If displayport doesn't work out, I'm thinking about tinkering with the X11 configuration bits so you can use a raspi as a vnc client to an xvfb instance. Then you just have a rpi that extends your desktop over a LAN connection. Down with displayport, up for open hardware type of thing...
@hbdgaf bet you could even do compression and a orientation sensor
You could do all kinds of interesting things. I was thinking a while ago that a reworked VNC server that used h264 would compress/decompress in hardware wicked fast... a little more than one would want to undertake in an initial PoC though.
@Seth ah. :( the name it's not really the issue, but I'm gonna change it..the issue is that I'm nearly done with my project and don't want to end on the press or blog for my trolling past :( it was more anger and irrational thinking :(
and I've acknowledged that..
@Mateo This would be a good source for input if anyone has an answer instead of just running something in a separate X session and not supporting drag - askubuntu.com/questions/353384/…
my project is a help to the people, a devotion to their life..if one day my "trolling" past gets on my way I'm finished :(
I don't know if I can sleep tonight because of this..
22:09
You'll sleep. It's a bag of bricks. Just put it down.
yeah, get it sending first. can you manually send a program that is already open to another x display?
I've never had to try that. No idea.
If that works, you could hack together a screen edge program(like the one that maximizes/left/right windows auto) to send the window over on dragging to the edge
@hbdgaf sure? :O you know when people get fame (I don't want it, but it's inevitable with this project) there are always people trying to get to your past and slap that in the face of the public, if they found something "not-in-place"...I just went to another country for the same reason..
@Mateo en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xpra maybe... but i've never used it. There's xdmx too, but I've never really tried either... and Xdmx is old-ish
@slowbanned If that's what they want, do you really want their respect anyway? I don't.
@Mateo The initial program would probably have to be launched with xpra to allow that anyway... and you'ld be bringing a third box in to the mix. It's nowhere NEAR a normal configuration. I was looking for a way to join two desktops/sessions more directly, so I could do something like start another screen with xvfb and impose it on the current X session as another monitor. It has been a while though.
22:15
mmm no I don't either..I just hope my past doesn't get along with my present and future, that's all I want.
It will or it won't. Nothing to be done about it now.
@hbdgaf thank you anyway for your reassuring words. What do you suggest, do I continue with my project, do I stop it, or continue under another nick?
Do whatever. It will work out or it won't. Just do something.
it could be called "DisPıay" <i without dot to make it look like play and Pi ;)
@hbdgaf Ok, I will :)
guess I'll change identity then
22:20
@Mateo it's just something that has been rattling around my nugget since I got a pi. I can't be the only one who thought of it.
I was just reading the Xorg.conf man pages. This is hilarious x.org/archive/X11R6.8.0/doc/xorg.conf.5.html#sect8

lol, " Nobody wants to say how this works. Maybe nobody knows ... "
Yep... I was all - WOW!!! that's in a man-page
It's probably a deprecated config blob or something. That's my guess.

Q: Uninstalling *.run file

siskoI just installed a file called SenchaCmd-4.0.2.67-linux-x64.run by executing the following code: ./SenchaCmd-4.0.2.67-linux-x64.run Due to a problem I describe in detail here, I decided to uninstall SenchaCmd. However, it is not listed in Ubuntu Software Centre or Synaptic Package Manager. Ho...

@UbuntuQuestionsonU&L It installs in opt. Just purge the folder and delete your ~/.Sencha or whatever... geez.
There are certain things that are just impossible to find in any search engine

@Lucio who me? related to camcastic?
lol no

np. was just saying the other day, that i'm only committing on a column close on trello.
@Lucio you can be invited to that board if you're interested...
22:35
@hbdgaf hm, so what do you think the default keys should be
@hbdgaf I appreciate, but I'll very busy this month
@Mateo no idea... I'm going with Ctl+something combos.
@Lucio I more meant if you wanted to look under the hood at unannounced progress.
I know what is trello :)
maybe alt combos since ctl+1 puts you on the first chromium tab on my box
@hbdgaf ctrl+alt, seem mostly empty in most programs
22:39
unity uses all over the place doesn't it?
except ctrl+alt+s and l, t

