ooo...Canonical Art Crew, Here I come!
@RPiAwesomeness looks good!
Yay! Praise for days!
<< does not speak for canonical in any way, and is not and has never been associated with any canonical dev team
lol
Here's two other versions
jrg
jrg
I want a nice, solid web 2.0 project that doesn't deal with PDFs, CSV or ecommerce. it'll probably take me the next 2 months to find it, and once I do I will want to work for them forever. :P
flat bottom is "mo betta"
Of those two I like the first better...but the second isn't terrible
kk. Yay! Updated graphics on my blog, here I come!
@hbdgaf I would star that, but I might lose my spot on the starred bar... >:D
signs in as his sock to start himself... jkjk
00:06
lol
jrg
jrg
(before someone accuses him of doing exactly that, that was me)
well, you're a mod. You're forgiven
@Mateo Thanks for the base idea of pictogram
@hbdgaf Thanks for the book + star idea & all the help along the way.
Also, thanks to @Seth @Rinzwind @jrg @badp and @NathanOsman for all the input :D
There.
Good ideas are good ideas. We all have them. We all refine them. Then something good comes out the other end... usually
jrg
jrg
and when it doesn't, it probably was because we secretly didn't believe it was that good of a idea
00:08
Hah! I've had that happen fo sho!
or we got bored, or lazy, or blahblahblah yacket schmakety taz
don't taze me bro
Now to get to work on a replacement for the Raspberry Pi version!
00:12
:P I can only say one thing to that thought. TOMORROW
jrg
jrg
@hbdgaf I do that alllll the time.
@hbdgaf lolololololol
Anyone here tried out the Ubuntu Desktop Next ISO yet?
o/
@RPiAwesomeness it is rough, but going to be cool once the start fixing things
Does it work in any manner, way, shape, or form, beyond booting and crashing?
Cool!
I want to try it out, dunno if my PC could handle it though :P
er, my main desktop is rubbish on it, no login freezing crashing missing text
00:16
i thought about it and went all "ohh, that's tempting" then heard my inner de niro say "it's a good plan, let's stick to the plan" /ronin excerpt
Is the requirements for RAM/CPU any worse than 14.04?
but tried it on a i5 laptop and It worked fine
@RPiAwesomeness who knows at this point, but should be less once they get it going - think what works on tablets
ah. Well, I don't think I shall be trying it until I build my PC in september than
@RPiAwesomeness theoretically requirements should be going down, not up. that's why it doesn't work everywhere. the optimizations break the universe
ah
Convergence....
00:18
are you sure you didn't mean divergent?
lol. Did you see that movie?
i like it. i like it a lot
I kinda wanted to see it. However, restrictive parents happened
i keep forgetting you're not an adult. not really
00:20
@hbdgaf No male is, really ;p
xD
good point
@JourneymanGeek wow. just wow.
@NathanOsman I have to say, the new penguin is great
@hbdgaf Just talk to GnomeSlice or Chippies on The Bridge. So many times they've suggested I do something and I can't because of my parents, they think my parents are the worst thing in the universe.
I don't talk in the bridge. I systematically avoid anywhere chat flags are common.
there are no less than four ideas ^^ going on there
Random question. What's everyone's favorite media player on Ubuntu?
Other than VLC
00:24
@RPiAwesomeness smplayer w
As in Banshee/Rythmbox/Clementine types
vlc is best mode activated for playing anything. amarok works well for lots of things. i use gmusic because it is the default install on xubu
@hbdgaf You use xubuntu?
@RPiAwesomeness VLC.
I figured I would get that a lot.
00:25
@RPiAwesomeness it's all i run
I tried it once and it just felt too bare bones & Windows 98 for me. Granted, that was a few years ago, but still.
If I need lightweight I use Lubuntu (what's running on my iBook G4)
see: simple is beautiful. and i like compositing
True true
I like the dark theme of xubuntu now
@Rinzwind Would you think SMPlayer is better or worse than VLC, if you had to pick one?
Next time I reinstall Ubuntu on my laptop I think I will install Lubuntu, then install Unity over the top of it.
00:29
if i could just get right click desktop root menus in xfce, i would be happier than a pig in... well you know
@hbdgaf What theme do you use on Xubuntu? I had the default theme and I didn't mess with settings at all before install Lubuntu.
i didn't reskin it at all. i changed my top bar to transparent.
nm, i have right click root menus ;)
hm, I don't like the gnome like theme
00:31
@hbdgaf That's your desktop? Looks nice :)
that's a laptop empty desktop screenie, yes
schadenfreude. it's joke.
ah
BRB. I'm changing themes to Numix. Combined with Numix Circle it looks amazing
00:37
that one is nice
I like this one theme on Ubuntu Studio
don't remember what it is, but studio uses xfce
Back
I like this
@Mateo really?
i might transition to studio then... i like the realtime kernel thing, and i already run xfce
Firefox's Australis theme fits right in
00:40
if i spent as much time programming as i spent reskinning my desktop when i was a teenager, my github would be enormous. -- message
Okay...that's weird...
jrg
jrg
@hbdgaf I heartily agree.
I plugged in my laptop to charge and the radio just went totally static
jrg
jrg
in fact, 2 years ago, I was quoted as saying As you can tell I don’t change a lot of visual things. I use Unity, but that is more because it fits my workflow (and is the default on the install, saving me time) than anything else.
00:41
kind of like this, but I move the bar to the bottom, and change the window theme - there is a nice one built in - I'll get you a screen of the studio computer I setup on tuesday if you want
jrg
jrg
wow, almost exactly 2 years ago. Dang, that was a long time ago...
Oh my. Talk about nostalgia...
@hbdgaf but yeah, bare minimal to get it how I like
@jrg time... the only thing you can't buy.
That was the first Ubuntu version I used as a valid replacement for Windows. 12.04 :D
jrg
jrg
00:43
@hbdgaf yeah, and i'm running out.
(No, I'm not terminally ill or something. Just turn 18 in a few days, and I need to get Eagle done before then. :P)
what has you twisted? i always thought of you as a good time manager.
@jrg Congradulations!
@jrg oh, secret project?
jrg
jrg
@hbdgaf it's actually not my fault. I'm waiting for other signatures.
So I can't do anything except nag people on the phone, and wait.
and then @jrg published eagleeye as foss
00:45
bleh. Time constrained project that you need people for :P
jrg
jrg
Eagle Scout, not software. :P
Can you announce in chat "The Eagle has landed" when it is done for us
jrg
jrg
Sure. :P
Project Eagle (s.) is something else that has been on hold for 3 years until I got a powerful enough compute cluster to do it. Now I have it, so it'll happen in the next few months.
@jrg it was a joke... perhaps if you told them the deadline, just told them why, they would respond most ricky-tick
jrg
jrg
@hbdgaf I have. They just said "Ok, we'll do what we can".
00:46
then they suck. still not your fault.
jrg
jrg
lol, true.
ooo... Mumbo Jumbo updated his profile pic. The stache has landed
jrg
jrg
oh, seriously? evince doesn't support PDF formulas. darn.
this is absurd. I unplug my laptop and the radio quality is just fine. Plug my laptop back in, the radio sounds like a digital Tsunami
jrg
jrg
you have a short
00:49
@RPiAwesomeness get a usb sound card thing
jrg
jrg
My laptop will try and do that if the battery gets to exactly 1% without shutting down.
herpity derpity
i had to do some serious finagling to get a formulas browser plugin to work in wine to complete my college junk
@Mateo It's not the radio on my laptop. The radio is totally separate
congratulations, welcome to my era youtube.com/watch?v=hSGNXY_CEbg
@RPiAwesomeness ah, do you have a three prong adapter handy to try?
00:53
@RPiAwesomeness I'm slightly over 30, and that still happens ;p
:P
@Mateo Actually, my cord is three prong regularly, I have a two prong adapter on it cause so many of the ports in my house are two prong
@hbdgaf this is completely the truth
nope. Didn't do anything :P
your house is old. you need a ground wire for sure...
@RPiAwesomeness yeah, a 3 to 2 that get's rid of the ground
00:54
Oh well. 5 more minutes, I have the battery life
@JourneymanGeek at least i don't feel old by myself :)
@hbdgaf Yup. This house is old and the wiring is the strangest thing ever
@RPiAwesomeness This is why everyone should switch to Her Majesty's BS 1363
The ONE TRUE POWER PLUG! THE FOOTBANE!
lol. @JourneymanGeek Are you British?
Nope
Singaporean
00:56
the one true power plug is open leads to a 220 AC run ... just saying
The brits left us with no military, and the greatest power socket in existance.
@hbdgaf: 220v is a properly manly voltage.
hm, french marrige spam?
oh brother.
it's cheaper than 110 for the same amperage here...
Not a repeat of that spam from earlier this year
00:57
@Mateo i don't get french marriage spam... i do get russian marriage spam though...
Any lower and you're a sissy, any higher and you're a loony
on the main site ;)
@JourneymanGeek that made me giggle a little...
YURI SELL YOU MAIL ORDER BRIDE! VERY CHEAP, NOT TOO VIOLENT!
00:58
(I dread the day I actually use Yuri in an RPG. The other players will either kill me, or die laughing)
@JourneymanGeek and.... that made me giggle a lot
you don't have a choice in mw3
in other news, staples offers same day business card pickup printed from online. i might need that some day...
Did you guys miss the spam? Or did I miss it here?
@Mateo @Seth <<
I flagged it
you missed it ;)
01:03
Hm, I see. Well taken care of now, so ok :)
french photographer wedding, or something, looked like some jumbled random stuff in there too
yeah pretty much.
Strange thing was, the user was 6 days old o_O
hm, why am I top 3% for the quarter?
01:10
phew
ok, I've got to try this on my next day off: raspberrypi.collabora.co.uk/maynard.html
@Mateo Ikr. I can't wait to get it on my Pi. Looks 10 googol times better than LXDE IMO
ooh, thats purdy
>_>
I've never used my raspi as a headed machine
this is the new wayland thing :)
Maynard Desktop on Wayland :D
01:16
just saw an article about it, I think I'll try it out tomorrow.

