00:11
hey, guess what still works good
unity even has shadows under undecorated windows, not too bad.
The playonlinux logo always reminds me of MSN >.<
note the right hand corner ;)
You mean the camera? Neat! Glad it still works!
well, we tried to future proof it with python3, gstreamer 1.0, and pygi
just some of the extra ui bits were getting complicated, and if it had to scale a lot, performance would suffer
@Mateo What app is that?
00:18
camcastic ;)
Also, is that an Inbox Webapp?
And your screen O.O It looks massive.
yeah, it is just a chrome windowed page, but yeah "webapp" ;P
1920x1080 !
Huh. Well, it's bigger than mine. 1440x900 (16:10 :P)
00:25
so, I'm going to try play a game with that running
@Mateo ah
was started off a opensource project that was pygtk, gstreamer .10, and python 2 that had mixed tabs and spaces, took a bit to port it over - hbdgaf did most of the fixing after I hit the code base with a hammer a bit
00:42
Hi.
@TheX o/
How's life?
How's it going?
Life is busy.
In a good or bad way?
00:43
Depends on the moment honestly.
Mostly good.
Well, that's good!
see what I did there? Eh? Eh?
...I need a life
Yup.
I think I am going to install Lakka tonight.
I ordered a fancy new gaming mouse on Saturday
@TheX Cool!
@RPiAwesomeness what kind?
@TheX Logitech G402. Plus a Qck mousepad
I'm so excited :D
Though it's supposed to get here next monday :P
00:57
Oh...I upgraded from a DeathAdder, to a Razer Naga Hex.
Eewwww Razer :D
Lol, I like Razer.
I'm sure it's fine, I've just heard that they're overpriced for what you're getting.
What do you do if Windows refuses to format your micro sd card?
@TheX Use Ubuntu to do it! :D
01:00
Oh..I paid 10 dollars for it...
Oh, well in that case, go for it ;)
Plus, that's an MMO mouse, correct?
Yeah it is...
I'd use mine more for FPS, so you don't want to accidentally be hitting random buttons :P
You can disable them lol
I've had plenty of recommendations for the G402, and it was only $35, so I figured I would get it.
01:01
I don't play MMO's...
But what I really like it for is my pinky doesn't hang off into oblivion...
There is a resting space for it...
Ah, the joys of editing video with lots of little things:
But it was really hard to get use to at first
This'll be a real change for me, never had a true gaming mouse before and I've always used Wireless mice.
Good thing I'm getting (rather, building) a new desk this summer - lots more space.
Holy macro I have a lot of files on my PC
It looks like a decent mouse, but just remember, no matter how good your mouse is, if you suck, you suck... (like me)
@TheX Yup. I definitely think I will get better with this mouse though. I can't tell you how many times I've been screwed over by a lack of precision when I could have easily had the kill >.<
Plus, my current mouse is moseying its way toward mouse heaven.
Scroll wheel has started sticking, button clicks aren't staying registered.
It still works, but it's really bad for gaming.
01:30
@RPiAwesomeness yeah my deathadder was doing some really strange things and Ubuntu would freeze after 30secs to 5 mins of usage...
so was recording on my ssd, and it started to run out of room
so, this one will be a 2 part, I think
as long as I don't die terribly - playing binding of Issac
@Mateo, time to upgrade to that 1TB SSD that you have always wanted but will never be able to afford!
01:51
@Mateo Cool! That game is something I'll watch people play but don't see myself playing.
Gimme the link when it's uploaded :)
it's tough, but fun
this one is a decent round so far
the first 4 time I tried recording I died silly deaths in the first two levels ;P
@NathanOsman Feature request for NitroShare. Partial transfers.
Eg, you can pause and resume (like Firefox's .part system)
Ah. That's an interesting idea.
oh, like if you need to take your laptop somewhere real quick, or it disconnects
@Mateo Exactly.
01:55
They can be restarted though.
For whatever reason, my laptop simply can't transfer big files (IO bottleneck maybe?) beyond like 12-13 MB.
So, that feature would be very useful for me.
Or perhaps it's my router.
Or, the wifi chip in my laptop. Because when I fail the transfer, it disconnects me from the network o.O
Never heard of the game
it's a strange game
@RPiAwesomeness it is very easy to put a new wifi chip in a laptop, the hard part is finding the drivers.
whops, totally ruined the recording :/
I'll need to record to the other drive next time...
anyway, part 2 might be more intresting
02:08
@Mateo It is indeed
@TheX I am putting zero more dollars into this ancient thing.
