@Nathan: Oh cool! But you should really make it more obvious, I wouldn't have noticed it if you hadn't of pointed it out.
It's not really supposed to stand out.
@NathanOsman - are you developing this as a userscript for SE or as an SE core developer feature?
@hbdgaf Actually, I had two purposes: (1) I really wanted this feature and nobody else was implementing it and (2) I wanted to see how well WebSockets perform in Go :P
As for #2, so far so good.
@NathanOsman Nice. I was just asking. I hear websockets work quite well. I've seen when I was looking around, a skype clone in the browser that was built that way.
Yup, latency is minimized and so is bandwidth since there's no need for long-polling. (Almost, WebSockets do need a ping sent every 30 seconds or so.)
17:08
I wonder if it actually needs the ping if there is actual traffic? That could be a problem with the spec. It shouldn't.
@ByteCommander yes, i kinda need the help - just kill me so i don't have to deal with this specifications crap anymore
Just use a pipe and redirect Mr. Bullet to Mr. Head...
Nah, don't star it again! it's already on the wall by NathanOsman.
I'm just saying "If traffic, reset counter. If counter exceeded, send ping." It's really simple logic.
Please unstar (probably @ParanoidPanda?)
Chat mods can unstar it if they want to.
17:15
I am no room owner though. At least not here.
And it does not hurt, it's just superfluous.
This is true. I was going to say something about starring it the first time it showed up, but again... superfluous.
@NathanOsman Could you replace "User" with the actual username here?
Not easily.
Because the icon is really tiny and sometimes users have the same or similar icons.
To get that data, I have to use undocumented SE functions.
And I haven't found one that works exactly the way I need.
17:17
@ByteCommander That's a good FR bug.
Well, is any SE chat function documented at all?
No, not really :)
There you see! ;)
I'll see what I can do... that did bug me too.
Anyway, I'll be mobile for most of the rest of the day. Gotta run.
Okay. Shall I add it as GitHub issue formally? Or is that not necessary?
17:18
Sure, go ahead.
Will do!
user136984
@ByteCommander Oh, right, sorry... Done now. :)
I enjoy reading the source code of programs and figuring out how they work that way. If I wanted to figure out "Ubuntu" where would I best start?
@AaronHall Linux kernel.
Don't expect that to be easy, though.
17:25
Linux kernel? For real?
That's the core of Ubuntu. Or what do you want?
Why not? @NathanOsman made a driver for the USB mail notifier thing.
You can as well examine the Unity desktop or whatever software you want.
I dunno, I guess the kernel is as good a place as any to start...
Although if Unity works like an abstract controller sitting on top of it, maybe that would work.
Just get ready for the first beating. It's going to hurt. After that though, you should be fine.
17:27
First beating?
user136984
@AaronHall: Yes, he means that the Linux kernel is violent. ;-)
@AaronHall You're going to make mistakes. I'm going to make mistakes. You have to get over that hump before you're any good at anything. So, just take it and move on.
Totally not implying violence.
Fair enough. bends over, hoping the book he used for padding doesn't show
LOL. Nice one.
Oh lord, save me for I have sinned...while formatting my usb stick, I accidentally removed it...now it won't mount...
user136984
17:36
Sorry, this just reminded me of a Russian animation about two dogs, and one is explaining the clock to the other and tells him that it is just this thing that walks walks, and then goes boom! And the other dog says "So it walks and it fights?"! :D
user136984
Although I don't know if my translation was too direct for you guys to understand the joke.
