Q: Allocating the main memory in Ubuntu 12.04

GarethSegmentation or Paging scheme that ubuntu 12.04 use to allocate the main memory? Does it use both of it? How? If it doesn't use both scheme, so what the scheme that should be use? why?

@Seth I would migrate it to UL
if he didn't got answer here
Why?
00:25
@NathanOsman that is amazing-ly something.

2 hours later…
02:03
Hi everybody
02:14
o/
02:33
Can we look at audit results?
02:50
Lol
LOL Powerhell insaid of Power Shell
03:13
yeah the Powerhell
Did you watch it?
@Danatela Did you watch it, or watching it?
watched
What do you think of it?
@Danatela no not really. Thinking of a specific one? I might be able to pull it up.
@Seth thanks but specific one means it would be my own, so… I just failed one
03:26
So do you want to look at it or? Of course I'm not going to pull someone else's up :-P
OK show me it
Not a particular good answer, but that question was simple :-/
yep I just wanted to ask author to expand his answer
Yeah good idea
03:42
@Andrew cool video
@Danatela it is soo true thou
but it loads too quick :P
I mean, the Crap OS)
I saw such performance with 13.04 when installed it on RAID0 made of 2 SSD
It loaded in 2s!
Anything on an SSD will be quick.

2 hours later…
05:20
@Seth Win8 from the same array manages to boot in 10s
05:32
I used to have Windows 8 on an SSD and it would boot in about 8 seconds. I moved it to a mechanical drive and it takes nearly a minute, if not longer.
05:45
@NathanOsman actually it slowly loads the user profile when it comes to mechanical HDD
06:04
@NathanOsman Mines a HDD, takes like 30 seconds :P
Stock is faster
06:22
@NathanOsman do you have large files in Documents or Videos? This may be the problem
06:43
I don't have really large files, no.
07:07
anyone here know anything about BIOS? I accidentally set the system to default, and now im getting the "disk boot failure insert system disk" error.
that means you have selected wrong disk
i cant seem to change the primary master or slave
try to change boot order
i tired that too. enabling only hard drive, and disabling CD rom and removable.
it shows the CD drive as the primary master. is that normal?
it doesn't mean anymore to care about master/slave
hmm
07:11
ok so primary slave selection doesnt matter then ?
not normal
either secondary master or primary slave should be normal
what is not normal? sorry im confused
oops
primary slave is normal
ok so what do i need to do here?
why is the machine giving me this error
?
boot from livecd and post us Boot-Repair log
07:13
how do i get the boot repair log?
just google boot repair
first link has good explanation
i cant even get the machine to boot off cd
same error: disk boot failure insert system disk
is it UEFI?
ok i resolved tha tissue by setting teh CD to the primary master
could you send me the boot repair link
07:19
im not sure which search terms you used for "boot repair", and would not know if i got the same results as you did without it.
ty
i guess there isnt an easier way to do this.

Q: Is it fine to comment to an answerer or asker to remove his/her answer or question?

VenkiSuppose I see a bad question or a bad answer. Instead of outrightly flagging it or down voting it, is it fine to comment in the question or answer to the asker or answerer to remove it? I ask this because sometimes the asker or answerer might have a tiny reputation but at the same time might have...

But I am a bit confused if my description is clear. can you read it and give suggestions for edit ?
just added the comment
07:47
Yeah I saw. THanks. AS i have said in the comment...why not post it as an answer?
I'm thinking about it
Hmm..
I have no much experience in writing meta answers however

Q: Not able to login with LightDM

Rohan DongreI am using Ubuntu 13.10 with Unity desktop. Unfortunately I am not able to log into my desktop. After entering correct password it keeps looping back to login. Could you please help me to sort out this problem? I need help because I have important data in my laptop and I don't want to reinstall ...

