When I make a trendline in LibreOffice it does not graph it.
Although it says that the line exists.

02:02
hi.. Can someone please help me with this? askubuntu.com/questions/456626/…
02:17
Why are people so concerned about the IE use-after-free when mozilla gets them quite frequently? is it simply more serious?
02:33
Hi everybody
Trying my luck again.. Can someone please help me with this - http://askubuntu.com/questions/456626/ubuntu-12-04-keeps-booting-to-tty1 ?
I've been stuck with this for almost a day now
@ankesh I was going to suggest copying it from a Live session but my VM isn't working so I couldn't test it
@Richard, could you pls elaborate.. I'm fairly new to unix
@ankesh You start from a Live USB or DVD, and copy the file you need from there to your hard disk. It might just work, but it's only a thing to try and is equally likely to not help or even hurt...
okay.. which files do you suggest I should copy? I've already tried reinstalling X & Ubuntu-desktop
02:47
@ankesh The .Xauthority file in the home folder. Press Ctrl + H in the file manager to see hidden files.
okay.. I'll try doing that. Thanks @Richard
@ankesh and what if you run sudo start lightdm?
@Danatela, It seems that it does start a process & it takes me to tty7 (if that's what it is called) & shows some messages there.. Not really sure what to make out of them
03:12
you can see those messages in /var/log/Xorg.0.log
or bring it here
@Venki good morning!
Hey!
@Danatela Any luck with that persistence issue?
I repartitioned flash in Windows through EaseUS Partition Manager
then Gparted worked with it and created ext4 partition
Oh! I didn't try that! Posted the answer? Will upvote it..
where?
It seems you didn't ...
Post it and will upvote it(or edit and then upvote!)
03:18
:) why did you delete your comment? It was useful...
No it wasn't I suppose! Gparted sucked!
Installing KDE...
@NathanOsman All the best!
:-D
I hope so... :)
So far so good.
@NathanOsman BTW not much activity in 2buntu hey?
03:27
Do you mean the blog or the code for the blog?
The blog... I aint much of a coder guy.. yet!! Been a week since last article...
@Venki I posted the answer
@Danatela Reading it..
Good one..BTW couldn't understand this... what does it actually do? mke2fs -t extX /path/to/casper-rw
@Danatela
@Danatela Did you try EaseUS in wine? Then we can give instructions for that too there in your answer and thus give instructions for increasing persistence in an Ubuntu install itself....
I didn't try it in Wine. Hope it works there, but not sure
and mke2fs creates ext2/3/4 filesystem in the file specified
Ok.. I will try that when I am free.. a good issue to tinker with... BTW you know how to set up remote desktop configuration between ubuntu and a windows 8 rt OS? My friend wants to know that...
@Danatela
@AvinashRaj Hi 'na! been a long time!!
03:36
Hi thambi :-)
long time, nope.
when will be the 12th results are going to publish?
@Venki does he want to connect to Windows or to Ubuntu?
@AvinashRaj 12th results are on may 9th. BTW I tried setting up ubuntu for a friend yesterday. He tried with a liveUSB session from a 4GB pendrive and ubuntu was slow on his PC ..any idea why?
@Danatela Actually access Ubuntu from his Microsoft surface which has a windows 8 rt ...
Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
What's the RAM size?
8GB
and video?
03:39
@Danatela Cant get you . Can u come again?
8GB then why it's so slow.
what videocard does your friend have?
did you install Ubuntu on the HDD?
@AvinashRaj :-P no i didnt.. but Ubuntu runs well in my 500GB HDD PC with 4GB ram
I'd suggest to try 13.10 on his computer
03:41
@Danatela Dunno exactly but some AMD Radeon 7770HD ... BTW why 13.10?
14.04 is slow on my workstation with NVidia 6150
@Danatela So graphic card affects system speed... but Windows runs fine on his PC!!!
haha Windows has less problems with modern hardware, no doubt
@Danatela :-p he was able to remotely access a Windows 7 on his PC from his Surface .... But i dunno how to set up Remote access for ubuntu...
my live USB even does not show desktop with default drivers :(
03:45
:-p
So installing in HDD might do good right?
to access Ubuntu through the console, you need PuTTY
@Venki Yep
surface or surface RT?
@AvinashRaj Ok
@JourneymanGeek The latter
Hi BTW!
@JourneymanGeek Are u run for SU mod election? Why u fail to inform me?
i already throw my vote for u :-)
03:47
putty dosen't have an RT port
@AvinashRaj: yeah, I'm running ;p
@Venki: see if you can find a good ssh client for metro/winrt
@AvinashRaj I am writing entrance exams.. and it is driving me crazy!!
@Venki entrance exams?? why??
@JourneymanGeek I really have no idea about what you are telling me!!! Can you gimme any doc. linky like yesterday?
@AvinashRaj To get into a good college.. I didn't do 12th board well too :-p
lol. Why?
@Danatela there?
03:50
@Venki: lol, I have no idea - why not do some research/testing?
@AvinashRaj Dunno! But reading for 12th board was irritating!
ugh, my spare case cracked when I brought it down
@JourneymanGeek Ok.. will get back to you if I get any doubts.... again!! So hard being a newbie you know! :-(
@Venki: Learning to do research yourself is the single most important skill you will learn, ever
5
03:52
@Danatela Darn! Then have to find some way to make things work in Ubuntu.. i will find it out and post an answer and inform you...
@JourneymanGeek Hmmm....
@AvinashRaj But reading for entrance exams is interesting.. but kind a drives you crazy!! When I get crazy i come to AU for refreshment!!:-P
lol
@JourneymanGeek you will get a diamond very soon.
I already have one ;p
400+ votes
yep, on SR.
You mean for one question ??!!! 400 votes!!! 400+ votes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
argh! not enough rep to vote on SU
@AvinashRaj Election ah!! i am not 18 yet!! :-P Just kidding :-P
But I am not in SU
this election is irrespective of age.
But respective of if you are in SU..right?
irrespective in any SE site, I suppose
though you need 150 rep to upvote a candidate
You need 300 reputation to nominate yourself, and if you have no activity (or almost no activity) on SU the chance of getting yourself elected is cough nill cough
03:58
yep, @Danatela
Hmm.. So i can vote.... but I dont want to now.. coz i aint in SU ...
Wouldnt be right to do so...
But if i was in SU and I would have voted then definitely for @JourneymanGeek
:-D
@JourneymanGeek you are the leader :)
Seems i have to leave.. So Ciao teill next time!! @JourneymanGeek @Danatela @AvinashRaj