user136984
@Fabby Probably will though.
@ParanoidPanda I get it.
user136984
Good! :D
user136984
I thought the "walking" bit might confuse a few people as that was the very directly translated part that I had to keep intact for the joke to work, but I didn't know if that was the right way of putting it in English.
user136984
17:39
:D
I don't think it is, but I think the right way of putting is is probably a lot like "You mean it fixes and it breaks?"
in which files locale settings are set?
Or, I don't understand the joke as well as I thought.
@NathanOsman And maybe you could make the grey border around the avatar icon a bit smaller or the rounded avatar itself bigger. What do you think?
user136984
@hbdgaf: No, because when it walks the pendulum swings, when it goes boom it chimes, but the dog took this literally and thought that it walks and also hits/fights.
user136984
17:43
:D
@ParanoidPanda I don't.
user136984
@ByteCommander: When it walks the pendulum swings, when it goes boom it chimes, but the dog took this literally and thought that it walks and also hits/fights.
user136984
Learn Russian, or maybe ask @Fabby for a better explanation/translation... :P
/me is still not laughing... :P
@ParanoidPanda Okay. So, the walking is just the waiting and the going boom is what it really sounds like. That makes sense too.
user136984
17:45
Yes, you're getting there... :D
user136984
I think that the joke is probably funnier in Russian though. :P
Probably. Still a nice apocryphal story though.
Yup, kernel programming is fun.
@ParanoidPanda I do get the sarcasm though. Put what I said earlier next to the sarcasm.
What shall we do with askubuntu.com/q/688202/367990 ? It's half programming/reverse-engineering, half Ubuntu (phone). But it's very unlikely to get any helpful answer.
17:50
\o/
@hg8 I'm here, yes
@ByteCommander that used to be too localised. I don't know what it's called now.
> This describes a problem that can't be reproduced that seemingly went away on its own or was only relevant to a very specific period of time. It's off-topic as it's unlikely to help future readers.
Maybe that? ^
user136984
@ByteCommander: Really seriously. :P
That would make the chat look like a playground then though... :-/
17:58
@ByteCommander Yes, that.
user136984
@ByteCommander: It was a joke. :P
For sure.
user136984
VTC this EOL as off-topic.
@ByteCommander yeah, I can shrink the grey border.
So that it would take less space away.
That would be nice.
18:04
It's something like 5 pixels now and I can shrink it to either 3 or 2. It needs at least a couple pixels though since the dots are 2 pixels taller than the Gravatars.
Yeah, sounds good.
I've got that problem ^
@deostroll Have you read the entire message?
windows is not an option...
The other one I don't understand...
18:24
@Fabby passed the testimonials.
@deostroll Is the device a SoftRAID/FakeRAID?
Its a USB stick
user136984
Odd...
user136984
The script is malfunctioning... :(
Hey why does Ubuntu boot faster when using its own Grub?
18:32
@deostroll Oh, you were the guy that unplugged it during the formatting.
Well, there were some questions about similar cases on the site. DId you google for that already?
I honestly thought it was done...
@deostroll When you plug it in and start gparted, does it show up there? Can you format it from there or recreate its partition table?
McDonald's has free WiFi. Now all they need are free power outlets.
okay I will try that @ByteCommander
user136984
What does blocking someone on GitHub actually mean and do?
18:38
@ByteCommander yep that worked...
user136984
Does it just prevent them from following you or something?
@deostroll Cool. Everything solved?
yes
gparted to the rescue...
Fine. :)

