@Whaaaaaat: I like the handle and I've seen you leave some intelligent comments
So yes...
Simple. @Whaaaaaat is @DoorHandle on a different site. @DoorHandle is @Whaaaaaat's profile on Lifehacks, and Doorknob's worst enemy. @Whaaaaaat is sorta (?) respected by Doorknob, but not when he is @DoorHandle.
2
make sense?
:D
Totally!
evil gpl is evil
I should visit lifehacks some time
wtfpl.net <-- best license ever (minor cursing)
21:01
@Whaaaaaat That's definitely an extreme case of schizophrenia! ;D
Because I've left a lifehack solution for someone hitting his CD-Rom with his knee
all the time, and he had a laugh,
but someone else took offense
at a hardware solution. >:)
@ByteCommander nah. it's my worse-tempered alter ego that causes Doorknob to reach for the kick button.
simply because i'm his archnemesis.
@Fabby Me too, remember? That's why I this time was faster than you and already extended my SE account to lifehacks some days ago!
lol pls.
i'm user 49 on lifehacks
private beta 4dayz
I'm lurking in the shadows at U&L now...
21:04
But afaik I did not leave any tracks there (maybe 1 answer or so?), as there is pretty few traffic, at least in comparison to AU.
au is one of the biggest SE sites out there
Third I think
SO, SU, AU
yep
SU?
Ah, Super User !?!
yes
going only by userbase.
if by questions, we're the #5 site
21:06
Does crap count???
yes
#4 for Q/D
because then we're #1
Time for some promotion?
#5 by answers
we're very low on the "answered questions" leaderboard
we are the 5th from the bottom with answered questions
I get the hint:
back to the Q&A!
bye
21:08
bye
guys, LIFEHACKS is beating us at answers/question!
it just started and has a kneejerk:serious ratio of 10:1/3
@Fabby No, I believe that's the efi partition. So, sorta.
Heeey, it's @Whaaaaaat :D
Then you'll need to grub-install after the move... You got a CD/usb ready for that???
hello pi
@Fabby I've got my LiveUSB
21:14
i'm back from my break
jrg
jrg
So my new laptop shipped. thanks @Seth for the recommendation.
/ (including /boot I believe) is on the second, ext4 partition.
opinion needed: what is the best intel i7 i can get for the least amount of money?
what is the point where the cost no longer meets performance?
5620k IIRC.
Or is the 5920k...
just a sec
21:16
970 @Whaaaaaat
@Virusboy That's GPU
i7 Intel 970
Ooooh.
True
that is my ultra-high-end-never-gon-happen-build.
intel EEs are over hyped
21:17
the sound settings i'm planning with that are awesome
also, @RPi_Awesomeness any good hardware raid devices? (must have raid10)
@Whaaaaaat Um. I'm not the person to ask - I haven't done anything with RAID and don't plan to for a while.
Anything Seagate/WD
because fakeraid is annoying.
@Whaaaaaat Um. I'm not the person to ask - I haven't done anything with RAID and don't plan to for a while.
doublepost
21:19
Avoid Seagate. WD is much better
O.o no avoid anything but seagate/WD
pi, what do you think of uberbuild there?
Avoid Seagate. WD is much better
jrg
jrg
If you're in a position to get like, 8 seagates and put them into a raid array...
then it's fine
i'd do a raid 110
jrg
jrg
21:20
lol
make 4 raid0s
put 2 raid0s together to make a raid1
@Whaaaaaat It's very good.
Though WD or Hitachi is better than Toshiba
HItachi is garbage
Well...I'm applying it.
put two raid10s to make a raid110.
jrg
jrg
21:21
get a WD
if you can. next best is a high-end seagate.
jrg
jrg
then everything else comes in
@Fabby If I can't boot, what to do with grub-repair?
jrg
jrg
they are all made in the same place, only diff is the warranty
@Whaaaaaat One thing I would suggest is getting the Define R5 - it's supposed to be one of the best cases out there. Or the NZXT H440.
They're both awesome cases
21:23
@jrg cool! I hope it works out for you :)
@RPi_Awesomeness boot livecd and do a
jrg
jrg
@Seth cool.
I personally hate gaming laptops, but I find I am in the minority :P
jrg
jrg
should arrive tomorrow.
(looking for your scxreenshot
jrg
jrg
21:24
Hey, couldn't beat the price for what it was.
@Seth you are not alone
@RPi_Awesomeness sudo grub-install /dev/sda
jrg
jrg
@Seth $1k for a quad, 16GB, 256SSD, 15", dedicated GPU. Was hard to find anything in that price range.
@jrg That's a decent deal :)
21:25
k. Applying.
Eek.
jrg
jrg
@RPi_Awesomeness good luck!
we are here for you if something breaks.
i find gaming laptops to break easier than standard laptops
@jrg oh quite right. Nothing against it or your getting it.
I also don't like red lol.
