What should the close reason be for questions in other languages?
@suli8: from terminal you can install: sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
Then you can safely remove any ppa that may have caused troubles and restore the default settings.
by: sudo ppa-purge <badpackagename>
pa-purge has no installation candidate
ppa
@Takkat i think i have no ppa like this.
@Takkat yes, i miss wrote it here... i did ppa
it's not available
18:04
ppa-purge is still in the repos fro oneiric, I just checked that.
If you had installed xorg-edgers you may want to sudo ppa-purge xorg-edgers.
@Takkat it says: package is missing has been obsoleted or is only availabe from another source
you're on 11.10?
yes
I mean I just installed it the other second... :/
after ifollowed that askubuntu.com/questions/67792/… it got worse and i can't reach the lightdm.
18:07
it's in universe repos, maybe not activated?
gksudo software-properties-gtk
@htorque i will try now
tick the universe repo if it isn't ticked, sudo apt-get update, sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
@htorque i can't get any gui
Hi @htorque :)
hi @Takkat!

Q: What will happen if I install Wayland?

George EdisonI am curious about the progress being made with Wayland and would like to perhaps give it a spin. According to the Launchpad page, it is packaged in Oneiric (and has actually been packaged since Natty). Therefore I can simply install it by running: sudo apt-get install wayland-demos However, I...

@suli8 oh, sorry, missed that
@htorque it says gtk warning cannot open display
i'm in netroot "drop to root shell prompt with networking. is that where i'm supposed to be?
do: cat /etc/apt/sources.list
find this
deb archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu oneiric main restricted multiverse universe
if it doesn't exist, create it (sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list, edit, ctrl+o, enter, ctrl+x)
@htorque it says bash: cat/etc/apt/sources.list no such file
@htorque ok
there should be a space after the 'cat'!
18:14
@htorque i'm in the nano. i can see the list
This is wrong:

A: Will the switch to Wayland fix not being able to paste from closed windows?

SergeyWell, I don't think it's a bug as such, it's rather a feature which has some unintended consequences :) Moreover, my understanding is that other "clipboard managers", i.e. in Windows, work in a very similar way - when Copy operation is performed, the application just notifies the clipboard manage...

> "...Moreover, my understanding is that other "clipboard managers", i.e. in Windows, work in a very similar way..."
do you see other stuff?
@htorque what should i look for?
@suli8 it should contain those lines: paste.ubuntu.com/713487
plus some comments (lines that start with "#")
@htorque yes yes
18:23
@suli8: are all of the lines htorque pasted for you in your sources.list?
@Takkat i have main, main restricted mltiuniverse. yes
you need universe
in fact you need main restricted universe multiverse
which lines i should add?
@Takkat no universe just multiuniverse for me here.
that does not exist.
@suli8 just add universe to the lines
then save (ctrl+o, enter) and quit (ctrl+x)
18:29
@htorque add universe before every multiverse with all the lines?
you can put it at the end as well
@htorque done
save, quit
sudo apt-get update, sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
sudo ppa-purge xorg-edgers
no sudo needed when in root shell ;)
ah
only read half of the story
18:34
But we are all so much used to sudo...
yeah, i need a root shell maybe once or twice every cycle
@htorque it is not working
what is not working
what error do you get
@htorque i added universe but when i install the ppa-purge it says, that it's not available, means it's missing or obsoleted etc... ppa-purge has no installation candidate
to say the truth, i don't remember that i had the edgers ppa.
-.-
try this: apt-get install ubuntu-desktop ubuntu-standard ubuntu-minimal
18:39
i got an update from recommended updates. and it failed
@htorque ok
if it says something like "bla bla, you must manually run 'dpkg -- configure - a' to correct", then run that command.
@htorque after i do "y". it failed to contact the server
thank you so much for your time. even if the problem still there. i have to go to work now :(
i posted a question, and will check your suggestions there
good, cya
thanks. no matter what i love the community and linux
back (boy poured a full mug of hot chocolate all over the carpet)
jrg
jrg
@Takkat Sounds like something my brother would do.
In our family there is only one person that does this regularly... :/
I did that as well when I was a boy :D
@jrg you have a nice brother then!
if he does that regularly, then 1. why do you have a carpet? 2. why does he still get choclate? :D
Because I love him?
jrg
jrg
@Takkat Yup. :D
18:49
always that...
:D
All people that are capable of pouring chocolate are nice!
19:03
so that makes me super nice? my aunt used to have a chocolate shop and I can pour like the best >:)
This indeed makes you super nice :) Hi
i don't see this

jrg
Unity 2D vs. 3D bug then?

jrg
jrg
19:07
Yeah, true.
I'd say it's a bug then.