Terence EdenNOTE: This is a situation I've faced in a previous job, it doesn't relate to my current employment. I'm curious to know how people would handle this. Part of my job involves reviewing video clips which people have sent in. We review these videos before putting them on the web for our subscriber...

Q: Integrated webcam isnt working at all ubuntu 14.04 x64

Abo Jihad Bazokai've recently installed Ubuntu 14.04 LTS x64 and cheese isn't working also skype they're recognizing the camera but it shows an error on playing from it i tried solutions here , here and here and also no one worked for me i have the file /dev/video0 and i tried sudo chmod 777 /dev/video* ...

i've been searching for solution for about 2 weeks
@Danatela
@AboJihadBazoka you need to add dmesg traces showing how the kernel recognises your webcam. Add the lsusb details to identify your webcam
how to do that ?
just run dmesg and lsusb and attach the output to your question
also, I'd suggest to run ls -l /dev/video0 and look at owner and group of that device
09:18
No such file or directory
crw-rw----+ 1 root video 81, 1 Jun 16 11:29 /dev/video1
again - add that bit of information to your question
@AboJihadBazoka add your user to group video
the output of dmesg is too long
paste a link to your question - use paste.ubuntu.com

Q: Allocation of Swap in 64 bit UBUNTU 13.04

user72636I have 256GB ssd drive, 32GB DDR RAM, and 1TB HDD. What is the maximum limit of Swap memory that can be set in SSD?

