@IonicăBizău That keeps querying the server after every request, this is much worse than mine :p
this my script: Bit of a noob in bash, so i think it might be better
while true; do if curl --output /dev/null --silent --fail --head http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/trusty-updates/main/dist-upgrader-all/cur‌rent/trusty.tar.gz; then echo 'Ubuntu 14.04 is Released!'; notify-send 'Ubuntu 14.04 is released!' --icon /usr/share/icons/Humanity/apps/64/gnome-terminal.xpm; break; else echo "Ubuntu 14.04 is not yet released";fi; sleep 5m; done
does a curl --head every 5 mins
I prefer to be notified instantly instead. :-)
Dan
Dan
nah, i don't want to dos the server :p
That's not dos... They have good servers. :p
We all are doing it
It's virtually a ddos
@Dan I'm going to copy and run your script.
14:06
@AvinashRaj If you want a sound alert you can try mine, as well. :-)

Q: How to upgrading to new release automatically?

Avinash RajAll of you know that within few hours, Ubuntu 14.04 is going to be released. What can i do to upgrade my system automatically when Ubuntu 14.04 is arrived? And also What can i do to download a single Ubuntu 14.04 desktop-64-bit iso file or all the trusty images automatically when it was arrived(...

Dan
Dan
@AvinashRaj sure
did i have to set the cronjob or crontab for that script to run every 5 mins?
Dan
Dan
the one i sent, no. It's just a while loop that checks for the release. If it wasn't found, it waits 5mins and repeat. if it was found it would show a desktop notification and stops.
so one time execution of that script is enough.Am i correct?
Dan
Dan
14:20
yes, but you need to keep the terminal opened. (it won't do the upgrade though, as braiam said in the answer, i wouldn't recommend the upgrade to be automatic)
@Dan simply superb..:-)
jrg
jrg
so, how long before it's released?
@jrg 6-8 hours
jrg
jrg
i say 3PM utc-4
you mean it takes, 6 to 8 hours from now.
Dan
Dan
14:27
@jrg that's your own comment :P
+1 for the depends if he drank his/her morning coffee/red bull/whatever and feels cheery to make the final release at that moment (Instead of enjoying the day with some super mario or something). comment. — jrg ♦ Apr 27 '11 at 21:50
jrg
jrg
@Dan i can still hope they won't spend time with Mario. (:
Dan
Dan
Who can resist Mario? :O
why 2 answers of Luis? I mean, I know why (merge) but why are they still there?
jrg
jrg
@Braiam because the rest of us are spending time fixing real problems, instead of a minor issue with a merged post that most people won't notice.
14:39
@karel I'd rather point to a dupe (there are many)
@Rinzwind exactly, we don't need another ;)
and has the + that he will know where to ask debian questions
it's supposed to post it after it releases
link goes to a 404 >:S
14:42
I'l probably not be here once it releases so, I'll just leave it there.
jrg
jrg
@MinatoNamikaze first link is to the beta.
@MinatoNamikaze some kind of script?
jrg
jrg
the armyofminions will have a mirror.
they should just can the iso download
jrg
jrg
14:43
and have the torrent?
ofcourse!
I'm going to order cd's dvd's ;)
lol
the last 2 releases I used USB to install
> Warning: This image is oversized (which is a bug) and will not fit onto a standard 703MiB CD. However, you may still test it using a DVD, a USB drive, or a virtual machine.
jrg
jrg
i might order my first set of dvds.
@Braiam it isn't a bug. it's no longer on a CD.
14:44
they plan to shrink it?
and I am thinking of removing my dvd player in my notebook to replace it for a 3rd hdd
@Braiam no
jrg
jrg
@Rinzwind I replaced the dvd player with a hdd.
Hey, Windows requires at least two DVDs.
jrg
jrg
so now i've got a ssd and a hdd, plus 2 external usb 3s. and then i've got a whole bunch of other bits and pieces.
14:45
trusty trusty where r u :P hi all :)
jrg
jrg
@Seth dude, windows fits on a single DVD for me... i think.
@Seth I remember autocad needing 40 fdd's :=)
and you had to install the 40th 1st and then 2 to 39 (1 was a fake to trap illegal versions)
@jrg now that you mention it, Windows 8 only requires one, so maybe they changed it.
('bout time)
@jrg nice nice. I have 1 ssd, 1 hdd and a dvd :-) never use the dvd :P
jrg
jrg
@Seth 7 only required 1 for me.
@Rinzwind which SSD? I'm a fan of the samsung 840 evo.
14:47
7 ultimate fits in 1 dvd
jrg
jrg
i also use a ocz on another box, since it's tiny.
Fancy. Who did you get your disks from?
Maybe it's because I'm usually stuck with the hardware manufacturer's disks.
jrg
jrg
I just downloaded the ISO, but I used the OEM license key for that machine.
@jrg hmmm HMMM
OCZ!
14:50
jrg
jrg
@Rinzwind Oh, cool!
My second PC
jrg
jrg
i've been impressed with their stuff.
15 seconds boot on my notebook _O-
jrg
jrg
14:51
mine was 20, but only because I encrypted it and had a ton of services.
NOW. I just got a Lenovo Y510 with 1TB/8GB Hybrid, and 16GB RAM. Where is 14.04?
jrg
jrg
that was before I discovered the powers and wonders of vagrant.
@Mitch incoming.
did someone say vagrant?
What OS are you using? — Radu Rădeanu 4 hours ago
14:52
@jrg still not bad! I never need to use hibernate or suspend. I use my notebook for watching anime and movies in the bus+train (each 1/2 hour) so I needed a quick boot+shutdown
cygwin on windows vista — user269826 4 hours ago

@Braiam wtf :D
no wonder he doesn't have sudo...
jrg
jrg
@JorgeCastro YAY
btw, i asked about that about a year ago, didn't get a response. now I am happy that they are declared ready for everyday use. (:
oh man
"you can install another operating system on a windows PC??? ...do you know of any website that has a tutorial explaining how to do that?"
14:54
they've been in beta the whole time
but yeah, there're ready
jrg
jrg
@Rinzwind I can't use hibernate or suspend because of the encryption, and my paranoia.
@Braiam I am having a hard time not believing he is trolling
jrg
jrg
no vmware builds yet? :(
i guess i'm still stuck building my own boxes then.
@jrg tsk! :D
@Rinzwind factory defect :P
14:55
@jrg my hope is the overwhelming downloads from vagrantcloud will show there's a demand for them
@PrasadRD could be :D and hello!
@Rinzwind :P hi
@JorgeCastro so what is vagrant?
it's a CLI for VMs basically
14:57
I fu**ing hate remembering passwords
@Mateo "Vagrant is free and open-source software for creating and configuring virtual development environments. It can be considered a wrapper around virtualization"
> Vagrant is a tool for building complete development environments. With an easy-to-use workflow and focus on automation, Vagrant lowers development environment setup time, increases development/production parity, and makes the "works on my machine" excuse a relic of the past.
so, it shares virtual machines?
you can share them
jrg
jrg
@Mateo it's a way of managing VMs seamlessly
so you do a git clone of a project
run 'vagrant up'
and you're set
no other setup required
basically, it's canned awesomeness environments.
15:00
ah, sounds neat
jrg
jrg
i'm responsible at work for spinning the vagrant stuff every few weeks.
i just haven't gotten a cronjob to do it for me.
if you generate vmware ones and share them, that would be <3
more hours to wait :(
mv $USER /home/
jrg
jrg
15:02
@JorgeCastro sure, i can do that.
for the non-coders: bbl going home :D
bye @Rinzwind
jrg
jrg
@Rinzwind you can't mv a environment variable that is type string
YOUR SYNTAX IS INVALID
can't copy, target exists, aborting! :P
First time using keepassx, any suggestion or advice when using password managers?
jrg
jrg
15:08
@blade19899 use it for everything
keepass?
jrg
jrg
i used keepass for a long time
it's a very good piece of software
(I moved to lastpass for ease of use, but I still have a keepass database for the important, non-web things)
I think i will give keepassx a try for a couple of days, and then see what others have to offer
Thanks!

@MinatoNamikaze Are you watching IPL?
I'm busy :/
Keeping up with Google now
yeh it's downloadig
14.04
i think it's arrived
Yeah I suppose.. See this too : releases.ubuntu.com/trusty
But its not on ubuntu.com
15:39
But the Ubuntu page doesn't show any.
Why don't they publish it on ubuntu download page?
@MinatoNamikaze how?
@AvinashRaj Just ask it? :P
your script starts to download 14.04 amd64 .iso file.
Dan
Dan
no
it's the official release version
15:44
it used to say beta ;) now it doesn't
Then Why it isn't displayed on the ubuntu.com/download/desktop ?
@AvinashRaj because.
Dan
Dan
they haven't annouced it yet i guess
and do-release-upgrade still says no release available yet
they want the tech savvy people to try it first so they can fix possible last min mistakes
Probably they don't want their servers crashed by putting the file on their website and letting everybody know it!! :-P
15:48
you guys know you can download a daily image from yesterday and be totally fine right?
@JorgeCastro they have it up on releases.ubuntu.com/trusty ;)
It's released
16:07
\o/
With release of new Ubuntu will AU get new looks ? !! ;-)
Ubuntu 14.04 has been released. Grab it at the Ubuntu Website or use the armyofminions mirror as stated here