what does sudo modprobe nvidia say?
nothing (accessing through ssh)
Or should I try restarting the machine physically & then giving this command?
now I need your dmesg | tail

I thought it can't load kernel module
If it helps, I did
startx -- /usr/bin/Xdmx :1 +xinerama -display :0.0 -display localhost:10.0 -norender -noglxproxy
besides messing with Xauthority before it went down
try sudo start lightdm without xorg.conf
it should drop you to the opensource driver

@JourneymanGeek or @Braiam around?

Is it ok to (hard) restart my system? coz it's still stuck on the blank screen with cursor
it is OK, but it will not help
try removing nvidia drivers
then reboot
Tried sudo start lightdm without xorg.conf.. It takes me to tty7
removed nvidia drivers.. Is it advisable to install ubuntu-desktop before restarting?
@Danatela
yes if not installed
BINGO! Got the GUI back!

Anyone here know an alternative to Gparted for ubuntu?
9
Q: What GPARTED alternatives are available?

Michael DurrantWhat is a good partitioning tool for Ubuntu 10.X as an alternative to GPARTED? I haven't been able to find one that is easy to use. A commercial product is OK if necessary for ease of use.

not a lot :-/
yeah i saw that ...
In future will try to create one!! :-p
I suggest you to use C#, it is very cool language though it came from Microsoft ;)
hmmm... will trying learning that sometime .... At present I am trying my hand at JAVA though i am not completely into it as i have some exams now...
and am busy reading for that...
:-(
06:25
Hi

A: Clicking on nautilus opens new window rather than opened ones

xiaodongjieNow I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I suggest you press shift key with clicking. I think that it's very easy, and It's a function of Unity. You can see the additional information at What are Unity's keyboard and mouse shortcuts?.

