Q: What's special about R and L in the C++ preprocessor?

user52875I ran the following code through the Visual Studio 2013 preprocessor. The output surprises me. Contents of hello.cpp: #define A(j) #j A(A?) A(B?) A(C?) A(D?) A(E?) A(F?) A(G?) A(H?) A(I?) A(J?) A(K?) A(L?) A(M?) A(N?) A(O?) A(P?) A(Q?) A(R?) A(S?) A(T?) A(U?) A(V?) A(W?) A(X?) A(Y?) A(Z?) Th...

Q: Preventing sink water from building up?

Amith KKI have this sink, which is sort of inclined to the back, causing water to build up on the back part. Here's a picture The sink can't be replaced easily as it is cast along with the kitchen counter. Is there any way I can get all the water to go into the drain?

Cue dirty sink :P

This is getting out surreal
actually, thats a pretty classic bug
updated for the 21st century. Nowhere near as surreal as say, wanting to keep track on everything on the internet

Q: How to develop a Windows program?

user235978So I just started using Ubuntu but need to develop an application, something small, that can run on my work computer which HAS to run Windows 7. I need to make a application for my work that has client/server capabilities, a single networked database and the ability for employees to change databa...

Q: How to properly setup web server directory permissions

depiI'm lost with this, hopefully I can find some help here: I have Ubuntu 12.04 LTS webserver. For example I have user "myuser". There is a public directory which is my web root. I chowned it and all files in it as www-data:www-data. This enabled me proper work of PHP which can create/write files ...

lol
@blade19899: there's something to be said for old ways.
09:01
why do people approve shit like this?
@Alvar, because, unicorns
idk
some code without code tags, the list of computer parts aren't a list...
maybe all the red and green colors confused them
don't approve shit people
btw. can we have rendered output without the red and green. Its distracting
09:03
Why did you approve this shit edit? @minerz029 @darent
Don't ping people who are not here
improve the post if you have a mayor problem with it
@Alvar Not shitty enough to shout at the reviewers.
@blade19899 doing that
@blade19899 You can. CSS.
User styles Firefox addon does that I guess..
or we'll need a user script to inject the css
ah. Am not always on askubuntu via my main pc. Was hoping it could get built in. Without installing extra stuff
09:12
Nope,but you can have a user script that you can install anywhere easily, and also uninstall after done.
Not the perfect solution,butworks
Naah. Don't always review suggested edits when am at work
lol
09:34
@Alvar Do you have a problem? The edit improved the post. Specs do not have to be in lists, I've seen them in quotes, code, plain paragraphs and unicode bullets. The edit addressed the title and even went to the trouble of giving links (I've almost never seen, except to the whole computer)
In addition, your edit missed a typo and mis-formatted the lspci | grep output.
@minerz029 Yes I have a problem with users posting bad edits. writing 16 G instead of 16 GB is kinda annoying..
@Alvar Is that it? The absence of one letter is not enough to reject it, the meaning was still clear.
@minerz029 the edit was still bad, no code highligh.....
actually almost all hardware information is useless
only the motherboard is useful to know...
@Alvar That's not necessarily bad, it was most likely an oversight of the editor. Anyways, I have no wish to further debate this.
whatever then
09:45
I wrote this, but I never actually tested it. Could anyone verify if this actually works?
@Alvar 16G is perfectly valid and understood.
@Mahesh he's correcting intelli but not 16G .. right
@blade19899 hihi my answer got more up votes
@Alvar And it didn't even help him in any way
@blade19899 it was helpful!

@Anybody... get the hint...
09:52
@blade19899 guess I shouldn't up vote then! ;)
importing messages and converting them sounds to me to acheive the same goal...

@blade19899 can't, just up voted..
Just hate it when people ask a question and then never return to accept an answer

