Aehm, one question: I must watch a film (LA Crash) for school and have the DVD here. But the "Videos" player only shows the menu, but after clicking on an option, it spins up the disc and hangs. Anybody knows what player I could use instead or what codecs/etc to install?

Q: Ubuntu 14.10 hangs for 10 minutes before halt at shutdown

I am running Ubuntu 14.10, and for the last few days when I have asked my computer shut down and it has got to the stage in the shut down where it has killed all my processes etc and is about to say the Will now Halt, it hangs for about 10 minutes before it halts and turns off. @Toroidal: You'll have to bite the bullet I'm afraid.... You're having too much trouble with this machine to make this your while... :(

therefore, IMNSHO, you should:

1/ remove all non-essential hardware from the machine

2/ Make a data back-up

3/ Install from scratch (14.4.01)

4/ Update everything

5/ make a system back-up

6/ add one one non-essential piece of HW,

7/ make that work

8/ go to step 5

9/ Make another system back-up, deleting all the old system backups and rename the last one as "Baseline..."

10/ Be a much happier user with less problems so you can learn from other people's mistakes here on AskUbuntu! ;-)

But as I am trying to learn fully how Linux works on a system level, a buggy machine is probably good! :D So that I have to go deep into the system to fix these problems. Anyway, every time that I try to install Ubuntu from a USB it tells me that the installation is corrupted... :(
