@Mateo ^^
ah, reinventing stuff wouldn't be so good
that and beating something in to submission by going lower level also means the stuff you want isn't incorporated in to mainline because you're too jacked in for every-day users to find your stuff useful until it's a dependency.
simply said, calling pip from a subprocess is easier than signing up to maintain something that others choose not to support, but build in.
i need to go afk to stop ranting... i'll be back omorrow, but you see what i mean i hope.
sounds good to me :)
00:16
Anyone know of a script for which you pipe in another command, and each time it outputs, it beeps? Like, if you are doing a grep, it would be beep for each match.

Q: Strange POST requests to my Ubuntu server - am I in trouble?

Nathan OsmanI have an Ubuntu Server 12.04 installed on a VM. This server has apache2-mpm-prefork and libapache2-mod-php5 installed. I was looking through the logs and recently came across these rather suspicious entries: xx.xx.xx.xx - - [20/Jan/2014:09:00:04 +0000] "HEAD / HTTP/1.0" 200 274 ... xx.xx.xx.x...

00:53
@NathanOsman maybe you should ask on infosec ;)
> A command executed by the exploit contains several arguments that are intended to disable security mechanisms that might exist on the server, he said. These include the “allow_url_include=on” argument which allows the attacker to include arbitrary PHP code and the “safe_mode=off” argument. “As a final step Suhosin, a PHP hardening patch, is put into simulation mode. This mode is designed for application testing, and effectively turns off the extra protection.”
I see suhosin.simulation=on, safe_mode=off and allow_url_include=on

Update: we ultimately put this to a vote on each community.

You may have noticed that two similar Area 51 site proposals have reached commitment and launched betas:

You might well ask: aren’t these the very same thing? Why have two communities on the same topic? What, then, is the difference between unix and ubuntu? The answer to this question cuts to the very heart of what community is.

I sometimes wonder what Stack Exchange would look like in an alternate universe; one where we, as Evil Stack Overflow Inc., bypassed the community-process of Area 51 and came up with our own site ideas; a series of logical subjects, neatly organized into their own Q&A sites. …

different scope, mainly
@Braiam I know about that and even not interested in the sister site, just came here to know ubuntu. I am saying that, why only Ask ubantu have extra top bar.

A: Is Ask Ubuntu "official" Ubuntu?

flutefluteCanonical gave permission for Stack Overflow to use the Ubuntu trademark and logo for Ask Ubuntu. A Canonical employee also assisted in the site's new design to help meet the Ubuntu Brand Guidlines. Beyond that Canonical has made no public announcements relating to Ask Ubuntu. (So we must assume...

@Rinzwind you gotta be kidding me...

I said "could" :D
I have got sound problem. No sound icon is visibile.
Afer some regular update happened. Using Gnome FallBack Session.
But before this, I was using sound card perfectly, on this system.
Tried changing to different kernels, but problem remains same.
Should I post, outcome of few commands I tried?
@msinfo if an update caused the problem, and rebooting the system nor using another user helps, you should file a bug report...
I am not a advanced user. So, can't say, it was actually update, which caused the problem. But, I could say, after update, I noticed the problem.
And my diagnostic skills on Ubuntu are very moderate. I can't interpret every commands, outcome, properly, so, I thought, first I should consult with others, for same.
16:13
@msinfo that is why we exist! :+)
So, can you guess, what has happened to my system. Below are outcomes, of few commands:

user@user-desktop:~$ sudo service alsa-utils stop
alsa-utils: unrecognized service

user@user-desktop:~$ lspci | grep Audio
00:1e.2 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 04)

user@user-desktop:~$ sudo alsactl init
alsactl: init:1743: No soundcards found...

user@user-desktop:~$ cat /proc/asound/cards
cat: /proc/asound/cards: No such file or directory
I would start with re-installing alsa :P
From memory:
sudo apt-get remove alsa-utils
sudo apt-get remove alsamixer
sudo apt-get install alsa-utils
sudo apt-get install alsamixer
(wait for someone to confirm :-))
I tried this numerous time:

# install alsa base and pulse audio
sudo apt-get install alsa-base
sudo apt-get install pulseaudio

# remove alsa base and pluse audio drivers
sudo apt-get remove --purge alsa-base
sudo apt-get remove --purge pulseaudio

but not getting any error message, which would tell, where problem is.
But it might be better to start looking for the device 1st (no sound card found seems fishy to me)
ah so that's not it :X
Yes, I have sound card, and was using it for long time (almost 4-5 years).
But now it shows dummy output, instead of actual card.
Is there any command, which forces system, to detect, all hardware components, once again.

16:24
@Rinzwind night - safe journey home
Ok! I don't have, one right now with me?
But what should I test, with it?
What if sound, works with Live CD, and what if it doesn't.
If it doesnt work with a live CD - hardware issue or its a kernel issue.
If it does, this leads to a more interesting installation issue.
Ok! My bad. I forgot, to tell, I have dual boot system. Sound on Windows 7 is working fine, but not on Ubuntu 12.10.
What is interesting installation issue?
@msinfo interesting as in what combination of packages to need to install/remove on your current install. Since win 7 works this rules out a hardware issue.
I presume you've wandered through the community wiki? help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting
yeah! first one to earn the gold "reversal" badge :) meta.askubuntu.com/help/badges/55/reversal?userid=14356
16:37
@fossfreedom in meta ¬_¬
i think it's the first for our site.@foss you rocks....It was so difficult to get that on main site.
even more rarer given the fewer number of people who visit..
@fossfreedom :
Thanks, community wiki, gave some insight into this problem.
At 5 step, (find sound modules installed on system), I got list of sound modules, installed on my system.
At 6 step (find attached sound card), It find sound card
But still, don't know why, it wont play sound, from Step 1 to Step 4

How can I find name of my sound card driver. Below is out put of command:
# lspci -v | grep -A7 -i "audio"
00:1e.2 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 04)
whats the output of step 5? - logically you should be seeing the intel kernel driver in use.
also - sudo aplay -l ?
find /lib/modules/`uname -r` | grep snd
/lib/modules/3.5.0-45-generic/kernel/sound/core/snd.ko
/lib/modules/3.5.0-45-generic/kernel/sound/core/seq/snd-seq-midi.ko
/lib/modules/3.5.0-45-generic/kernel/sound/core/seq/snd-seq-midi-emul.ko

/lib/modules/3.5.0-45-generic/kernel/sound/core/seq/snd-seq-device.ko
# sudo aplay -l
aplay: device_list:252: no soundcards found...
16:50
did you install the restricted modules and reboot?
I did not do, manually, myself.
If that get installed, during, normal system update procedure, than can't say anything.
give it a try - doesnt harm your system to at least try.
Ok! Will try in some time.
it looks more like a kernel issue - so it is still worth downloading and burning 13.10 onto a USB stick and trying to boot from that.
anyway ... homeward bound for me. bbl
