Ok
user136984
@ByteCommander: Why is qTox making contact with known botnet servers?
user136984
I thought it was a P2P thing and wouldn't be connecting to any central servers. Well, not so many anyway, with such bad reputations.
@kos thanks for the effort, anyway!
How's Vi and Vim going @muru?
@Seth 2-3 questions per day. Not much work for mods.
16:05
@muru :(
Dunno how to drive traffic. :(
Yeah, that's kind of a harder subject to drive traffic for. I wish I had more time to hang around.
And most q's are beyond me. When I do finally manage to answer one, Carpetsmoker does a Gilles on me. :D
Sounds like it might be a question for Community Building @muru :p
user136984
@ByteCommander: It is communicating with them using UDP-UNKNOWN, which if it was just UDP, would not be too uncommon, but UDP-UNKNOWN traffic is likely to be malicious, especially if it is talking with a botnet server. So I am just wondering if there is a legitimate reason for it to be engaging in such activity.
user136984
16:07
Although, if it is really meant to be talking to all those servers, then it could just be by chance that some of them are infected and blacklisted for it.
@muru lol
Interesting site. I'll browse through it. :)
Grr....I don't want to have to include all those lines of filter_SOANDSO.add_pattern('*.EXTENSION') but my
with open('data/imglist', 'r') as imgList:
    for img in imgList:
        filter_img.add_pattern("*."+img)
isn't working :P
There. Formatting. Gosh.
kos
kos
@muru Np, anyway if you eventually find a way around this and you remember ping me do so, I'm interested as well
And I don't know why. No errors are being returned, the filter just isn't working :P
16:13
throw a space between the plus sign and image. I doubt that's the issue but it's bugging me ;)
@RPiAwesomeness This is where print is your friend. Throw some print statements around. Print imgList once you open it, then print img for every iteration.
Got all the data you expected?
I'm not familiar with the filter idea but try to print the filters too.
@Seth I believe so. I've tried that, and I get this:

we'll you're going to have to tell me if that's the expected output.
Dunno why it's not being accepted by the add_filter() function...
when using perl with substitute what is the proper way to write perl -pe 's:\r^{:foo:g' I can get it to work without \r but Im having trouble finding what I can use.
That should be what comes out AFAIK.
16:16
did you add that space?
No, that's the weird thing. I can't figure out why that's there. I've tried strip('\n') but that hasn't done anything.
@Darth_Vader We've got a few perl/regex experts around but I'm not sure they're active right now. Have you considered asking a question on the main site? Chat is fine but you might actually get the answer faster on the main site :)
@RPiAwesomeness I meant in your code.. Add a space between the " and the + as well as after.
yes I was going to ask but before I ask I was curious if someone knew of a source to reference
@Seth Oh, yes.
Is that a yes I added it yes?
16:18
I think there's a \n or something hiding in there.
@Darth_Vader That's perfectly fine.
@RPiAwesomeness this is kind of hard to debug over chat ;p
ill ask the main site and see
@Seth Yes, I added it.
@Seth It is :P
seems like you're getting the output you expected? Besides the newlines anyway.
16:20
You sure about filter_img?
Make sure you print the pattern to, just to make sure it is what you expect.
Concatenating strings can be weird sometimes.
Yup, the pattern is coming out correctly. Perhaps there really is a newline hidden in there that's screwing things up...
Try print(repr(pattern).
AHA!
There IS a \n in there!
How'd you find it?
hey guys, can i haz a question about awk ?
16:27
@Serg that print(repr(pattern)) command
but then why doesn't pattern.strip('\n') work?
@RPiAwesomeness wrong person ^_^
\o/ wooo!
Figured it out.
I needed to strip('\n') the variable, not the concatenated string.
kos
kos
@Serg If it's about the pattern I might help, but for the rest I don't know awk
nah, I think I just found it. I need to awk something from multiple files, replace, and store it back in. It's a for loop
7
Q: How to replace a string on the 5th line of multiple text files?