Have an eye out for it..It may be a dupe..But I have requested the asker for more info...
09:00
@Oli @Seth can you communicate with ConnorJ? I just wanna him to know that I've set bounty for his question and it soon expires. Just not to reward wrong person
@Danatela Communications via email are for "serious moderation purposes" - this doesnt really fall into that category
@fossfreedom then what I should do with my bounty? Should I grace the best answer?
not alot you can do - just leave it be - if a valid answer comes that garners 2 votes or more then they'll get half the bounty.
Dammit touch input -_-
Clicked the wrong review option
09:12
and if it will be accepted?
you dont need to get an accepted answer to be awarded a bounty. 2 or more votes allow you to get half the bounty automatically after the grace period
thanks
and if it will be accepted I should give the full bounty, just realized =)
if the OP comes back and accepts the answer, the answerer will automatically get the bounty - you dont need to do it
ah nice
does anyone know how to determine hosts available in local network?

Q: is there a developer willing to dev a lacking printer driver?

user267771we are ready and willing to dump windows in our office and move to Zorin installations, that are very friendly for windows users. We tested on one laptop, and works great! Only, we have a Multifunction printer scanner, the OKI ES 4180 MFP, that lacks an appropriate driver for Linux: we can see it...

:=)
so much wrong there _O-
oh you did not expect that question did you? :D
I saw a nice link from braiam yesterday in chat where developers can get monetary bounties for doing opensource stuff. Let me dig it out.
09:58
I know

@Danatela - your bounty OP has come back!
Excuse me..you guys must check out this question askubuntu.com/questions/442288/not-able-to-login-with-lightdm ...it might be a dupe...but i have asked the asker for more hardware details...
@AvinashRaj Hi! I think we must add an article about installing fglrx drivers and troubleshooting potential problems with it somewhere...I feel there are toooo many questions about it... I myself have answered 7 questions based on that topic alone !!
11:46
Good.
is that all the solutions are same?
Almost... just visit my profile and see my answers..you will know..
So..is there a way to add an article about it somewhere in Ubuntu or AU?
@Venki - create a meta - ask for the best canonical Q&A we should link stuff to
Make a single elaborate answer for a particular briefly explained question.And then mark all the other quetions as dupe of that main question.
follow foss's
@fossfreedom Care to elaborate?
we've done this in the past - such as a canonical Q for upgrading/installing software on old releases, or broadcom drivers. If the community thinks its a good idea to create a canonical Q about fglrx installation and troubleshooting then we should (as a community) start to think about closing/merging/duping against this canonical Q
Oli

11:52
It seems that every time I go to review a suggested edit, it's so severe that I'm halfway on my way to nuking an account for vandalism before I realise it's a bloody audit.
Well what is a "CANONICAL QUESTION" ?
I have only heard of AU questions..!
I know CANONICAL is the company that runs Ubuntu..
A master question - the gospel for all similar Q's
Ok then in meta AU I should post a question in the lines of "...
Oh I got stuck there!!
Ok here it is. Should that question be in the lines of "Does the AU community require a CANONICAL question on installing fglrx drivers?"
yeah - something like that title. Give examples in your Q where you believe the Q's are very similar and maybe we should consider duping/merging etc.
12:00
Now I got it!! Thanks !! question is coming up soon.. will get back to u when I have posted it..you have got to help me to tweak that question .. Can you ?