@Danatela I am thinking of trying with GParted liveCD. I haven't deleted casper-rw this time though ...
@Danatela No I am not trying that... reading the man page of fdisk !!!
Hope i don't toast my pendrive!! :-p
@Rinzwind How are you?
@Rinzwind Any experience partitioning with fdisk?
@Venki I have too.
Then how to do it?
06:40
@Venki
fdisk -l(list all partitions of all HDDs)
Did you know about it?
sudo fdisk /dev/sda
I am trying to resize a partition in my pen drive ... tried sudo fdisk -u /dev/sdb ... this doesn't seem to have any options to resize a partition...
@Venki oh, fdisk does not support for resize, you should recreate a partition with new size.
Hmmm.. thats bad...
coz I dont have free space.. I want to resize my partition and create a new one ...
@Venki
you resize the partition as smaller than now?
I want to do that...
06:47
first, you
tell me your filesystem.
It's ext2/3?
or fat32?
fat32
want to create an ext4 partition
oh, fat32 filesystem resize tool is?
it's not related with fdisk.
@AvinashRaj Hey, back again i see! So wanna partition a pendrive(cant do it with Gparted)... have a fat32 partition in it.. wanna resize that and want to create an ext4 from from the free spzce I get.. trying to use fdisk... help?
@xiaodongjie where can I find that- fat32 filesystem resize tool?
fdisk? no
post the gparted screenshot of your flash drive.
06:52
@AvinashRaj
uhhh.. actually i tried partitioning with gparted(@Danatela also tried).. we both saw that gparted just crashed ! Actually I am doing all this to answer this question : askubuntu.com/questions/291696/…
@AvinashRaj
uhhh.. actually i tried partitioning with gparted(@Danatela also tried).. we both saw that gparted just crashed ! Actually I am doing all this to answer this question : askubuntu.com/questions/291696/…
@xiaodongjie Thanks ! so I will resize my fat32 with fatresize then create a new partition with fdisk..
@Venki oh,
and I used EaseUS on Windows to complete resizing
yeah
ok, let me try.
first you try resize, and next try fdisk.
06:54
i have to cretae two partitions on my flashdrive.
one as fat32
and another one as ext4
am i correct?
first you need to create live flash
@AvinashRaj Ah not just that!! You should have used that USB to make a live USb of 14.04 LTS.. then delete casper -rw from it... then try to do the partitioning "thing"..
@Venki remember that fdisk is only management partition table, but filesystem.
@Danatela @AvinashRaj It's right?
@Venki ok i will follow this.
@Venki and once you have FAT32 partition resized, you will be able to use gparted on it
06:56
@Danatela izx posted already posted an answer like yours.
@Danatela Oh! nice.. so problem with Gparted is resizing FAt32 on the pendrive..not creating the new partition ...
@AvinashRaj I didn't see it
@AvinashRaj where is the izx post?
reading it...
Actually we followed all that the first link (askubuntu.com/questions/397481/…) tells but when we press "Apply all operations") GParted crashes ....
@AvinashRaj
Now reading 2nd link ...\
Now I'm shuting down with "halt -p"!!!!
bye!
@Venki you mean i have del casper folder.
@AvinashRaj no, casper-rw file
no, i didn't have casper-rw file.
avinash@avinash-Lenovo-IdeaPad-Z500:/media/avinash/1587-BAF0$ ls
autorun.inf  EFI          md5sum.txt  preseed             ubninit
boot         install      menu.c32    README.diskdefines  ubnkern
casper       isolinux     pics        syslinux.cfg        ubnpathl.txt
dists        ldlinux.sys  pool        ubnfilel.txt        wubi.exe
07:11
@AvinashRaj Ya.. create a liveUSB.. delete casper.-rw... wait.. see the doc here ....
This is exactly what your first linky says..
what can i do now?
And finally i got the izx's answer.
9
A: How do I get a live-USB to use a partition for persistence?

izxThis is very easy to do, although the "casper-rw" name will still show up once :) Your target USB disk must have at least two partitions; I recommend using Gparted to create a new partition table. The first partition must be vfat/FAT32, minimum size 750 MB (or more if you are using a LiveDVD ...