I wasn't around most of the morning. :(

maybe you should be able to buy some more votes

jrg
jrg
@htorque I'd pay a buck to have another 10 votes.
they don't trade votes at ebay
jrg
jrg
Ok, I'm out of votes. Finally.
19:19
I think that good flags should eventually add up to more votes for that day
i meant rep for votes :D
jrg
jrg
Lose rep, get more votes? Almost like bounties? :D
Or, rather, confirmed positive actions should gain you additional votes

I might ask on Meta
you'll get the marshal badge

@JorgeCastro Be careful, Mr. 6383 edits. I'm coming up fast with 339! I'll have you beat in.... four years or so.... :D

is "every minute I spend with this guy I'm not spending with someone who needs help."
20:03
he needs help. really. :P
Wow that guy makes me look like... idk...
I know that unity is unpopular with some people, but constructive criticism is good, not ranting

jrg
@RolandTaylor Makes you look like a perfect Unity loving angel. ;)
Makes me look... friendly....
Almost to the point of poke Jorge saying people cough might cough actually listen to me :P... poke poke

Odd, back now.
can someone explain what alt+` does in 11.10 ?
jrg
jrg
Doesn't do anything here.
it does here if you hold down alt
brings up a window switcher
jrg
jrg
Must be Unity 3D (or just Unity 2D with metacity)
oh, that would be nice if it worked with chrome
20:31
it seems to be for switching between windows of the same application
I see how it works in thunderbird - shows open tabs, but chrome doesn't do anything
jrg
jrg
doesn't do anything here with terminal
Hm, looks like this is deserving of a bounty, since Thunderbird is the default, and I can't get any of these to work now... - askubuntu.com/questions/493/… (cc @Jorge, since you mentioned we should bring bounties to you)
20:44
@RolandTaylor like that better
@jrg ooh awesome, on it
I am out of bounties, but next one I will do it
21:04
@JorgeCastro have you heard from anyone using the AU lens?
not yet
no OMG coverage yet. :-/
it's ok, we want to make sure that they get the working packages
which means that I probably need to upload pygobject again

Q: Is there an AskUbuntu lens available for 11.10?

Schism430I have been searching around for an AskUbuntu lens recently that's compatible with 11.10. So, could anybody give me a hand and either show me how to get one, or tell me when one comes out? Help is appreciated!

@jrg keep 'em coming! at least 20 more of those flags. :D
jrg
jrg
@htorque :D
21:33
I need something to flag :)
should i add a fake "me too" somewhere? :P

@MarcoCeppi Are you running Unity 2D or 3D on your netbook?
@htorque sure, then we can get @MarcoCeppi to ban you ;)
registering a new user and getting all those badges again! cool!
don't worry, I fully expect to get thrown out of the ubuntu development team at any minute :)
21:40
YOU ARE FIRED!
see what I mean?
ok, I'm packing up my toys & going home now
@ajmitch Did you guys get my update?
@GeorgeEdison which update was that?
about the AU data server?
Yeah.
I fixed the threading code and I'm working on storing the replay data.
OK
I'm tempted to just delete my whole launchpad bug folder, might be easier than reading them
21:53
why not delete all launchpad bugs and start over? :)
that's what I just said
i wonder how many invalid bugs that would remove :)
not only YOUR bug folder :)
maybe a few
funny, that rabbit vcs question that just came through fits nicely with askubuntu.com/questions/69104/… which I answered yesterday
not really a dupe though
22:08
Can you answer this? Subversion 1.7 Binary http://askubuntu.com/questions/65468/subversion-1-7-binary #ppa
People who were asking for a PPA the day after it was released... I looked for one then
22:30
ooh nice work on that upstream link bug
would upvote, but "Daily vote limit reached; vote again in 1 hour."
good night all!
Goodbye!
@JorgeCastro yeah some quick editing in the gimp made it pretty simple - I felt that it really needed some images
some links on launchpad are still a bit hard to find :)
that rabbit one is a dupe
on the one one of the upstreams commented
oh?
I must have missed it sorry
voted to close
22:36
found it
@JorgeCastro the LP lens should be semi-working now, I just scheduled another build for it in the PPA
rock
I'll update in a bit
vps.ajmitch.net.nz/~ajmitch/LPlens_.png for an example of it 'working'
it's slow & I need to find some way to interrupt searches
since I can close the dash & unity-launchpad-daemon can still be trying to fire results through
you might want to ping james_w
a while back he had a way to cache/offline lp queries
since they're basically brutally slow
yeah, and you can imagine what it's like doing it from NZ
22:49
heh
at least lifeless understands my LP speed problems :)
he's been totally fixing them too
he's brutal
yeah, he's impressively dedicated with that
maybe we can get him to give a performance talk at kiwi pycon next year :)
I need to learn english better, I read the answers that I submit & wish that I had an editor sitting over my shoulder
23:07
I've got like my own private table on this train. I think trains may be more luxurious than I thought.
with internets?
I'm on the train right now
Wifi and all
Not bad, is it free?
The train ride wasn't but the wifi is
Not better to start a private room and talk about the train there?
23:09
So 'free' in that it's included in the ticket price
@ajmitch Correct. I'll be able to watch a movie and continue using Ask Ubuntu \o/
lunch time for me, I think I shall return to finding questions to answer later :)
Nice! File transfer progress on the launcher :D

Who owns the bit.ly URLs for the software center/package icons? They should point at i.stack.imgur.com, not i.imgur.com. I'm still seeing a whole load of missing images all over the site.

DoR
DoR
@Oli what bit.ly urls are you referring to?
Oli
Oli
Good point. The ones for the software center icons
an update to 11.10 was running and I restarted, how should I find it to continue?
23:51
@Oli According to bit.ly they cannot be changed once created.
Oli
Oli
@GeorgeEdison Well that's mildly vexing.
I am willing to lend a subdomain and host the images myself for the time being.
Would that work? Then if we ever change our mind, I can set up a CNAME record to point the domain elsewhere.
Oli
Oli
@GeorgeEdison That's not the problem - the problem is we have however many thousand instances of that URL throughout the site. I'll email Imgur and see if they can either indefinitely fix those images or put a custom redirect to redirect that URL to the i.stack version
@Oli imgur?

Where the images are hosted

Well, that's certainly worth a try.
