yes, how could you
Hey, how are you!
Nice to see you around :)
And your dog, right.
woof?
I have a dog?
;p
Yeah, its the rare spottiswoode terrier.
wow, that is impressive. Only you can spell that race :)
(he's a mutt. We have no idea what he is ;p)
01:07
lol
Pretty sure you love it no matter the race
XD. I'm sort of his pet human
and yeah, he's a lovely dog
that's true. Everyone of us, that have a dog, are pet humans
(and every single SE ava I have used has been pictures of him ;p. Granted, he's ridiculously photogenic when you actually manage to take a photo of him)
@JourneymanGeek Dude, that is a cute dog :) Love it
@Lucio: mini schnauzers seem to have favourites ;p
and in his case he's convinced I'm the human pup they adopted right after we adopted him to keep him company
01:10
Sorry, too many hi* for me to understand that phrase.
Did you mean that you have another dog?
Whoa.. I'm lost too.
Anyone here know of any good sub-50 headphones?
@RPiAwesomeness anything but beats... is the thing I always hear
lol, Beats are absurdly over-priced and over-hyped
OMW someone with sense!
Sony makes some good ones for an ok price.
01:18
Yayz all around :D
@Seth Yeah, I'm looking at this one:
Yeah have some similar ones, they're pretty good.
eek, white headphones.
dunno whether to go first option or second
@Seth Lol, dunno if I'll get white, though black are kinda ugly
Oh, RPi is @RPiAwesomeness! Sweet :D
Hi @RPiAwesomeness!

I'm angry.
@Lucio Why?
BTW, yes. I am RPi

A restaurant in the Caribbean.
@RPiAwesomeness very true
Mofongo () is a fried plantain-based dish from Puerto Rico. It is typically made with fried green plantains mashed together in a pilón (which is a wooden mortar and pestle), with broth, garlic, olive oil, and pork cracklings or bits of bacon. It is often filled with vegetables, chicken, crab, shrimp, or beef and is often served with fried meat and chicken broth soup. Mofongo relleno is mofongo served with stewed meat or seafood poured over it. Origins Mofongo is an Afro-Puerto Rican dish that has clear roots in west African Fufu. I guess it's that too.
@Seth connected to AU from a restaurant? Sorry, but that is sad.
@Lucio Apparently not --^

hello @lucio et al :)
This is what I call, exceptions handling :D
I like to upgrade ubuntu only for the wallpapers.
2
01:44
@Lucio Hey, 14.04 had a lot more cool stuff that wallpapers, though, those were good :)
@RPiAwesomeness Yeah, but I also just can't wait to see the new wallpapers...
@Lucio you can just download the package and drop a "new theme"
on the third hand, I'm compiling mplayer from source to debug...
I hate debug my own applications, imagine third party..
OMG! QC COMIC INCLUDING LINUX!!!!
@Lucio You must love debugging. Use self-hypnosis if necessary. Also, get up and walk away for a few minutes. I can't count the number of times I stared at a screen for 2 hours, then saw the problem the second I came back from a break.
01:49
very nice advice, indeed
A second programmer is the best (without doubts) for debugging.
@Lucio Also good, yes.
But most of the times it's not possible :(
hey guys, now I'm building mesa :D
that is an intel driver, right?
02:04
no...
that's where you put the plates to eat dinner ¬_¬
xD
xD that's awesome
Gosh, we are screwed:
02:24
I used Ubuntu1 to make auto backups of things on home folder.
Now, without Ubuntu1, have someone found another similar/useful tool?
02:45
I use bitorrentsync
03:00
oh, I hear about that
@JourneymanGeek How can I set it up?
@Lucio: there's a deb, you install it it, go to the config page, and set a location and a secret key. Then you copy the secret key on the other system
ssh
@JourneymanGeek I mean, is it only for private networks? VPN, lan..
03:15
no, works anywhere
oh, but I need another computer
and that is what I'm lacking :(
I need a web service for this. Maybe google drive do it

be careful though, grive is very confusing.
I thought that writing that question was going to be closed as dupe of this one :P
@Oli you ought to check this out meta.stackoverflow.com/q/252327/792066
I'm running copy but didn't knew they have a backup system. I will try it and tell you about it!
03:30
@Braiam yeah, he definitely should. His wizard looks way better.
(Oli's that is)
Although this guy's might be better for bigger sites.
@Lucio Cool!
@Seth Oli's approach is "well, you have a problem, we expect you to give us X info"; that guy is "well, as you have written your question is likely to be closed, try to improve it"
mm.
03:52
"that was the straw that broke the camel"
is it well said?
I want to express something like: "this was the end point"

I'm going to sleep.
See you in a couple of days..

