What is the best email client ever? besides outlook?
thunderbird and enigmail are both good. i prefer thunderbird.
eudora was good back in the day, but thunderbird trumps.
I use to love Eudora...
What about geary?
No dice for me. Never used it.
Oh I used a long time ago once...
I use thunderbird for enigmail. Sometimes you have a killer app/feature for a piece of software. If geary came up first in google for pgp gpg email ... and it worked as well - i might use itt.

Q: Laptop unusable after emptying recycling bin

user38493For a long time I've been wanting to get into Linux so I asked my friend if I could borrow his laptop (he's running Ubuntu). I was playing with it for a while and getting used to it, I saw his recycling bin (/bin/) had 7MB of stuff in it so I thought I might empty it and now I can't open any pro...

01:06
@chaskes I thought mail was good for going light :P
You meant mutt... but I'm not arguing. Still, I like something feature competitive to Thunderbird with Enigmail.
well actually I was thinking of mailx but I've never used it so perhaps it doesn't do quite what I think it does.
Oh, I certainly don't use mutt any more... but it's the "normal" answer for rock solid cli email clients.

Q: Ubuntu: Is it viable to run Live Linux on a Laptop with a failing hard drive?

BakeMeMuffins92I have determined using Hiren's Boot CD that my hard drive is in fact failing. It started by failing to boot into Windows or Linux partitions on my computer, and then I downloaded Hiren's, burned to a live USB and ran a few tests, indicating my hard drive was failing. So my question isn't about ...

01:24
Reading a Ubuntu Forums post. "Please delete your Xorg.conf and run this command to generate a new one." "That didn't work but I ran this weird script and it fixed everything. What does it do?" "It generates a new Xorg.conf and replaces the old one". Made me giggle a bit.
01:40
I use mutt for reading system mail. Makes me feel like I got into Unix back when I should have.

@hbdgaf So, you're saying move everything down, but keep the "It's what everyone's talking about" thing?
what is the proper way to write a conditional that will target a filename that has whitespace?
03:03
Can you be a little more specific @Matt?
yay first thunderstorm of 2015 hope the power doesn't go out!
My Raspberry Pi 2 arrives tomorrow. Since my Internet is so slow and since we were at McDonald's for super, I made use of their Wi-Fi to download the Ubuntu disk image and snappy core.
@RPiAwesomeness can sympathize with me :)
Im trying to do two things.. set a variable that will run through a filename and see if it has whitespace for a conditional.. and Im trying to set a variable based off a partial filename.. looking at my notes and I dont see it
@NathanOsman you can borrow my internet anytime.
03:19
@Matt so detect if a filename contains whitespace?
ya I have about 5k worth of files
Im also looking to set a variable based on if a filename has foobar then Im going to write a conditional for that
Does it have to be shell?
I'm thinking this would be easier in python.
would prefer
everything else Im doing with it is through bash
Have you taken a look here @Matt?

Q: how to check if a string has spaces in bash shell

derrdjisay a string might be like "a b '' c '' d", how can I check that there is single/double quote and space contained in the string?

@RPiAwesomeness arond?
03:29
@Seth ah.. great, I will read on that, Ive been in unix/linux
03:43
This seems to work too @Matt: find -name "* *".
find is pretty powerful and you should be able to tailor it further as needed.
blasted.. I need to stay frequent in my scripting
I'm off to bed now!

Better yet use find -type f -name "* *".

