did @Marco cancel the DVCS session in the classroom, or did I just miss it?
That was on the 11th :P
couldnt have been, that was developer week
and i thought it was moved after we made @Marco aware of that
Please don't schedule sessions from the 11th to the 15th of July - it's Ubuntu Developer Week

Scheduled Sessions

DVCS, why you should be doing it.

An introduction to the ideology of DVCS, various workflows, comparison of: Git, Mercurial, and Bazaar - and how to get started with each. Time permitting this will also cover connecting to LaunchPad, Github, and Google Code

Monday, 11th of July, 18:00 UTC - Marco Ceppi - register for this event
>:-D
i need instant holidays... three weeks compressed in an hour or so
@Rinzwind that's outdated
14:03
the way Bill and Ted did it? @htorque >:D
i don't know who that is :)
> seemingly dumb
i'm definitely not seemingly, so no - not like bill and ted :P
back to work <[B-)
lies you have no work
DVCS= Distributed Version Control Systems?
14:10
Yes James
Thanks @Rinzwind.
np James :-)
goes back to Ruby and this developers life]

hey, its @Marco :P
14:14
@TheEvilPhoenix It was canceled for a sched conflict
I haven't found a time to resched

Q: Set up Grub2 to boot Freebsd using either Ubuntu tools or LiveUSB to find what partitions?

AzendaleI currently have Windows7 and Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty) installed on my computer. I also made a FreeBSD liveUSB and installed it without installing a bootloader (because I didn't want to mess up Grub2, and I thought Grub2 should be able to boot most anything). FreeBSD has it's own partition and inside...

