Q: Should "How to install Broadcom wireless drivers? (BCM43xx)" be cleaned up?

minerz029Seeing as this question seems to be the main one for all "Broadcom wireless" questions, I believe the question could be cleaned up a bit. The current question has remnants of what the original OP had tried, and other notes which may not be relevant to the vast majority of people who will read t...

Q: Installing openssh-server after Rescue Disk boot

TandoI tried to help a friend with hard drive boot problems. I first asked her to make a rescue disk (Ubuntu 12.04.3), and boot from it. Then I asked her to open a console (Alt+F1) and use sudo to become root. All OK. Then I told her to install openssh-server - so I can remotely login and look at th...

Q: New user not displaying using ls command

Fahad NaeemI am new to User Administration. I created new user by logging into Root account but when I use ls command to display the number of users it only shows my default user account. But when I log out, it displays the user created by me on the GUI interface. I am using Ubuntu 13.10.

A: Can I install Ubuntu inside Windows?

Thom Villa CariagaYes you can install Ubuntu 12.04 using WUBI, just download the WUBI.exe here Download Ubuntu Desktop | Ubuntu, then execute it, it will download the iso file. However if you already done downloading the iso file you can use it, just mount it using DAEMON TOOL, download it here DAEMON Tools Lite...

Improved format, and links. But, one of the link was to a torrent file(DAEMON TOOLS LIKE), but it is freely available. So, i changed it to the official download page of the application!.
What are the guidelines, when dealing with links to torrent file?(in this case)

@fossfreedom are you here?
@Windows8, do you have a problem with something Ubuntu related? maybe the rest of us can help?
@blade19899 i am just curious about zram
does it harm our pc if we overload it?
@Takkat Hello!
/me tabbed out to read some stuff.
@Windows8, no. it increases performance. See:
1
Q: Would zRam increase my computer's performance?

One ZeroThis article says you can have increased performance in Linux with zRam (virtual swap compressed in RAM). I have 4 GB of RAM , 2.93 GHz (Dual Core) & I use virtualization a lot (VMWare). Would it be helpful to my computer's performance to install zRam? I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 as my host and a VMW...

Not always. On low end machines zram actually makes your system slower.
13:04
@blade19899 I know it but some days back i was out of memory and my PC had kernel panic, i want to know if zram caused that or something else was there
@Mahesh what u mean by low end machine?
You need to have enough ram to be able to chunk off a bit to zram and still run applications without too much swapping
little ram + zram would be disastrous combination
zRAM is a module of the Linux kernel, previously called "compcache". zRAM increases performance by avoiding paging on disk and instead uses a compressed block device in RAM in which paging takes place until it is necessary to use the swap space on the hard disk drive. Since using RAM is an alternative way to provide swapping on RAM instead of hard disk driver which is usually unavailiable during system booting, zram allows Linux to make more use of RAM when swapping/paging is required, especially on older computers with less RAM installed. Even though the cost of RAM hardware is relativ...
@Mahesh i have 512 mb ram and 1 gb swap. should i use zram
???
512MB ram? totally nope.
Processor?
@Mahesh why? only 90 mb is used in it
@Mahesh Processor: Intel Pentium Dual 2.99ghz
I use lubuntu
13:08
Areyou usingany application that demands substantial amount of memory?
zram takes up a chunk of ram to store a lil more than what can fit in the same space on ram. A heavy app + not blazing fast processor can result in performance dip due to lots of compression-decompression steps.
Firefox
Hahahah, FF doesn't take much memory, wait, lemme check..
Mine used to be hungry, but that was long ago.
it takes about 297 mb
also, i use virtualbox
which uses 128mb
297+128+90=515mb i have 512mb only thats why i use zram
481 MB with 17 tabs opened. Am also on win7
@blade19899 i am not on win7 i am on lubuntu 8tabs open
13:12
The problem is, for zram to be effecient, you also need some breathing space.
So, At Last, I think i must not use zram
and wait
what, if my swappiness is 100%?
:13156128
@Mahesh what, if my swappiness is 100%?
swappiness 100 will cause aggressive swapping.
which means DAMAGE? my poor pc is 7 year old
You are running a slow processor and the effect may be visible.
13:15
Not exactly damage. it doesn't suit you.
@Mahesh from delhi??????? where in delhi?
dwarka?

How's life?
Any luck with that girl you've been eyeing an year ago? :P

I don't give a damn anymore.
First, do good in the boards

Hey, someone was working on SE Chat.
did it progress at all?
Yeah, I've read up on zram
@Mahesh VictoryChat?
I think so. Don't remember the name..
13:22
Nope, didn't see/talk to stefano in a long ime
He was awesome
I badly need a mobile app for SEchat.
Phani @mahesh
I think he got me into programming
@blade19899 they are enough to take on the close queue... the hats proved that...
wait what do you mean in a long time?
Stefano has a diamond, right?
@Windows8 Yup?
13:24
@Mahesh yeah

I found u on google+ , found everyone's profile except braiam
@Mahesh SE chat on mobile is almost useful
What about the other diamonds and their evil plans? :D
@JourneymanGeek totally right!
@JourneymanGeek in-browser kinda sucks. I need an app that can pull the transcripts when I'm offline for a while.
and seamlessly integrate into the main chat.
assuming the room is still as interesting as when I was last here..
those days, I used to use cron jobs to pull up AUGR transcripts. :P
13:29
@Mahesh: almost useful. If it could reply and @ people it would be awesome
as for pulling transcripts, wouldn't scraping the transcript pages be enough?
@Windows8, My Google plus page to?!
Yup. But if it does just that, the app kinda sucks. :P It needs to also support chat
@blade19899 no i cant find you,
link?
phew! i taught u found me
No! no link!
what if I make a QT app for SE chat?
@blade19899 *thought :P
Meh. Too much work in queue already. Would be disastrous.
13:32
@Mahesh, thanks! not a native English speaker
@blade19899 Me too!
Then I think the both of us could benefit from:
Hey, when was the last time AUGR bombed E&L?
Do you remember, @AmithKK?
xD
yeah I remember
I don't :/
13:36
@blade19899 Erm, you weren't far behind me in joining AU. if you lurked around in here during those days, you might have seen one.
It was totally fun.
blah blah
@Mahesh, back in those days, I didn't even know a chat existed :/
Ah, you might have missed some really fun stuff.
@blade19899 I like that the spammers only use your name ;)

it's fun to troll back... or argue with their logic...
@Alvar awesome!
@Alvar wasn't your account suspended

13:44

@Windows8 my account can not be suspended I'm too busy being awesome.