I will explain clearly... 1. Create a live USB 2. Delete casper-rw 3. Open Gparted and resize the FAT32 partition 4. In the unallocated space create a new ext4 partition named casper-rw ... we tried exactly this and GParted crashed .... Checking out izx answer now..
i created a live usb. But i didn't have any casper-rw folder or file.
You would have selected "Discard changes on every startup" in startup disk creator... its ok... now try the next steps I mentioned with GParted..
in the one of mentioned answers it is said that you need to add persistence word to startup options
07:22
@Danatela Also all answerrs tell me to make 100 mb or so persistence i.e casper-rw first while creating the liveUSB but in the startup-disk-creator with my 4GB pendrive i cant make it lower than 1GB!!
after deleting the caper folder, the used space is reduced to 50 mb.
haha now start over. You killed the liveUSB
CASPER FOLDER illa just casper -rw !!!!
@AvinashRaj
thambi casper -rw apdingra foldera illa pa.
12 mins ago, by Avinash Raj
avinash@avinash-Lenovo-IdeaPad-Z500:/media/avinash/1587-BAF0$ ls
autorun.inf  EFI          md5sum.txt  preseed             ubninit
boot         install      menu.c32    README.diskdefines  ubnkern
casper       isolinux     pics        syslinux.cfg        ubnpathl.txt
dists        ldlinux.sys  pool        ubnfilel.txt        wubi.exe
@AvinashRaj Its actully not a folder some kinda file.... After you create the LIVE USB just go into your pendrive and type casper -rw ...after creating the live USB if there is no casper-rw then no problem.. just continue the partitioning work we did(and enjoy crashing GParted ! :-p )
DONT DELETE CASPER FOLDER!!!
07:29
good morning all :)
AFternoon ! @Rinzwind
1:00 pm here..
according to the izx post, you have to create 2 partitions fat32 and ext4 before creating the live disk.
Really?? will check it again ...
@Venki yep.
And how is this askubuntu.com/questions/457519/… related to Ubuntu.
@AvinashRaj Hmm.. will try that and get back...
07:33
k
BTW this error in fatresize ...
sudo fatresize -p -s 980M /dev/sdb1
fatresize 1.0.2 (05/26/10)
.Error: Unable to satisfy all constraints on the partition.
@AvinashRaj
Just leave it .. I am going to try izx answer..
@Venki leave 1 Mb empty space before the partition
By resizing?
is something about the boundaries not detected correctly. adding an empty 1 Mb in front of the partition "solves" it
Hmmm.. trying it..
GPARTED CRASHESSSSSSSSSS !!!!!!!!! UHHHHH!!!!!!! >:-E
@Rinzwind
@AvinashRaj I am doing this..now going to press Apply operations.. GOD HELP ME!!
07:49
apply.
Oli
Oli
@Venki @Rinzwind said 1MB not 1GB/
If that's what that is... If it's not, ignore me.
@OLI no that is his fat32 partition :+)
@AvinashRaj I pressed apply Gparted crashed and ...
this is what appears now...
@Venki so google the error :+)
@Rinzwind Google about "why izx's answer here askubuntu.com/questions/138356/… is not working ??!! :-p
07:53
(that 1Mb is also applied to dual boot systems where it divides ntfs and ext btw
BTW I tried applying that 1MB and even then GParted crashed!! What the hell happened to this wonderful s/w !!
Well... i have a live CD and will try from that one now..
Will be back in a jiffy after trying with liveCD(Hope it works!!) :-o
I would use a live gparted cd :P
08:08
@Rinzwind Well the "live GParted CD" worked fine! ... now creating startup disk in the FAT32 partition...
And it is GParted not "gparted" :-)
@Venki told you before to use the live gparted cd >:-DDD
:-D :-D LOL ROFL
>:D I can go on if you want? >:-D
No need guv'nor!
good :-D
08:15
@Danatela doing the txt.cfg thing from your answer...
@flownez: Thanks for the edit, was sleepy I suppose when I wrote that answer ;)
Oli
Oli
@Rinzwind Yeah that's all dead now.
as expected :+)
08:34
Hi all - coming from the sheltered life as a Windows user, I'm wondering why mapping network shares in Ubuntu is so roundabout? I can share a folder on an Ubuntu machine, but it creates a Samba share (isn't that mostly for the benefit of Windows?). I can view that share from another Ubuntu machine but it's not an actual path in the local file tree (I thought everything was). I can't dead-easy just map a found share onto something. Do I really need to type stuff on the console for that? See:
1
Q: how to map an Ubuntu share on another Ubuntu machine?