Avinash RajI want to replace the 5th line of multiple text files (file1.txt,file2.txt,file3.txt,file4.txt) with the string " Good Morning " using a single terminal command. All the text files are located on my ~/Desktop. Note: My desktop consists of 6 .txt files.I want to apply the change to above mention...

something for f in /path/to/files/*; do
now how about cat stuff into multiple files?
... or not?
Yup! We're good!
Yay!
16:33
got it: cat testerfile | tee tester{1,2,3,4}
kos
kos
@Serg Anyway there are awk solutions in both answers
@Serg Also it looks like from coreutils 4.10 you can use use awk in-place
Where does someone go If he/she want to start learning Python.
Wana create an app!
@blade19899 ask Jacob Vjim =D
that guys does everything in python
@blade19899 Code.org is pretty good if you want online. Otherwise, try the Head First Python book. That book is one of the best I've used that gets you going on Python basics quick.
@RPiAwesomeness Downloaded the Head First Python book! I'm going to play with it for a bit! Thanks!
@Serg Thats the creator of Python right?
16:40
@blade19899 np :) I assume you bought it from their site as an e-book?
'cause last I checked, it wasn't free.
@RPiAwesomeness You can download it from here for free or an option to buy it: it-ebooks.info/book/373
@RPiAwesomeness ?
Could you check that link for me and the pdf it provided!
@blade19899 ... not so sure if that site is entirely legit...
@RPiAwesomeness The pdf seems legit!
Can you send me a screenshot or two?
I mean, the PDF might be the real book, but I don't know if that site is legal or not.
@RPiAwesomeness You can just download the pdf?
16:45
I've got slow internet :P
kos
kos
Also, a free good ebook on bash?
30 MB is gonna take at least 10 minutes to download
@blade19899 Nope, that's a guy is one of the users here
@blade19899 like I said, he does all the scripting in python. He's really awesum
@blade19899 Yeah...I'll look at the PDF once it finishes, but I personally wouldn't use that site. I'm usually wary of sites that end in .info and especially since they seem to be offering a free copy of a book that usually costs ~$30.
@blade19899 Yeah...that looks like the full book. Can you read all of the pages?
@RPiAwesomeness 445 pages long
@blade19899 Yeah. Most likely that site isn't legit. However, it's up to you what you're gonna do.
@blade19899 and?? a great book is sometimes 1200+ pages long.. how much you trying to get out of it?
16:50
I'm just a guy trying to learn python and I want to learn it the right, standardized proven to work way.
well by your comment I dont see that, it looked like you were looking for the cliff note version of python.
> This PDF file contains 2 JavaScript blocks. Malicious PDF documents often contain JavaScript to exploit JavaScript vulnerabilities and/or to execute heap sprays. Please note you can also find JavaScript in PDFs without malicious intent.
@blade19899 Well, that book is a very good way to start. However, I fear that the site you got it from isn't legal. Again, it's your call.
> The combination of automatic actions and JavaScript makes this PDF document suspicious.
@RPiAwesomeness Yeah not using this any longer... deleted
@blade19899 Do you have a local library?
16:53
@Darth_Vader I don't know jack about python, knowing the cliff note, and then the rest, is how I want to learn it. Just in case I find it way to complicated???
@RPiAwesomeness Local? as in around my area? No. I life around farms...
@blade19899 Ah
Is another good one. Might be worth buying.
@RPiAwesomeness I will look in to it! Thanks!
@blade19899 :)
@RPiAwesomeness very good books
@RPiAwesomeness yay
@Seth You sir, are awesome.
and if you like to dive right in: learnxinyminutes.com/docs/python
@blade19899 :)
@Seth Oh yeah. I forgot about all of those.
I'm pretty well versed with some of them, not having much money for expensive programming books ;P
17:10
@A.B. That exists! ignore user script
Although I do live near an amazing library, CS books aren't their speciality.
@Seth Boo. They don't have a version of C++ in English :(
Oh wait...
facepalm
those are the translations :P
@Seth I didn't realize the titles on the left were selectable and that the buttons on the right were just translations :P
also @RPiAwesomeness: c.learncodethehardway.org
17:11
@Seth But that's C. I want to learn C++
@A.B. (and an upvote for you removing the "parasite" comment.)
Also. It is bloody beautiful outside today. I might just have to go work outside...
sorry for teh pings
@Seth lol, It's fine. I didn't even have my earbuds in :)
(I've already upvoted, so will not check whether you did or not, but you're better then him and someone else will find this useful as well and upvote too!)
17:13
@Seth Whoa. I'm liking this LearnXinYMinutes site...
@Seth askubuntu.com/questions/620191/… I asked on the main site
@NathanOsman o/
@NathanOsman Did you hear? I got Gtk working! :D
\o/ indeed!
17:21
hump day wave: o/ \o o/ o/ \o/
@Darth_Vader nonononono. You're doing it all wrong.
\\o \o\ \o/ /o/ o//
Is the proper stickman dancing wave.
proper stickman is holding a beer but they havent implemented that one yet
Oh, yes. Of course.
I think they chose not to implement that one because he's still underage.
GitHub has been updated. Now, to implement multiple attachments (won't be too complicated ... in theory)
Then, it's on to a basic GUI.
17:41
[ SmokeDetector ] Offensive answer detected: Command not found -> did you mean -> Yes! by devnall on askubuntu.com
O... kay.
Why anyone would name their project with that word is beyond me.
Not terribly professional.
Any mods care to comment on what to do with that one? :P
@Fabby removed :)
@NathanOsman ... ikr. Goodness.
@NathanOsman well, we have had other ones like that before brain**** the programing language, and get****done the script, those are the only swear word posts I haven't flagged and should be the only ones that stay
so, that sounds similar...
It's still a fairly offensive name. Brain**** isn't a terribly common language and I'd never even heard of that other one, I fail to see why people even include swear words in the names of these things anyways - it's unprofessional like @NathanOsman said :P
17:54
yeah... It's had quite a bit of history on stackoverflow :/
Here, yes.
Otherwise...it's rather useless :P
The language itself is nearly useless.
The code appears heavily obfuscated and has very limited capabilities.
Perl can appear obfuscated as well, but has some practical value.
@NathanOsman Exactly. That's why it's called Brain ****
Cool! Formatting worked out correctly for once :D
18:08
question: I have this script here
#!/bin/bash
set -x
for file in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/* ; do
grep 'dns=208.67.220.220;' "$file" || ( awk '{print;if ($1=="[ipv4]"){getline; print "method=auto\ndns=208.67.220.
220;\nignore-auto-dns=true"}}' "$file" > .tempfile && mv .tempfile "$file" );
done
Which is supposed to be adding dns and ignore-auto-dns lines to system-connections
but every time I run it, the connection breaks, and nmcli con list doesn't see any, even though files seems correct
script seems fine, but connections still break
Oh good gravy. BASH...
well, technically i am using mksh, but just bash here, for 90% of the other users
I just can't put my finger on what I am doing wrong
if I edit a file in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/ with nano, it's fine; but with this script - everything breaks
a unusual answer :): askubuntu.com/a/620221/367165

