Just stop pasting and repasting your meta question :)
@Venki probably don't do that at least when multiple mods are around.
Ok.
@Braiam what's "the close queue in the form of 10k-tools"?

Aditya PatilBASH, 57 This is longer than most answers, but there is nothing bad in trying. f=`echo aaaaaaaaaaaaa|wc -c`;e=`echo aa|wc -c`;echo $e.$f gives 3.14

@Braiam Ah, OK, not a queue then.
well, it's a "queue" in the same way that there's a delete "queue" and flags "queue"
@Oli I think it's a good change...

@Braiam Yeah probably

@Braiam I can still get to askubuntu.com/tools/flagged if that's what you mean
no, I mean, do flags get pushed to the LQ review queue?

@Braiam Oh I see... Errrrm... Pass.
Good to hear on merging those queues
@Braiam i think so yeah.
all Not-an-answer flags get pushed to LQ review queue as well as the mod queue.

Excuse me. Is there any question with a good answer on 'compiz crashing after installing fglrx installation' issue that is protected by the community and with high votes and all?
We have this:

BTW it is temporary

@AvinashRaj ?
@PatilAditya that 131 votes question would work...
i'm going to post one of script to github gist.
14:56
but then in the answer it says to sudo apt-get something..I am wondering how will a newbie connect to internet through terminal...so that answer must include something about nmcli shouldnt it?
@PatilAditya
I don't know anything about it. I just googled it, so pardon me!
Ok thanks a lot for the help though!! :-D
@PatilAditya Is there any other common problemS with fglrx drivers that you know about?
@Venki none that googling with " site:askubuntu.com fglrx problem " won't cover

OK. good bye for today, it's 8:45 pm
@terdon can i post the script that are created by me on gist?
Is there a query to display questions that are community protected for a particular search?
@Braiam :) Not surprised
@AvinashRaj huh?
i already posted a script as an answer on AU. Did i post the same on github gist?
@AvinashRaj hmmm, so you're thinking there's an EFI table left over? Perhaps.
There are many questions like that on AU.
fixparts may or maynot work.I'm not sure about that.
I put user id to -1. But then I want to search the community protected question that will come up if I search "fglrx problem" in AU... Any query for that..?
@Venki Why do you want only protected questions? That only means that they were getting spam answers not that they are particularly good.
Really!! I didn't know!! Then, can i get highly voted questions for that search with some query?
yes, that's useful because you can concentrate on pages that people read
instead of the backwater questions with 4 views
15:29
@JorgeCastro Exactly. Maybe most favourite questions too?
yup, though I find views and favorites to be similar
high traffic questions have a lot of favorites, and the other way around
@terdon is there any error in this command.

Comic Sans is the best thing ever happened to mankind
PLEASE, KILL HIM!
@AvinashRaj well, there's no input.
15:33
huh? why?
Do you mean while read -r line; do echo "sudo add-apt-repository -r ppa:$line"; done < out ?
@fossfreedom why? You like comic sans? The single most overused font since arial?
So, are there any queries that will show the most relevant and most highly voted questions for a search like "fglrx problem" ?
out means stdout?
@fossfreedom $('b').css('font-family', '"Comic Sans MS"'); $('i').css('font-family', '"Comic Sans MS"'); and talk to me again
@terdon for 7.5 hours of the day I have no choice but to see and use various MS fonts!
15:35
@AvinashRaj No, it's what you had. I have no idea what you're attempting, why did you write out there?
@fossfreedom ouch, poor mousey.
Actually, some of the MS fonts are fine, it's just the overuse of comics that bugs me. Every damn presentation I have to see some idiot things that using it makes them look younger or something.
Ahhhhh:( how is this possible???????
@terdon ^^
What can i do?
@AvinashRaj 1) Don't use sudo where it's not needed, just rm /tmp/awk2.txt
2. You have a line break and a pipe in the while read; do ...;done < foo.txt
see the while part
on both.
@AvinashRaj should be : while read -r line; do ...; done < /tmp/awk.txt
You have a < | (or is that the cursor?) and a new line
Also, come on, you know better than this! If something is not working and you want help mention the error message
Someone should add answer for 13.10 also here...then it will be an ultimate question for installing fglrx drivers... askubuntu.com/questions/124292/…
15:44
@AvinashRaj when writing files to /tmp, make use as possible of mktemp
since you don't know what can the user be doing at any point of time
So, are there any queries that will show the most relevant and most highly voted questions for a search like "fglrx problem" ?
@terdon you already upvoted this answer.

$TMPFILE=$(mktemp)
@Venki exactly which problem? can you be more specific?
it's all because of <pre> tag. Please friends don't use this tag for codes.
"I have a problem" is the least useful piece of information
15:47
Actually I cant be specific.! I am searching for common fglrx problems that most AU users face...
@AvinashRaj Yes, but there you have it correctly. In the screenshot you have a newline where there should be none.
pre tag cuts down some part in my script.
@AvinashRaj I saw the answer you have posted here... askubuntu.com/questions/65911/… ... I cant understand much...(Sorry If I am being a nuisance here)....But should you not save "ppa-remove" as "ppa-remove.sh" and then run it with "sudo sh ppa-remove.sh" ??
@Venki why sh?
uhh.. as a newbie i though shell scripts should be saved with .sh and only then they will work..I am wrong here ??
If I am.. just ignore it...
:-d

@Braiam Ok, what's the room about though, don't know it :p

 The DMZ

DMZ means DeMilitarized Zone, which is a environment where there's no protection whatsoever

@Braiam I thought it was a network DMZ..
@Alvar please stop flaming people in comments
You can just answer the question or vote
every time you do that it takes another person to flag the comment, and another person to delete the comment.
@Seth it can be used for non-networking stuff
Uh yeah, I know the term. I just thought the room was named after the networking DMZ.
Ah wait. Nevermind.
I was getting two things mixed up.
"Root Access" is more strange room name, IMO
I mean, Windows doesn't have "root"
all are shifted to that DMZ room.
16:41
@Braiam Yeah but SU isn't just a Windows site.
it would make more sense in UL, tho
yeah maybe.
@JorgeCastro The progress bars and colors work on the apt-get install, remove and upgrade commads.. Or at least the progress bars so. I'm pretty sure the colors do to.
hmm, not on mine.
Really? Odd.
I'll post a screenshot later.