I'd give you one if you lived closer...
@TheX WiFi chip or laptop? :D
To get it into near perfect order again would require about as much money as an newer laptop...
Well...wifi chip...but I do have a really old Laptop you could have lol
I can't get any roms to work :-(
02:12
:(
Well...I could upgrade the CPU to a Core 2 Duo T7600 (2.33 GHz) for ~$40.
Actually I have a laptop in my car from work that you could "borrow"
Now I'm just speccing out how much it would cost me to upgrade CPU and RAM and replace the DVD drive and storage...
my boss would never know...lol
It has been in my car for 3 weeks...
02:16
I could get a maximum of 4GB of RAM ... DDR2
this is the laptop i have in my car
except I think it has 4gbs of ram
I could upgrade the RAM for $23. $41 + 23 == $64 thus far
plus a new wifi chip
Now, how much the CD/DVD drive + storage will add on.
so another 25
02:19
@TheX Oh yeah.
If I did this, I'd stick with what I have...
or you can get a usb dongle for 20...
or get a long ass ethernet cable...
I'm possibly getting a Macbook from mid 2008. If that happens, I'm putting this laptop away.
What kind of laptop is it?
Ouch. Storage is SATA. Not SATA II, not SATA III - straight up SATA
@TheX Toshiba Satellite A105 S4384
Wow, that is ancient...
02:22
Yap.
About half as old as I am >.<
The good news is...Toshiba's last forever...
Trying to find the actual original release date...
@TheX The do, it's crazy.
My wife had a cheap bargain laptop that was on sale at walmart for 250$
had it for 7 years... just replaced it a few months back...
Included 6-cell battery: 2 hours, 2 minutes ... yup. Sounds about right >.<
@TheX Impressive!
I would've upgraded ages ago...but I lack funds
It was over heating so I took it apart and when I did, the screw retainer broke on the MOBO that held the heat sync on the CPU...
02:24
Whoop
would have required a new MOBO...
So i was just like...lets just get a new computer...
Why do you do Mobo in all caps?
@RPiAwesomeness I don't know...always have lol...
Yeah...more trouble than it's worth
@TheX :D
I guess because MOBO is short for MotherBoard...
and you do all caps when you use shorthand for all the other computer parts...
like HDD, and SDD and RAM, and BIOS...
02:27
Well, you do those full caps because they're acronyms. Mobo is just short for something - not an actual acronym.
@RPiAwesomeness it doesn't have to make sense, it is just the way my brain works! :=P
or doesn't work lol
;)
Looks like the hard drive would be anywhere from $38 on.
I was considering sorta halfway considering this ... but it's reached $100 and that just nukes the idea entirely for me
Oh I could have given you a free 60gb SSD...
Bummer
SSD would be useless for me :D
Well fine then..I didn't really want to give it to you anyways :-P
02:39
An HDD would legitimately be better because of longevity and the fact that the laptop's only SATA 1 (1.5 GBps) :D
Wait wait wait.
A mechanical hard drive... an SSD... longevity?
@NathanOsman ...Yeah...HDDs last longer
Than an SSD?
[citation needed]
@RPiAwesomeness I would tend to whole heartily disagree with you...
All it takes is one drop to a HDD and it is toast...
@NathanOsman @TheX Well, they used to be anyways. It's improved quite a bit recently.
02:41
Okay So I did some quick math...
@TheX I was talking about just read/write longevity. Of course SSDs have a longer life expectancy if they're being handled.
I'm pretty sure SSDs win there too.
@NathanOsman Really? I had always thought that HDDs had the life span edge on SSDs. If I'm wrong, I'll gladly be corrected.
You would have to write 1TB of data for 50 years every day before you would experience any problems with a modern SSD...
I'm digging up some references...
02:44
BTW my math could be flawed...
(I am not as smart as I use to be)
and an SSD that is limited to SATAI is going to smoke a HDD that is SATAIII
Really? o.O
Oh wait, duh.
There is no seek time, there is no fragmentation, there is no waiting for the HD to spin up...
Well, in that case ... please send it :D
I would be more than happy to receive a new storage device
Mine is rapidly losing itself
I don't think my wife will let me pay for the shipping...
02:47
Can't find that article...
Where do you live? It's okay if you want to keep that private.
Although it would probably be really cheap.
Illinois...
You could probably find out easily enough (with my IP)
@TheX Oh, probably
Oh yeah, it'd be fairly cheap. I'm in Michigan.
@Mateo is practically my neighbor...
In fact I drove by his house once (not really) but I was in the same town that he lives in.
