@hbdgaf You still awake?
@Fabby Hi there and good morning ;D! I yesterday finally managed to enter just 5 minutes after you left. There was a setting in firefox's about:config that was wrong, but now I'm here.
:) What time is it now?
I have 13:11 local time. Hey, it's weekend - why should I get up before diner?
Sorry for the late reply: the system was swapping...
I had to kill off a big task.
So, what did you want to talk about?
@ByteCommander: hullo?
12:16
@Fabby I'm re-awake. I took a nap.
@hbdgaf Awake every 4 hours, hey?
Sorry, got disturbed. Nothing special, just a bit chatting.
Only answering people's questions and getting downvotes is not really exciting...
@ByteCommander: so you poor schmuck still has to support an XP machine, right?
@Fabby something like that. It gets a little odd on the weekends, when I don't have work to do a long cycle in the middle and I have to resync on Monday...
schmuck? what do you mean (sorry, I'm no native speaker - living in Germany)
12:18
@ByteCommander: that's one of the things I'm trying to change: that people on the site become a little nicer but alas...
Kein Problehm!
@ByteCommander You know british english? The poor sod is how it would be said there...
Schmuck is (lemme thing of the german word)
der Beknackte comes close
I know this English that i'm getting taught at school and that I read about in pc books etc, but until now I did not understand any of you
poor soul is another English term
okay, now i got it finally.
12:21
Dein Englisch ist besser den mein Deutsch!
denn?
As isst es: den oder denn?
yes, there is little budget on new computers/os, thats one reason why I switched to Ubuntu on my (second hand) laptop
Es isst zeit 20 Jahre das ich Kein Deutsch mehr geschrieben habe...
besser ALS mein Deutsch ;D
So let's keep English
You see?
and isst means eat
12:23
Understanding is stil 90%, but talking or writing... :(
ist?
it is = es ist
There you go!
:D
You see that your English is better then my German???
Yes, but English is definitely 300% easyer than German!
Not really: German grammar is easier,
How comes that you are able to speak German anyhow? Where are you from?
12:24
but English spelling is a nightmare!
I had a German GF...
Okay, german spelling might be easyer, but grammar???
Sorry! yes!
German grammar is more difficult then English
but English spelling is more difficult then German
E.g. Worcestershire and Leicester Square
How do you pronounce these???
Wuste and Leste...
Anyway, how come you program microcontrollers?
building robots???
There is a joke "Deutsche schreiben <Wie bitte?> und sagen <Hä?>"!
:D
That's an exception.
Zug is Zug
Bonn is an exception to the rule
It should be "Bon"
Yes, quite. I'm in my last school year before A-levels in March
12:29
17 then?
:P
no, adult - and last year there was a program at the lokal university called sia
Do you build robots? I'm interested why you're interested in micro-controllers...
... which means about student engineer academy. We there got the task to build an e-Bobbycar
Got a pic?
Smoke! BRB!
which means we got a BobbyCar and a qfix-Soccerboard (ATmega128 + some Hardware) and a solar panel and an e-motor and stuff
and finally after one year we had an economic e-car for kids
wait, I'll search one.
12:34
@hbdgaf: so you're British?
@Fabby No. I find that a lot of my Europe based friends can get British expressions more than American expressions. So, it's easier me to translate... since I mostly don't know their native tongues.
And since I also hear British expressions a bit, and can make the leap without being told from context, I just find that an easier way to explain more often.
:) Good man!
I've got a mix between the two: so sometimes I'l use the American and sometimes I'll use the British term
Silver bullet, locked and loaded, riding shotgun, talking to a man about his horse, ...
All the cowboy terms are American! ;-)
But some I don't know where I've got them from.
I do like some of the German loan words. schadenfreude is a great one. I had a markedly British woman I worked with at one point. If you got her really worked up, or she told a story from her childhood, she would revert to British words... like "My father was riding his bike, and a Lorry mirror picked him up from under his coat" etc etc.
you East Coast or West Coast??
