@jrg Sorry about missing your question, but the answer is that I'm just creating a site with HTML 5 and CSS3. Hopefully going to end up making it my personal website, but I still have quite a bit of things to figure out.

user26781
Good morning.
user26781
Is anyone online here?
Hi @jasoncruz98
user26781
I need help.
user26781
4 hours ago, I installed Ubuntu 11.10 as a dual-boot to my Windows 7 operating system.
08:14
what's the problem?
user26781
The main reason I switched to Ubuntu is because of Compiz Fusion
user26781
After getting help from another askubuntu member, I installed and configured compiz fusion on my laptop.
Configuring Compiz may be dangerous...
...things can break
user26781
However, after I installed some updates, I was required to restart and when I did, the whole screen crashed and I couldn't touch anything.
user26781
Even the CTRL+ALT+T shortcut couldn't bring up the Terminal.
08:17
Empty wallpaper or freeze?
user26781
freeze.
Ctrl+alt+print+REISUB?
user26781
I had nothing else to do but install Ubuntu 11.10 again.
user26781
Now I configured compiz fusion, but I'm too scared to shut down.
What did you configure?
user26781
08:19
@Takkat what is Ctrl+alt+print+REISUB?
Magic SysRQ - a safe way to power off and reboot
user26781
I configured Wobbly Windows, Water Effect, Paint fire on the screen
Is it all working ok?
user26781
Desktop Cube, 3D Windows, and Cube deformation
user26781
yes it is all working ok for me
user26781
08:21
How do I auto-configure Compiz at startup?
Compiz should keep your settings for the next restart.
That's why you have a problem if you broke something
user26781
Are you sure?
If only one of the effects does not play nice with your GPU you will not be able to login to your session..
Can you answer this? pkexec vs. gksu/gksudo http://askubuntu.com/questions/78352/pkexec-vs-gksu-gksudo #security
Then it's quite hard to undo all from a terminal
Even more so as you don't know exactly which setting it was that broke your desktop

^^graphic card/dfriver
user26781
Ok I did some experimenting, and I found this file:
user26781
file:///usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/ubuntu.session
user26781
Inside it was something like this:
user26781
[GNOME Session]
Name=Ubuntu
Name[eo]=Ubuntuo
RequiredComponents=gnome-settings-daemon;
RequiredProviders=windowmanager;panel;
DefaultProvider-windowmanager=compiz
DefaultProvider-panel=compiz
IsRunnableHelper=/usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test
FallbackSession=ubuntu-2d
DesktopName=Unity
user26781
08:33
@Takkat By giving you this information, does this mean Compiz and its effects will load on startup the next time I reboot?
user26781
I'm just scared something will break...
If you don't know what exactly was the problem last time, it may happen again.
Unity3D/Compiz should start fine however, when they are running fine now.
08:45
st00pid cooler was a fake

I'll wait for 01-01-01
We may be able to chat from heaven by then...

i decided to make 01-01-01 the date i'll marry :P
lol
This is bad luck - marriages on those days won't last long
and a major drawback by then is - you won't be able to have kids
09:37
yeah, but i don't think it's a problem with the date - rather with couples that choose such dates being morons. :P
(not in general of course ;))
yay, shopping day.
People that choose 01-01-01 are mummies
i hate shopping.
that's for sure :D

clothes :-o
Clothes, shoes and handbags are taboo
09:40
i'm so weirdly sized that it's like lottery :D
yeah, clothes and shoes it is... already woke up depressed :D
Me too - one of the biggest stores in Baden-Württemberg don't have my size
women's eyes sparkle - mine say "get off"
So I have no reason to go there \o/
but what do you do, if you need something urgently?
I shop online.
(well I let shop online)
09:42
but they don't deliver within hours :P
i like esprit with their return policy
(online)
Every now and then one of those parcels has also stuff for me in it.
Esprit is great.
At least they have my size of trousers
I wanted to make a deal that for every 10 items in clothes I am allowed to order 1 item for computing.
Did not work.
I could open a PC store by now.
09:45
10 pairs of socks + a new TFT :D
time flies. already almost 11am. :-(

There is something fishy here: how can you deactivate a password of an admin?
And have the account deactivated as a whole... strange.
@user15533 it is not advisable. This is not the brainstorm site.

so i discovered what my issue was yesterday with my ec2 instance... if anyone caught that and has to do this in the future.. fo ra production box to send email from EC2, you have to submit a request to be allowed to do so. They throttle reverse dns lookups which will thwart your MTA if you dont. and its in the FAQ's so RTFM if you go that route.
and the approval process takes from 4 to 24 hours
yeah, it was a huge ordeal yesterday, i didnt have an elastic ip on my instance, biggest duh moment of the day so i assign it to the -production instance server and boom, we have outage as it changed the dns entry, public visible downtime, everybody paniced my phone blew up... it got messy to say the least. Just glad yesterday is over
Future me is gonna hate life on monday, but thats up to future me.. i'll let him worry about it.

Been working on that HTML5 site I started yesterday, and here's the progress so far: imgur.com/SBlzT
I do need some suggestions though
I am not here.
@MarcoCeppi i do too, i didnt rtfm before i undertook this endeavor and it was my downfall. Their support is pretty awesome though. I'll give them that, they saved my bacon.
Should I make some custom mouse-over buttons for the links in the nav bar, or should I just change the text properties of the links so that they have special effects on mouseover or something like that?
Mmm bacon

jokerdinoThe description that comes up with the privilege of retagging questions notes that when mistakes are made when using tags, like using spaces instead of hyphens, we should retag them. I guess the newer users of the site do not know that a hyphen should be used instead of space for compound words. ...

Hi, so today I finally decided to update ubuntu 10.10 to 11.10. After 6 hours of updating I decided I should update new ATI drivers. It told me to first remove fglrx, so I executed some commands (from google) and rebooted. Now I'm getting a black screen without any feedback on login and the interface just won't load.
Any ideas what I can do or search for?
These commands caused it:
sudo apt-get remove –purge xorg-driver-fglrx fglrx*
sudo apt-get install –reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri fglrx-modaliases
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
sudo apt-get install –reinstall xserver-xorg-core
it also gave some warning about fglrx-modaliases not existing or something like that.
try: cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
if you can execute anything
Tom
Tom
@rafalcieslak I can, when I boot in recovery mode it gives me a terminal
@rafalcieslak that requires me to reboot.. anything else I can try? it takes me about 5-10 minutes to reboot, try and boot back to windows
18:56
well
it seems you are simply left without any drivers
neither the open-source, neither the proprietary ones
Tom
Tom
can I not install the proprietary ones from the terminal?
yes you can! but that's the fglrx, which you wanted to remove, right?
Tom
Tom
@rafalcieslak no I wanted to install it, and it told me to first remove the old version
so I did that and rebooted
but now I cant install the new version because I have no GUI
and I am no console person
ah! you shouldn't have rebooted until it asked you to do so ;)
have you downloaded the driver installer?
i mean:
