wow, lol. somtimes linkedinspam is funny
just imagine me being a principal...

2 hours later…
03:04
Guess who is backing up and reinstalling :(
Friends, don't let friends try xorg-edgers.
7
@Seth lol, how many times have I told you that ;)
@Mateo hey, even I've told people that..
but I got desperate for my brightness to work :(
Oct 2 '14 at 20:37, by Mateo
what ever you do don't install xorg-edgers ppa, even if it is a popular answer ;)
yup. I broke my own advice, and yours and I'm paying for it.
03:09
hmm, like the brightness control?
I usually backup and do a clean install once or twice a year anyway.
@Mateo yep.
@Mateo It was stuck at full and my eyes really started hurting lately :/
I understand. Sometimes you feel like like prying the bezel open and disconnecting the backlight :P
sorry, wrong ping.
@NathanOsman Exactly! Except then you couldn't see anything :P
Stick a few resistors in there then :P
03:12
Hah! I hadn't thought of that :P
Probably voids your warranty, though :)
what type of laptop?
I don't have one left anyway.

Q: Ubuntu 14.04 Brightness issue with nvidia Quadro

danielvdendeI recently upgraded from Ubuntu 13.10 to 14.04. Everything is fine, except the brightness of my laptop screen. When I change the brightness the screen simply does not respond. I figured this was a graphics driver issue, but having updated and reinstalled all nvidia drivers the problem persists. I...

Elitebook 8560w.
It was given to me so I can't complain too badly, but man do I hate the thing sometimes.
Did I mention it weighs 9 pounds?
did you do the whole acpi backlight=vendor grub thing?
9 pounds???
(Couldn't resist.)
@Mateo I believe I did, but I cannot remember at this point
@NathanOsman Been a while since I weighed it, but yes, it was either 8 or 9 pounds.
@NathanOsman lol
tell the acpi it is on windows?
hrm...
@Seth hi-five! Ditto here.
03:20
@muru Wow, for some reason I didn't think anyone as crazy as me existed, but I guess that makes two then ;)
@Mateo worth a try!
I meant on the weight only (:P) Mine's a System 76 Bonobo
Right, I got that. Didn't know the Bonobo weighed so much O_o
So. Vi.SE. I feel like shedding a tear. :')
We made it!
Or I should say you made it.. I was so busy the last few weeks I hardly participated :(
We still need to get it out of beta.
How about I nominate you as a mod?
03:27
me?!?
I have a total of two posts!
But you're a nice mod!
Well I'm flattered, but the mods on vi.se need to be highly active community members who have taken the time to help form the site. Not someone like myself :)
You'd make a better candidate, methinks :)
I'll be a mod. I'll take care of renaming tags (like to , for example).
Nope. <shudders at the thought>
03:31
@NathanOsman <double shudder>
Real programmers use nano, anyways :P
Please.. What was it M-x butterfly, or something?
@NathanOsman ಠ_ಠ
@muru :(
@Seth What can I say? xkcd overrules everything else. :P
Oh, that.. No, the thought of being able to close or delete a question instantly... Power of the dark side. :P
@muru oh I was replying to something else, but I think it applies to that pretty well too :P
03:36
@NathanOsman ikr.
@muru Are you inferring something? >:P
Vi...too complicated.
I would like to try emacs though

Friends, don't let friends try xorg-edgers.
Well, it is a short Hamming distance from Seth to...
@RPiAwesomeness @RPiAwesomeness Try it for a week and you'll find yourself trying to use vi keybindings everywhere. Trust me.
@Seth There should not be a comma after the first Friends
03:37
@RPiAwesomeness Shame on you @RPiAwesomeness. I never expect to hear such foul language here again.
@RPiAwesomeness I overuse commas :p
@Seth Ah.
@muru :D hey. I gotta try them all :)
@Seth You do. Holy heck.
Egad! It's @FlackBot!
Please, humans. Real programmers use cat and echo.
I think Seth meant: I overuse, commas.
03:38
@FlackBot Pleasy?
@RPiAwesomeness That's what happens when a cat echoes.
@FlackBot Aha! We've uncovered who you really are!
Or have we.
I am really not.
Eh. Bug feature in the programming
Just flashing the OS to my micro SD card now
Gonna be doing a separate video looking at performance.
@muru hahah, sadly I'm not that good.
03:41
Gosh. I need to get a Class 10 micro SD card. Class 4 is just horrid after you get used to using Class 10.
@FlackBot lol, I misread that as "I am really hot".
Yeah, I highly recommend class 10.
@flackbot What is the current time?
@Mateo 1 minute past 60 seconds ago.
3
He's known for dry humor sometimes.
03:42
lol
kthxbai
3
Wow... that was short.
humph, I just realized I need to extract my SSH (and hopefully gpg) keys from my VM.
sigh.
This is going to take a while.
or, I could just take the entire VM, couldn't I?
@NathanOsman I like nano, except for the the thing it does at the end of the terminal display with a $ sign
great, I forgot which VM it was..
03:46
well, I guess you could tell it to do line wrap...
@FlackBot xD Nice one :D
@NathanOsman I've got several - but they're full SD cards, not the MicroSD cards the Pi 2 & + models use :(
oh, they switched to micro sd?
yes
@Mateo Yeah. Since the A+ & B+ models.
I have a micro SD card. I can't remember the class though...
03:48
cool, I have quite a few of those for the cubieboards
Personally, I think that the full SD cards are better for younger kids because of size.
But then again, the plastic holder thing isn't that strong on the original Pi & besides, if you're too young to handle a micro sd card, you're too young to be on the computer programming or playing Minecraft.
And dang, micro-sd class 10 cards are cheap:
woah, nice
Heck. I could get an 8GB (plenty for basic Pi hacking) for $7 from Kingston. Comes with a full-SD adapter too!
I thought this was gonna be expensive...
whee, 6.5GB in 4 minutes.
@Seth Your internet?
03:56
I wish :(
USB 3.
Ah :(
USB 3 is awesome though :)
It is :D
do wd drives still come with extra stuff on them?
I just wish I had 3.1..
@Mateo Software?
03:57
I'm looking to get a usb 3 drive soon
I think ours did...but I could be wrong.
I wiped it and repartitioned it immediately.
@RPiAwesomeness yeah, they used to have a virtural cd thing that you had to remove on windows first...
@Mateo I don't think you need stuff anymore - but I could be wrong.
"wd smart ware" :/
I don't think that's required anymore, no.
You can still get it from their site, but you don't need it IIRC.
@Mateo If you're looking for a deal on backup hard drives, look on Woot!
We got 2TB WD for $80
03:59
I almost want to avoid buying them in general because of that stunt they did a while back.
I got Verbatim, works fine.
on the mac it auto installed extra drivers that crashed it... and changed the drive icon.
So, should I get the $2.59 more Samsung EVO 16GB MicroSD card - or just go with the cheaper Kingston Digital 16GB card?
@Mateo Ouch.
so that's cool you didn't have to worry about it on the one you got, their desktop drives are usually good
might give it a shot
04:03
Yeah. Like I said, I'm not entirely sure, but I don't remember having to download/install any drivers or software.
hmm, xubuntu or Ubuntu MATE?
Those are the ISOs I have for 14.10 AMD64.
@Seth Ubuntu MATE.
@RPiAwesomeness it was more like having to "uninstall" stuff they put on it that auto install on mac/windows, and the drives didn't work by default on linux
It just looks better than Xubuntu - at least in my experience.
@Mateo Ah. Well, like I said, this drive was partitioned as soon as we started using it.
Never mind. No contest here. I can get the Samsung Evo 16GB MicroSD card for $9.81 with straight up free shipping, no finagling with getting $35 extra stuffs.
Now...from California or Pennsylvania. Which will get here faster...?
Alright, I decided to give MATE a spin.
04:07
Probably Pennsylvania
Just for now anyway, I'll install Unity as soon as I'm done ;)
@RPiAwesomeness interesting site
@Seth Next LTS release I'm putting MATE on my laptop. Vanilla Ubuntu is just getting too heavy for the poor old thing :(
@Mateo It's awesome :D
I just wish they did more sales for components :P
Having a deal on a 2x8GB kit of DDR3 1600 MHz HyperX Fury RAM would be awesome :D
Gosh it's hard not to break out the phone charger & set up my Pi 2 tonight :P
see ya later folks, reinstalling!
so, maybe they buy popular stuff in lots. they don't have a lot of stuff.
04:13
@Mateo Yeah, but I'd rather get an MX Blue - from what I gather that's closer to what I'd like as touch-typer
@Mateo Sellouts & whatnot mainly AFAIK
yep, I'm using blue right now ;)
well that was short lived.
I guess my MATE image is corrupted.
04:16
I need a good, high-precision mouse that's not super expensive & all bling bling
@Seth Oh noes! :(
M305 is a great mouse, but mine's dying and it's just not precise enough for graphic design & pixel-perfect stuff.
And it needs to be wireless - can't stand having cords everywhere. Okay, not need, but it would be nice.
Any suggestions?
Anyways. G'night y'all.
For real this time...