Fingerspitzengefühl!
FLAK!
I've been both and central, but East Coast right now.
12:39
You know those 2 German words?
the first one would be translated by "I feel it in my water"
No. I only usually learn them one someone tells me one. I find that I often like them.
and the second one is a WWI term, so I suppose known in the US as well!
@ByteCommander That's pretty neat.
@ByteCommander: very cool!
Finger = finger
spitz = top
gefühl = sensitive
basically one word to say "I feel it in the tips of my fingers"
12:41
I googled it and found a translation that makes sense to me. It's sort of like "intuit" or "make the leap to the answer"
more then that:
what about "kindergarten" "rucksack" "sauerkraut" "blitzkrieg" "wunderkind"?
Like when you type a console command without your brain interfering....
Okay, so it also connotes a sort of muscle memory
@ByteCommander 4 of 5.
you look at what you just typed and go: "Gosh, I didn't even think of that"
yes!!!
That was what I was looking for!
muscle memory = "fingerspitzengefühl"
12:43
Nice one.
and FLAK is Flugzeug Luft Abwher Kannone
so when the British and the Americans were getting heavy resistance flying bomber missions over Germany, they received "FLAK"
Flak = heavy resistance.
Yeah, I checked. Is it a connotation word too? I've seen flak used here as something like "I'm just giving you shit." or "I'm just joking even if it's a little harsh"
But @ByteCommander 's words are better
Kindergarten :-)
rucksack is I think a WWI term.
Yeah, I knew them. I didn't know kindergarten came from german, but I knew the rest. blitzkreig from chess when I was like 14.
:D
Do you know the word bakelite?
12:46
no
@ByteCommander? you?
"Bakeliet"?
That was the first plastic around...
it is still used today in stuff that needs to be heat-resistant
Like server plugs.
Like bullet proof telephones ;) that can be used as melee weapons.
:D
That's Kevlar.
But having Fingerspitzengefühl is more like to be very careful (sorry, got disturbed again for a minute)
Bakelite breaks easily
12:48
and rucksack is just backpack
yes, that too!
yup!
@Hi, Rinzwind!
Another one whose withdrawal was getting too much for him!
:D
need c o n n e c t
;)
@ByteCommander I think I understand that bit of connotation then. People that have a large degree of muscle memory about a thing would also tend to be careful or precise. You don't get really good at something through repetition and do it automatically by doing it wrong a lot. This is why I like some of these loan words. rucksack not so much a good one. The ones I like are the complex ones that you have to see from several angles to really get the word.
It just makes me respect UN translators a lot more, because they have like a 5 second read-ahead in their brain, and they can't stall or it's over.
Same at the EU commission and parliament
12:54
Yeah, so you know what I mean.
Indeed! I once had to play translator between a French client and an American high-level engineer.
But I could tell him to hold on while I translated some finer details that mean nothing in French...
like "silver bullet"
We had a tri-lingual instructor in highschool. It was fun to get her spooled up, because she'ld switch at random. You'ld get a sentence of gibberish unless you knew all 3.
:D
@Fabby Hah, yeah.
some things translate perfectly in many languages though "snowball effect" is one of them.
Every one in Western culture understands
But E.G. in South Africa it just means nothing!
Same as in wearing a green suit in the US is not done,
in Italy you never wear green socks!
12:57
Yeah, I can't see a language worth learning that doesn't have an expression for something continuing to gain momentum out of control. There has to be an equivalent expression for them.
They used "dam break"
Everyone has a dam in their garden for the dry season....
In the US, a green suit makes suppliers or customers subconsciously think of money
In Italy it means "dumb"
because (andthat show how agrarian Italy is)
Yeah. I can get that... it's like blue being used in advertising et al with color connotations/instincts.
samesame
"you've got green socks" means: "you've been running wearing white socks without shoes in the green grass"
(and now the white socks are green) and that's pretty dumb!