Hi
everybody
06:24
@xiaodongjie Hi
I have a question about askubuntu. In askubuntu we are allowed to ask questions of Ubuntu. But is there any way that we can ask questions about Ubuntu based custom distros? We have made a custom distro called Oikyo Linux, which is based on Ubuntu. So is there any way that we can connect Oikyo Linux with askubuntu.com ?
@PavakPaul those need to to go unix.stackexchange.com
if you want support through askubuntu you need to apply for your operating system to become official
2
06:46
@Rinzwind But is there any way to contact them and request? because basically Oikyo Linux is Ubuntu.
07:01
@PavakPaul if you did not patch sources, your distro can be treaten as Ubuntu. And it is unlikely that distro without *buntu in title will become official.
@Danatela , no I didn't messed with the source. It's a palin Ubuntu OS, having customizations and apps preinstalled. and comes with some other features. So in the core, it's the same Ubuntu.
ok
and this is the list askubuntu supports: ubuntu.com/about/about-ubuntu/derivatives
it would become very messy if askubuntu would support all the operating systems on the 1st link
07:18
Excuse me people! Does usb-modeswitch have anything to do with a USB keyboard?
And BTW, my friend wants me to set up ubuntu for him...but he wants to check out how ubuntu works first and then install it...So shall I dual boot ubuntu for him alongside windows or use a virtual machine?
@Rinzwind help ^ ?
@Venki: why not just use a liveusb?
you could even have persistance
How to do that? Any answer in AU that could guide me?
@JourneymanGeek
@Venki: I'd use unetbootin
it would do most of the work, assuming the USB is prepared correctly and can boot at all
Oli
Oli
@Venki I could be wrong but I think I've used usb-modeswitch to switch a 3G dongle from a mass storage device (it has a microsd reader) into a modem. (Edit, yup, seems to be the case)
@Venki no
07:29
@JourneymanGeek Fine Any AU answer or ubuntu doc. on how to do that?
usb-modeswitch is for switching usb modes and keyboards do not have that :+)
and its something worth learning, since its a nice way to get install media set up too
@Oli Right @Rinzwind
@JourneymanGeek Thanks will read it and get back to you if I have doubts!
@Oli and @Rinzwind Then why do I always get an error msg about usb-modeswitch for every startup? !
@JourneymanGeek Doubt.... How is this different from selecting "Try ubuntu before installing" ?
from an installation media..
like DVD or USB..
07:40
@Venki: it takes an ISO, created a USB install media/livecd and adds a small image file for things you want to keep saved
Oh! Right .. So I can have things saved... And 4GB pendrive is enogh?
@JourneymanGeek
@Venki 8gb will be more relaxing :=)
Hmmm..
why did I take -3 rep? I just give them some votedown.

Q: Issue on Ubuntu Server 14.04

user275252Dear Team i am using Ubuntu server 14.04 Can we create bandwidth Limit for all user's.?I want share internet throw my Ubuntu Server s it possible or not? Please help i this case../ I have windows client

BTW JourneymanGeek told something about 'persistence" whats that? Any doc. to know about that? @Rinzwind
can I answer this with "yes you can"?
Found doc. for persistence..
@Venki: basically you have a little bit of storage that survives being rebooted
the 'core' of your os is read only like a DVD, but stuff you install and save stays that way
Hmm.. thats what the doc. also seems to tell.. thanks for your help! Anyways I want to know more about VM and dual booting too! Searching for docs. .. and excited about setting up ubuntu for another person for the first time! :-D !
@JourneymanGeek
08:07
Just finished watching someone's screencast, and I must say "People that teach people to use string concatenation instead of os.path irritate me... a lot." specifically moreso when it's a Window python 2.7 user :/
08:18
Hey.. gksudo nautilus aint working, yet !!
@terdon
ray
ray
@Venki use sudo nautilus
@JourneymanGeek did you see this question: askubuntu.com/questions/291696/…?
Fine.. I know but gksudo nautilus aint working!
if you have an answer I'll appreciate it ;)
08:24
@Danatela Maybe you use gparted after deleting casper -rw as told by this doc. ?? wiki.ubuntu.com/LiveUsbPendrivePersistent
ray
ray
@Venki gksudo not installed by default in 14.04
Yeah I have installed it.. can open gedit and other things.. but not nautilus
@Venki nice! Consider to make an answer to that question.
Maybe.. I am actually trying to make a persistence now!! If you read the transcript you will know that I was just talking about that with JourneymanGeek! @Danatela
@Venki that's why I was interested :) I saw you told about persistence
08:31
:-) Just Downloaded GParted ..