@Achu That's an interesting setup... Don't suppose you know how a stack like that (hhvm+perconia) performs compared to a more standard php-fpm+mysql on real world apps? I've got a legacy server full of Wordpress installs the are grinding away at my soul because they're so slow. Been considering HHVM for a while but never looked at the database.
@Danatela wow, you created a separate room.
12:44
@AvinashRaj just for the temporal reason
... back - cuppa tea in hand!
Oli
Oli
@Achu Oh my... ~9 times quicker on Wordpress before database improvements. I guess I'm going to have to look at this seriously. Edit: No... ~40 times quicker when warmed up. This is serious.
@Venki yep - looks good. Let the debate begin
It has already!! Check out Briam's comment there...
12:52
is there any bash regex ebook?
@StackExchange meh, that would be more funny if it said "fossfreedom has frozen the users of this room."
@AvinashRaj why? bash regex is special? ;-)
Oli
Oli
@AvinashRaj Which do you mean? String manipulation/matching in Bash or sed/grep/awk/perl/etc?
but someone says, regex varies between programming languages.
Oli
Oli
12:56
Either way, I'd probably shoot for a generic regex format and then learn (from experience when \d doesn't work) when you're dealing with an engine that won't let you use shortcuts :)
@Oli and @Braiam this link posted to me by @fossfreedom askubuntu.com/questions/61396/installing-nvidia-drivers seems to contain an answer to a number of questions.......So why dont we create something similar specific to fglrx?
@AvinashRaj not that much. In linux we probably use most of the times the perl version.
Oli
Oli
@Venki Yeah, and in my opinion that's far too broad. Luis originally wanted to have all graphics drivers under one roof. That sort of conglomeration just isn't useful outside of a documentation role.
i think, it covers all prog languages.
13:00
@AvinashRaj yes :=)
but i can't find the original one.
@Oli So what do you suggest we do? Atleast we must create a question that tells about all the ways to install fglrx??
oh and @AvinashRaj that o'reily book is good! :)
@Oli They got a WordPress installation running at 23 concurrent requests per second, all the way up to 949 per second. Thats cool ;) Please let me know if are going to use my box and find any hiccup. and Can i get a start at github? :D
@Rinzwind it's so hard to read O'reily books.
13:02
@Oli BTW, That my first VagrantBox I will make more interesting box's the coming days.
@Oli So what do you suggest we do? Atleast we must create a question that tells about all the ways to install fglrx??
@AvinashRaj not an ebook but perldoc.perl.org/perlrequick.html and perldoc.perl.org/perlre.html are good too
The base box is on my dropbox and the link might be suspended by dropbox. Does anyone know a free server for this?
poor Oli, like 4 ping
Sorry if I am being nuisance..But dnt freeze me for that!!!
:-(
13:07
@Rinzwind thanks for the linkies.
@AvinashRaj what do you think about this? meta.askubuntu.com/questions/8893/…
follow mods suggestions.
Hmmm.. So we will have to create separate questions about different ways to install...different ways to troubleshoot...But I will be needing help to do that and also inform moderators about it..so that questions could be marked dupe..right?
things like hardware get complicated
it depends on the video card
If I have a certain ATI card it totally works out of the box, if I have a different one it might be a horribly supported experience
that's why the broadcom question is so xbox huge, no one wants to read that.
@blade you choose a right package.
13:14
But anyways..a how-to just about installing ATI driver need not be complicated..I suppose ???
it is, ATI's linux support is pretty horrible
that's why it's so complicated
Do you mean that there is no single way which everyone could follow for installing a driver!! Thats bad! But probably we can have a "If you have a card released after this date do this install" kinda thing ?
And we can learn which date is to be specified from the ATI site?
Just think of whatever your worst nightmare is in supporting a piece of technology is. :)
:) BTW
this one askubuntu.com/questions/446455/… is off topic?
@AvinashRaj This seems to be off topic this one askubuntu.com/questions/446455/… to me. Why did you answer ?
OMG.
@mods But it's not a bug report.
@AvinashRaj explain and we can reverse if necessary
It is a bug. Best to report this though it probably will be changed in due time (I remember this from older releases too) — Rinzwind 4 mins ago
@JorgeCastro You will see that they support only some cards..So we can say "IF you have these drivers continue reading this answer"...
is that the software-center version is same as the Ubntu release version? @Rinzwind
@AvinashRaj yep - so its a bug. close and move on
13:25
@fossfreedom that question you suggested I could post got the attention of a few moderators..What do you think?
@Venki The purpose of Meta is to get the community involved in the debate. Consensus is often reached after a week or so - so plenty of time to consider and wait for additional comments and answers
@AvinashRaj If I remember correctly what is shown is an image and not text. Someone just needs to create a new images that shows 14.04
Oh! Ok... But for now both the moderators who got involved just said gave their suggestion and didnt even upvote my question!! Will it get attention at all?
@Venki it will :) just sit back and relax :-D
Ok!!
13:29
remember - AU is a 24hr site - lots of people who are sleeping at the moment - I'm sure they'll come to play in a few hours!
@JorgeCastro should we separate them?
you call this temporary?
its all relative... :P
13:30
@PatilAditya yes! it has an end date so it is temporary
someone is...quite banned
Anyways probably i must tweak my question according to mod suggestion?
@Venki nope. leave it as is
just for clarification, it's not me!
Ok...
13:31
see the year.
@PatilAditya sure! sure! we believe you :-)
@PatilAditya who's account is that?
@AvinashRaj bad question ;-)