So if a foreigner wears green socks, it's a cause of hilarity in Italy!
:)
So, it would relate significantly to the expression mostly related to deep south government supported people "barefoot and pregnant"
Yeah!
That's a good one!
another: Q: "whose fault is it if a woman comes out of her kitchen?"
A: "Her husband's: he made the chain too long!"
13:04
that one could be from my former french/"gemeinschaftskunde" (community science?) teacher!
oh no. we're moving towards the misogynist jokes. i never found a woman i didn't want working a job just like me. i'll take out the trash and mow the yard if she cleans the house. if she wants me to clean the house, it's fine we'll rotate. it's my markedly fair response to women's lib.
I'm the cook here!
I'm also the washer woman, the cleaner
I just don't like ironing!
(only my own shirts!)
that's fine. the last successful one i had, we rotated cooking duty. and i've always ironed my own shirts.
Women's blouses are just too finicky for me!
she wants to cook, but...
... she's home later then me most of the times
and my grub is just better!
@ByteCommander: you know any good misogynist jokes?
Yeah. As long as you can agree on a balance.
I've got them, but I don't put them here on AU. It's not something for polite company... and since it's public and documented for all eternity... just saying.
13:09
I don't mind cooking every day as long as she brings home some KFC once/month and a pizza once/month
And there's your balance.
:D
I cooked every saturday morning and afternoon, because she bought sushi and beer on friday night. BALANCE
I disagree. For Archaeologists in the future to find these things when men are extinct,
we should use them today!
:D
Good one!
I remember telling my cousin's husband:
"look back and tell me what you see"
"my wife"
"And what is she carrying?"
"a crate of beer"
So, YOU'VE GOT THE PERFECT WIFE!
(she still reminds him about that one...)
;-)
Yeah. I had something similar to that happen where a fellow looked at me all crazy and said "Geez, that's really out there. You might want to be careful with that one." my response: "Nope. That means she's a keeper"
13:14
>:)
Yup!
Is she still?
(being kept?)
We had a budgeting disagreement and I came home to an empty house with a pillow and a blanket on the floor one day.
Been there, did that, got the t-shirt
The only thing I found was the micro-wave...
I still think they were planning to get back and take that one too... >:)
smoke!
Better off for it though. I own my walls and floor now. Shame she didn't hold out that long. Anyway, I've bought a microwave for a single mother before just because no 12 year old shouldn't be without a microwave.
@Fabby what smoke detector are you watching?
12 yr old was the daughter, not the mother. The mother was all self aggrandized as "I been doing this myself for so long, it's fine. I'm used to it." my response: "So, you're not part of a team. You just do it yourself all the time. Now you have a car full of clothes, an empty apartment with no furniture or appliances, and a 12 yr old. Seems like you're making the right decisions..."

Q: Establish communication between Arduino Mega & Linux Terminal in Ubuntu 14.10

shekhar sumanI am failing regularly in establishing syncing between my arduino mega(/dev/ttyACM0) and the terminal. Even I thought of establishing output using GNU Screen utility. The terminal just hangs for nothing, no display comes out and I ain't able to achieve it. OBJECTIVE :- To send characters l...

:( Yeah...
Oh, and the smoke detector???
My lungs!!! :D :D :D
I went out for a smoke!
(on the balcony)
13:21
Cool. I can do that without leaving the keyboard.
I don't smoke inside any more...
I understand. It makes a lot of sense.
Reminds me of a ConfCall I had with the US:
Me: "Cut the chit-chat gys, are we finished or not?"
"because I'm dying to get a fag outside!"
(silence)
me: "OK, what other gaffe did I do now?"
oh noes....