How to view the files in FAT32 partition of the USB ? @Danatela
if you did not do anything to the flash it should be selected by default
like /dev/sdc1
just select the appropriate drive
Dont get what you are saying... Care to elaborate?
I am a newbie remember? :-P
1. select the flash. In the upper right corner there is a selector
2. you will see one large partition, size of your flash
Ya.. but I need to locate casper -rw in FAT32 and delete it! how?
there is a file named casper-rw on the flash
just locate it in Nautilus
08:42
yup, thats an img file
oh! I am just so foolish!! fine.. will try..
@Venki gksudo is deprecated. instead of separating graphical sudo environment variables out in to a separate utility, canonical thought it best to roll the save of DISPLAY in to sudo. just my thoughts on your problem.
thunar works with naked sudo, so... it nautilus doesn't it's just because it was abandoned for a fork.
@hbdgaf Hmmm... BTW I think i saw a bug related to that problem filed in lp.. I selected I have the same problem..some day. But now i cant see where that bug report is.. how to see it?
it's probably by design, so it's no longer a bug. it's a design decision.
@hbdgaf Oh right!
But somewhere i saw a doc telling opening nautilus or graphical apps with sudo aint safe...
08:53
It could have been my answer to a sudo doesn't work for this question. It's a silly fight to have though, because updating an answer that uses gksudo just means people that are lagging on old distros don't get any use. So the answer isn't updated. If sudo worked, it wouldn't be a question. If sudo works, then the question is a moot point. I got asked to update it the other day, but I won't. When sudo works, it's a non-question.
Fine!
@Danatela Hey ! I first tried partitioning with Gparted... I selected apply operations and it just closed!! Then I formatted the whole Pendrive and made a startup disk again...Deleted casper -rw again... Unmounted and remounted my pen drive and now GParted isnt allowing me to resize my partition!!
you should unmount pen drive before doing any operation in Gparted on it
Oh!! Fine!! Will try now...
man gparted just closes!!!
that means something went wrong with unmounting
i dunno.. i selected unmount.. then resized .. then selected apply all operations..but it just closes!
09:06
was it opened in somewhere else?
Wait! I told Gparted to check and it shows libparted bug found....
and goes grey!
@Danatela
what kind of bug?
Dunno it just shows a small error window with no contents but just the title.. and the title was 'libparted bug found' ...
my bet is something was still mounted, or something was malformed.
probably the prior
Mmm...
How to check if it is unmounted?
Fully..
??
09:11
df
meaning?
i'd just umount the drive and see the output
of "df" ?
umount /something/blah && df | grep /something/blah etc
*umount
09:13
Ya I did df(after unmount) and then this is the output ... @Danatela @hbdgaf
df: ‘/root/.gvfs’: Permission denied

@edi9999 no, but i need a nap
@hbdgaf where then ?
@edi9999 you can do this by editing Startup Applications

