lol its not about having windows, I get it for free from school :P
oh good
then you need to look into "VirtualBox" and sftp to another server which you use
hmm that sounds doable, I've something to do over weekend :D
my coworker just agreed to donate his old HDD 500Gb (I'm pretty lucky :) )
icanhas?
;P
(I need a new drive to install windows 2000 onto)
hehe he is consolidating his 2 systems, I'll see if I get my hands on other as well ;)
transporting it to u will be a problem :P

I wish XEN would hurry on up and manage to virtualise all the hardware (namely audio and high-end graphics) so I could install a "real" virtual install of Windows for playing games. Wine is getting on my <redacted>.
Does it count as an answer if I do install WMP11 and make it "work" by playing audio and videos BUT here is the catch. You can only use the main menu when listening to music and can only see video in wmp11 fullscreen mode
You can use most of the WMP11 functionalities but only from the wmp menu
@LuisAlvarado ... I'll give you a upvote on that
I will put it as an answer but first lets test it out on another computer. Just tested on a laptop and my Pc
you up to it?
@LuisAlvarado need sleep tonight! Im on + 10 days with less then 4 hours of sleep! :P

ok will post answer after testing on at least another PC, just to be more sure

rick.roll(1);
@wisemonkey That's because SE uses a very effective CDN.
dunno wat that is but good :)
btw created new question and as discussed with @ThomasWard: I'll have to swallow my pride and use windows :P
CDN == Content Download Network.
unless I can change size of file received through rss feed from user side
and okie
So that means when your browser requests a static resource from SE, you receive a copy from a nearby server.
00:57
ohh
and nearby servers keep getting stuff every few minutes from SE to keep in sync
?
Something like that.
ok gotcha
01:29
A content delivery network or content distribution network (CDN) is a system of computers containing copies of data placed at various nodes of a network. When properly designed and implemented, a CDN can improve access to the data it caches by increasing access bandwidth and redundancy and reducing access latency. Data content types often cached in CDNs include web objects (text, graphics, URLs and scripts), downloadable objects (media files, software, documents), applications, live streaming media, and database queries. CDN benefits The capacity sum of strategically placed servers can...

...and then do I get to join the charmers group or something?
Oli
Oli
@JorgeCastro I always thought of them as content distribution networks. Funny how many different Ds you can sub in there that work.
And I don't think SE does use a CDN but all the static stuff is separated. They push all the images through sstatic.net which is owned by them and the IP for it (as requested from the UK) is a New York ip address. When you're using a true edge-location CDN (eg Akami, or Amazon CloudFront) when you request things you get them from a more local IP. I suspect SE just has a few cheapy servers pumping out the static files for all the sites. Edit: this is slightly wrong.
@Oli I've always thought of it as "expensive"

Q: Help us test the advantages of using a CDN

balphaWe're looking at putting our static content – JavaScript, CSS, images, etc. – on a CDN. Currently we're serving this content from http://sstatic.net. While this works great, it means that I (sitting in Berlin) have to get my CSS from all the way across the Atlantic, because the serve...

@JorgeCastro CloudFront isn't bad actually. I use it for a client who does online coaching videos. It's actually cheaper than the standalone (read: non-CDN) Flash Media Server he was renting before we switched. A lot cheaper. $3 per month vs $99.
Plus its a ton faster for global users.

Ugh, I've had to redo this one single problem 2 times just because I put + instead of a - and vice versa in the wrong places
jrg
jrg
So you're doing calc... i'm trying to avoid doing a book report...
Oh god, book reports
over the summer, I had to read 4 books, and write 3-4 page essays on each of the books, along with keeping a giant list of vocab words for each book, AND explaining the main themes of the novel
Sucked for me, especially since I did the whole thing 2 days before school and I only read 2 of the 4 books >.<

thankfully i don't have to do vocab. and i'm able to keep it at 2 pages. :P

I'm just good at procrastinating. I had summer work for US History as well, did that on the day before and got an A as well

This question keeps coming up a lot on Stack Overflow for some reason:

What was Stack Overflow built with?