Q: Command-line badge for terdon in close notice?

Paranoid PandaI just noticed the "command-line" badge next to terdon's name in the close notice for one of my questions: And this has just made me really curious, why is it there? And what meaning does it have other than he has got it? Because I have never seen that badge... Nor a badge in a close reason...

@NathanOsman Bad speed or signal strength or security?
Bad speed. TERRIBLE speed. Like 10 Kbps speed.

How do i pass you a pdf tho ?
So if you manage to do get it up within maybe 15minutes or so, I can have a quick glance at it.
@Serg Just beam it.
Ok
@ByteCommander it's gonna take time to scan. Next yime. Go get some rest
Okay. Seeya the other day then, maybe I'll even come to chat riding on the Werewolf! ;D

Q: More Nvidia problems than anything else?

David ColeIn the past 3-4 months I've noticed that on the main site, there is a ratio of about 5:1 referring Nvidia graphics questions than anything else, and I'm wondering why? I do understand that NVidia being a very large distributor, there will be more people asking questions, but even with comparison ...

user139252
Run a high, positive integer (but less than 1000000000) through this function and tell me how long it takes.
user139252
If it takes too long, any suggestions on how I can lower it?
20:46
@ByteCommander @A.B. justbeamit.com/ax6rr
user139252
@serg Any suggestions for trimming down that execution time?
@HeatherBrown i'm illiterate in python
user139252

user139252
I got the result they wanted, but it takes a while
user139252
@Serg @ByteCommander I occasionally code on paper.
user139252
20:50
If I'm out, and I think of a way to solve a problem, I'll write a quick method or script in my notebook.
user139252
@Terdon You're good with python, right?
@HeatherBrown Not in the least. I can barely write a hello world in Python. I'm a Perl geek.
@HeatherBrown what's function supposed to be doing ?
user139252
Given a number, x, I need to determine how to use weights that are powers of 3 to balance a scale.
user139252
For example, 2 would put out "L, R"
user139252
20:56
because you need to put "1" on the side with 2 already, 3 on the other
user139252
balance
user139252
Basically I need a way to return an abstract element in this pattern.
user139252
My function works fine as is, but only for numbers less than about 150000. Anything above takes way too long.
21:12
@HeatherBrown maybe you could try changing the function into a recursive function ?
just a thought
user139252
I'm trying to think of how to do so

@HEatherBrown are you in any way familiar with java ?
user139252

@Serg It's been a while
@HeatherBrown would it be much of a task to ask to take a peak at my java program, look through prof's comments and say what you think over-all ?
user139252
I can try. My mind is kind of currently obsessed with solving this challenge...

Q: Issues with routing

Ronny Ager-WickI have an Ubuntu 14.04 server with one NIC. The MAC address on this NIC is assigned (by the gateway) one IP (X.X.X.100) in one subnet (X.X.X.0/24), with the gateway being in the same subnet (X.X.X.1), and an IP range from a completely different subnet (Y.Y.Y.0/28). I've set up the server with bo...

I already like that codename. Besides it's a squirrel and everybody likes squirrels; and if you don't you
are just another human :)
I don't mind code-names, but I'd like swag that doesn't get dated quickly.
21:42
@Mateo Yup :) Which ones (or all of them?)
user139252
So, what if I converted the number to base 3, added two to every digit, and then did the shuffle of values over three?

hello people
user139252
No, that won't work...
user139252
@Zacharee1 Are you good with Python?
@HeatherBrown so so
user139252
@Zacharee1 Any ideas on making this faster?

I need it get it down to about 10% of that.
@HeatherBrown I could write it in Arduino...
That's a long time
@ByteCommander I code with a fountain pen, in a molskin notebook ;)
@HeatherBrown give me a bit and I'll look at it in more depth

When I was about 20 we got the opportunity to go to IBM and as I was the only one who knew some fortran, I was allowed to use a teletype, made a program consisting of 3 lines, resulting in 3 punched cards, walked over to the compiler, and got 6 cards back: 3 syntax errors as I made a mistake on the first line...

@Zacharee1 Do you only see the message from other people using the script?
@terdon yeah. It's opt-in only, not a virus
Good! I was wondering how that worked. I thought the API made the information available somehow.
Glad it doesn't, really. Though even more kudos to Nathan for figuring out a way to do it.
He has some sort of server set up where the script you install calls the actual program on the server
That script can tell when those who have it installed are typing
23:51
Right.
It also adds some things to the page
somehow
@Fabby You sure I was the one that recommended it? I don't remember ever reading it xD
The script sends the time you start typing and the ID of the last message you've seen to the server app I wrote which then broadcasts it to other users with the script.
@terdon oops. Meant Mark (as Mateo figured out).
@NathanOsman Clever!
Does X run on tty7 or 8 on Ubuntu?
23:53

Thanks
Why is that? It seems like such a random number
No, if we'd wanted random it would have been 9.
Helpful...
@Mateo I did, and he does. I've seen it.
I don't know if he uses a doppleganger/sock now, but at one point he actually visited chat as sabdfl as far as I could tell.
23:59
The answer for 7 is simple.
@Zacharee1 Tradition. It's been on tty7 for at least the past 16 years that I can attest to. I've also seen 8 and 9 more recently. I guess there was a reason way back when.
Because by default there are 6 console TTYs.
The next number is... 7 :P
