Q: LightDM greeter simple prompt Xubuntu 15.10

mefiXI've got a problem configuring LightDM (version 1.16.5) under Xubuntu 15.10 such that the greeter only shows a simple prompt like user: __________ password: __________ without proposing users in a list kind of way. I found this thread: http://askubuntu.com/questions/68953/dont-list-all-use...

@ParanoidPanda What do you mean with "overflow" there? o.O

hg8
hg8
@ByteCommander Why a downvote here ? askubuntu.com/a/704971/338915
user136984
I didn't actually write that comment, it's a standard method in the Oracle JDK, and that's a comment written by the guy who original wrote the code, the rest of the comments are mine though.
13:19
@hg8 Well you did technically make a link-only answer.
hg8
hg8
But it answer the question
Why not give @hg8 a hint to improve, covert or delete it before downvoting ?
@hg8 Have you ever looked at the LQ Review Queue? There's a canned response for the "Recommend Deletion" describing how link-only answers are bad
hg8
hg8
@Zacharee1 Yes thanks. I go to the LQ everyday.
I think that's why you got a downvote @hg8
hg8
hg8
13:22
@Zacharee1 OP ask a simple question, I answer with a simple answer. Just trying to help here.
I'm just trying to give an idea why there's a downvote: link answers aren't good
Exactly what I think as well : First we are here to help other users !
hg8
hg8
@Zacharee1 I understand, thanks ;)
@hg8 I did not downvote that one, I only left the comment.
I'm in the kitchen, BBL...
hg8
hg8
@ByteCommander oh ok sorry about that, the downvote what at the exact same time your comment.
user136984
13:30
@ByteCommander: BBL? Isn't that one of those large breakfast or meal deals? Or something else...? :D
hg8
hg8
@ParanoidPanda be back later :p
user136984
Ah... @hg8: So what's the meal deal called?
user136984
I'm sure it's something similar... :D
hg8
hg8
@ParanoidPanda No idea on this one
@hg8 That's not an answer. It's a classic link only answer, there's even a flag for that. Edit it and include the information from the link or just leave it as a comment. At the moment, you're not providing an answer; you're only telling people where they should go to find one.

Q: Are software comparisons allowed and if so how broad are you allowed to be?

Paranoid PandaAre software comparisons considered on-topic here? I mean Ubuntu software of course, and probably software which is specific to it or at least Linux but runs on Ubuntu. And how broad is considered 'too broad' in this case? I mean, can you just ask what is the difference and why you would use one ...

Q: Your answer is in another castle: when is an answer not an answer?

Shog9I think we can all agree, this sucks: If you've been around a little while, you've probably encountered hundreds of answers like this in various forums, some of them even marked as "The Answer" by well-meaning1 forum admins looking to close a thread. We could try to enumerate the commonly-obse...

@terdon ok thanks
Let me know when you edit it and I'll gladly change my -1 to +1.

@terdon Thanks, that won't be necessary. I deleted it. OP is smart enough to see the option "Replace Windows by Ubuntu" by himself when he is going to install Ubuntu.

@hg8 Fair enough, he probably will :)
And yes, Shog really nailed it with that apple metaphor.

I love the Apple one.

Ooh! I've just had a power cut! :D At first I thought it was something wrong with APT not downloading stuff properly, but then I realised that there was no power at all...
@ParanoidPanda Well, I have never seen any apt-whatever powering off a machine yet...
just a little test
one more line...
okay, this will be the last one, I think.
@Serg @A.B. @Sneetsher I posted a new question.

Q: Ubuntu source package dependency tree

xiaodongjieI have some packages. Let's guess as following about them. I have 3 packages, A.deb, B.deb, C.deb. There are 3 source packages for each packages, too. A.dsc+A.tar.gz, B.dsc+B.tar.gz, C.dsc+C.tar.gz. And C.deb depends on B.deb and B.deb depends on A.deb. If i modify A.deb so ...