Could you help me?
What is it?
Help installing a dirver
04:42
I don't have a 12.04 system handy
Let me try compiling on 14.04
I am using 14.10
Tried a newer version of backports? Maybe kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/projects/backports/stable/v3.16.2 ?
Ok
I think it is working
If it works, you could suggest an edit to use a version of backports appropriate for your kernel version
05:09
It works

@xiaodongjie what does it look like
@xiaodongjie Your website look like spam. You need to update the look of it, it look like it is from the early 2000's or the 1990's. Why is it cheaper for more web pages?
i uploaded a package that i created, in to sourceforge.net
oh, the pacificosoftware.co.uk?
0.02 < 0.05 < 0.1?
So more is cleaper
Can't install it, it is not compuitable with Plasma 5
06:01
it's running in ubuntu
could not install the deb?
Yea I am using ubuntu too
hmm, the deb package was created with pbuilder command in 12.04 lts.
installed?
Can you send me the source so I can compile it
06:03
it's not running?
oh, please download the deb file and click it in nautilus.
then
software center will fix dependency problems.
Nope doesn't work that way
Been using Ubuntu since 10.10
Tryed it on 9.10
yes, i'll upload one for 14.10/64
Thanks
06:10
i'm building it for 14.10/amd64 again now.
06:21
i write the build command as following.
sudo pbuilder --build ubuntu-dock_0.9.1-0ubuntu1.dsc --distribution utopic --architecture amd64
it's right?

Since the exam is brand new i couldn't find any resource and people.
@Achu Ask around in here, some of the people here are very knowledgeable
09:09
I know :) i will keep nagging them here.
test to see whether chat room is online as AU seems to be off-line...
@Karel: can you connect to AU? sstatic.net seems to be having problems for me...
@Fabby Pricing for the MX-ES Ultra can be found right now at $39 (16GB), $61 (32GB) and $114 (64GB) which is roughly $2/GB, and actually cheaper than we might have expected for the price of SLC memory. Nevertheless, these prices are higher than a typical flash drive and with good reason; it is professional grade when considering performance, reliability and endurance.
@Fabby Hello. Good answer! Link: thessdreview.com/featured/…
Yes! 2-3 times more expensive then a normal flash drive, bot 4-8 times faster and lasts 4-8 times longer...
reading...
09:25
@Fabby The last flash drive I bought was 8GB USB 2.0 for about $5 USB which works out to about 62 cents/gigabyte.
And does it still work???
>:) (unless you bought it a week ago)
@Fabby It's a mini flash drive for carrying in a wallet that I don't use it for anything rough, so I wouldn't be able to test it.
I use USB sticks seldomly, but if I'm in need of an external solution that needs to be robust and fast, SLC is the way to go (E.g. Some machine wich was not upgradeable beyond 4GB and whose owner needed to be able to display 3D scans of art, I just gave an 8GB SLC Lubuntu install that does exactly what he needs.)
:D
I've gone a 4GB on my key chain and one of these credit-card 1GB in my wallet too!
(never use them though unless to make screen-shots for AU)