Q: howto repair php installation

Stefan BollmannI try to test my php installation on a ubuntu server without gui. Therefore I follow the 3rd this howto for LAMP(!). This includes to install php5 et al. with sudo apt-get install php5 libapache2-mod-php5 php5-mcrypt Then PHP is added to the directory index. sudo nano /etc/apache2/mods-enable...

no reproducible
all the others are empty, now meta is basically called for in unity
kk i'll give it another look
@Lucio don't put raw html inside of <?php blobs. problem solved. seems like you're supposed to separate php script from raw html at least a little. it's not a broken install, it's broken code. ask somewhere else. ?sound reasonable?
@hbdgaf but with terminal open the c/z/x still works even holding down alt with it - maybe the YUIOP area? P - pause, I - information, O - options? brackets and punctuations for switching and stuff like that
22:45
I think it is spam or something bad
<?php
Echo '<h3 align="center">"Awesomeness has no charge" - Po the Panda</h3>'; phpinfo();
?>
(following my gut)
The supposedly "image link" has an invalid format
@hbdgaf Or just put the HTML ahead of the PHP.
And, echo, not Echo.
@hbdgaf are you talking to my or what¿
I despise php. Was going off of a quick google.
22:47
is the picture bad?
@Mateo no idea
@Lucio yes, i was talking at your question close link
I didn't click the link
@Lucio Very much reproducible. Because the error isn't with the system, it's literally just the code.
Plug the file into a working system, and you'll get the exact same error.
> This describes a problem that can't be reproduced that seemingly went away on its own or was only relevant to a very specific period of time. It's off-topic as it's unlikely to help future readers.
fits perfectly
22:50
sure.
@hbdgaf thanks
@Lucio was sarcasm. it's a code problem. it should be closed with an ask our friends on webapps or SO or something... not no repro
I said thanks for the edit, not your opinion :D
@Lucio inserted the image. probably just an advert for the image hosting company.
@Lucio oh... yeah that ;)
no matter who, that should be closed.

@Mateo - do you think letting F11 full-screen a cam embed is really an anticipated behavior?
@slowbanned If you're worried about coming back from trolling, arguing with the SE modus operandi wouldn't be the way to do it.
@hbdgaf maybe/maybe-not, it is common for various program windows, but if it causes other problems it might not be worth it - kind of like f1 is help - although this isn't a normal one window program.
that's true. i could see the f11 thing being useful for some corner cases. the next feature request if it were supported would be tweening though so it didn't snap, it grew gradually.
i'm going with taking the f11 shortcut out of shortcuts and putting it on wishlist as a feature request if that seems reasonable.
@slowbanned here's a question. has a 10k user ever been deleted for something not being gross misconduct?
@FEichinger - don't you think that PHP question should be closed or asked on a programming site instead of an environment site since that is where the problem is?
@hbdgaf are normal users not entitled to discuss these things? anyway I read that question another way..I thought he had lost his account credentials. My excuses :/
23:06
@hbdgaf ok, we can file that as something like "per cam window shortucts" - would depend on the graphics part, things like swapping cam positions, ect.
I'm too nervous to read things straight :/
@slowbanned It's just a question. Does that problem actually exist? I doubt it. That's just how I read it.
usb-devices binary is in Ubuntu right?
yes
nice
23:09
@Mateo Why would you want to swap cam positions? Anyway, it's something for after things work. Not for when you're getting something baseline working. We did super-baseline working already. Now it's adding in basic structure and fixing problems. Next it's cool stuff. I think that's probably how it can reach milestones instead of trying to put features in as you go.
@Braiam I might have installed something random that provides it. let me check apt-file to see what package it's in
@hbdgaf Well it could exist. For example your email account gets hacked and the password subsequently changed, or that can happen on a shared computer too.. how would you restore that? I think there is the need to have more restore options..take a look at Facebook for one..you can restore your account with your phone number too. Just a thought
@hbdgaf usbutils package
> Priority: optional
@slowbanned you can ask for an account merge to a new email in that case. moderators listen.
really? I tried that back when I had my first account here but never got a reply ;)
@hbdgaf think of a speaker with a crowd, or doing a tech demo, you might start out with the person, swap to the demonstration/croud, anyway that is a long way off
23:13
@slowbanned if you really have 10k rep somewhere on SE, i think some mod has had enough interaction with you already that they know some detail the person that cracked your email doesn't that they can ask about at the new acct. people ask for that and get it on meta ALL THE TIME. frequently
@slowbanned ask @kalina if you want a first hand experience...
@Mateo that would be a valid use case. yeah, i need to get the basic stuff working right fist.
@Braiam yes, i starred that.
oh god...
bye context
@hbdgaf ah ok, nice to know :) well then me crawls back to basement for embarassment...
@Braiam ;) I unstarred it before timeout, but it served the purpose.