@blade19899 gl hf
@karel I'm interested.
@falconer The motherboard in question is a Gigabyte Ultra Durable model. The 2X Copper PCB provides sufficient power trace paths between components to handle exceptional power loads associated with overclocking and to remove heat from the critical CPU power delivery area. The mobo does dissipate heat very efficiently, however it seems to be rather choosy about how it boots Linux without the Windows mobo drivers.
@karel: I have one of those from 7 years ago
great board ;p
10:10
@karel Nice. And do you have an SSD too?
@JourneymanGeek I had some hiccups getting Ubuntu installed, after that I have had no problems with it.
@falconer: my *buntu installs boot pretty darned fast even on spinning rust drives
not that I do it often, my main ubuntu box is headless and running all the time
sudo apt-add-repository 'deb http://repos.codelite.org/ubuntu/ **precise** universe' how did u implement lsb-release? in there. so that the precise/raring part is not needed?
@falconer I have an Intel SSD and it runs like a champ. I have installed preload and that gives me one-click application opening speed.
@JourneymanGeek I believe it is fast but I don't think it is as fast to cause a problem like here:
@falconer Please ping me from AU General chat room and I'll tell you more specific information. — karel 10 mins ago
oh fok
10:14
@blade19899 You should just be able to do this: sudo apt-add-repository "deb http://repos.codelite.org/ubuntu/ $(lsb_release -sc) universe"
this
Basically, just replace all version names with $(lsb_release -sc). Also ensure the string is in double quotes.
which is likely caused by this bug
as @karel 's answer suggests.
@karel Guess this problem mostly comes up with SSDs, that bugreport suggests this too.
@falconer More background. I bought a new graphics card with 2GB built-in memory and that mobo won't boot from it at all, so I switched graphics cards with another computer. I am waiting for Ubuntu 14.04 to see if the new GPU drivers will make any difference.
@minerz029, thank you. Am trying to shorten an old answer i had. But, could not remember the lsb code
10:18
@blade19899 welcome, it also helps make it future proof.
@minerz029, i know will post a link to the answer later.
@karel at all means even with windoz?
@falconer More background. The graphics card I am using now gets its power directly from the PCI-E slot. The graphics card that didn't work was getting its power from a separate power cable... and it was a bigger graphics card.
that might indicate a PSU issue
tried it with a known good one?
it should work, at least minimally
@falconer I don't have Windows on that computer. I try not to boot to Windows whenever possible.
@JourneymanGeek PSU would be a logical thing to troubleshoot, except that the PSU is certainly big enough, and also the issue hasn't appeared to degrade for a long time. In fact, the only effect it has on me is that I have to use gdm as my login display manager.
10:24
@JourneymanGeek I don't have such problem. And karel solved his by switching to gdm. I just wondered if the solution presented in karel's answer is viable: "you may be booting to your login screen so quickly that your Nvidia graphics card isn't able to keep up." And actually IT IS. I would never thought that a race condition can be a problem there, that lightdm is not waiting for the graphics driver to come up.
@falconer: I tend to blame my hardware first. ;p
@JourneymanGeek I can't because at my side I know that the drivers are buggy :)
My SATA controllers driver doesn't forward the TRIM command to the device. (LOL)
@falconer I have to say that the computer does run cool, even in the summer.
And my VGA driver (radeon) overheats the laptop if I play for more than 10 minutes a flash game.
10:27
And of course most of the laptop special keys are not working.
@falconer In Ubuntu 14.04 TRIM support will be enabled by default.
@karel Yeah, I will have to switch it off. Or my log will be spammed with a few thousand error messages. :)
But more likely I stick to 12.04. It is fine.
@falconer What manufacturer made the SSD? I keep seeing all these SSDs on sale at bargain prices.
@karel It's not the problem with the SSD. It is a problem with the motherboard's SATA controller's linux driver. It just doesn't forward the TRIM command and spams an error that it is an unkown command.
this is the problem:
> Mmm.. I wonder if something like this patch might also be applicable
> to the sata_sil.c driver too?

*Not AFAICT. The 3112 has a Command Protocol Table inside the chip.
Each command reads the ATA command protocol from that table. The table
is programmable (see section 10.3 of [1]), but not on a per-command
basis. The per-command PRD format is pretty much legacy IDE[2], and
nothing like the modern FIS-based controllers.*
I have that kind of SATA controller
It could be solved with a proper driver as per this answer there:
*I think it should be possible to send trim commands through the 311x,
but the protocol override is done differently, you'd have to send a VS
Set Command Protocol command in order to set the protocol code for
that command/feature combination to the correct DMA protcol code. It's
not quite as general a solution as with the 3124/3132 controllers (you
have to tell it specifically about each command it doesn't know
about). Also the set protocols get erased on COMINIT/COMRESET so you'd
have to redo the override post-reset.*
But no one is willing to do that dirty job for such an old hardware. :D (And I don't really care too, no TRIM but it's fine. Anyway it is only SATA1. HAHAHA)
@falconer Yeah, and new hardware is delicious.

thats the problem with that kind of question
that and they often get closed for being listy
Yes. I don't like BIG LISTS here too. But at least he specified that he needs the collapse feature, which greatly narrows the possible solutions.
But it is primarily opinion based too.
Its also a dupe, of another big list Q, that also got closed
This feels like silence before the storm. The spammers are just waiting to go at it again.... :(

@JourneymanGeek haha, thats another way of looking at it
@blade19899: At this point I have 1900+ flags on SU
mostly spam ;p
I can only flag 17 times. Why is that?
I'm not sure how it works now, but IIRC how much you can flag per day is a function of how many of your flags are correct, and how many you have in total
so you will get more flags eventually

@blade19899 Maybe but there are very mature younger users (@jrg was very young when he joined and was one of the youngest moderators on Stack Exchange), just as there are very silly adults (I'm nearing 30 and I still audibly laugh when somebody says "balls"). The only reason there's a hard limit at 13 is to comply with various child-protection policies.
The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 (COPPA) is a United States federal law, located at (). The act, effective April 21, 2000, applies to the online collection of personal information by persons or entities under U.S. jurisdiction from children under 13 years of age. It details what a website operator must include in a privacy policy, when and how to seek verifiable consent from a parent or guardian, and what responsibilities an operator has to protect children's privacy and safety online including restrictions on the marketing to those under 13. While children under 13...
