Another StackApplet translation! This time it's Galician.
@wisemonkey , that is a great guide
@amith-kk probably. We have had interesting internet outages over the last few days.

howdy @lazyPower
Hola jrg
jrg
jrg
outside of interesting internet outages, how're you?
00:16
Honestly, burnt ;)
Working on putting in another 60 hour week
jrg
jrg
ouch.
can you pretend to take it easy for once?
such is life when you have four projects running concurrently. They discovered a way to burn out the developer with rapid speed. After this "hell week" is over i'm taking some time off.
jrg
jrg
yeah, do that.
otherwise, you'll be burnt out beyond burnout. :P
I mean... rather.. Nothin jrg. Living life like a beach bum :)
jrg

hehe
00:19
So, i've got half my office rolled over to using MSysGit
i feel like a boss having taught the "unteachable" git.
jrg
jrg
YEAH!
hurrah for git Evangelists!
My dodgy slideshow needs some salt. I think i'll do it in HTML/Jquery the next time around
jrg
jrg
i only do slideshows in html now. :P
Seems to be the best bet. You dont run into the off-by-one issue when transferring between office applications.
jrg
jrg
yeah, as long as it pretends to work in IE with chrome frame you're "OK".
00:24
@JohanSJA: Thanks :)
Who uses IE? (cough other than a recorded 60% of the internet population cough)
wats that?
:P
jrg
jrg
chrome frame? or IE? :D
in either case, its surely bad mojo
@lazyPower Are you running StackApplet?
00:32
@GeorgeEdison havent in a while
I stopped being a helpful community member so there wasnt much point in running it to be reminded that i'm slacking in my AU duties.. it served as an eyesore on my ego :P
would you like me to download it and bug-check it?
Only if you're not too busy or anything.
It's not that serious.
aww i always got time for you George. buddy of mine
i owe my C++ success to you
do i grab this from the ppa or fresh from launchpad?
For Ubuntu or Windows?
(Whatever works for you works for me.)
00:38
solid
If you're going with Ubuntu - the PPA please :)

@amithkk PSA: Server is being dropped, no ETA on when it'll be back
@GeorgeEdison found a bug, when registered in the messaging menu its not reporting any rep at all.
let me run it in debug and see if i can get you a helpful stacktrace
It's not reporting rep. in the MM?
no sir
00:43
It only displays the # of unread notifications in the MM.
oh
thats not what i expected, disregard then. wow. epic fail on the end users part.
So most should be 0.
I can't remember exactly but that might be a limitation of the MM API.
Does the config page display correctly?
Yep, Everything is behaving as expected. I've been adding/removing accounts, moving things around, enabling/disabling options trying to get it to freak out. Seems solid. I'll run it for a few days and see if it acts up. Seems really solid though.
Great, thank you!
Anytime
00:48
I'm planning to release 1.5 tomorrow.
...so I just want to be double sure everything is solid.
Thats what i'm running :)
That's the third and final release candidate.
fantastic
I'm excited to say i've watched this applet grow up

sweet :D!
pro points awarded!
@GeorgeEdison I want official mention of my dog in the next stackapplet release :)
(I have not forgotten that 1.4 ate my dog)
(and the license window did not disclaim responsibility for: causing harm to me, my property, my dog, my friends, my neighbours...)
(lol just teasing - there was an application I downloaded when I still used windows (a long time ago) that had a license like that :P
It didn't?
I'm pretty sure the MIT license does.
haha
cool
okay, my dog's spirit can rest in peace
or can it?
01:26
i imagine your dogs spirit can rest easy
after... haunting stackapplet's dreams :>
Poor thing.

I'd be more afraid of Ballmer's head btw :D

01:37
So what are we gonna choose?

+1 to jrg's answer
No problem...

@lazyPower btw, thanks for letting me borrow your gnu screenrc.

@SamSaffron Actually, I'll adjust my answer. Search is the biggest problem. Poor search (both in the ability for search to encompass a problem, and poor ability for users to phrase their real question properly) leads to massive duplication and blurs out good content from great content.

Q: Antivirus For ubuntu 11.10

Deepak RajputPlease suggest best anti-virus for ubuntu 11.10.We had symantec end protection 1.0.1 which is working in ubuntu 10.04 and 11.04,in 11.04 only in gnome. The problem symantec end protection only work in gnome not in unity. So please suggest any other if you can.

Hey guys, just had a crash thanks to KOffice, and now unity interface is really odd (at least I think its unity that is odd). There is no transparency, the alt-tab switcher thing looks like Windows 95, and the workspaces switcher has a slow animation and no orange borders - what did I do??
@Greg Looks like you fell back to a glitched Unity 2d
BBL
13:28
hi
@AmithKK There is never really a reason to troll
5
13:55
So, can I use unity2d instead? My laptop isn't very powerful and I think that was the cause of the crash...
jrg

Well, i think you're already using unity 2d
Is this a dupe?

Q: How can I adjust brightness settings when I am on battery?

ZhEKaI can't find brightness setting for working from battery mode in Ubuntu 11.10 screen settings. There are some settings from Ubuntu 11.04 in gconf, 90% for AC and 60% for battery but it don't works. How can I have my display brightness dim automatically when on battery power?

