00:28
However, I don't like it.
hm, too much bold
How is Atom Text Editor? Have you try it?
@Andrew it looks interesting to me, but i'll wait for someone who isn't me to write one "killer app" with it before i start looking at learning another toolkit
@hbdgaf I try it, to me it is junk. I like KATE the best or Greany
I like sublimetext just fine. Also, I saw an awesome vimrc the other day
00:38
What is Sublime text?
https://www.google.com/search?q=sublimetext
and the vim config
http://vimeo.com/42399125
Oh it is the Mircosoft JUNKILOD.
One of them.
it has nothing to do with microsoft... derp
They are only in it for the $$$ and not for the community
How are they in it for the money? It's absolutely free with a nag screen and almost no price-tag to remove the nag - or a trivial patch?
See my previous statement. Read it more slowly
that reminded me why I have some small icons... much better ;)
@Mateo ?
@hbdgaf still don't you get what you mean... so you use vim?
@Andrew I can use vim, but I use sublimetext from the webupd8 ppa for the cost of putting up with a nag screen until I pay for it.
00:45
One I mean Free as in Freedom, for two I mean too Free like in free items, too. IF it doesn't fit one of the two than it is not Free
@Andrew it fits 2... you're being dense. it's no FOSS, but it is free...
So it is a tral?
"Sublime Text may be downloaded and evaluated for free, however a license must be purchased for continued use."
@Andrew stop quoting the website and listen. it's not a time limited trial. it just has a nag screen. resists the urge to caps lock
Why should I paid to use a web broswer? If there is one that cost, than why should I buy a lincense to it? Same for a text editor. All Web Broswer all free about...
Oh then try ATOM
00:48
and you're on ignore
@hbdgaf why?
@Mateo good call ;)
So what is better about Sublime Text than ATOM?
mind if i shoot a business card prototype past you for feedback? i'll fire it off to the email i have at some point after i finish it.
@hbdgaf are you there?
00:53
@hbdgaf sure, I can send some pointers, maybe common pitfalls, design stuff, or just what I might like about.
mostly an "i like this, i don't like that. i might do this other bit more like this." and do you have any thoughts on using stand-out fonts versus something really vanilla? times, sans, or mono are all really common, but a font from some game or series might make the card pop - at the risk of looking unprofessional
@Mateo i also toyed with a black background with white text to make it really - "wait what?" subconsciously it just stands out for no reason.
sure there are some fonts to avoid
i'm so not using comic or anything. i just don't know where i might want to draw the line on different versus unprofessional
also, i'm paying 2.6k/yr for lot rent. thinking about seeing what it would take to get this with a contingent purchase based on seller funded perk testing and rolling the power, phone, and water hook-ups in to the loan: coldwellbanker.com/… - would be so much cheaper than what i'm doing now... of course i would be a little further from work with no pool.
usually using one from a family with it's corresponding types, and then a second completely different style to contrast (a "this is done on purpose" type of thing - where using arial with helvetica... dosn't really work)
I wasn't going to mix font types, just a more off the wall or unexpected font
01:01
o/
@Braiam o/
anyone using "Fixedsys"?
Hah - if I were developing a quarters based atari emulator for drinking establishments and wanted to hand out cards to potential buyers, i would so use that font and a space invaders themed background
yeah, brings back memories
I was also thinking a shellcode ascii art background. if you catch it, you win a discount sort of thing ;)
01:08
O_O
There is no saying that wouldn't be awesome.
@Braiam what brings back memories?
@hbdgaf make it a table top touch that is liquid proof and you could be on to something ;)
You can Glass, Plasic...
@Mateo the problem with cheap tabletop touch is it requires a projector, which means no legroom... so you don't get to do tables in drinking establishments
Great article: The Switch (not that switch)
@hbdgaf hm, yeah, remember the old projection tv's?
@Mateo yeah, but then you can only sit on one side of the table...
if you're trying to make it a table, it needs not to break table norms
it would be a "booth", so only partially better
@hbdgaf: they designed it like that because they had to put it down
01:18
OKEY! now how are you @JourneymanGeek??????
no reason you couldn't design a projection tv like \__|__/
@JourneymanGeek you think so? I think the projection beam starts at the base and comes off a mirror. at least that's how my uncle's worked...
@hbdgaf: and they use a fresnel lens to shorten the throw?
you could, but the refraction on the lens would have to be extreme and that means a higher density source and that means it costs more
damn it, makes me wish I dumpster dived the last projection TV I saw
or you get a short throw projector
maybe one of those tiny ones they have these days
01:20
SUPER short throw ;)
so we're thinking like a T for a table
and eh, I'm tempted to set up my dad's old office projector again
you can project from above but then hand's get in the way
