so, uh bioshock infinite is downloading on my linux box, wonder if it is actually there or another steam oops
01:17
hm, seems only the data files.
arg, some idiot hit a light pole and took power from a mile or so worth of people including myself. it's back now though.
welcome back
at least i'm not living in india where outages are common...
01:30
and in other news a friend of mine got a moderator on XDA sending him insults in PMs because he said he didn't like or trust one of his apps..
well then...
A moderator for goodness sake!
i don't like your app, so i won't speak to you. thank goodness the world doesn't operate that way. i don't like AV, but i still speak to people that work at mcafee/symantec... because it doesn't make them not smart or entertaining. it makes them doing something i think is useless, but they're allowed to waste their time if they want.
in related news things i do that people think are worthless, i finished that talib wrapper first sweep. still have to check on multiple in multiple outs, but it sort of works.
What kind of an error message is this???
My humanity is "suspect"?
Wha...?
typing too fast?
01:42
well you are a Penguin. Smart website.
@NathanOsman it's a polite way to say we think you are a bot. maybe a little cheeky, but polite-ish.
It doesn't tell me what I did wrong though.
I entered a valid email address and a valid username.
that's normal. do people in your real life tell you what you did wrong?
maybe copy paste?
03:13
@Seth Precisely.
Guys? What to do with this:
?
Seems like another bot edit...kinda?
03:27
Just ordered one of these. It'll be interesting to see how well it works. I also ordered a USB to 5V barrel adapter to power it.
@NathanOsman Sweet! I wish I had money to do stuff like that :(
@NathanOsman What's your input on my review q above?
It was a gift in my case.
@NathanOsman Nice :D
Lucky person who's getting that :)
I'm actually trying to figure out how to share my internet connection from my laptop to my Pi.
I had to leave my WiFi dongle at home on my desktop 'cause massive 7+ GB downloads that take literally 24hrs+ on my internet.
And, so my Pi has no internet connection - which I need for my project I'm working on.. :P
I need to order another one of those Edimax USB dongles from Amazon...
@RPi_Awesomeness No, no - it was a gift from someone else to me :)
@NathanOsman oooh :) But you said you ordered it. They pay?
03:32
Yes.
04:31
good morning
@Oli do you think the answer about SQLeo should really be deleted in this question?

Q: using mobile broadband with a dongle

dilantha111I am using a 3g dongle to access internet. But only a one time I could connect to the internet by using it. I followed the step that I have followed when I could successfully connect to the internet but it seems don't work again. the steps that i followed are first adding a new connection type as...

If anyone has filled pdf forms using Ubuntu-firefox-adobe reader or Ubuntu-anything else setup, can you verify if it is possible to select option from drop down menus(for ex. selecting your country from list of all countries). I'm wondering if this is a feature of adobe reader 9.5.5+ versions, which are not available for Linux. BTW I'm trying to fill this form sarathi.nic.in:8443/UF/pdfforms/NewLicence.pdf

Q: Is there an official point of view towards leading people away from the site into "private" spaces?

Jacob VlijmI really, really (really) don't want to be personal, be sure the question is in general. Occasionally, you run into posts/threads like this. The answer is accompanied by a series of gloomy comments in which the answerer seems to fight with an imaginary enemy, which in itself creates a questiona...

@deostroll I remember seeing a check box for that somewhere... or just use sublime or something else
I'm a little upset that I can't have all the things I like from sublime in atom AND that I can't have the stuff I like from atom in sublime... >.>
Yeah... Got them both installed on my laptop
I find myself going back and forth between them depending on what I'm doing.
In other news, the talib wrapper wrapper is about done. I have about 20 specific LoC pain points to deal with now inside the 900 lines. So, progress.
Are you aware of any indication that something builds right without multi-arch but pkgconfig fails to do its job on installations with multiarch? That's something I'm running in to presently.

help
my ram only detected 6GB
help please

@JO
@JourneymanGeek please help
You need to calm down
and ask more coherently.

ok 1st i install ubuntu 12.04 32 bit
and it detected 8GB
of RAM
but when i install ubuntu 14 64 bit its just 6GB of RAM
i tried using free -m its just 6000
do u know how to make this ram to 8GB detected?
my VGA is 2GB
i need to use it as server, application is very heavy coz its java
shared video is the 2. my answer is "deal with it." it's doing what it's supposed to do.
Those two shouldn't be related.
Could you run 'top'?
ok i runned top
Assuming its shared video. I don't think onboard GPUs have that much memory
DON'T gimme a dump
@hbdgaf huh, strange
14:31
ok i will share a pic
just tell me what it says next to

Also pastebin the contents of lshw.