Some even wondered if Stack Overflow was built in Ruby on Rails. I consider that a compliment!

This question has been covered in some detail in our podcasts, of course, but I know not everyone has time to listen to a bunch of audio footage to find the answer to their question. So, in that spirit, here’s the technology “stack” of Stack Overflow, the stuff Jarrod, Geoff, and I used to build it: …

And a more recent post:

I thought as a break form the normal prose some of our readers might enjoy a short overview of the Stack Exchange Network (including Stack Overflow, Server Fault, and Super User) from a technical view:

95 Million Page Views a Month

800 HTTP requests a second

180 DNS requests a second

55 Megabits per second

1 Rack with Peak Internet in OR (Hosts our chat and Data Explorer)

2 Racks with Peer 1 in NY (Hosts the rest of the Stack Exchange Network)

12 Web Servers (Windows Server 2008 R2)

2 Database Servers (Windows Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2008 R2) …

ADB is fine here
the problems is when I try run ./adb it always says persmission denied.
@AmithKK you mean root?

@rogcg nope
so.. withou being root

@jokerdino don't think thats it - it looks fine.

@AmithKK bash: ./adb: Permission denied
@GeorgeEdison Bug : Your userscript is not fitting on screen

yeah
IDK why.
@rogcg can you see the files with nautilus
yeah
@rogcg What does nautilus say about the permissions

@rogcg for?
@AmithKK for me, not root
@rogcg Others:?
@AmithKK none
@rogcg set it to read and write

@AmithKK I try but it return automatically to none
@rogcg Real odd problem
aghhh
@rogcg Idea: try running nautilus as root like this : sudo nautilus
And try that again
@AmithKK I did
16:19
@rlemon Nice! You've outdone yourself
i'm just trying to get the ones done that no one has done yet.
@rlemon Your good :)
thanks.
You're good.
@AmithKK actually what is happening is that I cant run any file like ./file-name
IDK why
16:21
i'm a photoshop guy - gimp is giving me a run around.
but i'm getting used to it.
any kind of script, etc., it says permission denied
anyone knows why this happens when I try to run ./<file>??
umm sudo ./<file> ?
@rogcg Try running ls -la ./<file> to find out what the permissions are (and the owner)
@wisemonkey Running as sudo can be dangerous when you're uncertain of what the file is :)
16:29
@MarcoCeppi: indeed, but first thing thats comes to my mind when its permission-denied is 'sudo' :)
argh and why does askubuntu.com keep highlighting question which I didn't open to read :-/
What's the difference between using sudo vs. gksu?

Q: What is the difference between "gksudo nautilus" and "sudo nautilus"?

DrKenobiI've been using "gksudo nautilus" and "sudo nautilus" through 'Alt+F2'. What's the difference? They look very similar!

they are same however with sudo u can't open UI for e.g. if u want to use gedit u need to use gksu for vi sudo
So, only use sudo if you want the resulting changes to be owned by "root". Like changes in the filesystem...gotcha. I've had a bad habit develop there.
Crap, we're at Alpha 1 already?

@jwdinkc sudo is only really for running command line programs, gksudo is for running GUI applications as root

@rogcg Your file doesn't have execute permissions :) chmod 0700 ./file will give it execute. If you want anyone to be able to execute it just run chmod +x ./file
@MarcoCeppi still keeps permission denied after this chmod 0700 ./adb
@rogcg Do you own the file?
16:56
@MarcoCeppi yeah
after running chmod +x it still keeps -rw--------
im using 11.10, when I used 10.04 it didnt happen
@GeorgeEdison 69 out of 70 strings of StackApplet have been translated. :)
ok, now the problem is different. I coppied the folder to /home/user directory, set the chmod to +x and after I tried running ./adb devices it says :

-bash: ./adb: No such file or directory
@rogcg If it's not setting the permissions then you probably don't own the file. Just sudo chmod +x file instead

@MarcoCeppi how to solve it?

Okay, you have a read-only filesystem - that's your problem and why you can't chmod