Couldn't be persuaded though. I did my part to try and fix it. Like: "Oh, so you're a sm that just got an apartment, you have nothing, and you need everything. Are you throwing a house-warming party? You know, where you invite everyone over, cook some food, and have a party. Everyone brings you something you need for your house." -- "Well no." >.>
someone: "You mean 'smoke', right?"
<Sigh>
13:23
Well, it was bundle of sticks, cigarette, or something else. I would have guessed cigarette.
Yeah...
He called me back later to explain the fine details of the American word "fag"
;)
Oh, so you didn't know...
Even better.
Nope...
Now I do!
>:)
@KasiyA are you sure deleting a log is the correct method? I would assume emptying them is the better approach (since a log that is open might error out the running software)
So did you throw a house warming party?
13:26
I didn't. I bought my camper with all the appliances in it. I just told her it was the thing to do. She wouldn't listen, so I bought a microwave that I had to get out of my department anyway since it didn't have a shelf placement, gave it to her with a gift receipt, so it could be returned if she wanted, and moved on.
:-)
You can't fix stupid.
:D Didn't Einstein say smtg about that???
;-)
@hbdgaf GIGA :=)
I'm off doing some question hunting...
13:27
(Garbage In Garbage Out :=) )
Nice talking to you!
I did that a while ago: Answered a question with "vague question, vague answer"
and then flagged it!
:D
@Rinzwind I'm not sure that relates, but okay. I'll move on for the time being. I have stuff to get done this weekend too.
@hbdgaf :D ok
Hm, also have some homework left. Essay about "Jesus in modern music". Eewwww... :P

what does the wget option O- do in this line? wget -qO- get.elabftw.net|sh
@j0h: write to stdout. For more info: man wget
@ByteCommander Prince has a lot of that >:-D or is that not modern anymore
14:27
@Rinzwind Hey, thanks for your help! Sorry, but I don't even know him. Have you some links or examples for me?
@ByteCommander: I know who Prince is, but have no clue what the Jesus reference is about.
@Toroidal lurking in the shadows! ;-)
Oh, hey. Back again? How much rep did you harvest?
Still busy...
Only 55 until now...
Respect. That is more I earned until now in a whole day (except today because of the association bonuses)
@Fabby But you dont really want me to read through that article? I would grow a beard until I reach the bottom. ;D
No, It's an artist is all what I wanted to say!
14:38
@ByteCommander here is a list of references in his music prince.org/msg/7/357806
And @Rinzwind needs to tell you all about Jesus and Prince as I have no clue
too late @Fabby
Speaking of Jesus!
There he is!
ROTFL
I Would Die 4 U
is suppose to reference Jesus and not Appelonia (the girl in the movie Purple Rain)
@Rinzwind Already found this, but its also a huge page I don't really like to read just to find one song example I can interprete.
14:40
you want 1 song of 1 artist?
@Rinzwind No, I need about 3-5 songs. One I have for sure (some Metal from HB), but I would like to have some others from different genres.
aha and how old can the song be?
@Rinzwind Modern music, so at least 20th century I would say. Everything from pop to rock and maybe reggae, rap hiphop, whatever you might know.
does it have to be a direct or ironic reference? ;p
14:43
@JourneymanGeek Most positive about Jesus, but I'd like to have one negative example too
posted question at Christianity.SE, but they hated it. Awful that I now get answers from the Ubuntu community. HUGE LIKE!
Jesus don't want me for a sunbeam ;p
have to go afk some minutes, will be back soon...
I'm not much help otherwise. I was in a christian school like... 15-16 years ago ;p
I never visited a christian school. Most in Holland have been open for all religion and had hardly any religion in school
How about Marilyn Manson's "Personal Jesus" ????
>:)
14:51
good one :D
I'm playing it! >:)
second time youtube made my system unresponsive... I'll think I'll reboot...
(saw an update flying by)
Back again. Thanks @Rinzwind, @JourneymanGeek and @Fabby for your help!
had a hard time finding a good song from Prince. Most are too direct or are towards "god" and not Jesus
15:07
@Rinzwind This problem occured to me too. If it was that easy as I thought at the beginning, I would not have bothered anybody else with it.
