@RPiAwesomeness: the latest make/humble bundle might interest you
01:37
@JourneymanGeek Oh?
@Seth Seth...are you posting naughty pictures?
01:48
@RPiAwesomeness are you free to help me?
@RPiAwesomeness nope. no idea what virusboy meant.
Was probably a joke.
@edwardtorvalds the best way to ask a question is to just ask. Then, if someone can help they will.
Pinging random people is considered rude, unless you are continuing a discussion from a post on the main site.
disk size in system settings > Details is showed as 210GB but when i check by any command line it shows 196GB, why?
What commands are you using to check?
02:02
@Seth Ah, good
@edwardtorvalds 210*(1000/1024)^3
@edwardtorvalds I can try :)
@RPiAwesomeness disk size in system settings > Details is showed as 210GB but when i check by any command line it shows 196GB, why?
02:03
damned google links
@thanks muru
@RPiAwesomeness my doubt is clear, by muru, thanks btw
My best guess would be that Details is showing the total disk space, while the command line is showing the space available that isn't reserved for the OS? Dunno.
Oh. Of course.
@NathanOsman Would you reccommend a QTextBrowser to show a lot of plain text?
1024 Bytes per Gigabyte vs 1000 Bytes per Gigabyte.
@RPiAwesomeness yeah I totally forgot about that too.
We should make a new standard! /joke
02:05
why they change this?
@muru why to the power 3 ?
@edwardtorvalds It's not a change, it's just two different ways of measuring Gigabytes.
I think the 1024 method takes into account the file system pointer thingy? Dunno.
1024 is the proper way right?
Rather, 1024 Bytes to the Megabyte - not Gigabyte :P
Wait...is it? I'm confused
@edwardtorvalds We're talking Gigabytes, right?
02:07
Playstation 1. When the games where still challenging yet fun and the start/select button actually did something.
Aka 1024^3?
Kilobyte.
1024 Bytes == 1 KB.
02:07
thanks
Thus, 1024 ^ 3 == 1 GB.
yup
thanks everybody
@edwardtorvalds lol, np :)
02:08
so only ubuntu uses 1000 thing right?
1000 would seem to be the proper way, Microsoft just uses 1024 'cause NTFS File System Table thingy
thanks
@RPiAwesomeness from things i have learnt 1024 is the way used by computers
@edwardtorvalds No, 1000 is actually the proper way
I was always curious why I only had 7.8 GB of RAM vs the 8 GB that the stick said I had.
becoz some space is reserved by filesytem to work
@RPiAwesomeness that's probably not due to 1000/1024
02:11
@muru It is, read the blog post.
the conversion there would be 7.4G, as you would see in pendrives
Plus, it's RAM. I expect to see less available space on storage.
@RPiAwesomeness 8*(1000/1024)^3
muru si right
2^10 = 1024 and not 1000, since every number used by computers are the power of 2,hint computer uses binary
@muru can you give a link on why ubuntu does this?
Oh duh. I can be so dumb some times.
I was thinking straight metric Mega & Giga. :P
02:27
@muru hmm, yes.
Also, what's up with all those tag wiki edits? o_O
can someone show me an article on why ubuntu uses 1k=1000 ?
02:47
@edwardtorvalds Well, the decision isn't Ubuntu's but GNOME's.
since most of the software you see (Nautilus, GNOME Disks) come from GNOME.
@Seth NewUser probably looking for that tag badge

A.B.Your Ubuntu is too old. Upgrade your system and the PPA (ppa:claydoh/kmymoney2-kde4) will work. Why do I see so often close votes for EOL on questions about 12.04!!??
It will stay alive another 2 years guys!
@A.B. Did you VTC for EOL on that question?
Yes. It's not EOL?
It's not for another 3 years.
Or maybe 2.
Sorry, retracted.
You see, it's called LTS for a reason.
Ok, sorry again.
@ByteCommander retracted, sorry
10:41
@A.B. Okay, good! :)
See, LTS means 5 years support.
So 04/2012 + 5 years = 04/2017, so two more years to go...