@PatilAditya I wonder if the user will come back after the 15 years and start all over :P
Oli
Oli
@PatilAditya And that's why you listen to moderators when they're in a bad mood.
I wonder what the user must have done to get suspended for decades but still not get a permanent ban?
@Oli Is that real or a bug? Suspended till December 2026!? Why not ban?
Oli
Oli
@PatilAditya There's no such thing as a permanent ban. We can destroy and delete accounts but that doesn't neccessarily stop the user just creating a new one.
@terdon Hi !
13:40
@Oli but the user can create a new account after temporary ban, I think.
@Danatela Hi!
Hi Venki!
@Venki Hi
@Oli OK, so what's the point of suspending someone for so long? Is it just simpler than banning the account?
just crashed my system Ж(
13:41
@Danatela That's not fun :P
@terdon and @Danatel I posted a question here. Awaiting community's response...

Sure
@Venki we saw
13:42
O_o ... scary flashback - James Mitch - yeah remember that boy. Bad boy mitch
hm.. So Danatela..What do you think?
I'm agree with Braiam
@Venki Yes, I saw when you posted it (and have upvoted) and I also saw when you mentioned it again 10 minutes ago. Hint, hint. :)
single issue - single answer
btw can anyone say what's wrong with my old question?
2
Q: How can I adjust framebuffer or X screen relative position?

DanatelaA long time ago in a galaxy far, far away I had fixed boot screen using this nice solution. Since that time I have been looking for the way to move framebuffer in virtual console slightly to the right and down, relatively to X screen position (or vice-versa), because it is shown in wrong position...

Ok...But somone felt..even that single answer is complicated!!
13:46
@fossfreedom That bad huh? I remember the photo, I'd seen him on another site and he seemed reasonable enough. Just a few normal questions and perfectly good behavior. I guess he must have acted out here.
chat is flooded with people!!!! but how many of you are really there?
probably grown-up now - seem to remember that was a year or two ago. Think there was some rumpus on meta or some other question of his.
@Danatela Why don't you just use the settings on the monitor itself?
@PatilAditya I'm here :D
@fossfreedom Yeah, he's a kid. Not his fault. Not ours either though of course :)
13:48
@Danatela I really want to help you who have helped me a lot!! But I clearly dunno what is framebuffer or X screen! So sorry ! :-(
@terdon it is the same resolution so I just can move the screen but it returns to the same position when I press auto adjust
@PatilAditya be happy Takkat aint here. then it would be crowded :=)
@Venki thanks
@Rinzwind ;p
@Danatela I tend to fix the screen settings from the screen itself so that it works outside X and if X needs different settings, I deal with it from the GUI. Setting it up for the tty is just simpler using the screen hardware tools.
13:50
@Rinzwind why should I be off? I'm only just workin too much recently...
@PatilAditya And now I'm not :)
@Danatela for details on how to set this via the shell or wherever else it works (I'm guessing it is probably related to $COLUMNS but I'm not sure where that is set before a user logs in) I recommend you ask a mod to migrate that Q to U&L. There are more CLI experts there.
@PatilAditya see! now it became messy here
@terdon... If you have the time... Please write what do you think about it in answer or comment. I need any clue
now I'm going to watch Captain America
bye!
@Danatela I just did, that's the sum total of my wisdom! :P 1) Look at the screen controls, 2) look into where $COLUMNS is set. Seriously, flag for migration to U&L that kind of question is our bread and butter there. There are 2 users I can think of who can probably answer
Mind you @Gilles is one and he's active here too.
13:57
@terdon Sorry for disturbing. your thoughts on meta.askubuntu.com/questions/8893/… ?
@terdon mods can ban now just for a year
no more
out of votes
is ripe for cleanup folks!
@Venki Please stop that! You've mentioned that question 3 times in the past hour!

I think this should be merged askubuntu.com/q/445910/169736

@Venki Yes, I saw when you posted it (and have upvoted) and I also saw when you mentioned it again 10 minutes ago. Hint, hint. :)
I've upvoted your question, I don't have any thought on it apart from that. It's not a subject I feel particularly strongly on one way or another.
13:59
ok ok .... So probably I should get out of chat, come again tomorow and see !!
@Venki No! Don't get out of chat!