14:20
oh well, maybe i'll give it a try then :P
@RolandTaylor new gravatar?
Yes, my real face again.
build-deps for unity and nux seem to be out of date
14:34
that google-mock thing should already be in the latest unity build, but apt-get build-dep doesn't get it
@RolandTaylor looks crupted and overly black
@TheEvilPhoenix you hatin on my face?
@htorque hah, I bet you need nux trunk too
but that's just a guess
i always build those together
make[2]: *** [plugins/unityshell/CMakeFiles/unityshell.dir/src/SwitcherView.cpp.o] Error 1
make[1]: *** [plugins/unityshell/CMakeFiles/unityshell.dir/all] Error 2
make: *** [all] Error 2
it complains about nux though
hm
Hello everyone!
14:42
Hi. Achu!!!!
=_= I wasn't sneezing before...
LOL
-.- forgot to make install nux
@JorgeCastro urgs, i love those scaled up 48x48 images :P
other than that it looks nice
I am more happy that it's landed so early
instead of say, feature freeze
14:47
just a bit slow to fade in
yeah, those things coming in late, tend to turn out half-a**ed cough overlay-scrollbars cough
someone asked a question about AOE3
@MarcoCeppi holla at me if you have time today, I have some stacktack questions!
I think that's a slightly unnecessary tag though - but I might be wrong.
@JorgeCastro I'm available for the next 30 mins
Past that I'll be out until 10
ok
hey
you had mentioned you had this working for AU
I have it working awesome, but for SO
under Global Options
he lists how to get it working
but I don't know where to put that $document object
14:52
@JorgeCastro Yeah, I had to add a few parameters to get it working for AU
I ended up hacking through a lot of the code to get it functional in WP
oh dude, I found it
nm, I'll mess with it
hi all! :D
@JorgeCastro Cool, good luck!
    $(document).stacktack({site:askubuntu.com, onlyShowAcceptedAnswer: true});
easy!
Yeah, I had a problem with the CSS not loading, so this is what mine looks like
14:54
@Alvar hola.
      $(document).ready(function() {
	$(document).stacktack( {site: 'askubuntu.com', onlyShowAcceptedAnswer: true, stylesheet: 'http://marcoceppi.com/wp-content/themes/classica-package/classica/css/stacktack.min.css' } );
      });
here we are again... "This video will start converting in approximately 00:30:23." that's my last upload to vimeo.
But otherwise, it's pretty straight forward
Ack, I've got to start checking who is asking these questions before I answer
@JorgeCastro if you got time, can you test something? open a gnome terminal, make it relatively small and place it on the left side of your screen. now double-click its title bar to maximize, unmaximize by double-clicking the free space in the top panel. repeat. does the window move to the right with every restore (using the default 'smart' window placing mode of compiz)?
@RolandTaylor :)
14:58
@RolandTaylor Don't put "Questions pertaining to..." in front of the tag excerpt - it's kind of obvious that it's about questions relating to that topic given the nature of the site.
@MarcoCeppi I figured it out lol
But thanks for the positive reinforcement.
:D Thanks for taking care of tags
@Alvar I missed that one?
@RolandTaylor what?! :O
it's like the elephant on the site
14:59
@MarcoCeppi Is the whitespace relevant? Mine's not doing the onlyShowAcceptedAnswer
no one else said hello :(
it's fun to edit tags for me
@Alvar oh
and I just copied and pasted your lines
@JorgeCastro No, whitespace is irrelevant
Where is it installed?
do I need 'true'? or is true fine
15:01
does anyone know how VoiceOver works on a ipod shuffle?
I am using it on tumblr
@JorgeCastro true is a valid boolean name in Javascript - is the site name enclosed in ' ' ?
it is
maybe it just looks wrong on the preview
should I use your CSS?
is it like orange and awesome?
@JorgeCastro No, it looks like this:
I just made it more narrow to fit my blog
it should be orange and awesome though
oh, it has a width thing btw
width: '900px'
built in
according to the doc anyway
15:05
yeah, a lot of that wasn't working
lol, tumblr is down now. :-/
You've crashed it! heh
I'm going to throw the AU logo on mine for now
but I'll progressively make it more awesome
on your CSS?
should I just use your CSS and it'll get awesome over time?
yeah
@JorgeCastro Yeah, if you want that's fine
@MarcoCeppi when you're happy with it we can host it on ubuntu.com somewhere
then I can just tell people to use it
15:15
Cool, sounds good
For now It's just got the AU logo in place of the stack tack logo. I've got to run but I'll see you all later
/me nods
thanks for your help!
^--- should we have tags like that?
we already have a bunch like those
But, should we?
i'm not sure we should have them, though
15:23
It's a bit cumbersome to maintain tags for every kind of laptop/desktop/mac - no matter how many active users we have :)
I don't think we should have tags like that. it's too localized.
maybe just vendor and series? [hp] [compaq]
Like for example, my laptop alone has several versions: mine is the dv7 1020us, but there is also a 1020tx, etc...
@htorque I like that.
@RolandTaylor check the 2buntu room.
Something like hp-pavillion, compaq gx etc.
@JamesGifford roger that
15:26
new unity alt-tab switcher: vimeo.com/26578611
it's ctrl-tab, though :>
shinnyyy....
It's more mac like than before.
Kinda like GNOME Shell, but better in visuals.
Now all it needs is some kind of fancy Synapse/Do style preview + regex :)...
How do I know what Ubuntu AMI to launch on EC2? http://bit.ly/ov9LPr #cloud
15:44
sup peeps
sup @RolandTaylor
The Spartan Penguin has arrived

Spills an icecold smoothie on @TheEvilPhoenix
@htorque cya
@zkriesse welcome to The Spartan Penguin, but this is Athens.
15:49
@zkriesse You're an Ubuntu Wiki mod... so that means you get an email every time I screw with a wiki page?
@RolandTaylor oh dangit!
@JamesGifford no...you only get wiki notifications if you're subscribed to the wiki page in question
@JamesGifford Why asketh thee? Editing pages left and right?
Or do I need to worry now :P
@zkriesse When I edit something, I get this thing at the top of the page saying these people were notified - and it's the same people every time. :P
As for why I asked, I was just curious.
@JamesGifford Ah well, those are either bot-ish subscriptions plus they're the uber wiki admins I believe...
@zkriesse OK. Thanks for answering my question.
@JamesGifford certainly
Yeah I'm definitely a wiki guru
15:55
cool stuff. :)
lol
Yeah I enjoy it
brb
@RolandTaylor \o
hello all
"Is there a way I can preview the changes?"
@RolandTaylor I dont think so
16:11
:/
Well I can't go ahead with changes if we can't see what will happen before they are applied.
ill upload the theme
then you can press the "preview" button :/
kk
that works
it's just a theme btw?
Not just themes
Addons

Q: How to organize a block of text in 8-character lines?