09:16
@Danatela thanks !
@Venki try unmounting with -l (lazy) option
so unmount -l
umount -l ;p
ya ya ...\
arrr some my packages need to be reinstalled
and I don't know which... it is a pain
09:21
@Danatela BTW Gparted tells my pendrive(which I have now mounted) is dev/sdb but if I use umount -l /dev/sdb it tells it is unmounted according to mtab.. any idea?
umount /dev/sdb1
ok ok
/dev/sdb is the whole disk and sdb1 is a partition
Damn! This aint happening!
Same problem...!!
yep, the same with me
Gparted is buggy :(
09:26
@Danatela not really :)
that's why it is still 0.10
@Rinzwind if not, how can we proceed?
@Venki Hang on, you've mounted via gvfs right? Based on your df output, I am assuming you ran nautilus as root for some reason so the drive is mounted on /root/.gvfs and you don't have access to it. What exactly are you trying to do?
@Danatela not use root.
hmm %)
thanks!
haha root privileges are required
I actually created a Live usb with the startup disk creator on a 4GB pendrive... I selected the default 1GB persistence.. Now Danatela wants me to answer this question askubuntu.com/questions/291696/… whihc u have edited and so I am trying to dlete casper-rw and then resize the parition for persistence..as this doc. says ... wiki.ubuntu.com/LiveUsbPendrivePersistent @terdon
09:29
no
@Danatela no. if you want to reorganize a disc use the Live gParted
and if it is an usb stick no need to partition it. the create a usb thingy in dash does that
@Venki OK, I have next to no experience with live systems but I don't see how you can delete the casper-rw of a running system. As @Rinzwind said, you probably need to do this from a different live system.
What do you mean running system? I have deleted the casper -rw from my actual Ubuntu installation... not from when i was in the LiveUSB session..
@terdon
Ah, OK, sorry.
@Danatela So use sudo umount ??
09:33
@Danatela Gonna try that!
@Danatela Aint working Gparted closes now too!!!
me too. try with another live flash
i.e. boot from another live flash and repartition from it
Fine.. but now I am trying to download the additional addons for Gparted from s/w centre :-P Hoping it would work!! :-P
I have GParted live CD !! :-p forgot i had it ...
But now trying it from my Ubuntu install itself.. after addons from s/w centre.. thing is going grey ....
stays grey...
it seems we discovered a bug
But aint closing ! ... BTW I am only doing one operation now.... which is just resazing the existing partition and not creating a new one...
No good.. probably you are right @Danatela Anyways now gonna try from live CD and will get back to you later...
within half an hour..
I used 32GB Transcend DataTraveler USB flash. Deleted persistence file and tried to resize partition in Gparted. It crashed when applying changes. 09:48
@Danatela that is more likely fat32 reaching its limits :)
yep, but I tried to make it smaller than it was
%) and WinXP treats it now as 4/32 GB
i.e. it is shown as 4GB volume and 32GB partition
@Danatela you are doomed! using xp will bring disaster. did you need get that memo from microsoft?
I used my colleague's computer
oh good! means he is doomed >:-D
you are pretty evil :=)
she ;)
I'd use my computer but for the some reason USBs are not listed in VirtualBox
10:01
I am back.. I used gparted live CD... and it showed some Warning symbol like thing in /dev/sdb1 and there was nothing in the volume!! I rebooted in to my actual ubuntu installation and tried mounting and it wont!! Then I formatted my USB and now it mounts.. Strange!! @Danatela
@Danatela: did you add your user to vboxusers?
@JourneymanGeek I thought it does automatically when installs. I'll check it now
it dosen't
hmm added manually
should I relogin?
10:05
@Danatela i have marked that the bug you filed affects myself too..
If you are Hopungo-Semi-Bit !
@Venki thanks, and that was my previous name
:-P
Well, now I am not going to select the default 1GB persistence and try again...
I have "Discarded on Shutdown" option.. hope it works!
Hey !!!!!! Check out this doc. again wiki.ubuntu.com/LiveUsbPendrivePersistent The guy used 'fdisk' as Gparted aint working for him /her too!!! :-o
@Danatela
So @Danatela U know any other s/w other than GParted?
palimpsest
ok will try palimpsest ...
it is called "Disks" now
10:15
Which is in ubuntu Already ???
@Danatela
gnome-disks
kkk...
but it is useless in our case :(
it only can change partition type
Ya..just realized that... :-(
@JourneymanGeek you were right! Thanks man! USB is listed now
@Venki if you have VirtualBox, you can try to repartition USB inside Windows ;)
10:22
Hmmm.. will try that.. anyways i am trying all this only to answer that question.. now my friend is calling me and i have to go set up ubuntu for him.. so will get back to this later..and i also remmeber my friend telling about the VM .. so will try what you say from there probably !!
Ciao till next time!
@Danatela
@Venki bye!
/me is watching a show on honey badgers ;p
10:45
@JourneymanGeek how do i reset my password protected sdcard through windows?
how is it password protected?
through some options in that Nokia phone.
couldn't you just reformat it?
I forget the password.
you mean putting the sdcard in a card-reader and then formatting it.
format it to which filesystem?
oh, fat32 is usually a good choice