I have a major misconception about how the kernel handles the filesystems. Each filesystem is loaded into an inode table when mounted, then how do modifications take place? First on the table and then on the physical disk? Also a link would be very helpful. I can't find anything on this specific topic
What do you guys think about my new canned comment:
> One does not log in as root or use root shells if he doesn't exactly know what he does! Huge security issue and a great chance for the viruses called "typo" and "lack of knowledge", that have infected almost every interface between keyboard and chair and show symptoms from time to time, to destroy your system...
I believe it is funny and useful, isn't it?
@NewUSer I've had to decline most of your "Low Quality" flags. Remember, that flag is generally only used if the question or answer is beyond redemption. With a bit of careful editing or posting a pointed comment or two, most questions and answers can be salvaged. Thanks.
12:49
Is there any purpose to install JDK on wine?
I mean - we have Oracle-JDK and OpenJDK for Ubuntu, so why should one want to install the Windows Java Dev Kit with wine?
Are there any differences that would be a reason for this? Or just dumbness?
@kos you'll have to read source code docs to get this level of detail...
Normally, what happens is:
1/ You write to the journal
2/ If journal is successful, update inode table
Morning Fabby!
Not seen for a while...
@ByteCommander Morning...
other things to do, like installing a dimmer now...
How are you succeeding with your Docker studies?
@ByteCommander It is strongly discouraged to log on as root or use root shells expecially when performing actions an end-user is not familiar with.
Huge security issues and a great chance for viruses called "typo" and "lack of knowledge", have infected almost every interface between keyboard and chair and will eventually destroy your system...
@ByteCommander meh... Not really!
12:57
@kos Sounds like a good question for Unix & Linux.
Too bad...
/me also has to prepare for one more presentation (Chemistry again), hand in a Physics protocol tomorrow and study for the final oral exam in history in some weeks... :P
kos
kos
@Fabby So actually normally it's the contrary, first write to the disk than update the table. Which makes way more sense. Thanks, altough I don't think I'll dig into the kernel documentation for this. Perhaps if I don't find anything else.
@terdon That's what I was thinking. Probably going to post there shortly
@kos EXT4 is a journalled file system. The journal IS on-disk!
:P ;-)
kos
kos
@Fabby What do you mean? Everything is read / written directly to the disk? Isn't the filesystem virtualized in the inode table? (e.g. for tasks like fast access through ls)
Also @ByteCommander not that I can see, Java is cross-platform, so no there should be no pratical differences in developing / compiling on the same JDK over two different OS
13:03
It's actually written to the cache (+inode update in RAM), the cache is flushed to the journal, the journal then updated to disk and only then the inode update on disk follows...
as I said: RTFM depending on how much detail you need.
@kos Means I am right telling the guy who asked how to install 32bit JDK on 64bit machine through wine that he should use OpenJDK or Oracle-JDK instead.

@Fabby Thanks, I'm missing quite a bit here. Going to ask this on U&L

@ByteCommander I don't know if the IDEs differ in something (you should ask some Java guy), but for sure what's compiled on JDK on Ubuntu will be compiled the same on JDK on Windows

@kos probably not. I doubt it is the same... some flags will be different I would assume
@kos A JDK does not bring any IDEs...
kos
kos
@Fabby Yes, but I have still google :D The point here is I just need a rough picture of everything, which creating for myself by digging the kernel documentation would be quite a bit of a pain. If I don't understand something I can still ask another question :D
I once asked a question on U&L and got a perfect answer...
Unfortunately, the answer didn't help me a lot...
kos
kos
13:16
@Rinzwind Yes you're probably right, what I meant is being Java cross-platform it should be the same for the average user, whoever needs to set particular flags it's probably also able to handle the differences in a different OS
@ByteCommander Likely, I've never used JDK :D no IDE?
I am trying to root my device. The problem is fasboot does not recognise the device. The solution on this given for windows os is to update the device drivers. What should be the solution for Linux? I guess I should try using the 4.0.x kernel.
kos
kos
@Fabby I'll try my luck. I'll specify that I want a general answer, just to understand roughly how the thing works
@kos No, just the "compiler" javac and a few other tools, but no IDE.
People have to use a standard editor or IDEs like Eclipse
@ByteCommander NewUSer is unteachable in this matter.
@Fabby he, nice to see you
@A.B. some users will always remain new :+)
13:24

He is like a red flag for me.
@A.B. What did he do now again?
@A.B. You're probably the same for him. I've seen you both leave rude and aggressive comments on each other's posts. I would suggest you simply ignore his posts. Downvote/Upvote as appropriate and leave it at that. You're both annoyed at each other and anything else just won't end well.
Yes, you're right. I try.
kos

@ByteCommander I see. Which is kinda recursive
kos

13:36
Just an unuseful / nonsense comment. I meant using Eclipse to write Java. This is also the rule for the vast majority of C IDEs

@NewUSer I have no idea, mine was just a constructive suggestion. I really don't want to jump in it. If someone said something offensive than he's wrong. But if the other replied to the offense, that's wrong as well, because it just spills gasoline on the fire. Wrapping this up: just be both more relaxed. Don't be offensive and ignore (flag) the other's offenses. You don't need to be friends, but you'll have to live toghether. Just try to relax and to understand the other's points.
How do I most easily process bash script arguments? I need to treat the first one ($1) specially and just add all others up to one.

Should this be considered an answer? It seems like a request for information, rather than an attempt to provide even a partial solution. If it contained instructions about how to interpret the results, it might be an answer--but it doesn't. Ordinarily I wouldn't hesitate to flag it (perhaps with a custom flag suggesting a mod make it a comment on the question, with its comment replies intact).
But 3 people seemed to think it was an answer (in that they upvoted it), so I'm looking for some guidance here first.