02:50
I just didn't know it at the time.
I'd totally give you my address ... but I somehow think my parent's wouldn't approve :P
Stupid parents, they get in the way of everything.
lol, quite often they are indeed.
... you do realize you just insulted yourself ... right?
Although I would be rather pissed if one of my kids gave my address out to some stranger on the interwebs
Technically they are not my kids...yet...
@TheX I think you'd be really pissed if they did it on a CP forum ... FBI at the door and everthing.
@TheX Oh? You're not married?
02:52
No I am married.
The kids that live with us, are not from our bloodline...
Oh, adopted?
No not yet...
Maybe never...
Well, in the process of adoption. Still, that's really cool. I've got a bunch of friends who are adopted.
Not really in the process...lets just say...their family for whatever reason is incapable of having them right now...
Oooooh
Soo...Foster Care?
02:55
Yes...
Ah
I know a family who had foster kids and ended up adopting them. They had the worst time with CPS...
Oh?
Yeah. It was just awful. CPS dragged their feet even though it was obvious the biological mother wasn't doing diddly-squat to try and get her kids back and just all sorts of stuff.
The primary goal is to get the kids back to their family....and they will give the bio parents a million and one chances if they feel like there is a 1% chance of it happening...
@TheX That's just it, the mother obviously could care less about her kids >.>
But hey. It's over and done with. I shouldn't be speaking too much, seeing as it wasn't my family involved.
02:59
And part of the problem is, it is up to a single judge, that holds all the power, but only sees the case on paper...
I must say, VIM (at least the default on Ubuntu) is very nice. I definitely prefer it to nano now that I've figure it out a bit.
Never the best case scenario for the kids, but they do the best they can I suppose...
I wouldn't want to be the judge that has to decide whether or not to tear a family apart based on what I read on some paper...
ikr. That job would not be nice.
03:06
So as flawed and messed up as the system is, and as much as we know in our heart of hearts, we just have to try to keep things in perspective from all angles...
For professional bikers I imagine...
No, those are actually mid-spec brakes.
But hey on the flip side, you know your ass is going to stop
03:11
I gotta get my hands on this:
Heh. Yeah. I've got somewhere upward of $200 worth of stuff (t-shirt and other gear) from all over that I want to get ...
200 dollars? I would be a billion dollars in debt if I didn't have a financial adviser (the wife)
I'd have the fastest computer in the country though...
@TheX Did I tell you about my plans for my next desktop?
03:17
@NathanOsman nope
@NathanOsman we just put a new server in at work...
May 4 at 2:56, by Nathan Osman
You think that's crazy talk... I'm tempted to get a massive server for my next computer (Xeon E7, 64 GB RAM, RAID 1, etc) and install Xen. Then I can run Windows, Ubuntu, Fedora, Mint, etc. at the same time :)
^--- sorry, desktop computer
"here is your first project when you get back, we need a new server to replicate that DHCP and File server so if the main one ever goes down it will be redundant"
May 4 at 3:04, by Nathan Osman
System76 - for $7383, I can get a server with two E5-2650 CPUs (10 cores each @ 2.30 GHz) each with 32 GB of RAM, and two 120 GB SSDs in RAID 1.
Kinda pricey. But hey - 10 cores.
Yeah that would be cool
And noisy.
03:19
Yeah they are loud...
I would have to get something to mitigate the sound.
@NathanOsman our 3 year plan is this:
We have 5 building in the district, that are all basically LANS, that communicate via a VPN.
if needed...
what we want to do eventually is have one central server that handles all user authentication, DHCP,
Then the servers at the individual buildings will handle data, and will have nightly backups to the central server, which will be backed up off site somewhere...
@TheX 0_o
the problem we currently have is that as the kids move through the buildings k-2, 2-8, and 9-12, we have to recreate and move all their data manually every year at the appropriate buildings...
So if we can have one system handle authentication, then all we have to do is move data, which would be easy, we just move one class...
instead of individual users...
Phase one is to upgrade bandwidth...
@NathanOsman are there any OS's that support a 10 core CPU?
@TheX Uh... Linux.
And Xen lets you assign cores to VMs, so Windows would be assigned whatever it could use.
03:25
I would pay a 100 dollars for a 10 core Rpi....
Just buy 10 RPis and you get redundancy too.
that would be 350 dollars
and 40 cores...
lol that would be epic win.
So @Serg I ended up using Fantastique Sans Mono as my programming font.
So far I really like it.
03:40
@NathanOsman Pshaw. That ain't nothing. Intel has a Xeon with 18 Physical cores, 36 with Hyper-threading
Oh noes! Whatever will the internet do?
