self".
^^ And that was the Italian lesson for today. :D
*Most of the times you can switch it with "for (him/her/it)self"
@kos gah that's confusing for me. Si in Spanish is if, sí is yes, se is the third person reflexive and sé is the I form of to know, or the objective third person pronoun
kos
kos
@Zacharee1 Wow that's embarissing. I actually meant "acute". And yeah, forgot that "sé" is mostly used as the third person reflexive than in that edge case I mentioned. :D so it's basically the same as in Spanish.
01:18
Anyone here have Gnome installed?
aghghghhghg
:p
@NathanOsman yeth
Does it support app indicators out-of-the-box yet?
@NathanOsman sort of I think
There's this little bar at the bottom that can pop out or go back off screen, with a little arrow to let you toggle it
kind of like the panels in GNOME 2
y u post utube vidz wen i kent watch dem
kos
kos
01:24
@Zacharee1 My bad. :D Summing up "sì" = "yes", "si" =~ "self" (reflexive pronoun used as object), "sé" = if, "se" =~ "self" (reflexive pronoun used as subject)
@kos so everything except "yes" is Spanish with the Is and Es switched :p
kos
kos
Anyway Chromium looks blazing fast compared to Chrome, but maybe it's because I didn't bloat it yet.
and an extra accent here or there
@kos it also doesn't have Widevine :(
no Netflix
ok, I know this isn't a good example of what it's really like, but it is still funny xD
@Seth stahp pls
01:28
@Zacharee1 watch later
kos
kos
@Zacharee1 "Si" (es) = "Se" (it), "Sí" (es) = "Sì", "Se" (es) = "Sé" and the last ("sé") what do you mean by "is the I form of to know, or the objective third person pronoun"?
@kos sé = I know
and sorry, it's sí that's the third person objective pronoun
like "I drank it for him" (weird sentence)
bebí para sí
I think
AGH
It's reflexive
kos
kos
@Zacharee1 Brain is exploding... Ask me one at the time :D
Let me restart :p
yo sé = I know -- infinitive = saber
And sé doesn't exist
I got that wrong
I was thinking of sí, which is yes, but also the third person objective reflexive
So something like "he hits himself"
kos
kos
Ok. "Yo sé" would be "Io so" (pronounced as "Io sò", but for some weird rule is wrong to put the accent on the "o"). "sí" would be either "sì" (yes) and "si" (third person objective reflexive pronoun).
01:39
fun :p
kos
kos
Not so much, my brain is aching.
It's weird that it's "Io"
it's capitalized too?
kos
kos
No, I capitalized it as in "Yo sé", but it's wrong to capitalize it unless at the start of a period.
OK
We English are very self centered :p
kos
kos
tl;dr not like in English
01:41
But at least we don't capitalize every noun (anymore), like German does
Or put our secondary verbs at the end of the clause
Can you down sit? :p
You need to the store go
kos
kos
That would sound weird also in Italian. :D
That would weird in Italian sound
kos
kos
Although that inversion was used in very archaic forms.
I'm not sure if it applies to helping verbs or not though
Like, is it "I can speak German," or "I can German speak?"
kos
kos
In German?
01:45
Yeah
Well, that escalated quickly:

@ByteCommander That's too bad.
@ByteCommander On another note I updated the answer but I used killall -e because killing random processes that match with killall didn't sound too good. But now the problem could be that each instance has a slightly different name. Ping me with the specific names if that's the case and I'll try to fix it. The better way would be tracking the specific PIDs anyway.

Q: New Zero-day exploit reportedly found affecting Linux/Android

IWPCHIRussia Today reports (20 January 2016) https://www.rt.com/usa/329512-linux-security-flaw-millions-risk/ that there is a new zero-day exploit that has been discovered affecting Linux and all Linux-based OSes for computers and phones. What is the deal; how does it affect Ubuntu; and when can we ex...

is this question on-topic?
11:13
@edwardtorvalds its a poor question with no real details other than in the link. But yes, the "how does it affect" is on-topic. Then "when will it be fixed" is not since we dont know that ... other than pointing the OP to the kernel devs
too broad question?
in terms of worthiness - usually by the time this stuff gets reported the fix is already winging its way into a kernel update in the next day or so.
kos
kos
It has been fixed already for 15.10 / 15.04 / 14.04: linux.softpedia.com/blog/…, and on the notice it's mentioned also 12.04.
meh - its kind of vague - leave the community to decide if its too broad

It's still only a local escalation exploit. It's not the end of the world as some sites seem to be reporting. It still needs a mechanism to be able to locally execute this code and if it can do that, chances are it can already encrypt all your documents (eg) and ransom them back to you.
Given the time it takes pwn2own contestants to hack browsers, and the complete ineptitude of advertising networks to sanitise javascript, it's hard to see how we're not all part of a botnet already. Maybe we are.
