does anyone know how I can get into any one of my routers so I can configure the settings?

So yesterday I tried to remove my ATI drivers on ubuntu 11.10, to install a newer version (the newer version told me to!). When I rebooted (before installing the new one, because it still told me the old one was installed), it did not show up an interface at all. I had to start in recovery mode to get into terminal, then I ran the driver install. Now I do get a ubuntu loading screen but it gets stuck at 5 dots of loading...
Currently I am back in windows :x anything I can try to get past the loading screen?
These commands caused it:
sudo apt-get remove –purge xorg-driver-fglrx fglrx*
sudo apt-get install –reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri fglrx-modaliases
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
sudo apt-get install –reinstall xserver-xorg-core
Oli
Oli
I assume you mean -- instead of - for those reinstall and purge arguments? I'm not sure how that would effect it.
Tom
Tom
@Oli hmm, yes I think so.. not sure whether I used -- or - anymore
Oli
Oli
Drop to a terminal (control+alt+f1) log in and then check to make sure the reinstalled packages are still installed using apt-cache policy libgl1-mesa-glx, etc
Tom
Tom
I think I just need a set of commands that will completely re-install everything graphics related (xserver, gnome, drivers)
@Oli alright, thanks. I need to reboot to do that so I will be back in 15 minutes or so
what do I need to do afterwards?
Oli
Oli
@Tom Hang on a second.
Tom

Oli
Oli
@Tom Does the computer have a wired internet connection?
Tom
Tom
@Oli hmm, no, I'm afraid not
Oli
Oli
That's a shame. I was going to suggest you upload a few log files but your wireless networking won't come up automatically (it needs the graphical network manager to load up).
Tom
Tom
@Oli can I access those files from windows?
I have a dual boot setup
Hmm, I guess not, I cannot see my ubuntu drive on my windows installation
maybe I could copy them to my windows drive from the terminal (I can access the windows drive from ubuntu)
Oli
Oli
Well in that case, run ls -l /var/log/Xorg.0.log. You should see a date. If it's today's date (and close to the time you booted) we know X is trying to load. If it is today's log have a look inside to see what the problems are (using less /var/log/Xorg.0.log). Scribble those down (the end of the file is where all the useful schnizz happens)
12:59
Yes!
amith-desktop is back on
Tom
Tom
@Oli what's the command to copy /var/...0.log to /media/sda3/....0.log ?
Oli
Oli
@Tom If you have it fsab-mounted, that's great. If not, it won't have automatically mounted. You can still mount it, you just have to learn how to use the mountcommand :)
Tom
Tom
doh I guess you are right.. I setup ubuntu to mount it on startup but that probably requires the xserver
Oli
Oli
@Tom cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log /media/sda3/
Tom
Tom
thanks I will try these things then. I am on this chat on my smartphone
Oli
Oli
13:01
@Tom That's no major issue just run sudo mount /dev/sda3 /media/sda3
Congrats @StefanoPalazzo @Oli !
Oli
Oli
If mount moans about /media/sda3 not existing, just mount it on /mnt and copy there: sudo mount /dev/sda3 /mnt and cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log /mnt/
And you might need sudo for the cp depending on how mount decides to mount things.

@Tom yeah that should be as simple as just [re]moving the /etc/X11/Xorg.conf file

Oli

@Tom So what's the current status? Unity not showing? Can you install the proprietary drivers?
Tom
Tom
@Oli see above img
What does that mean?
Oli
Oli
13:34
Okay that top bar is a bug in nautilus/the-way-unity-is-hacked-in. Don't worry about it. Unity isn't loading. And that's because you don't have accelerated graphics.
Or at least the drivers for them
The next step is to ignore that and install some drivers.
Assuming you have networking, run back to a terminal and run sudo jockey-text
That'll download and install the proprietary drivers. One more reboot and you should be where you was before you nuked fglxr :)
Tom
Tom
I am instqllin proprietary drivers now

Oli
Oli
This would have been so much simpler if network manager had a command-line client to start a wireless connection. You could have done this right away and have been back in business about an hour ago.
Tom
Tom