09:23
i did
hmm - you've got a bigger issue - lots of virtualbox driver crashes in your log - screwed up kernel?
no
i dont have virtualbox at all
what should i do then ??
this part of the trace looks like you've got virtualbox installed ... "[ 1733.785836] Modules linked in: pci_stub vboxpci(OF) vboxnetadp(OF) vboxnetflt(OF) vboxdrv(OF) bnep rfcomm ip6t_REJECT xt_hl ip6t_rt btusb nf_conntrack_ipv6 bluetooth nf_defrag_ipv6 ipt_REJECT xt_LOG xt_limit uvcvideo xt_tcpudp xt_addrtype videobuf2_vmalloc videobuf2_memops videobuf2_core videodev nf_conntrack_ipv4 nf_defrag_ipv4 xt_conntrack ip6table_filter ip6_tables nf_conntrack_netbios_ns nvram nf_conntrack_broadcast nf_nat_ftp nf_nat nf_conntrack_ftp lib80211_crypt_tkip nf_conntrack iptable_filter ip_tables radeon
have you attempted to install virtualbox in the past - maybe installed - and then removed?
oh yes maybe it installed by mistake but i never run it
no it still installed til now
i've just discovered it
if you dont need it - purge it

/dev/video0
09:45
I added the star just in-case its video0, video1 etc
yes i know
btw it still turning from video0 to video 1
some times it video0 and other times it's video1
ok - tell me the output of ls -l /dev/video*
the output is
/dev/video0
crw-rw----+ 1 root video 81, 0 Jun 16 12:45 /dev/video0
and i added my user to the group
check cheese now
still the same
09:51
then probably a kernel bug - suggest register a kernel bug - ubuntu-bug kernel
but it was working in the few days after installing 14.04
if you havent already deleted it - boot into the original 3.13 kernel via grub (shift on reboot and select the oldest 3.13 kernel)
:/ i di d
i did*
so i have to sait to the next update or what ?
wait*
ok - wrap up everything above and add this to your question including the fact that it was working at initial install, but you've tried booting into the original 14.04 kernel
no i did not
should i ?
09:59
yes - boot into the oldest kernel - its worth a try
ok will be back
10:22
it didnt work
you should be still able to reinstall old kernel 3.13.0-24
ok - finish off with a bug report. The kernel guys will ask you to try the latest mainline kernel - so you should try that as well and add that to the bug report - askubuntu.com/questions/119080/…
ok thx alot for helping

@Rinzwind So I selected a college(which is near my house and is in the vicinity of a city centre!) and got admitted into it today! College life begins ....soon...

@fossfreedom Hi
I'm here.
14:24
What's the query to list all the emails with attachments in gmail?
@AvinashRaj nice question!(Will help people like us with a slow connection)
Have you posted this as a question somewhere in SE?
Will upvote and favorite that
i already used has : attachments query. Now it won't work for me.
Ask Mr.Kelvin(you know who I am referring to!) :-p
BTW this 'question' doesn't provide context for a llnk... I know that context for links is applicable to an answer..but is it so for questions too??
@ AvinashRaj I meant Seth.
you can even ask Mr.Redeye ...
14:32
Rinz
yeah
scary girl.
lol
okay..got some work..will be back in a jiffy'
@AvinashRaj has:attachment
Thanks i already found that. Then i have to search an attachment mail on 100 attachment mails.
14:34
Know anything else about the email?
file name of the attachment starts with pic
hmm
going to update my cv.
why? College over?
(and so OT?)

Q: Retrieve a deleted question

Adam MatanIs there a way to retrieve a deleted question I have asked? I deleted it because I had a duplicate, but after further reading I understood that's it's not really the same question, and I want mine back.

