Good night.
Good night from me too, it's getting time. o/
@A.B. - thanks for the edit :)
Hi all :)

Q: Periodic filesystem checks are a very good idea. Do modern flagship devices ever do them automatically?

unforgettableidIt's a very good idea for your OS to do periodic filesystem checks. Here's why. Microsoft program manager Kiran Bangalore writes that there are certain cases in which a filesystem can become corrupted. If you're using a journaling filesystem such as ext4 or f2fs, such cases are exceedingly rare...

I recently posted the above question on Android.SE.
@Takkat :)
@AbhishekBhatia can a VM get to serial devices then? can you try the screen command as on the wiki link to see it there are random characters in the terminal when you use the device that would rule out it getting through the VM, then we can see if it is a driver issue
20:25
^--- you can connect serial ports to a VM in VirtualBox
(In fact, you can connect them to a pipe.)
Grr
Switchable graphics can be such a nightmare
20:39
@RPiAwesomeness finally finished the Blender animation ---^
Surprisingly, using JPEG sprites really didn't make a lot of difference in filesize compared to the animated GIF.
Roughly 800 KB for the JPEG and 1.1 MB for the GIF.
A GIF was bigger?
Though the GIF uses dithering to reduce the colorspace to 32 colors...
@Zacharee1 Animated GIFs are almost always larger than their equivalent representation in other formats. At least in my experience.
20:41
GIF is not a good format.
PNG and JPEG are almost always a better choice.
The only reason to use GIF these days are animations.
...thanks to nearly non-existent browser support for APNG and MNG.
yeah
I have a Chrome extension to support APNG
I'm using Opera :P
I wonder what kind of filesize I'd get from creating an H.264 video...
Is that MP4?
MP4 is the container, yes.
And the answer is impressive: 120 KB.
Small
But does it repeat? ;p
20:46
@Mateo Thanks for the reply again! A few things I have already tried/Background info:
I wonder if browsers can loop the video smoothly...
1. The device works perfectly with a wired USB connection
Probably not
I'll find out.
2. I read to the device in windows by using python script to read the port but got nothing.
20:47
Do you happen to know where I could get some good (but cheap) DDR3-1600 240-pin 8GB RAM?
Something less than $40
I would like to know myself :P
3. My worry is that the device is to be intialized first from the PC for it to send data.
:P
Well, I can point you to one that costs $40
That is what is mentioned in this answer superuser.com/questions/1000040/…
From a reputable company? :P
20:49
Kingston
Seems to work. It's in the computer I built
Since I have two MC servers now, I want to go from 8GB to 16GB so I can run both at once
@NathanOsman Where can I access these settings in Ubuntu 15
@Mateo I will try what you said tom. as I don't the device with me right now. Thanks for pointer.
Still though the software WhiteServer doesn't seem to work.
@AbhishekBhatia Seeing as you need to ask all these questions, just to update a driver that may or may not be updateable, you may want to consider just getting a new card.
I downloaded the compatible driver and tried to reaf from serial port in windows but got nothing.
I am a newbie at this. Do you need to intialize wireless devices from PC/ pair them before they can send us the data?
@Zacharee1 jsfiddle.net/m3dhbq8k - loops fine in Chrome. Loops in Firefox too but it's a tiny bit jumpy.
21:08
Opera will play WebM video and loop it smoothly: jsfiddle.net/nathan_osman/m3dhbq8k/1
Loops fine in Firefox when WebM is provided.
Alright, I've updated the page to use videos now instead of the JPEG sprite.

1 hour later…

Does anybody by any change know how I can learn Japanese?
It's... not very simple, I imagine.
But there is this: japanese.stackexchange.com
I can't read half of it, though :P
user136984
But you can read some of it?
user136984
Ooh! My Tox IP tracing question was reopened! :D
user136984
@Nathan: What are the ping and retry interval settings about?
user136984
@James: And why did you change your name?
22:25
Those are automatically tuned for best performance.
@ParanoidPanda I decided to become James, the friendly moderator.
Rather than jrg, the initial and fierce moderator.
As opposed to "jrg the evil moderator"? :P
Ah, beat me to the punch line :P
user136984
Hmm... I don't like it... :P
user136984
I prefer a less friendly name! :P
Due to name changing restrictions, I tend to keep my "silly" names on Meta.SE.
user136984
22:28
You? Silly? :D
Well, tough. I control my display name.
I used to be james.
and then I became jrg.
now, I am james again.
user136984
@Nathan: If you and I went into a silly competition I would definitely come out victorious! :D
user136984
@James: When are you going to change it back to jrg again?
user136984
:P
@ParanoidPanda Dunno.
Probably won't.
I joined Ask Ubuntu when I was 14.
It's been 5 years.
22:30
Remember, I used to be a penguin named "George Edison" :P
Mostly I changed because I'm not jrg on anything else.
@NathanOsman Yeah, I'm still not sure that Nathan is who you really are. ;-)
^--- rocket launch in about 3 minutes
I think that we've got James Bond, Spy Extraordinaire in our midst.
Is this the AstroPi @NathanOsman?
Apparently it's a ULA Atlas V.
Oh great, issue that created a hold.
and they are going to roll back.
Yeah, they are launching some raspberry pi' up
22:32
Ah.
Going to the ISS
The timer stopped counting down...
I can't hear what's happening. No audio at the moment.
Restarted.
Wind excursion. Hold. Recycling
Ah.
22:48:12 is next launch chance
Countdown clocks continue will start in 10 minutes
darn, i can't make it home in that time.
guess i'll be stuck here at the office
22:35
Lol.
You could dash home and hope for another wind excursion :P
user136984
@NathanOsman And now you are a human being controlled by a penguin! >:P
I actually still have Flash working in Dolphin on my Android phone, so there's that.
I can't make it home before the end of the launch window
I used to wake up early and watch rocket launches at like, 3AM
I could have made it if it wasn't rush hour.

@ByteCommander No, I'm actually a penguin. That's a picture of my stuffed human.
ok, 8 minutes and counting, 4 minutes away from coming out of the hold.
Looks like everything's go.
Countdown has started again.
Ah, there we go.
Got audio back?
ustream has some serious issues with that.
22:45
I've got it muted, actually.
Ah, ok.
wind exceeded
:\
There is surprisingly low tolerance for wind :P
Yeah, rockets have a pretty good wind profile that makes them easy to toss about.
23:03:12 Zulu < New countdown
user136984
@James: Yeah, that time next week with this wind and these rockets... :P
So much for daylight.
22:50
Yeah.
This time it's all-or-nothing.
user136984
Well, I hope the rocket launches some point soon! But goodnight from over here! :)
only a few more minutes!
@ParanoidPanda goodnight - but it'll be over pretty soon.
Either it launches or everyone else calls it a day.
Dear weather: Please be nice. Thx, #Atlasv #Cygnus
Countdownis back on!
LAUNCH DANGIT
Safely, of course.
23:00
:(
Scrubbed for the day.
Ok, well that's it for today I guess.
fantastic working with you all to watch a Raspberry Pi and new underwear launch to the ISS.
23:14
@James you realize how weird that looks when read out of context, right?
23:41