Typing on phone is hard :(
Oli

@Tom Installed from jockey or from your own download?
Tom

Oli
Oli
13:41
@Tom Are you following all the steps of the installer? I've just seen this: help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI
Looks like it's a lot more complicated than just running a few things - you have to make it build you a set of fglxr packages.
And note that command contains Maverick-specific things. At the very least you'll need to change maverick for oneiric
Tom
Tom
;( I just want to go back to the default drivers
Like when you install a fresh install
Oli
Oli
@Tom I honestly don't know how to revert a system to the open source drivers. I'd tell you if I did. But the quickest way I can get you up and running would be just to run jockey-text as root in a terminal. That will run off, install fglxr from the repos. If you want to persist with the latest driver, this is the best documentation I can find
Tom
Tom
I will try jockey
@oli it returns nothing
Sigh
Takes so long to copu the img url
Finally @Oli
Oli
Oli
13:57
You might need to stick --check or --auto-install on the end of sudo jockey-text
Hell, you're in a graphical environment now, you could just run jockey-gtk
Tom
Tom
Again nothing returned
Nice
I love GUIs, I think.
My memory does not like commands.
@Oli Can you summarize the history with @Tom for me (i.e. what has been done) ?
Oli
Oli
14:14
@Portablejim He removed flgxr, etc in order to install the latest driver from ATI. On rebooting, X wouldn't load because its config wanted fglxr still. We nuked the xorg.conf and X loads but Unity doesn't (I assume it's on the VESA driver and/or the open driver doesn't support the hardware - but we haven't checked). I suggested just reverting to the repo version of the ATI closed driver through Jockey or following the full instructions for manually installing the closed drivers.
Not sure where we are now. Any news @Tom?
Tom
Tom
@Oli everything works again, thanks for your continuous support!
Though I have a feeling these drivers are not that great, when I drag icons around it stutters a lot. This is why I tried to install the binary drivers in the first place
but at least I am back in business
Oli
Oli
@Tom I think that's a Compiz/mouse-polling bug. I get the same with Nvidia.

Thanks, I will give this setup a week or so though, maybe I'll get used to it. But I think I will hide the top bar, I see absolutely no reason why it has to be cluttering my screen all the time

@Tom Unity is based on GNOME 3, and it is a shell for GNOME :)
GNOME 3 as everyone refers to it == GNOME Shell
Tom
Tom
Oh
Oli
Oli
"Gnome" is like fifteen different things. A general umbrella development project (like "Apache"), a desktop framework (inc GTK, et al), a Desktop environment (was panels, now officially shell). It's easy to see why people get confused.
gnome is a set of tools.

Tom
I don't want to be a whiner (which so far I have proven to be), but doesn't unity feel somewhat less smooth? Maybe it's just the window dragging that is influencing the overall feeling of it, though.
I don't know about you but it is just fine here.

Artur SapekEach time I set the $PYTHONPATH on my new Ubuntu server machine (old Thinkpad) and reboot, it's reset to blank. I've got 7000 songs in Banshee and I left it playing on random from my library. I went into another room and started playing with our SqueezeBox playing various versions of All Along The Watchtower on Spotify.

When I got back to my PC, what is Banshee playing? Jimmy Hendrix, All Along The Watchtower. What are the chances?!
Well. I guess they're about 7000:1... But that was rhetorical.

@JorgeCastro Just saw the other answer where you say you will give a bounty to this one, I really did not copied it or intended to steal the information from the user, learned it yesterday while trying to move the launcher icons around after creating one for marlin, even created a script for that (its not finished so I wont post it, its work in progress). (and by intend to steal I mean that I only saw the other answer after making mine)
I've put a bounty on this one:

George EdisonI was reading through the Ubuntu Developer Programme Agreement for submitting applications to the Software Center and stubled across the following clause: 3.1 You must first test Apps you submit to confirm they are compatible with all currently supported versions of Ubuntu (as listed on Canon...

@GeorgeEdison looks like there is already a very good answer there, you only disagree on the "download 5 versions" part?

@brunopereira81 Well, bandwidth is a bit of an issue on my end.
@GeorgeEdison send me a pm with an address, ill ship the cds/dvd to you (its an honest offer, really)
but I understand your point
Thanks anyway, but that's okay.
If they allow chroot environments, that would solve all of the problems.
maybe testing can be given to other ppl other then the developer? I understand that it would still be a lot of work but if ppl are available that can be possible. ( really dont know anything about releasing an app in ubuntu, just talking).
Yeah, it would be nice if they explained exactly what they had in mind.