Torben Gundtofte-BruunI've found questions on mapping a Windows share in Ubuntu, and an Ubuntu Server share on Windows, and Samba, and NTFS, and VirtualBox -- but I can't find how to map an Ubuntu share on another Ubuntu machine...! I'm running 2 PC's at home, both plain-vanilla Ubuntu 14.04. On both, some folders h...

Once I found the share I want in the "Browse network", why can't I simply right-click and get a dialog to map it somewhere, similar to Windows?
Note that I refer to two Ubuntu (14.04) machines, not Windows.

Q: Installing both Ubuntu and Fedora with same /home

ScimonsterI already read this thread, so please don't mark me as a duplicate of it. That asks how. I want to know how safe it is. I currently have Fedora 20 with GNOME 3.8. I've already messed up its configuration to the point of being unable to log in graphically, but that's not this question. I want to ...

@Rinzwind @AvinashRaj @Danatela Works!! I created the partitions with "live GParted CD" and then made live USB. Then I did what danatela's answer here askubuntu.com/questions/291696/… tells about txt.cfg and Now I have 2 GB persistence when I started the live USB session!! Thanks to you all!
Going to post the answer for Ubuntu in this link... askubuntu.com/questions/291696/…
Well, but the question there asks how to do it AFTER making the live USB so not gonna post the answer!!
Instead i just improved izx's answer here: askubuntu.com/questions/138356/… !!
@terdon need some help here..
09:07
@Venki What's up?
i have a 2GB persistence as a separate partition in a 4GB pendrive which I am using as liveUSb... now i am on my actual Ubuntu install and I want a s/w in this to be used in the livesession(a graphic driver installer actually).. now I tried to copy paste that installer into that persistence partition but I cant..any idea how to do it?
@terdon
@Venki Never used a pesistant usb install but what error do you get when you copy?
No error and all .. there is just not an option to paste..!
@terdon
you have to run Nautilus in root mode
@Venki ^^^ Your normal user probably doesn't have write access to the partition.
Or use sudo cp
09:16
yeah, wait I tried from terminal and this is what happened ...
venki@Venkat:~$ sudo cp ~/Documents/Software/"AMD new" /media/venki/casper-rw
cp: omitting directory ‘/home/venki/Documents/Software/AMD new’
cp -r
whY ?
it will recursively copy directories
ok will try..
cp won't copy directories unless you use the -r
09:19
Yeah it worked! Thanks.. now I can go to my livesession and install that driver I suppose.. If i couldn't ..then persistence aint working! So will try that and get back to you guys in a jiffy..
you may take 10 jiffies :=)
Does anyone understand what the OP is asking here?

Q: Allow user to run programs as root without password. Would it be the correct solution to my problem?

Alberto MartínI have a server which I need to be running certain programs permanently; I'm having problems with two of them and I'm not sure if the solution I've found would be the correct one, so I ask for opinion to users with more experience on this issues. AFTER 20 jiffies :-p I am back .. with good and bad news... actually the file i put in the persistence partition was there in the live USB session... but i feel persistence isn't ACTUALLY working.. because I logged in this time like I am logging in for the first time!! It seems it hadn't saved my setting from my last log in!!
@terdon @Danatela @Rinzwind
@AvinashRaj
09:41
@terdon i will discard the questions which has long passages.
@terdon no and I have this inkling he is doing it all wrong D:

@Oli I guess so, yes. But then there's a wine command and an FTP server coming in somehow.

@terdon the ftp fine. not a problem. the wine part I do not get
back soon :)
and Venki... no need to pm me each time :D I read the chat as it comes in mosttimes :)
@Rinzwind It's the wine FTP I don't get. He seems to have two FTP thangs going, one to get an IP (god know how) and another through wine.
kkk...
BTW getting back to my issue why isn't persisrtence partition not storing my settings but just the files I put in it(as any partition would do) ? @AvinashRaj

@terdon It's not entirely clear whether what they're doing is really the right idea. Running Wine as root makes me want to suggest that it's automatically the worst idea that's ever dragged itself into this world... But who knows, there might be a good reason for it.
@Oli True. I'm still wondering why a program running in wine would ever need the root password. Root access perhaps, but the password? What in the world would it do with it? Wine doesn't communicate with the running Linux session does it?
@AvinashRaj No nO no it is storing.. sorry some misunderstanding there!!!

@terdon Not at any permission/auth level that I've seen
Oh well, we'll see if the OP clarifies.