@RPiAwesomeness I know.
But that's even more expensive.
@NathanOsman :)
Oh yes. $4500-ish IIRC?
@Seth Huh. Interesting. It looks like a nice cross between Ubuntu Mono and handwriting. I may have to give this a try...
@RPiAwesomeness You should, it's pretty nice :)
03:44
@Seth I will :D
And with that I need to hit the sheets.
Night folks!
Bonne nuit!
The new Windows sounds are rather chill and quite nice
Less digital than 7 or 8
Ugh. I have this super annoying staticy sound on my audio and I can't get rid of it :P
In other news, the new Microsoft/Windows logo font is really nice
Man. I really want to work on my project, but I can't because I'm hung up on this bothersome issue of getting the contents of a GtkEntry widget :P
I think I know why I can't ... I don't think Gtk stores the values of the fields after the Window has been destroyed.
04:17
I thought Motorola made the Nexus 6???
@NathanOsman Do you have any idea how I would down-grade my gnome-font-viewer package? It's got that bug where it freezes everything and crashes any time I try to install a new font, but I only have this one version in the Utopic repos
No idea.
:P Bother
Oh well. Just a minor inconvenience. I rarely have to install fonts anyways.

Should this question be reopened? I agree that is not useful to everyone, but I came across a suggested edit which argued about the thing a little better. I rejected the edit because it tried to hijack the question in the latest part, but perhaps with a more appropriate edit it might be eligible for reopening

Wow just three more releases and they have to change the name scheme for Ubuntu Releases. xD
@AmithKK or start over at the beginning :)
@AmithKK why? the one behind that might have something like Aa* Aa* :)
Or go with 3 words: A* a* a* :D
Or maybe Mark ends his support for Ubuntu >:-D
13:06
@Rinzwind lol. Doubtful with Ubuntu reaching convergence with PC and Phones faster than Microsoft xD
If Canonical ever comes out with a device like the Edge was supposed to be, I am so getting one if at all possible. That just sounds awesome.
13:28
@muru yes, you're right. I realize now that you just posted the link only comment, which doesn't necessarily mean the post isn't an answer.
hiya, @Seth
I've had to correct a lot of NAA comments lately, but I see now that's now what you meant.
Hiya @ThomasW.!
@Seth Have I ever said how much I hate microsoft?
the networking stack in Microsoft is slowwwwww and interrupts Flash player operation to the point it won't work.
Linux Superiority Confirmed.
Yes you have said :p
13:32
I've said too...
Windows is just such a pain.
well, HOPEFULLY I can get special dispensation from work to get Ubuntu put on my work laptop instead of Windows... most of the stuff I do needs the command line anyways
and putty is hopelessly behind on that stuff
or at least an Ubuntu VM
sooooooo much easier to work with Debian SSH sessions with Linux than PuTTY
Definitely.
Have you considered cygwin?
That might be a bit better
13:54
@Seth But I lose my keyboard shortcuts that way
/me is rendering out my Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10074 video
@RPiAwesomeness install it on your Pi yet?
@TheX No, all the links I found seem to be dead...
Oh by the way, newegg has your mouse as one of today's shell shocker...
it will probably drop below 30 bucks :-P
>.< Oh well.
14:01
Yeah I hate it when that happens to me...
Maybe I can cancel the Amazon order? Doubtful.
Just when you thought you got a good deal...
You can cancel it if it didn't ship
Yeah, I'd have to see...
@TheX If you go here and click on Download (below Windows IoT Core) you'll see what I mean aout the links being messed up.
The ISO should be here. But nothing's showing up :P
14:04
Oh...
Anything come up for you?
Nope
I downloaded it the release day, but I am not at that computer
otherwise I would dumb it on dropbox for you.
Yeah I don't have it on my flash drive.
@RPiAwesomeness
Oh cool! :D
14:14
i need a cheap 120mm cooling fan with a blue LED...
I had one die on me this morning
"cheap" "die".
Makes sense :=D
@Rinzwind my last cheap one lasted 3 years
woah...stoner fan
it would have lasted 10 years if you paid a little bit more
@TheX Good gracious
@Rinzwind yeah but then I have no reason to upgrade other than "I want to" which never flies...
this way I can say "Honey, I need to buy a new fan because my old one broke"
14:20
MY money is MINE :=D
mine too...
we just are not use to having it yet...
@TheX Whoa
Not gonna buy it...
but it is a pretty cool idea..
there was a bunch of different designs
