@ankesh You start from a Live USB or DVD, and copy the file you need from there to your hard disk. It might just work, but it's only a thing to try and is equally likely to not help or even hurt...
@Danatela, It seems that it does start a process & it takes me to tty7 (if that's what it is called) & shows some messages there.. Not really sure what to make out of them

@Danatela Did you try EaseUS in wine? Then we can give instructions for that too there in your answer and thus give instructions for increasing persistence in an Ubuntu install itself....

@AvinashRaj 12th results are on may 9th. BTW I tried setting up ubuntu for a friend yesterday. He tried with a liveUSB session from a 4GB pendrive and ubuntu was slow on his PC ..any idea why?

What is a good partitioning tool for Ubuntu 10.X as an alternative to GPARTED?
I haven't been able to find one that is easy to use.
A commercial product is OK if necessary for ease of use.
Now I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.
I suggest you press shift key with clicking.
I think that it's very easy, and It's a function of Unity.

@AvinashRaj Hey, back again i see! So wanna partition a pendrive(cant do it with Gparted)... have a fat32 partition in it.. wanna resize that and want to create an ext4 from from the free spzce I get.. trying to use fdisk... help?

@AvinashRaj Ah not just that!! You should have used that USB to make a live USb of 14.04 LTS.. then delete casper -rw from it... then try to do the partitioning "thing"..

Your target USB disk must have at least two partitions; I recommend using Gparted to create a new partition table.
The first partition must be vfat/FAT32, minimum size 750 MB (or more if you are using a LiveDVD ...
I will explain clearly... 1. Create a live USB 2. Delete casper-rw 3. Open Gparted and resize the FAT32 partition 4. In the unallocated space create a new ext4 partition named casper-rw ... we tried exactly this and GParted crashed .... Checking out izx answer now..
@Danatela Also all answerrs tell me to make 100 mb or so persistence i.e casper-rw first while creating the liveUSB but in the startup-disk-creator with my 4GB pendrive i cant make it lower than 1GB!!
@AvinashRaj Its actully not a folder some kinda file.... After you create the LIVE USB just go into your pendrive and type casper -rw ...after creating the live USB if there is no casper-rw then no problem.. just continue the partitioning work we did(and enjoy crashing GParted ! :-p )
Hi all - coming from the sheltered life as a Windows user, I'm wondering why mapping network shares in Ubuntu is so roundabout? I can share a folder on an Ubuntu machine, but it creates a Samba share (isn't that mostly for the benefit of Windows?). I can view that share from another Ubuntu machine but it's not an actual path in the local file tree (I thought everything was). I can't dead-easy just map a found share onto something. Do I really need to type stuff on the console for that? See:

i have a 2GB persistence as a separate partition in a 4GB pendrive which I am using as liveUSb... now i am on my actual Ubuntu install and I want a s/w in this to be used in the livesession(a graphic driver installer actually).. now I tried to copy paste that installer into that persistence partition but I cant..any idea how to do it?

@terdon It's not entirely clear whether what they're doing is really the right idea. Running Wine as root makes me want to suggest that it's automatically the worst idea that's ever dragged itself into this world... But who knows, there might be a good reason for it.
@Oli True. I'm still wondering why a program running in wine would ever need the root password. Root access perhaps, but the password? What in the world would it do with it? Wine doesn't communicate with the running Linux session does it?