@A.B. Ah :) Yeah, he's awesome :)
@ByteCommander 'cause consoles :D
18:24
It's a long essay, but worth reading. And funny :)
@ByteCommander I think I've actually seen this before, yeah it's good
@RPiAwesomeness Didn't he just come out with a remix album?
Back to matrices... Have to hold a presentation tomorrow. :P
@NathanOsman Yeah, do you follow his music?
'Yes, give me the office of the President of the United States.... NO, I WILL NOT HOLD. This is an emergency.... Hello, Mister President, I'm afraid I have some bad news. I've just been informed that The Internet is not working.'
Yeah, I have Google Play all access, so in theory I have all of his music :)
18:26
Best quote from that article :D
@NathanOsman Ah :)
I'm really hoping he's coming near me on his thissinotatest tour. He's gonna have Britt Nicole and Colton Dixon as guest stars :D
He's coming here in August, I think.
O.O
good gosh
@NathanOsman Lucky :D
"Using an OS used to be hard work. When things went wrong you had to dive in and get dirty to fix things. You learned about file systems and registry settings and drivers for your hardware. Not any more."
Exactly why systems like Linux are so great :D
"When they hit eleven, give them a plaintext file with ten-thousand WPA2 keys and tell them that the real one is in there somewhere. See how quickly they discover Python or Bash then."
Sneaky...
WPA2 can be cracked?
@NathanOsman No, they have to go through that file and try to find the correct key so they can connect to the WiFi :)
@NathanOsman Brute force only, I thought...