17:01
@Braiam How does that work? It looks like it should take a post ID of a post in the review queue but I can't get it to work
@terdon no, is the id of the post outside of the review
@terdon are you sure you're not using the review id? (instead of the post id?)
@Braiam and @Seth Yes, that's the one I used. I clicked on a post from the review queue, went to it's actual page and took the post ID from there. OK, I'll try with a different one.
Nope, tried with 110694 which is the ID of askubuntu.com/q/110694/85695 found through the close queue
huh, odd alright.
The author of the query is in the Tavern now, you could go ask him.
@terdon that was voted today! The dump is done weekly :(

Q: root privileged

MichaelHi I am new to ubuntu I want to install lights, and have to be root from the terminal I typed: Su (to become in the root) but in the terminal it say authentication failure.

That's a dupe of something I'm sure.. but I can't find it.
23
Q: Why is there no option to login as root?

Renjith GWhy does Ubuntu not allow the GUI users to login as root at the time of system start up like administrator in Windows? Why they are restricting us to login only through the terminal?

Those are both similar, but it was more along the lines of why su doesn't work and what to do to become root safely. Mitch's is closest. He isn't asking why the root account is disabled.
he's asking why "say authentication failure" which is "because root is disabled"
Right, but that isn't the same as "why is the root user disabled".
18:25
darn, where's the byobu cheatsheet?
OK, maybe this would be better..askubuntu.com/questions/152793/…
no that is a different problem.
I guess your first one is good enough.
OK..
@Seth he already know how to get root privileges
he just don't know that the root account is disabled
that doesn't make it a duplicate of that question.
He isn't asking why the account is disabled, he is asking why su isn't working.
18:30
neither yours
The answer to one is different than the answer to the other.
@Braiam Actually it does:
> su lets you switch user so that you're actually logged in as root. But this options is default disabled. Read this thread for more information.
@Seth is not the same question
It isn't the best question, but it's what we could find.
if it isn't then just don't
I'm able to write a better answer that adresses him
well in that case we'll make this a more canonical question because you are right it isn't a very good dupe situation, and could be improved.

Q: How can I lock AND blank the screen from the keyboard in 14.04?

SethIn older versions of Ubuntu when you pressed Ctrl+Alt+L it would lock and blank the screen (start the screensaver). In 14.04 it just locks the screen. How can I get it to lock AND blank the screen?

I wonder if that is a bug.
@Seth I would report it right now... is kind of bad to disable the keyboard shortcut
@Braiam Why? I've disabled all sorts of keyboard shortcuts before.
ok, what you are talking right now?
in gnome I just press meta + L
21:21
@Braiam "is kind of bad to disable the keyboard shortcut" I asked why?
@Braiam meta focuses the menu bar in Unity, so that doesn't work.
(or launches the HUD)
Ah wait, that's Alt.
@Seth if you always have used that for UX, why change it right no?
in gnome I just press meta (win) + L and it shuts down the screen + lock
@Braiam no. They changed some features in the way the lock screen works/looks. It isn't necessarily a bug, but a change.
@Braiam Yes, that was changed in 14.04.
@Seth it doesn't do what I expect and is not documented: bug
hm, anyone notice that the new lock screen doesn't warn about caps lock
@Braiam feature change != bug.
but I'll see if it has already been reported.
21:25
@Mateo didn't they move the lock screen around to being lightdm based?
sounds like an oversight in the new implementation
I think "themed"
yeah, I've had weird caps lock issues since i started playing morrowind again.
@hbdgaf running around a lot ;)
@Seth apparently that's not old askubuntu.com/q/126782/169736
@Mateo fast athletics points makes your dex go through the roof early in the game and gets you a fairly massive to-hit bonus.
21:28
@Braiam that's a different question, although somewhat related.
i do the same with block after my first epic set of armor. just go in a field with a heavy shield and find a rat. look at it and background the game for an hour or two.
@Seth I'm not saying is duplicated
@Seth is not gnome-screensaver anymore
@Mateo - in other news, some of the stock app stuff is coming along nicely. it was mostly for historical back-checking of custom queries with lots of identifiers and running a substantial amount of math on the outputs. i talked it over with a friend who did their degree in machine learning. they seem to think it's a solid, if i can isolate the variables i'm grinding upon.
@hbdgaf fun stuff
@Mateo yes it is. the approach i'm taking is quite weird, but the more i work out the details - the more i get the "you might be even smarter than i initially gave you credit for...". taking it as a vote of confidence and motivation.
21:45
oh, that and don't click on anything when you open a laptop from being locked, I lost focus from the lock screen and ended up typing passwords in stuff on the desktop...
need to see if a bug was filed on that yet...
22:02
wow, 50 close votes huh

@Mateo one here please :P askubuntu.com/q/446460/169736