Oh, script works :P
Second link just shows a kitty!!
@MinatoNamikaze
@Venki refresh :P
Yeah it just worked!! :-)
16:11
Happy Ubuntu 14.04 day everyone!
jrg
jrg
The torrents seem to be doing fine
question
is there a program that does a graphical "bits flying" of network traffic?
never knew one
I haven't heard about something like that
jrg
jrg
etherape
16:13
@jrg try nethogs
jrg
jrg
that was it
well, it's not literal "bits flying"
jrg
jrg
close enough
amd64 is going at a much faster rate than 32bit for how much i'm uploading
i'm uploading almost 3MB/s for amd64, i386 is only 1.
wonder if people are finally doing 64 instead of 32.
Makes sense
may i download Ubuntu trusty 14.04 from here shadowfax.armyofminions.com/trusty/… . Is this a final release?

Q: How can I move all the window controls to the right (or left)?

Matt KayeRunning 12.04. Downloaded Ubuntu tweak and set window controls to the right side. Only some programs follow the rule. Pidgin as an example has window controls on the right. But Chrome, Thunderbird, Geany, still have controls on the left. How can I move ALL window controls(close/min/max) to the r...

anyone know this one for 14.04?
jrg
jrg
@AvinashRaj as the guy who just downloaded that from the torrent and put it there, yes it's the final release.
Ok guys! I made a backup and now i am upgrading..Hope the upgrade doesnt break my system and hope after the upgrade my conky will work!! :-)
jrg
jrg
@AvinashRaj where in the world are you? Unless you're in the US, that mirror is likely to be slower than slow...
oh nm I see it
@jrg please provide me the fast mirror.
16:19
@AvinashRaj torrent is the fastest you can get
jrg
jrg
@AvinashRaj i think there is a amazon s3 mirror, if you can't use the torrent.
thank you guys, i will try to download through torrent . BTW why it isn't posted on the main site?
they're probably updating it
for me it takes 11 hours .. :(
BBT :-) sudo mv Ubuntu-13.10 Ubuntu-14.04
jrg
jrg
16:35
so the peak usage of my server in or out has been 25.6Mb
come on people, what do i need to have seeding for it to actually get used? :P
Torrent Linky?
For 64bit desktop version of trusty
Or any fastest mirror available for downloading on India.
jrg
jrg
16:52
hey @jrg
is the torrent file you have given available for download now?
is it the beta or the final? cause the website hasn't been updated
jrg
jrg
it's final

Q: How can I make the screen black and white?

Quora FeansThis is basically to transform the screen (of a laptop), into a black and white screen. I am using Ubuntu 13.04.

17:11
someone please give a me a link to the 32 bit version

@KodduX thank you

@mojo706 wow! good luck with that...
@KodduX haha 126 kbps. Im patient and just finished exams I have waited for 14.04 I must have it
17:34
@jrg :P
ubuntu-14.04-desktop-amd64.iso.torrent is ahead by 4 Gb!
and from my personal stats we can remove ubuntu-14.04-server-amd64.iso.torrent Nobody wants it :P

chromium when not flash installed redirects to wiki.ubuntu.com/Chromium/Getting-Flash
when did that happen? :D
18:03
@Rinzwind good!
ah, yeah. it is up on the ubuntu.com ubuntu.com/download/desktop
apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
but\
:D Ubuntu is here
I mean 14.04
ask ubuntu should get the new background too, the dots are old...
@Braiam Hooray!
@Braiam (but no torrents? I don't want mirror guilt...)
the mirror is from jrg - the one one the star wall

www.ubuntu.com has becaome better I see!! And whats that "discourse" ??
@Venki unbuntu discource is jorge's baby
2
it is a new type of forum
@Rinzwind who's the mother?
lol, not my baby
Jeff's baby
O_O
@JorgeCastro :D
18:48
It's a nice baby though
I am a fan
@Rinzwind Yeah Yeah I am just seeing it now... seems a bit daunting at first sight...
@Braiam Jeff is the dad it seems :+) so that would make Jorge the mother
wait
ehm
that needs more thought >:D
@Rinzwind :O
indeed!
18:50
wait, Jeff Atwood?
O_O
@Braiam how many Jeff's have you heard of? :=)
I didn't remembered that was Atwood that pushed discourse forward
chromium is unstable :(((
keeps going gray :(
they're transitioning from gtk to aura, so it's unstable
@Rinzwind time to come to the dark sid... err... no, the other dark side that has a fox
18:52
I'm using chrome unstable with aura and it's pretty great
@Braiam I got chromium and firefox both installed
@JorgeCastro with the new notifications and desktop thing?
firefox I have set up for work with a citrix client
@JorgeCastro So from what I have understood till now... Discourse to ubuntu discourse is similar to what SE is to AU..right?
18:56
yeah
discourse is just the software
come to think of it
was the URL or name of it not suppose to change?
bug in chromium: it keeps complaining flash is not installed but the video runs :P
@JorgeCastro Ok then with all due respect where is the help button ??? Why should I visit discourse website to know about ubuntu discourse? Shouldnt there be a help specific to ubuntu discourse? (Note:-No offense here. Just constructive feedback)
I am confused about what you are asking
@jorge is the site still in beta/test/fun?
@Venki about "how to use discourse" or about "what is discourse for?"
19:00
Both. A definitive guide like that which comes up when I press 'help' in AU ...
@JorgeCastro he is saying he would like to see it more promiment on the AU and/or Ubuntu sites
or in the help section :D
@Braiam ok BUT I see his problem: that assumes you KNOW there is a discource.ubuntu :)
ahh.... then I have no idea what he's talking about
IMO, is promoted already
then venki does not look at the right places _O0-
19:03
btw, this needs just one more askubuntu.com/q/300462/169736
I remember Jorge posting about discource here a few times :D :D
Hmmm...now i see... thanks @Braiam .. I feel that they should keep some 'help', 'faq' and similar buttons in the site....NOT just a link to discourse.org ...
@Rinzwind btw, "UNBUNTU"?
well there's a link on the top of the page that tells you what the site is about
19:05
@Rinzwind dupe
btw, for those that still don't know or forgot: DynDNS free will shutdown in 30 days
I know! edit the frontpage: IF user=venki < blink > discourse </ blink >
and make it bright blue >:D
@Rinzwind you want to be murdered already?
Ahhhhh.. it gets clearer now.. there is an FAQ under 'go to another topic list or category' button .... Then I suggest making it more prominent ... stupid newbies like me need it!! :-)
checked
and I never used dyndns :D
newbies learn by asking!
or doing and failing and doing again
Hmm..
19:09
and there chromium went gray again
(or do you all prefer grey?)

hi
@Rinzwind 65 :)
Hi ;)
I am ssh-ed into a VPS server of mine and would like to create a second terminal, any way to achieve that? (debian 7)
@CBenni yes ssh a 2nd time :)
ah that works?
great :)
20:41
@RaduRădeanu lol
(I didnt want to test that because I am very new to ssh)
@CBenni fyi I tend to use putty connection manager for that
(it lets you create putty tabs and you can set them side by side or underneath eachother
I am running putty myself, I dont know what the connection manager is, but I am sure google will tell me
very nifty for code checking
and that sounds pretty cool
I mainly want it to start a process without losing access to its output and locking my console
also, I need to figure out why I am getting http 500s :D
20:47
herm, my 12.04 server says no new release is available.
@Seth was it installed with alternate or the server iso? alternate went away, so if it checks something in lsb-release that indicates that... it could be a corner case problem.
yeah the server ISO.
They killed that?
the alternate iso. it was different from server.
it's what people used in the olden times to do full disk encryption and a minimal system... but you said you used the server iso. so, not the problem. sorry for the confusion.
@Seth there's no upgrade from LTS to LTS until .1 gets released
@Braiam we have a winner.
20:54
Oh that makes sense.
clap clap clap clap clap clap
is so sad that I was clapping to myself :(
i did the we have a winner clap clap sound effect in my head...
Can anyone think of a dupe for this:

Q: video is jerky on high quality files

sdsThe computer is relatively old and underpowered, so video playback of high quality videos is jerky with any player. How do I convert a high quality video to low quality video?

@Seth there's so many angles to a good answer on that question. do you have hardware support for any particular codec(h264), is it nvidia (vpdau stuff), just downconvert to a lower resolution, choose a lower overhead codec, and so on and so on. i know we have transcoding questions, but i don't think we have one with that sort of answer... of course if you made that kind of answer, you'ld probably wind up hearing "wait i meant hulu..."
20:59
Yeah, it needs a bit of clarification alright.
Mind adding a comment? I've got to run again.
I'll drop something in there.
21:17
Why do people try to either A) put game advertisements in questions, B) run directories, or C) post questions non language error messages. There's clearly a shell script in there, but the OP tries to run the directory. Grr... too much gray and it's in the low quality flag-queue askubuntu.com/questions/449257/dont-open-a-file

Cuttlefish is not the dopefish -- me ;)
@Mateo I am often compared to that character in a quite scoundrel-ly way.