@Mateo_ it's more than one package, if you google it - it's about the base math library where things like sin and cos live. It works on a base server x64 or x86 install, but it borks if multiarch is present. read as fine in a server VM but craps out on my laptop
ah sorry
looks like its my fault
sorry sorry
@hbdgaf maybe why a lot are still making seprate packages?
14:34
:p i executed free -m in ssh
sorry its my fault
omg ,
yea its detected 8GB now
thanks anyway
@Mateo_ that's the thing, it's not related. if i just run configure make make install, it shouldn't try to use other arch libs... but pkgconfig gets all confused and says it can't find the base math lib.
Maybe explicitly telling it to use the 386 one in dependencies?
maybe. the problem is, it builds fine as x64 native if multiarch isn't around... but once it is - it pukes.
Oh, so maybe the other way around
It might be trying to use the other when it needs the 64 bit libs
14:40
Possibly. If you just add the library dependency to the makefile config - it builds and runs fine though. It's a really baffling bug.
14:54
Good morning all
What the hell, my computer is on fire, I'll shutdown for a while..
@Lucio o.O
@Lucio That is literally the most concerning random comment I've heard yet. Are you for real?

1 hour later…
16:08
@Lucio oh dear... Power supply?
I had one start smoking once.
@RPi_Awesomeness No, I meant it is hot.
@Mateo_ didn't reached that level yet
The summer makes no good for desktop computers.
One more and I will reach 1K flags :)
need to turn it off again :(
16:45
@Lucio Ah :) That's good :D
@Mateo_ Eek!
Going back home tomorrow - back to my lovely desktop with hopefully Portal 2 and TF2 installed :D
17:19
Well...that was interesting. Was mucking about with trying to connection share from my Ubuntu laptop to my Pi...and managed to somehow utterly destroy my networking...
do you have a network cable plugged in on the laptop?
I did, but I removed it...
I was able to view the boot messages and it said something along the lines of waiting for network connections
ah, you might have undo what you did to try and share
Yeah, I think I've done that. I've got networking back, so hopefully we're good to go
Boy, I'm apparently rather suspect. I've been getting all sorts of review audits - seems every 10 or so I get another!
My guess is you started a dhcp server on your upstream interface and started dhclient on your downstream interface. It would match those symptoms.
17:35
@hbdgaf Sounds similar to what I was messing around with. I'm just gonna wait and use my WiFi dongle at home.
Edimax USB dongle is on sale on Newegg right now for $7, gonna grab me one of those
I've already got one, originally for my Pi, but I have to use it for my desktop - so I need a second.
I like the ath black usb wifi card. If you're going to eat something, eat well.
Eh, the Edimax USB dongle works fine for what I need. Besides, I don't have that much money to spend on WiFi :P
My internet is slow enough that that would be a bit overkill.
sure
i'm not going to spend a hundred fifty bucks on a keyboard or anything, but 25 for a decent wireless card is a no brainer. still, we choose our own hardware.
17:42
@hbdgaf Yes, that's a good point, but I'm afraid I can't afford that :( Besides, this is just for my Pi.
Being in HS has many-a-drawback
if i were you, i'ld wait longer and get the better one. i've cheaped out on the wrong components before and regretted it trying to build something, because i was broke.
@hbdgaf These aren't cheap. They're basically the recommended WiFi dongle for the Pi and I've only had good luck with them/
Fair enough. We all have choices to make.
Besides, I've already got my desktop built, running and connected with one of these. I'm just getting this for my RPi
kk, was just putting in my 2 cents. there's a reason the hardware recommendation tag is subject to napalm.
17:46
lol. Thanks for the recommendation though, I'll definitely remember that.
I take it you've had good experiences with that?
The ath9k driver and the alfa black play nicely together. It was my first successful with all options usb wireless adapter (think hostapd and the rest of the funhouse).
In other news, I think a sandwich with rice and beans for a side is going to be my staple for the next couple of months.
ah, I think I bought an atheros card, and I have another laptop that has one of their chips, they worked nice out of box
17:51
Rice & beans :D
@Mateo_ ath makes nice stuff... and they're committed to their open source driver unlike a lot of other vendors
@hbdgaf The edimax is an Atheros chip too ... I believe
It's possible. Haven't checked. I can if you want me to, but I doubt you're getting an ath9k N card for $7
Most of the time, the really cheap cards are realtek or broadcom
@hbdgaf No, doubtful.
Oh, hey. Look at that:
They show it on a Pi. How cool :D
Edimax official website nonetheless
Yeah, I don't like low-pro cards. No real antenna etc.
Still, if that's all you need, then that's all you need.
17:58
@hbdgaf Yeah. It's on my Pi and on my desktop. My desktop is almost directly above the router in my house and the Pi, well, it's the Pi and I don't do much online with it
Ah. Never mind. It's a Realtek
Called it... like a boss
I think I have a few realtek ones, I think they were one of the few that worked on the android that the cubieboard had
Realtek is popular for people that don't need any of the advanced feature sets... like hostapd on N.
@RPi_Awesomeness can't wait till they go full steam ahead with the steam machines :)
18:02
@Mateo_ Eh. I'd rather build my own.
Granted, they'll probably look nicer than a built one, but still.
womp womp I think a controller octopus for mame would go over even better, but meh... maybe it's just me.
And, it's gonna take 20 minutes, great.
Oh shutup Wendell
that is what I'll do as well, but waiting on the controller and them expanding all the media and stuff on steamOS
That would take me ~12 hrs
18:14
Hey guys. Is it true that the launcher file standard says you can't use ~ to represent the user's home directory?
yeah, I think it doesn't work last time I checked?
kk, muru as pointing this out to me in one of my answers. I honestly didn't know that.
would be nice, so the user didn't need to edit "USERNAME" to their username...
but oh well
@Mateo_ ikr
What I want is for my blog is have the same formatting as SE. I would love that.
I wonder if there's a WP plugin for that...
markdown
@RPi_Awesomeness there should be, are you running your own
or on the wordpress.com site
18:19
@Mateo_ on wp.com :P
Hi all :)
I would like a small clarification on using pushd...
The stack automerges two successive entries with same path... Is there a way to override this behaviour?
OMG! YAY!
for instance from my current dir if I do pushd and then popd... It acts as if only popd has been called...
pushd, stack? do you have a reference question or something showing what you are trying to do?
18:24
@Mateo_ Thanks a ton! This is going to make writing my blog a ton easier :D
@RPi_Awesomeness markdown is awesome :)
@Mateo_ ikr
Ooo...I'm finding all sorts of awesome formatting stuff :D
@Mateo_ Thanks for the response...
I want to automate package installation using a function that I would like to include in my `.zshrc`... so the function goes like this...
`pushd <source_dir_path>`; install commands; popd;
This works well when I am not in the `source_dir_path` but when I am in the `source_dir_path`, the `pushd <source_dir_path>` has no effect. However since popd is called after installation commands..., the popd removes pwd from stack top putting me in a different directory...
Hrm. Using `CODEHERE` doesn't seem to be working...
Ya :D
function install {
   pushd /media/foo
   sudo python  setup.py install
   popd
}
18:49
hm, interesting.
was looking at this from a google search so far: mylinuxbook.com/…
"pushd saves the current working dir onto the directory stack, and changes to a new directory" from a comment
so it would go back to what was default? say maybe the home folder or what ever folder you were in when running the function?
Yea... :(
as a stopgap solution I just rewrote to check if it is in /media/foo and skip the pushd / popd... But I feel there must be a better way...
As such pushd "$(pwd)" has no effect...
How did `CODE suddenly start working :D
ah, maybe the sudo bit? dosn't root do it's own directory or something
You mean sudo pushd?
maybe not...
pushd doesn't accept any flags too... So I guess checking if its in /media/foo and skipping pushd / popd is probably the only way :(
Anyway thanks a tonne @Mateo_ :)
18:59
you want to install in /media/foo but then go back to the directory you were in right?
sup?
Yea :)
maybe:
sudo -s
pushd /media/foo
python setup.py install
popd
exit
Ahh... that works like a charm... Thanks a lot :D What does it do? does it calls another subshell or something?
something like that, found it on here:

Q: Change directory using sudo

unknown google userHow to I change into a directory owned by root? If I do: sudo cd RootOwedDir I get: sudo cd: command not found If I su root I get: authentication failure, probably because I never really set up an actual root account. What am I doing wrong here?

Thanks again :D
19:03
because root does it's own directory stuff to prevent accidents ;)
Hmm... thats good to know... makes it simple and clean... =)
well, I'm out. glad I could help.

hope everyone had a nice holiday, and I hope you all have a nice new year.
21:23
@ThomasW. The same to you! :D
@Seth Are people who just gained access to the review queues audited more than users who've been around for a while? I've been audited a ton lately, way more than I ever am on RPi.SE...
21:53
@RPi_Awesomeness audits are random, last I heard.
I don't think they have changed it.
unless you're in a IP block flagged down for abuse
then it might be more frequent
anyone able to reproduce what I see here? meta.unix.stackexchange.com/questions/3305/…

when I go to ssh into a remote shell, and launch the session via a panel applet, ssh opens XTerm. But i want it to open term, or mate-terminal, or gnome-terminal instead. I allways used to open up a regular terminal.. I really hate xterm, how can I configure panel applets to launch term by default? I saw this last year and solved it, but i cant find the thread.
mmmm. I think I might know how, but it has been a while since I tried.
I'm trying to think..
I'm going to have to set up a VM and try for myself. @j0h Are you running MATE?

23:04
Erg, I just tried to side swipe out of chrome on android...
Really liking Ubuntu touch so far
23:27
@NathanOsman what applications are you thinking of for you pi touch shield? a tablet perhaps?
I'm thinking of setting up a command and control center in my bedroom, perhaps.
Something that displays appointments, weather forecasts, status updates, etc.
Also something that connects (via Bluetooth) to my phone to enable audio playback.
P.S. Blender crashes much.
@NathanOsman Interesting. I like the concept of using those sainsmart TFT adapters to DIY an open phone or open tablet device. I suppose the reduced scope you're looking at makes sense as a starter project.
@NathanOsman Have you thought about subscribing to UE4 for a month, just to get a source pull?
Reduced scope? If I accomplish everything I want to with this project, it will make my PC look like a toaster.
Heh, I more meant a static target set of apps instead of looking like an android handheld.