Q: Sometimes don't have permission to create new folders on an ntfs partition in Evince

TimMy hard drive has an ntfs partition mounted under Ubuntu 12.04. I use evince as the default application to open pdf files downloaded under Firefox. I often save copies of pdf files opened in Evince to the ntfs partition, and before that, I would like to create new folders in the ntfs partition...

sounds like mounted by fuse versus mounted manually. just my guess...
is it against the rules to make another account, so that I can keep contributing showing the person I'm now?
multiple accounts are allowed if you do it in good faith. i had a second account at one point, but i named it obviously and didn't use it for much of anything.
I know it maybe sounds stupid..but I can't live with this past issue..just had too many issue in real life (and still have, as I live still in a garage..)
okay, this isn't the place to talk about that part of it...
23:22
oh, wonderful :(
sorry :/
wanted to give some context to it
i'm trying to do you a favor there... it's a really BAD place to talk about that part of it.
yes I'm not talking about it anymore ;)
if it really makes a difference in a real decision on SE's part they'll handle that part of the conversation in direct email. i know.
@hbdgaf through the contact link or special chat room?
direct email. they have yours. if it's decision time, they'll tell you.
23:25
thanks :)
say what?
deleted accounts?
@hbdgaf yes
merged accounts was the point in question i think... but if you had a deleted one that is more relevant.
@kalina oh then yes that.
I had my account deleted and subsequently restored
I had ~25k rep at the time
~40k network wide
maybe you want to drop a note to that in the question he was concerned about... it comes back to this: meta.askubuntu.com/questions/8238/…
@kalina but was it deleted because someone hacked it? Is the manual request to remove an account different?
23:34
I take this decision now, sorry, don't take it as personal or anything..I'm going to leave AskUbuntu for now. I don't feel I'm speaking with people having emotions :( I still thank you for the help you gave me, but still feel heavily pressed. You're gonna see me somewhere soon, I want to end this life of living in a garage and embarass myself to tell it to others.
My project will help many people like me and not. Government will be finally changed and many other things will. It was nice to stay with you. Thank you for everything :( cee ya soon!
dejavu... haven't we been through this before?
i'm out of this conversation.
@Mateo that's not directed at you...
@Mateo the process is the same

A: Is it possible to restore my deleted account

People are getting weirder and weirder in this chat -_-"
I'm not
I'm always this weird
23:41
I don't think my weird level is changing...
You're welcome to call me wrong though ;)
That's what SE and voting on things is all about
I like people that are weird. Meaning I wont stand out as much
@blade19899 I didn't say I wasn't weird. I said my weird level doesn't change much ;)
@hbdgaf I know :)
Just came from fixing a friends computer. Upgraded him from Windows XP to 7. Reason why he doesn't want Ubuntu: Because he is used to Windows, and Ubuntu doesn't look good.

Q: Why doesn't yum list anything?

JimIn a Kubuntu I installed yum. ~$ sudo apt-get install yum [sudo] password for jim: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree ...