14:48
Is there any difference between those two syntaxes?
cat filename | some_command
some_command <(cat filename)
@Serg Do you know if that's the same, or what the difference would be? ^
@ByteCommander No, not really but both are useless uses of cat.
@terdon So how to kick the cat instead?
some_command file
Uhm, no.
(usually)
14:53
Actually, it's a list of files...
And the some_command does not accept multiple input files.
It was cat file1 file2 | dd of=file12 conv=lcase and I got a comment with this other syntax.
I wondered if there's any difference in the | pipe or using <(...) instead.
Ah, OK, if you're concatenating multiple files, cat is the way to go. As for the difference, not really. The pipe is a pipe and the <() is basically a named pipe. It feeds the input from a /dev/fd device:
terdon@badabing foo $ cat file | wc
      3       3      14
terdon@badabing foo $ wc <(cat file)
      3       3      14 /dev/fd/63
   Process Substitution
       Process substitution is supported on systems that support named pipes
       (FIFOs) or the /dev/fd method of naming open files. It takes the form
       of <(list) or >(list). The process list is run with its input or outā€
       put connected to a FIFO or some file in /dev/fd. The name of this file
       is passed as an argument to the current command as the result of the
       expansion. If the >(list) form is used, writing to the file will proā€
       vide input for list. If the <(list) form is used, the file passed as
The main difference is that cat file | command works on any system while command <(cat file)only works on systems that support named pipes.
Thanks for the explanations!

@ByteCommander you might want to delete your comment under hg's answer, it's now obsolete.

@cl-netbox Thanks !
@cl-netbox do you know about debian package? lol
@shyam Please edit your question and tell us exactly what you did. The tutorials have many steps, we need to know how you followed them.
15:03
Actually that question was not posted by me
@xiaodongjie why lol ? - hello to you ! :)
@terdon Sure. @hg8 Converted that comment into an upgoat! ;-)
@cl-netbox :)
@shyam Then I can't help. My only suggestions would be ways of improving the question. We'd need more info about your hardware.
15:05
@ByteCommander Isn't this cute ? =)
The upgoat? o.O
hg8
hg8
@ByteCommander Thanks =)
@terdon
The hardware in question is a rtl8723be WiFi adapter
@terdon thank you the edit. :)
@xiaodongjie You're welcome.
15:07
@cl-netbox thank you, upvote.
The laptop in question is a HP 15-ac170TU
The laptop came with free DOS
This probably is not a hardware issue because the WiFi was running fine on Windows 7
@shyam No, not a hardware issue, what we need to know is what hardware you have and what driver you used.
Initially without manually configuring any drivers, the WiFi was failing to connect to WPA secured networks
It would connect to hotspots from phones but not to the home WiFi
Then I fixed it with the above driver
Now I have a range problem
@xiaodongjie ??? I see no upvote =)
If I sit right under the WiFi router, it gets connected but a few metres away, nope! :(
15:14
@cl-netbox yes, however.
@xiaodongjie you speak in riddles :)
@cl-netbox I always say thank you to my friends.
@xiaodongjie Very nice behavior ! I do so as well - So you did thank me for my upvotes for you - correct ? :)
@cl-netbox yes. correct.
@terdon After quite some searching I found the question posted by someone with the exact same problem
15:18
Yes, but was that the right driver for your hardware?
@xiaodongjie Ah ... you're welcome ! I thought you meant having given upvotes for me ... =)
@cl-netbox hmm? what is "me" and "you" in your sentences? "me" is me? and "you" is you(cl-netbox)?
@terdon See this question
@xiaodongjie you is you and me is me =) ... nice rhyme isn't it ? :)