Q: Chrome thinks that I am holding down CTRL when I am not

ToroidalI have not had this problem in a long time with Google Chrome on Ubuntu. But as it keeps on coming back now, I thought that I should ask a question here. So the problem is that suddenly for no apparent reason Chrome will start to behave as if every click and key that I press is done at the same ...

user136984
:)
@Toroidal What about smacking the Ctrl-key furiously with a rainbow trout?
user136984
@ByteCommander Well, I tried pressing Ctrl many times, but still the problem stayed. And don't think that I have any fish in the house... :D :P
13:38
Well, then it does not work... Often the keyboard keys "hang" and stay pressed after you release it...
Anyway, could somebody please help me with my broken update-notifier-common package? It's essential!
user136984
@ByteCommander Why don't you just try reinstalling it?
user136984
Or does it not work like that...? :)
@Toroidal Problem is that this u-n-c package is ESSENTIAL.
Removing it will also remove all DEs and a lot of other vital stuff!
And a --reinstall doesn't work:

user136984
@ByteCommander Could you not manually configure it if you find out how it should be configured?
@Toroidal how? Never did that before...
user136984
13:48
@ByteCommander Well, when it was installed files were just copied and modified (and possibly some deleted, but that's not the point), so if something went wrong and not all files where correctly copied or modified, then just have a look at a .deb file copy of the package and see how everything could have gone. Or just contact someone who manages the package.
@Toroidal I never touched a .deb except with dpkg -i...

@terdon Sorry for disturbing you, but you were able to help me many times, maybe this time too?
Final version.
Anyone want to voice any qualms with it before I upload?
@RPiAwesomeness The angles of the text lines are too similar. I would either make them equal or more different.
@ByteCommander Hmm?
Where?
The 2nd and 3rd line are both horizontally, while the 1st line is slightly tilted.
@ByteCommander It's supposed to be that way. Look up 1960s advertising, I'm trying to go for that sort of look
14:23
This makes the 2nd line look tilted to the other side...
Maybe tilting the 2nd line equally to the 1st would look better.
Un-tilting really doesn't look to me:
... I don't really like that either.
I would prefer the last one to be honest.
It's not bad, but getting the white space on the left right is going to be a nightmare :P
Don't tell me about nightmares! Wanna solve my package problems? THAT is a nightmare.

2) reconfigure the package update-notifier-common
Or what do you think?

So it will not remove my DEs?
Well, 3.8MB do not cover a whole DE - you might be right...
So I hit "y" then on your responsibility...

It is a meta package, installing it installs a group of packages but does not uninstall them
So, after you fix it just reinstall ubuntu-desktop
Fail!
I removed it, then did the whole set of clean, autoclean and autoremove, then reinstalled python-debian, then installed update-notifier-common --> Same debian.deb882 error!

I tried purging the unc, reinstalling python-debian, installing unc, but no success.
Do you have an idea?

@ByteCommander: try reinstalling the python-debian and python3-debian packages.
According to this page, those packages provide the deb822.py file.
Oh wait. I see you tried that already.
@RPiAwesomeness Anything with Yo'Yo Ma is bound to be good!

@NathanOsman I only reinstalled the python-debian, not python3-debian!
Well, I suppose you could try that.
16:43
@Seth favour? Aren't you American...? ;)
@NathanOsman exists.
What about purging and reinstalling those
@ByteCommander Odd.
@RPiAwesomeness Firefox defaults to UK spell check
@blade19899 McDonald's is where the Wi-Fi connects :P
I guess that's home?

@Mateo Purging a python package? Isn't that dangerous?
Is it?
I don't know? I heard that python is vital for Ubuntu...
Sure, but you will reinstall it right?
@Mateo It does, it's annoying :P

@ByteCommander Do those files exist (the Python ones)?
13 mins ago, by Nathan Osman
@ByteCommander: can you verify that /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/debian/deb822.py exists?
@ByteCommander just a handful, the others it just said it didn't need
maybe you can also pass the autoremove flag with a -simulation switch and see how much space it clears. That might give an idea?
16:56
root@AlkaliMetal:~# ls /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/debian/

arfile.py deb822.py debian_support.py deprecation.py
arfile.pyc deb822.pyc debian_support.pyc deprecation.pyc
Okay, so it's definitely there.
For some reason, Python can't find it...
So what shall I do now? I guess I won't purge it now... or yes?
Probably not a good idea.
Try opening a terminal and running python. Then in the Python interpreter, try this:
import debian.deb822