they're doing neat things with mist and 3d projections, but that's not a projection table.
jrg
jrg
whoa, when did @JourneymanGeek get a diamond?
01:27
he has had a diamond for quite some time...
@jrg behold! he has 2! D:
SR pro-tempore and SU
jrg
jrg
has been living under a rock for almost a year
3
@jrg that would explain some things
i like living under rocks. it's totally an okay thing to do
@jrg find anything cool under there
jrg
jrg
01:30
@JorgeCastro @Oli Yeah, I really want to know when we get that box, it's real shiny.
@Mateo no. lost my sanity to a slug though.
well, at least he won't get too far with it ;)
@hbdgaf oh, how about a regular wide screen, but then do the touch sensing through cameras from the ceiling?
:O
@JourneymanGeek is no longer a dog!
He has morphed into a face.
@Mateo you could, but the IR stuff at the table level might be easier. i just don't know if you could handle the heat coming off the widescreen and still see fingertips...
ah, were there wouldn't be any ir from the projected image...
the tv might wash that out
it might
01:43
If you want to appreciate Git more, spend 5 minutes with Mercurial.
there's a reason git exists... and linus did a talk about it at google...
here, if you haven't seen it youtube.com/watch?v=4XpnKHJAok8
@NathanOsman heh, I will match you up with @FaheemMitha on UL...
@NathanOsman How does it compare with the ever bizarre bazaar?
@Seth: SU/RA joke ;p
I know ;P
02:00
@hbdgaf that was the talk that sealed the path for git in code.G
@Seth It's probably more similar to Bazaar than Git.
Git offers nearly no overhead on branching. And apparently you can't delete a branch in Mercurial.
Interesting.
Thanks ;)
02:38
Can I ask a frustrating question about permissions here (and expect an answer lol)? Not sure the protocol of the chat
yep go for it.
Doesn't always mean someone can/will answer it, but it is always worth a try.
thanks.
@NathanOsman what exactly the reason you prefer git?
I have a service (plex) that has a user (plex) and group (plex). I have media that is owned by my own user (me) and group (family). The client can access but can't delete media (permission error). I added user "plex" to group "family" but it didn't help. Files are all 775. If I change to 777 it works. If I change file ownership to "plex" then it works of course.
question: why didn't adding user"plex" to group "family" resolve the problem?
my thinking is that permission have group access as wide open (7) and plex is part of the group the files belong to.
@Danatela It more closely fits the ideal developer workflow.
02:48
@Danatela what is exactly the reason you don't prefer git?
bare the learning curve it can pose for someones
@bcsteeve because you didn't restart your system
@Braiam I know SVN and Mercurial; I thought Git is just Mercurial clone
Certainly not. Git is absolutely nothing like Mercurial.
@Danatela if Linus hears you he would kill you.... the nearest thing to git is BitKeeper which he took more of the concept and mercurial predates git several days youtube.com/watch?v=4XpnKHJAok8
haha I just heard he doesn't like VCS
or CVS
Its nice to be able to make a bunch of branches to mess around and not have to deal with pruning the repo
I think the biggest takeaway from his talk is that it increases colaboration because it allows for non-judgemental experimentation
and can make commits to large OSS projects more democratic
thanks anyway
flightradar24.com <--- really really neat.
03:27
@NathanOsman I wonder why those planes don't crash in US D:
Remember they are at different altitudes.
OMG how many
03:42
I'll just leave this here:
:)
We already saw it :P
I'm a vim guy myself.
@Seth Lol.
Real programmers use nano anyway :P
Braiam called me a heretic ;P
@NathanOsman lol
@AvinashRaj Audit man, reject.
There isn't even a link ;)
now only i know that it's an audit.
impressed by the comment.
03:51
Now here's something to make a developer cringe. Comic Sans in Sublime:
I just want to scream.
@NathanOsman btw, what implementation of JS is that?
Doesn't look like Vanilla JS nor jQuery.
No idea - I just picked that up from the article with the vim/emacs joke.
oh ok
The entire article is quite funny.
linkie?
"We’ve all been there. Facebook did it, Google did it, Yahoo’s doing it. " <-- hilarious
WHo is going to bye me my...
ok, laughing already. Thanks @Nathan :D
@Seth thanks you...
@NathanOsman as far I can see now Git allows to edit history, but "forgets" some changesets after month
04:01
@Andrew I remember reading about that about 10 years ago in Popular Science.
Do they finally have a working prototype? :)
Yea...
@NathanOsman although I wouldn't want to use it as a real keyboard...
I like to type thought the touch methoh...
I remember seeing it every year as a new iPhone feature.. Of course, Samsung would have to get it first before I believe it.
Yea, it is only good if you need a keyboard on the go... and not have a proper surface to put one on...
I would only use that if:
1.) I didn't have a physical keyboard
2.) My phone's keyboard was too small
3.) I couldn't use voice input due to noise problems
4.) Somebody made me use it :P
@NathanOsman Same...
I need a physical keyboard keyboard. I need to key what I am typing, and not if the home row by a few or one key right,...