Q: Wifi problems with rtl8723be in Ubuntu 14.04

scrabble132I have dual booted my Windows 8 laptop with Ubuntu 14.04. The wifi driver is Realtek rtl8723be. 15:22
@cl-netbox yes, hmm... I'm still not clear. :D
@xiaodongjie okay ... you said : chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/25847089#25847089 and this reads as if you wanted to tell me that you upvoted an answer from me. :)
@cl-netbox yes, I meant that I'm very thank you for your upvote to me.
@xiaodongjie otherwise you should have said : Thank you for the upvotes ... when you wanted to thank me ... clear now ?
@cl-netbox yes, clear. So "you" is me and "me" is you in your sentences.
@terdon Any ideas?
15:27
@xiaodongjie good ... so again : you are very welcome ! :)
@cl-netbox :)
@xiaodongjie yes when I mean YOU I say you ... when I mean ME I say me ... so : upvote for you from me. :)
@shyam No, I don't know much about this sort of thing. You'll need to tell us your exact hardware in order to get help though. For example, try lspci to see what it says about your network card.
@cl-netbox thank you, now very clear.
@xiaodongjie Nice :)
15:29
@cl-netbox Though, Sometimes I feel that I'm very clever.
@xiaodongjie Who says you're not ? These are language things ... I would be glad when I could only understand 1% of Chinese from that what you can express in English. :)
@cl-netbox Thank you again. :)
@xiaodongjie Truly meant - you're welcome again. :)

@terdon See this: imgur.com/p9XkDee
@shyam Good heavens, don't take screenshots of text! Just paste it here. We only care about the last line. The one that shows the network card. But, as I said, I can't help you. I am trying to tell you the sort of thing you should be telling people who can help you.
@terdon I am unable to get the text from that computer to this one! Hence the screenshot! :) But either way, the model number, from the last part of the screenshot, was what I mentioned previously if you check ;)
Ah, that's a good reason then :)
:D
Anyways. Thank you for helping out :) Let me do more research on this.

user136984
@A.B.: Do you know anything about this by the way? :)
17:58
@Seth Hello :) Yesterday I received an un-upvote and immediately after that a re-upvote. So this must have happened accidentally. The un-upvote did count (-10) - the re-upvote did not (0). Do you have an explanation for this ?
@RPiAwesomeness thinkpads are nice, just make sure you check for superfish and this theregister.co.uk/2015/08/12/lenovo_firmware_nasty
or just wipe it and install ubuntu ;)
@ByteCommander When it comes to files, there's no difference between process substitution and pipe. And like terdon said , that's a useless use of cat ( which I still think is still convenient , useless, but convenient). When it's a command, for example ls, we can make process substitution "pretend" to be a file : diff <(ls /home/user/folder1) <(ls /home/user/folder2) Because that way <( . . .) creates file descriptors
> If Windows is installed, the LSE is executed before the Microsoft operating system is launched.
No worries for us then :)
@terdon what is LSE ?
LSD ?
@Serg It's some crapware lenovo installs on some of its machines apparently. Read the link Mateo posted.
18:07
@Mateo Yeah. I was planning on wiping anyways simply because of the amount of bloatware that comes with Windows anydays

Or rather, how visible is it?
My desktop monitors are 1920x1080 and my laptop is much smaller. I definitely notice the difference, but depending on what you're doing, it's not so bad.

How does one make it so that when a certain program is running and a certain keyboard shortcut is pressed that program does something? What I mean is not custom keyboard shortcuts in the settings, but how do I get a program to sort of be on top of all other programs but not at the same time in order for it to respond to these keyboard shortcuts? Well, to put it this way, I am trying to make a clipboard manager...
A new stupid default theme =\
@ParanoidPanda there's already numerous clipboard managers...?

18:25
@RPiAwesomeness well, this one survived clean installs of windows... they put it in the bios
user136984
@A.B.: I did that because I was looking back at some old questions and I found that one and decided that I hadn't actually found a clipboard manager which supported multiple clipboards, so I unaccepted my currently accepted answer and edited my question in hope that I would find an actual clipboard manager that supported that. Your answer is good, and I'll go with it if there is nothing else, but I was just wondering if anybody else had any more input on my question.