@ByteCommander: Did you see my earlier pings? :)
@ParanoidPanda what pings?
I don't think so...

user136984
@ByteCommander: I send you a few messages here.
user136984

back to school work...
@ParanoidPanda Because it's super-secure so botnet herders are using it too???
(If I was a botnet herder, that's what I would use)
user136984
18:46
@Fabby But why would my machine be talking to the botnet servers?
@ParanoidPanda :D
Now I know what you're so paranoid!
user136984
I thought it would only have a P2P connection from my machine to my contacts.
YOU'RE A BOTNET HERDER!
:D:D:D
user136984
:D
user136984
That would be nice, perhaps...
user136984
18:47
But sadly no... So what is this traffic?
I dunno, didn RTWFM yet...
user136984
Is someone controlling a botnet from my machine?
user136984
:D
user136984
That would be funny!
user136984
Where is the manual?
18:48
WITFM? TITFM!
@Fabby Where is your question of how to view installed packages from a given period?
The perl script
user136984
@Fabby Sorry, no idea what those stand for... :P :D
@A.B. Huh?
Either I'm blind or stupid or both.
user136984
But at least I got the manual now... :D
18:49
@ParanoidPanda Where is TFM? There is TFM...
user136984
Oh... Ok
user136984
:D
@ParanoidPanda I**'ve** got
Then somebody else was.
@A.B. It isn't my question...

Just beginning of Alzheimer's...

18:50
sure =) at my age that's ok
I know someone who got it at 55...
@A.B. You're 0! (according to your profile)
0!?
You didn't fill in your birth date... ;-)
You're 0 like most people in this room!

Hmm, I can not vote anymore.
@A.B. Vote for what?

Nice job: OT but nice askubuntu.com/q/620240/367165
@Serg Cursory glance: why did you keep the original answer?
the one you've edited in is radically different
Because the original also works. i use it on two of my laptops and it's IMHO best way.
And I just like keeping history of things . . .
well the edit logs keep a history btw :P
@Serg KISS!
Keep It Simple & Stupid...
Keep the simplest of your answers... (IMHO, the first one)
This is a purely personal and subjective opinion, feel free to disregard completely!
;-)
The two methods are different ,too, by the way
19:28
I'm dumb, but not that dumb! ;-)
(There is more then one way to kill a cat)
@RPiAwesomeness: Don't you have a cat? ;-)
@Fabby You're anything but dumb, my friend; I wish I worked on so many systems like you
Soooo, suggestions - how should I edit my answer ?
Went for a smoke...
Lemme have a look...
Look what happened! I just had a look! ;-)
They're both good... Make it two answers!
Thanks @Fabby ^_o . Wait. Two answers ?you mean to separate them in two separate posts ?
(You can do that... Look here )
Yippie! Another gold badge!! (Why am I so happy about a stupid virtual badge???)
and I though that was frowned upon as polluting the answer section area
19:44
:D Hey, I'm not a mod, but both answers are actually good...
(and one is completely automated)
Edited the answer to separate into two methods
@Fabby wow, that was cool ! Helps the users
@Serg What? I was posting to the wrong chat room
@Fabby no problem, but still handy ^_0
You didn't know about LMGTFY?
nope