Daniel RodriguesI'm toying around with binary code and ciphers and I've a chunk of text which I would like to reorganise in 8-character lines (those familiar with the topic will understand why). See: 010000100110010100100000011100110111010101110010011001 010010000001110100011011110010000001100100011100100110 1...

i dont think that's relevant to Ubuntu
migrate worthy to SO or something?
No, it's on-topic here
How so?
it relates to shell scripting, and not necessarily Ubuntu
He's asking for a solution using tool sets typically found in Linux (and by proxy - Ubuntu)
Programming questions are on-topic so long as they related to Ubuntu in someway - this is probably better suited for U&L or SO - but it's an edge-case
and I typically side with the author in regards to edge cases
Because, lets say I migrate - and the author gets offended
Then he's going to email me or post on meta making a stink about it
18:28
in which case he can stuff it
then we say "well, it's kind of, sort of, iffy"
because users should be listening to the mods
and we just look weak by comparison
because it's ontopic here, and it's ontopic on U&L, and it's ontopic on SO
@MarcoCeppi also, as @oli mentioned to me awhile back, shell scripting can be very distro-specific.
if it's on-topic on more than two SE site I usually say let it ride
@JamesGifford This is also true
18:29
also, sometimes such questions add fun
@MarcoCeppi shuts up now
in the end it's also on-topic here
So let it stay
so it's all about giving a good user experience at this point - it'll get answered on all three, but migrating forces the user to move to another site
for new users this can be confusing
anyways - great question @TheEvilPhoenix Thanks for bringing it up
@TheEvilPhoenix it is definitely worth discussing!
18:31
lol
Watches as the post stays
Kicks some Persian but, saves King Leonidas
no upvotes yet... (?)
@Takkat meta discussion worthy?
@MarcoCeppi no problem, bringing up questions is helping me understand where or where not to flag
if we didn't have it before - maybe (but it feels like we had it before)
18:36
if you cant find a question that exists @Takkat i'll gladly write a new one
:P
@Marco where would I report an SE-wide bug with IE7 and site rendering?
Is there any way to "scrobble" to libre.fm using Banshee? http://bit.ly/pPPHUv #banshee
pours ice cold milk all over @TheEvilPhoenix
@TheEvilPhoenix You can do it on our meta - SE checks all the metas now
You can also do it on meta.so
Proceeds to rock out to Kurukuru Mark no Sugoi Yatsu
@TheEvilPhoenix didn't find a meta Q on that topic
18:41
sets ignore on @zkriesse
Lol
@TheEvilPhoenix you wouldn't do that...who else can you pour hot coffee on
hi
whats up?, whats down?
what's left?
oh and what's right!

Q: Discussion: Edge-Case Questions which can belong on Multiple Sites

The Evil PhoenixThis question counts as an edge-case question: How to organize a block of text in 8-character lines? Such an edge-case question can be considered extremely loosely on-topic for AskUbuntu. However, it is fully on-topic for StackOverflow or Unix&Linux. In such edge cases as these, what is th...

also can someone with tagwiki powers check the tag wiki? I think i tried to create the tag wiki for the minecraft tag
18:53
there is no wiki entry...
tag
can you create a tag about tags ?
[tag]
:P
@TheEvilPhoenix it was rejected
ok
and i take it there's no explanation as to why?
;)
There is, the tag excerpt just says "questions about minecraft"
it should breifly describe what minecraft is
Shouldn't that be in the actual wiki part, and not the excerpt?
18:56
the wiki itself needs not contain "questions about..." in it. Instead it should be like a mini wikipedia entry
otherwise the wiki part and the actual excerpt will be duplicated
it's assumed that this is a tag about questions about minecraft
the except need only be one or two sentances long
at most
@MarcoCeppi hey long time no see...
The entry should be a paragraph + depending on the content
such as "Minecraft is a Java-based game..." and more about the game in 2 sentences?
18:57
aka a mini wikipedia page
everything Phoenix is rejected by default...
i'll see if i can recreate it later when i'm not at work :P
@juancarlospaco Not true, he is one of the more prolific editors/flaggers :)
(BTW, there should be linked guidelines to what a tag wiki entry should look like ;) )
18:58
I agree
if You make a great minecraft wiki I'll create a meta article about it
and now that i've seen this
i'd like to file a complaint against @juancarlospaco
for being an outright ass everywhere
i have had him on ignore for about a week for being annoying
and somewhat insulting when talking about me
even if he isnt involved in the convo
2 mins ago, by juancarlospaco
everything Phoenix is rejected by default...
this counts as theoretical slander in the legal universe