@cl-netbox Id did count, check again. There was probably a caching issue.
^^
@cl-netbox i am alright, and you ? Just a bit preoccupied at home
@terdon thank you - no it did not - before that it was 280 and afterwards 270.
@Serg I am fine as well - thank you :)
@cl-netbox Are you sure? Those numbers add up to 270 (including the -10 + 10).
@terdon yes I am - you can see it in my profile - you can see in the screenshot : re-upvote - no points.
@cl-netbox I'm looking at your profile and I can see you got -10 on that post and +10 on it a second later. For some reason it's not shown when you look at reputation per post, but it is shown correctly at reputation by day. That's the screenshot I showed.
18:59
Man, I wish laptops were buildable like desktops :(
More to the point, if you add up the numbers, it makes 270, not 280. Try it.
You have to decide on tradeoffs between everything
@RPiAwesomeness Some are. That's one of the good things about Dell for example.
They have a very good build your own service.

@terdon interesting ... this is what I see : 19 instead of 20 upvotes before it happened ... so 280 would be correct.
19:07
@cl-netbox You're still looking at the reputation by post page. Look at the reputation by day one instead.
@terdon please tell me where this page is ... because when it happened I lost 10 as shown on the top of the AU website. :)
@terdon thank you ... seen ... maybe there is a technical reason behind it ...
@cl-netbox ^^ there
@Zacharee1 @terdon j.mp/freesoftwarepdf <-- This was my presentation for FreeSoftware last year :)
@cl-netbox I guess so, yes.
@GeoMint Nice!
@terdon out of curriosity, how would one "simulate" a here string ?
19:13
?
For example, what would be another way of doing bc <<< "2+2" ?
echo "2+2" | bc ?
@terdon anyway - was just curious to know the reason ... I lost only 10 points, that doesn't really matter, so if this doesn't happen more often, it's no problem at all. :)
:/ hmmm . . . why did i think that's not going to work . . .
@cl-netbox I'm trying to understand if it is a problem. I'm not sure it is. If you did actually lose rep, that's a bug and should be reported. I just don't think you lost any rep.
19:16
@terdon Believe me I did : I had 200+30+50=280 - then it happened and I had 190+30+50=270 ... as it is shown in my screenshot. :)
@cl-netbox There's something strange going on. I don't get how the two pages could be showing different things. Nor how both could add up to 270 if only one is showing the upvote. Let me see.
@terdon Thank you very much :)
Hmm... I'd need 10 more points today for 200.
@cl-netbox have a look at askubuntu.com/reputation that shows the data in text format. What does that one say?
@ByteCommander I see 200 ! =)
19:27
210 now :)
mine: ** total rep 159 :)
total votes: 66
@terdon it says 280
@cl-netbox Damn! Could you show me?
@terdon 2015-12-01 rep +280
I meant the breakdown which shows the post ID and event
Ah! I know what must have happened! Maybe the reupvote came after you'd hit 200 rep so it no longer gives reputation.
19:29
upgrade to wheezy broke the touch driver, but I then found the driver source and recompiled it - it works \o/ I bet I can compile one for a newer ubuntu now
Great, thanks! :D
This is mine :P -1 is for an answer that wrote "install chromium" in a question "firefox is not working" LOL

@terdon It was in the same minute un-upvote and re-upvote.
19:30
so much to do for a touchscreen - grub entry, xorg.conf, compile driver from source.
@cl-netbox Yes, but if the unupvote came when you already had 200 daily rep, the reupvote wouldn't add more. The bug, therefore, is in the profile page displaying +10.
Now I am on 11/150 days with 200 rep for the LEGENDARY badge... That will take another while.
@terdon so it was bad luck - right ? :)
Yup
@terdon Thank you for explaining ! :)