I would love a gaming laptop. Though a Dell XPS 13 wouldn't be bad either :D
Oh joy. Lots of data copying :)
@Seth i don't like them. i have one, but i'd much rather have a good desktop.
but i do like the portability of gaming.
user136984
21:30
Is it good to get a version of Ubuntu still in ALPHA development?
On a production machine, noooo
@Whaaaaaat where is the Rambus RAM in the Partpicker
or how can i tell?
Yay! We have boot!
And a 133GB SSD partition :)
user136984
And where can I enter and how can I enter the Ubuntu 15.04 Gnome Wallpaper Contest?
user136984
I heard that you have to do it through Flickr or something...
user136984
21:33
But not too sure.
I have to say. eOS Freya is very nice.

And, having a computer that can virtualbox is nice as well :D
sorry wrong chat.
21:47
For whatever reason, kdenlive keeps crashing with a segfault whenever I do multiple undos in a row.
processes are taken up else where?
Doubt it. Just kdenlive & Firefox are open...
It's a bug, but it's supposed to be fixed...
Microsoft's new #HoloLens is actually pretty sweet. http://t.co/BaGz72FcpN
Got a chance to try it.
Hi george
21:51
HoloLens being...their attempt at Google Glass?
no the over 9000 attempt at Google Glass
user136984
A new flag option should be created for closing a question if it has been answered in the comments and the asker has made it clear in the comments that their problem has now been fixed by this discussion in the comments.
user136984
As I see this very often.
user136984
And even though they are answered, because it is in the comments that this has happened they still go into the unanswered list.
@Toroidal Just convert the answer in the comments into an actual answer. Simple
21:57
its not against moral/ethic ideas and SE doesnt say no
user136984
I was wondering, I updated my JDK today (which obviously contains the JRE too). And to do so I just deleted the old one, and decompressed the tar.gz and edited my PATH variable in .bashrc. But when I ran the command "ControlPanel" in Terminal to launch the Java settings, it had saved all of my settings which I had set for the version that I deleted, so this must mean that the information was stored somewhere else on my system about the settings, so I was just wondering where that would be?
somewhere in usr or bin
where java would normaly be located for local settings
My build will start in 2 months with 2 parts
@Whaaaaaat No it doesn't.. Whaaaaaat?
giggles spastically
22:14
@Whaaaaaat This is the processor I was talking about. pcpartpicker.com/part/intel-cpu-bx80648i75820k
@Seth wat
Actually, I'd suggest switching your CPU to that and your mobo to this: pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-motherboard-x99ews
which one?
@Virusboy Knows what's what
my uber build or my possible one?
22:15
Well, what's the possible one?
@Whaaaaaat Use my build as a guide. I build this stuff for fun and could make a living off it
@Virusboy I follow nobody's advice.
Except my own
And maybe Journeyman's.
@Whaaaaaat I'd probably say Uber build for that CPU, since it's X99 and all
Can someone please star this for Oli: askubuntu.com/a/576330/344926 ??? (he should read "what the risks are"...
Then again...
I think that might actually be cheaper to go X99 in this case. Except for the RAM. Gosh DDR4 is expensive.
done.
@Whaaaaaat: still reading the WTFPL... Didn't know you had such a great sense of humour, but I suppose it goes with the personality! ;-)
im only doing that for RAM so i dont have to upgrade it, ever
@Fabby i'm actually going to use that license
22:19
I haven't read it through completely yet....
it's really not that much
the entire license: Just do whatever the **** you want. I don't give a ****. Just change the license if you redistribue this.
If it's compatible with the GPL, I'm contemplating of changing all my non-released open source stuff under that license...
prolly safer
user136984
Well goodnight to you all! I'm off to bed now! :)
22:21
As my sister always says: Don't sign anything until you've read it all!
(she's a lawyer)
:D :D :D
No License?
Sound interseting
looks at everyone sideways
MIT is a good license
Shhhh
I'm recording audio. Everyone be quiet
22:23
turns sideways so RPI sees me normally
@RPi_Awesomeness no
@RPi_Awesomeness I
YELL!!!!!
@Whaaaaaat Oh, that's good.
@RPi_Awesomeness not
@RPi_Awesomeness be
@RPi_Awesomeness quiet4\
@RPi_Awesomeness shall i bring a ping-puppet?
22:23
Oh good gravy
Thank goodness I don't have speakers or throughput enabled in Audacity
i can fix that
arbitrary code execution time!!!!
o/ @hbdgaf
I now have a build. It only costs 3500 and should take more than 6 months to buy everything
@Whaaaaaat ohai
my build is only 2k and i won't get it for 5 years
Oh gosh. My voice is so clogged up. AHEM HEM HEM
22:26
hem hem
MAH MAY MEE MAH MOO
--gagging noises--
^ my dad does that...it's so weird
Not the gagging
--earthquake sounds--
^ he does do that.
When he's snores, you'd swear the Polar Express was going by.
...in the middle of July
22:27
gg no re
Oh snap.I'm a rapper!
why is your profile picture your hand wrapped in toilet paper?