Q: How to take back my bounty?

begueradjIn the case you set a bounty for your question and gave it to someone but after trying the accepted answer it did not work: how could you take back the bounty and let the question open again for a useful answer ?

@raaz I need your help
06:10
@Danatela Hello. Please take a look at this answer about config settings.
@karel are you trying to answer my last question or replying to some of my answers? I can't figure it out %)
@Danatela It's the Wikipedia quote in your suggested configure tag wiki edit. I don't think that it's sufficiently specific to Ubuntu.
ah that... I just thought it was improperly used so added the explanation
BTW I thought configure behavior shouldn't be specific for any OS
06:28
@karel There are .conf files, config files, rc files, configuration files used for compiling applications, etc. and the Wikipedia quote says "configuration" and stops there, which might result in a user searching for a file named "configuration" which does not exist.
A Configure script is an executable script designed to aid in developing a program to be run on a wide number of different computers. It matches the libraries on the user's computer, with those required by the program, just before compiling it from its source code.

As a common practice, all configure scripts are named "configure". Usually, configure scripts are written for the Bourne shell, but they may be written for execution in any desired shell.
just don't see where is "configuration"
@Danatela That's the tag. Sorry, I meant named "configure". As a common practice, all scripts are named "configure". This sentence should be removed or else expanded to prevent misleading the user.
If anyone helps it would be great !!
@SulthanAllaudeen reinstall

@Parto Why?
@Parto @fossfreedom has closed one of them while you wrote that... I'll let him decide what's what.
@Oli The first question was for some software center issues after he used a vlc ppa which I helped fix. But then came the 'unmet dependencies' issue on trying to install vlc again. I believe the previous info is important to solve this new issue.

@Danatela please don't plagiarize content for tag wikis. You can't just copy from wikipedia like that.
Especially since in this case, Wikipedia is wrong! The configure script does not compile anything!
@terdon OK. Should I edit this wiki?
@Danatela I just did.
Just in general never copy/paste content into a tag wiki.
@terdon "Just in general never copy/paste content"
True.
create your own answer. And if you do copy copy snippets with source reference and not whole text
mind you: sometimes copy/paste with reference might be the best method :D

@AvinashRaj use it?
file ->new->project
then?
you want it local or remote? :=_
14:23
pity >:D I use it only for remote >:D
What's the difference between these two?
sorry i don't know.
remote means the files are on a server
local means the files are on the system you have aptana installed
then i want local. Now, i'm learning it.
"You could use Aptana Studio 3 Remote view to create a new empty project, then create a FTP connection to your local server and download all the files. To enable auto-upload on local changes, in Project Explorer or App Explorer in context menu select Deploy/Deployment Settings, then check "Automatically sync my changes with the remote site".

If you're working on the same machine as your local server, you could just use the server project location directly in Aptana Studio. To accomplish that, use Project Explorer to find the project location on Local Filesystem. Then "Promote To Project"."
so you need the last sentence ;-)
i tried this "To accomplish that, use Project Explorer to find the project location on Local Filesystem. Then "Promote To Project".""
But it open .php files in gedit.

@bcsteeve I think plex expects the media to be owned by "plex" in order to interact with it, let me check