14:11
@jrg I'd like to get my laptop back to how it was before the crash - it looks like now I'm using unity2d but don't know how to load back into normal unity - I logged out and chose "Ubuntu" rather than "Ubuntu 2d" (I'm assuming that's what that means) and no effect
I've done unity --reset, unity --replace ... still the same
I'd be fine with it apart from the fact that the workspace switcher is really sluggish and I don't know which workspace I'm in
@AmithKK @jrg have you any ideas how to solve this?
jrg
jrg
I'd say this is by design
because if your computer can't run unity 3d,
Add a status-by-design tag. :D
jrg
jrg
then it can't run unity 3d. which means that it needs to use 2d, which means that when you try to login with 3d, it falls back on 2d.
(ok, now i'm confused)
@jrg but I've been using ubuntu 11.10 since it came out with unity 3d with no problems
now I had one crash and it's gone belly up

Q: How do I reset GNOME to the defaults?

jrgI' was playing around with some settings, and now I need to reset GNOME to it's defaults - how do I do that?

that's my best guess
OOOH.
ok, ignore that. just rm -r ~/.compiz*
that should fix it.
rather than resetting compiz settings, that just uh, removes them permanently.
14:19
@jrg cool I'll back it up first... here goes
@jrg ok, now what? restart the computer?
jrg
jrg
logout, then log back in.
(selecting ubuntu at login)
@jrg still the same :/
jrg
jrg
Then I have no clue.
Can you answer this? Bad sound in wine http://askubuntu.com/questions/71992/bad-sound-in-wine #sound

let me clear up some terminologies...
@jrg does "unity" replace "gnome"?
and where does "compiz" lie with unity?
jrg
jrg
14:47
Depends...
unity is a gnome shell
and unity=huge compiz plugin
heh, well I think I've got it to a broken-but-usable state
so I'm happy for now - got to get on with work... will try to fix this tomorrow!
jrg
jrg
sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop - that's what i'd do. :P
Is there the option in 11.10 to use CCSM to decheck unity and drop back (to not using unity), or will you just be left with a broken desktop?
Oli
Oli
@Portablejim That'll leave you with a broken desktop. Change the session type at the login screen. If you use automatic login, just logout and you should see the login screen.

Q: How do I install and use the latest version of GNOME 3?

Martin ZeltinI followed the instructions for compiling the Gnome 3 Shell and it did compiled with a few errors here and there but it didn't run. I installed Gnome 3 Shell using sudo apt-get install gnome-shell but I got version 2.31.x but the latest is 2.91.5 or something. So is there a way for me to install ...

14:59
@Oli ok. I am considering upgrade options (on 11.04) and thinking I might upgrade diagonally and go to Debian
Or maybe a combination of Mint + Gentoo (dual boot).
@Portablejim no point. Upgrade to 11.10, and simply install the DE you want.
No need to use Unity (it's not a forced decision).
15:21
I personally don't see any benefit in running Ubuntu, especially if moving to Debian testing/unstable
Quick question: Why does my terminal close every time it loses focus ?? Ubuntu 11.10 32bit
Oli
Oli
@rlemon sounds like it's crashing... I'd normally say "run it in a terminal" to see the output but that seems foolish in this case :)
use xterm
alt+f2
-> xterm
Oli
Oli
15:36
You could jump to a TTY and run it from there. Control+Alt+F1, run: DISPLAY=:0 gnome-terminal and C+A+F7 to see it. Crash it and then go back to TTY1
xterm is easier :)
Oli
Oli
Or yeah, debug it from another terminal emulator like xterm :)
@RolandTaylor great, as a workaround ok... but I would still like to know why? Fresh install last night - only things i've installed are git, chromium, and all of the updates that have come through. ohh and gedit plugins.
Oli
Oli
I find a solution is better based on the number of keys you have to hold down at once. You're only using two at once @RolandTaylor. That's not for me.
I don't feel I've helped until I've suggested somebody gets their feet on the keyboard.
i use my nose..
works for light switches when your hands are full as well.
15:38
@rlemon I meant...
run xterm, and then run gnome-terminal from inside :)
Oli
Oli
I played something ages ago that required a mouse, the number-pad and... the space bar. I remember using my elbow for some of the moves in that
@RolandTaylor ahhh.. ok will try that.

@Oli wow... you're so 1999!

bahaha, turns out they wern't crashing they were hiding themselves.. along with every other window I had had open since last night - I guess a few more updates came through and were causing a glitch in my Unity to show nothing running and at the same time never close what you opened.
rebooted and alls fine
@RolandTaylor I know you're careful about what you post. I'd like to read some of the dialog some time, that's my favourite part of any book. I'd love to see a sample of a scene with lots of dialog.

@WarriorIng64 I think this can be closed as a duplicate of the meta question about software for askubuntu
Do you have a link I can use when flagging it?

@WarriorIng64 no need to flag, I'll just close it
@StefanoPalazzo Okay, thanks.

Hello all
thanks for bringing it up. A link to the dupe is always better than some half-hearted answer

okay, eveything's cool. I though there might be a problem if I migrate the question twice, but it's just recognized that there already is a copy on meta.
wait, its auto?

- -A INPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 3306 -j DROP
could anybody explain me that rule pls
?
@AmithKK Yes. Migrating a question means closing it as off topic. You then get a chance to say that it belongs on another site, and it'll be "re-posted" there, on behalf of the OP. which means the original question is merely "closed as off-topic", and it's title is changed automatically.
oh
@Bakhtiyor no idea :)