If you really want to get a build rolling, I've always just done a barebones kit with a mobo that will support all the junk you want. Then a few "special buy" parts to get it running a little with all the on-board components. Then over time you swap things out for the component you want and turn off all the onboard crap.
that's what it looks like
22:28
I'M A GOAT!
@hbdgaf that's my plan
it's still 1k for the core build
it does still look like that
sounds like you have a scotch taste on a beer budget.
i have a 500 year old whiskey taste on a tap water budget.
22:30
I can prolly find bundle packages in bare bones kits, this is more a check off list, but if I have to I will spend extra
@Whaaaaaat The last rig I built, I just did a 300 barebones kit black friday special... then spent more on a video card than I spend on the rest of the rig and salvaged the other components from local repair shops on rigs they junked.
Free parts are the best parts.
You want good deals?
^ that's my build that I just did.
I spent $623 on it - counting rebates & coupons & whatnot when I purchased.
That's a little light on the power supply isn't it? Unless you plan on dropping in a second one.
Remove the rebates, and it's ~$750. Or at least it was.
@hbdgaf Not really. 550W is plenty for what I've got and I don't plan on upgrading anything any time soon other than RAM or storage.
Okay. I'm just sort of a whore for power hungry video cards.
22:37
If I upgraded, it would be to the GTX 970, which is incredibly power efficient. I probably could stick with this PSU even if I upgraded. It'd be tight, but I could probably do it.
yea im over doing mine by 200W
Yeah. Just stuck the ASUS GTX 970 Strix in for fun and I've still got a headroom of over 100W.
Bad @Virusboy. Bad.
sorry but getting a 750 is stupid
@Virusboy My GPU?
Yeah, I don't ever, ever, ever trust spec sheets on W pull any more. "I had a bad experience", so I overshoot the mark by A LOT. I didn't like having a $600 brick for a month.
22:39
Gee, I leave the room to answer one question and it looks like:
no PS
dafuq
^ that too
22:39
is that... Nexon/EA?
That's how this room looks when you walk in after answering a question
It just proves we all multitask well.
A bunch of monkeys, screaming, bouncing and crapping all over the place... ;-)
@Fabby Same impression to me. Just highlighted a few sentences to remember, really almost ROFLing...
22:41
Well, at least I'm not crapping. I may be screaming and bouncing, but no pop here :)
@hbdgaf: I must admit: I'm bad at multi-tasking!
:)
Well that explains why it looks like a pile of crap instead of three conversations going on at once ;)
Okay. Honestly. I cannot say "this is a tutorial" with slurring together "this is a" into "thississa"
I have some form of strange lisp
No programming joke intended
sure you just aint drunk
eeYup hick. Ize totesally shober.
22:44
speaking of, whose cruel idea was it to put a s in the word lisp? "I'm thorry, I have a lithp"
2
@RPi_Awesomeness ^^
I lotht my lithp! I think I left it in my name.
The strangest quote from when I was younger
Dinnae ask me why I remember that.
Some friends of mine and I were playing with Schleich.
@Virusboy Dude. You're being racist against the Asians again...
lies @RPi_Awesomeness
@Virusboy get a 760 instead ;)
22:52
Where's that post from Jorge where he bigs up his budget gaming rig and the particular video card family? I think the 760 was the card.
Hm, yeah. I think he had one too, it was on the steam machine beta spec
So kind of an unofficial seal of approval there since steam used it.
I know I saw it pass my G+ feed. It was a sort of budget card with reasonable performance. No dream machine, but definitely a functional gaming rig from the linux side and so, by proxy, compat with most everything you would want to do on a desktop.
We got one for the projection computer at church as well, although I was scared they would need to replace the power supply.
The xps laptop has prime graphics... running into a problem where it won't so a second screen
I like my ASUS and my HP dv7 for that... They both work with a second monitor out of the box.
On the ASUS, it breaks the touchscreen, but I didn't really use it that much anyway.
Hm, maybe I'll go back to the opesource drivers an see if that is better, not running it for games or anything, just would be nice to hook it up to a monitor.
23:06
The hp dedicated nvidia is running binary drivers and pushes the second monitor fine. The asus is intel shared, and runs fine.
@Mateo PS?
PS?
@Virusboy Photoshop?
power supply
the 760
Its a laptop
Or were you asking about the other one?
It was like a standard dell 400-500 or something
@Fabby Ethernet server problem
23:19
On mine at home I think I have a 700w
@Mic1780: I'm here...
Shall we decamp to another room with less monkeys??? >:)
For theirs we needed a y-connetor and the two adapter cords that came with it.
Sure Ill create a room
Funny, was just watching 12 monkeys
Go ahead...
:D
@Mateo: extremely good movie!
Especially the time machine!
I'm off
23:32
I am getting a 1KW PS just to be safe
I just need to find some RAMBUS
@Mateo - I know you're domestic. You have any thoughts on how big the cybering your cybers legislation getting not so much detail in the state of the union address bodes for that whole situation?