Personal Jesus sounds nice, but I think I prefer the cover from Johnny Cash.
Personal Jesus refers not to Jesus though :+)
@Rinzwind But I can interprete it so that today's people search for somebody like Jesus to forgive them their sins and stuff, but they find only (contrary of religious? saecular?) redemption, can't I? What's your opinion?
Now you've got one against and a ton for!
@JourneymanGeek I like Nirvana and jesus doesnt want me for a sunbeam sounds great, but there is not much text I can interprete, so this is not really something I can use. I'll put it on my playlist though.
Christian rock...
15:22
@Fabby Yeah, thanks. I already read the german article, but if I go through the whole text I again have to shave twice ;)
:D
@Toroidal: Have a look at my last edits
@ByteCommander: where are you now?
In a public library???
Did you leave your PC unattended?
here, at home. I was looking at my question at christianity.SE. Look what they did to it! Awful! christianity.stackexchange.com/questions/36466/…
@Rinzwind: I've seen something like this: askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits/366795 before
Have a look at that too! @ByteCommander
Looks like your session got hijacked.
user136984
@Fabby: Ahh, yes the formatting didn't go quite as expected there... Ooops! :D
Do you have a practical joke brother?
@Toroidal: the reason for the code blocks
is to improve readability
maikng one huge 128 char line makes it worse
user136984
15:32
@Fabby: Yes, sorry, I will keep that in mind next time... :)
@Fabby What do you mean?
No! Don't be sorry!
We live and we learn
@Fabby And what should I do with this review link?
Naah
False alarm!
It was one of these F*cking tests!
Nothing!
Disregard!
:(
The system "tests" the reviewers.
And when I saw vandalism coming from you, I knew this couldn't be true!
but alas, the system was testing me whether I saw it was vandalism or not!
You confuse me. My Firefox restarted, if that matters. but what about the review? Vandalism? HUH??? what?
user136984
15:35
I just failed one of those tests... Because the test had a grammatical error that I wanted to fix... :D
<Sigh> I only ever failed 2 tests and they were close tests!
:D
@ByteCommander: the higher up in the food chain,
the more work you get.
reviewing new posts
old posts
edits
etc ...
yeah, nice, but what has this to do with me?
So to ensure you're doing a good job, the system every now and then interjects some "fake" edits
and I just got a "fake" edit COMING FROM YOU! :D
(so you didn't do anything wrong, your session didn't get hijacked!)
It was me freaking out on a stupid test!
I hate that!
:(
Anyway: @Toroidal: You get it right? Improve the readability! ;-) And don't be sorry: I saw this happening to someone else, so I just learned from their mistake!
You've made the mistake yourself and if you learn, you're OK! :) :) :)
user136984
@Fabby: Yes, next time I will have a closer look to see that I haven't just made it more unreadable... :D
:D Good man!
user136984
15:41
:)
Oh, and change your home page: it looks like something from the 90s
user136984
Which homepage?
user136984
What the website link I gave?
Chat up a nice, friendly, cute (but not hot!) artistic girl and let her do some drawings for you!
Yours?
user136984
Yeah, well I actually have lost FTP access to that site... So unless I get my old (virus infested) Mac OS X 10.3.9 back up and running with Dreamweaver CS1, and backup my FTP password and then decrypt it, there is not much chance of me getting back to and updating my own site. :D
15:43
Meh, make a new one then and have the domain name transferred...
How old are you?
user136984
I rather not say.
No worries
You're in your teens... Listen to some seduction advice from an old fart:
if you know a girl that's a bit artistic, but not technical
Go up to her and tell her:
I've seen some of your great artwork, could you help me with my website?
If she says "yes": Good!
user136984
Ok! :D Will do! :D
If she says no: move to another one! ;-)
user136984