On first sight fresh of Ubuntu, what do you guys think?
@UbuntuQuestionsonU&L stop trying to break your system...
@blade19899 i used linux in the old days. i can't provide any input there.
from my perspective, super still launches root menus. my windows install had the menu-bars and skins moved around anyway. so i was never an older person trying to learn a new ui. i resisted unity for a while, but i see the point. i just use xfce instead because i like it better.
@blade19899 I don't like Ubuntu either
23:49
@hbdgaf I just reset everything to default. Ubuntu doesn't really look... ehm...
@kalina I like Ubuntu. Just the looks can be improved.
@blade19899 I hate Unity
and my first experience with a recent Ubuntu was trying to get gparted to see my hard disk for an hour
you know what would be awesome? an installer iso that has screenshots of all the DEs so it could ask "which one of these feels good?" and you get the right installer for what feels right.
so...
I do prefer xfce
@kalina I just started using Ubuntu when unity came out. So i got used to unity
I just don't use the PC running Ubuntu enough
I used Gentoo and Ubuntu long before Unity was an actual thing
always with xfce
because kde is like kiddie mode and gnome is slow
23:51
@hbdgaf Good idea. No one started it. I think?
I know it's a good idea. That's why I said it.
@hbdgaf there is more to it than looks
so much more to it than that
@hbdgaf: Unlikely to happen, but would be an awesome idea :/
a screenshot would be pretty misleading
next thing you know, you reboot and you're stuck in xmonad.
FOREVER.
@kalina, gnome2, was stable and fast. gnome3, shit. never used xfce :/
23:52
xfce is super lightweight
@badp I understand. I more mean, what DE seems intuitive? Yep, here's an iso. Boot it live...try it out. Do you like it? Repeat step one until you're satisfied.
@badp: or useful for people like me who run different DEs and either needs to go with minimal or download CDs all the time. A liveDVD with swappable DEs and the ability to install the one you're booted into now would be awesome.
F**k* the default theme of Ubuntu makes it look like.... afwul, awful, awful stuff
lol
amusingly, most of my ubuntu systems are DE-less
@JourneymanGeek but a DE is actually about, yknow, the windowing manager, the buttons, the keystrokes, not just how everything is arranged together in the default configuration.
23:54
I got to be honest, on first sight, Ubuntu is a 3.
on first sight, all linuxes make me feel sick.
Unity has a purpose. I don't use it, but I understand and will support it in apps I slap together.
@badp: and the fact that some run better on some hardware than others. Makes more sense to me to run lxde on my brother's old overheating core 2 than unity or even KDE
If you think all linuces make you sick try installing bsd from source.
@kalina I have seen some pretty good looking ditros.
23:55
lol
I used to love CDE ;p
@hbdgaf why would I do that?
pity there's no proper packages for it on ubuntu ;)
@kalina the challenge?
When I last tried a bunch of DEs in a row:
- Cinnamon was plain annoying to use
- KDE support for multiple screens was abysmal
- None of them came out of the box with useful keybinds like "put the active window in my bottom/left/right/top half"
"the challenge" ?
nope, I don't think so
@kalina I dual boot BSD. It gives me perspective.
I would see it as less of a challenge and more of wasting my time
@blade19899 404
@blade19899 INF
And I design as if I want to run on BSD.
23:56
cant upload > Failed to upload image, please try again!
damnit
My Linux "challenge" was installing Gentoo from stage one on a borderline dead laptop at the age of like 12 or 13
I don't need to do that challenge again
download to HDD, upload to imgur, ???? proffit?
I always do that. getting annoying
302 -> webupd8.org
Dang..I'm having really bad graphics corruptions on my iBook after upgrading to Lubuntu 13.10. Gosh darnit
@blade19899 What's that? Looks kinda nice :D
You don't understand the power linux and bsd give you until you turn a wrench. Then you get it or you don't. It's a thing. If you get it, we have a club for you... if you don't you're closer to normal...
@RPiAwesomeness Linux Deepin

I suspect I do ;p