Ans: I think yes.
The only method so far to correctly detect a 32bit OS running a 64bit kernel. — Dan Garthwaite 11 mins ago
@Venki yep - nice answer. worthy of your generosity. thanks
15:04
okay thanks...about that merging(or editing)...
??
it stands by itself - no need to merge
shall i edit the question to tell about installing from minimal CD?
no - the question title makes it clear where the issue is
okay..but consider this.... lets edit the question to "How to install Ubuntu from a minimalCD?" .. then put up a block at the top of the description that tells "The answer here aims to tell how to install from a minimal CD. Though we recommend using the GUI installer this might be very useful for users that have problems with GUI installers(like the "low graphics issue" mentioned in the description below)".. Then I will delete my answer from there...
ummm - no - that will fundamentally change the nature of the question. This is specifically about the installer and getting the graphics message. Others will search on that same term.
no need to delete your answer. Leave as is.
I'm sure it will be useful to others - certainly has got alot of votes already - sure it will receive more in due course
15:12
okay, as you say! thanks for your looking into this matter...
BTW is it essential to give context for links in a question too?
context? you mean the source of the information?
yes
if you've borrowed the ideas for your answer - then yes - just a "source" at the end of the answer and a hyperlink to the source website. If the answer is majority of your own making - no need to worry. Just make sure all pictures are all yours.
Anybody with a solution for this problem?

This is my first time in the AU chat? Can I please ask a question?
Is it safe to use dpkg-repack in ubuntu? Or is it safe to reinstall the packages backed up by dpkg-repack?
@Raphael you can always ask >:) what happens next depends on the question
:'-(
@Raphael never used it before. But since all software is tested before release you can assume it is safe to use. Mind you... how you use it also matters.
@Raphael hey a mod might kick you just for fun :+)
15:40
we are a friendly bunch ... honest!
there is the 2nd evilist mod ever on au
that mouse bites :=)
nibble - mice dont bite
who is the first one?
Oli?
ah ok Rinz
@AvinashRaj there are 2 ppl above me in the all time rep >:D so you guessed correctly :)
@Raphael not a lot of software gets into Ubuntu and released that is known to have bugs :)
15:43
Oh, you're the third person.(reps)
Poll: Germany or Portugal? :=)
I think it's Germany because group stage.
@Rinzwind ok :-)
@Rinzwind i think your country won a match.

15:44
lol
sorry typo
"typi" lol

Oh what happened to my keyboard.
that stadium Holland played is looks gorgeous (it is the same GER-POR play in in a few minutes)
15:47
Please 1 more question. Is it a good practice to backup installed softwares in Ubuntu and is dpkg-repack the only method to do it?
eh
dpkg-repack is not a backup tool
"What is your favourite distro and why is it Ubuntu?"
joking
and no I never ever backup installed software myself. as long as the repos are up why should I care about the software itself?
Description-en: puts an unpacked .deb file back together
dpkg-repack creates a .deb file out of a package that has already
been installed. If any changes have been made to the package while it was
unpacked (ie, files in /etc were modified), the new package will inherit
the changes.
.
This utility can make it easy to copy packages from one computer to another,
or to recreate packages that are installed on your system, but no longer
available elsewhere, or to store the current state of a package before you
but it backs up the installed softwares in .deb format na
15:50
@Raphael no. it created a debian installer of the files on you system so you can install it with the modifications into another system. That aint a backup
ah ok sorry my bad
if you want to backup you can just copy the created cache if that is still there!?
hmm
this creates a list of the software installed:
dpkg --get-selections > ~/Desktop/packages
then backup the file "packages" and this:
cat packages > sudo dpkg --set-selections && sudo apt-get dselect upgrade
restores the software to your new sytstem
cuisine means?
its just that the internet connection at my place is limited so i have to think of different ways to save the installed softwares so that if something goes wrong while tweaking then i can go back to a better state.\
@AvinashRaj it is French and if you want the english meaning? Kitchen/cooking
15:54
yes I know some french and Rinz is right.
ma femme cuisine.
if you do say "ma cuisine femme", expect some looks.
it is used in Holland too but than it is used as "high end cooking".
(the French call that Haute Cuisine)
@fossfreedom will AU explode when we reach 1k pending reviews?
